The FesTival

The idea o organizing a Cantemus International Choral Festival irst ocurred iteen years ago, ater our ensembles had made riends with so many singers in other choirs inHungary and abroad during their worldwide concert tours over the past ew decades.We thought ’Why don’t we create an opportunity in Nyíregyháza or our existing and potential riends to meet together and an opportunity or other riends o choral music

to meet us all together?’

Since then the Cantemus Choral Institute and the Zoltán Kodály Primary School in Nyíregyháza have opened their doors seven times to provide the oppurtunity or singers o all ages and in dierent types o choirs. We are now preparing to welcomechildren’s, youth and adult choirs o equal or mixed voices to the 8th CantemusInternational Choral Festival wich will be held rom the 16th to the 21st o August 2010.

Proposed programme:

Welcome and opening concert in the honour o the participating choirs perormed by the world amous Cantemus choirs.

Folklore night - an opportunity or choirs to perorm traditional music or arrangements o traditional music rom their own countries. The estival welcomes traditional costumes and choreography.

Qualiying Competition – optional. The Festival’s Artistic Committee encouragesall choirs to enter this riendly competition with an opportunity to win

the Festival Grand Prix and several Special Prizes. Participating choirs will have the opportunity to give concerts in many o our

county’s most beautiul churches.

Gala Concert – the grand inale o the Festival including the joint singing o all participating choirs in ront o an anticipated audience o 1500 people.

The Festival is an enjoyable and upliting experience which reunites old riendsand where people new ones. The traditional Hungarian olk dance party ater the gala concert is always one o the most memorable events .

During the Festival the Artistic Director Dénes Szabó will also hold a conductingcourse. This will give an opportunity or choral conductors to practise their conducting with the Cantemus Children’s Choir and the Pro Musica Girls’ Choir.Fees or this special course are not included in the estival participation ee.See back page or more inormation!

Application orms can be downloaded rom our website,www.cantemus.hu . The inormation and other material requested by theartistic comittee to be submitted with the application can be e-mailed [email protected]

– Inormation about the choir in English (maximum o 500 words)

– 2 high resolution pictures o the choir and a picture o the conductor

– A recent recording (CD or DVD) o the choir o at least 10 minutes duration(this can be sent to us electronically in MP3 ormat)

– A proposed 12 mut cmtt mm and copies o the music i thechoir wants to enter the qualiying competition including a ree choice pieceby Kodály. Competition programmes can be amended until the 31st May 2010which is also the closing date or the submission o the music scores.

The Artistic Comittee will select choirs to participate based on the artistic quality represented by the submitted recordings. Choirs will be notied o the Artistic Comittee’s decision by post by 16th February 2010.

The Festival organisers may ask choirs to perorm in churches and other venuesin the vicinity o Nyíregyháza as part o the Festival. To prepare or this choirsmust have a 20 mut mm f cuc muc in their repertoire(this may include a capella and accompanied pieces).

Choirs also need a cheerul, lighter programme or entertainment (10-15 min.), part o which should represent their country’s olk tradition. These programmesare intended or the olklore night and the Gala Concert.

Choirs are not allowed to charge ees or any o their perormancesor the use o any recordings made o them during the Festival.



Choirs will need to make their own travel arrangements and pay or all thetravel costs to and rom the Festival.

Food and accomodation will be provided starting with dinner on 16th August 2010 and nishing with breakast on 21st August.

The participation ee includes ood and accomodation or the whole duration o the Festival and access to all o the Festival programmes.

QUaliFying CoMpeTiTion

Participation in the competition is optional.

Choirs entering the competition will be expected to perorm a 12 minute programme which must include a ree choice piece by Kodaly.

Competition perormances will be evaluated by the estival jury consisting o international members.

The international jury will award several special prizes and a Grand Prix or theartistically most convincing choir .

CondUCTing MasTerCoUrse

Dénes Szabó (1947) is an outstanding gure o Hungarianand international choral lie. He studied music in Miskolc and Budapest.

He ounded the Cantemus Children’s Choir in 1974 whichhas grown into an independent organization since with theinclusion o two other international standard choirs,the Pro Musica Girls’ Choir and the Cantemus Adult Mixed Choir. The Cantemus Choral Institute has been workingwith Dénes Szabó as the director since 2003.

Dénes Szabó is a highly sought ater lecturer at international choir estivals, mastercourses and conerences (USA, Slovenia, Japan, Germany, Taiwan,Spain and Hungary)and he has been a member o several judging panels at international choir competitions (Budapest, Debrecen, Nerpelt, Tokyo, Bremen Choir Olympics, Celje).

Several recordings have preserved the perormances o the two choirs he leads includingradio and TV recordings, 11 CDs and a DVD.

To acknowledge his artistic achievements in choral conducting and his devoted work in music education he received the Liszt Ferenc prize in 1985, the Bartók Béla-Pásztory Ditta prize in1993, the Kossuth prize and the Hungarian Cultural Heritage prize - both in 2004.

The conducting mastercourse – led by Hungarian and international award winning conductor Dénes Szabó - oers choirmasters an opportunity to gain an insight into the secrets o choral conducting. During the course o the week both graduate and practising choral conductors

will be able to gain useul experience and tips both on choral conducting technique and perormance. The course will culminate in the closing concert o the Cantemus Children’s Choir and the Pro Musica Girls’ Choir conducted by the participant conductors. Participants o theconducting mastercourse will also have the opportunity to attend all the events o the 8thCantemus International Choir Festival running at the same time. Access to the estival events isincluded in the participation ee.
