canteens meets.. delilah

Obviously you have quite a distinctive style, do you try to keep up with the trends or do you just create your own?

I can’t keep up with trends! Fashion changes so often, all it takes is one video or a picture online and something can become on trend just like that. I try and wear what makes me feel good. I love to play dress up every once in a while but generally my style is quite comfortable.

Does your style tend to change when you perform at gigs?

I most definitly take every opportunity to experiment with new things and I try and push myself to create something exciting for every show I do, but when performing on stage you have to be comfortable too so it’s finding the right balance.

How do you feel fashion and music interlink for you?

I’m heavily involved in everything I do. I work with a stylist but I’m not a clothes horse, we collaborate and ultimately I decide what I’m happy wearing. This goes for my music as well; every word comes from me so I guess both represent how I’m feeling at any given time.

If you could say something to your teenage self now what would it be? Don’t worry so much! Don’t give up. Enjoy it before it’s all over. Sadly I didn’t really enjoy my teenage years, in hindsight I was involved, and good at a lot of cool things. I wish I had embraced some of my opportunities more and made the most of them, because now I’m too busy to do a lot of the things I love to do.

When you think of your teenage years, is it clear to see how both you and your style have developed? I was the poster girl for badly behaved teens! I was stroppy, stubborn and rude. I had nice qualities too but sadly they were rarely seen! All my angst was great for my I was the poster girl for badly behaved teens! I was stroppy, stubborn and rude. writing though! So I guess that’s one positive thing (laughs). As for my style, well what can I say…? It was developing! At the time I thought I had great taste and so did my friends but looking back it wasn’t so wonderful. Think Sovereign rings, and velour track suits!

For our launch issue, CANTEEN meets with 22 year old superstar Delilah who’s been seducing the underground music scene for the past 5 years and is now coming up for air as she tours Europe and beyond. Following collaborations with Chase & Status and Maverick Sabre, Delilah is going it alone. The singer/songwriter to talks style mistakes and stardom.

Words - Beth Weld 74 77

“I was the poster girl for badly behaved teens! I was stroppy, stubborn and rude.”

Page 40: CANTEEN

canteens meets.. delilahWho are your current style icons? I don’t really have a style icon as such; I try to be completely unique. Having said that I think Dita Von Teese always looks impeccable and really embodies femininity and glamour. I also love how Gwen Stefani combines punk rock with high fashion looks so I guess if I were to have an icon they would make the cut!

What’s your favourite current fashion item?

I love shoes! Obviously winter is always a good time to invest in a pair of great boots! I also love leather this season; leather tee’s, trousers, skirts, everything!

What’s on your playlist right now?

I’m really loving Kendrick Lamar’s new album. Possibly one of my favourites this year! I advise everyone to have a listen.

Who would you name as upcoming talent?

I’m a big fan of up and coming Australian rapper Iggy Azealia. She combines high fashion and hip hop. She has a great look and is really representing for the girls!

How does having your own stylist help you when choosing outfits for events?

I couldn’t do it without her! Day to day I’m not one of those people whose stylists decide there weekly wardrobe but when it comes to a red carpet event my stylist (Cynthia Lawrence John) is incredible. I rarely fit into a dress straight off the rail so alterations are always needed and we try and make everything I wear that little bit different. Cynthia knows how to make something look effortlessly cool and I still feel great in it too so it’s a win win.

What are your current projects and plans for the future?

At the moment I’m working on a new album for 2013. It’s so much fun being back in the studio and I can’t wait for everyone to hear and see my new material.

Delilah’s new album is due for release in mid 2013, keep your ears open kids!

Hickleston’s Hovel

112

Hickleton’s hovel was a small, generally unnoticed retail shop in the middle of a vibrant, trendy street in London. The shop as drastically different to any other on the street as the owner, Miss Hickleton, a quite large and strong woman, refused to change her gar-ment list, the same order had been sent to the store for the past 20 years, every 3 months on the dot, the same clothes were sold, strictly only grey women’s work-wear, made of a very heavy wool blend. The other wom-en who worked there were all young, pleasant and fun but all had to dress in Hickleton’s strict work uniform, adopting a withdrawn persona, which was hard to over come even when the store had customers, which was very rare, as the public feared Hickleton’s infamous temper.

One morning when her employees turned up for work, Hickleton was enraged. An order had come to the shop, which was obviously wrong, it consisted of nothing the shop had ever seen before, amazing colour’s bright whites, daffodil yellows and opulent magentas, tai-lored cut outs more rambunctious than the store had ever seen, frills prints and embellishment, Hickleton was flabbergasted. Looking at the label she had no idea who Christopher Kane was but had assumed that must have received a Brown’s Fashion order instead their usual. Hickleton feared the incurrence of the postal cost to send the items back, Miss Hickleton was very thrifty you see and hated spending money. Some of the clothes had to be put out on the shop floor as there was not enough space in the small backroom and by midday this had attracted some attention from shoppers walking past, much to Hickleton’s dismay.

Unsure of what to do the she reluctantly, decided to try and sell some of the clothes in the order to make some money back, which Hickleton described as “grubby profit”.

In the coming weeks all of the clothes were sold, and the shop was a much happier place to be, and Hickleton made a handsome profit from it. The staff had seen a change in their usually belligerent boss and had even got away with wearing coloured accesories, and socks to work. After all the new clothes had been sold, one of the staff plucked up the courage to ask Hickleton whether or not the shop would go back to its strict ‘only grey’ policy to which Hickleton only replied “Lets just say I hope there is another wrong order coming in tomorrow”. That night at home Miss Hickleton ditched her usual lifeless and dull attire and tried on some clothes she had taken off the shop floor to ‘check’. This brought a smile to her face for the first time, in a long while since Otto had run away to join the Russian ballet. Over time The Hov-el continued to flourish under its much-improved ethos, also receiving a letter from The Communications Store saying that it had been named the newest stockiest for Christopher Kane, and would be receiving regular orders and eventually also took on other brands, bringing in innovative designs and colour to the store, and Hickleton had only one request, absolutely no grey, unless its Louise. The store flourished and was renamed Hickleton’s Haven.
