WHAT’S IN A STORY ?
www.thecanopy.org.au www.cameronparkcommunitycentre.org.au
A recent workshop facilitated by Anthony Scully from ABC Open highlighted
the value of telling our stories and sharing them online. Par cipants brought
in an object to gain skills around photographing an object, wri ng a short
story about it and then uploading it to ABC Open. The objects were varied:
from a significant family racing trophy rescued from the backyard to a brass
fire brigade helmet and a piece of po ery handmade in Bowral in the late
1800’s. To make this small vase, the creator had to travel from Orange to
Bowral to a end a po ery class. Quite a distance in those days !
Taking the me to discuss the stories behind these simple objects uncovered
a wealth of informa on to those par cipa ng. The ability to share these
stories online gives opportuni es for connec on with like minded others,
adds historical and cultural informa on for museums and local history
groups, and gives insight into past and present Australian lifestyles.

This issue we dedicate our community spirit in ac on to the
McCallum family who have been organising a golf day for charity
since 2000. Cameron Park resident Samantha Playford is the daugh‐
ter of founder Merv McCallum , a Lake Macquarie surgeon who was
inspired in 2000 to support The Children First Founda on (which
was started by Moira Kelly, the Australian guardian of the separated
conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna. )
The first golf day was such a success it has become an annual event
raising around $220,000 for the Founda on to date. The Children
First Founda on enables children from developing countries to have
life changing surgery in Australia and provides funding support for
Australian families with disabled or chronically ill children.
Samantha comments that the fundraising concept started when she
was s ll in primary school, so being a part of organising the golf day
has simply always been a part of family life. Nowadays with her
own young family including a new baby, she doesn’t have as much
me as usual to assist, but as always it’s a family affair so her brother
Andrew and her parents are busy collec ng prizes, taking bookings
and organising the ac vi es for the day. Samantha reflects back to
last year with pride: “In 2013, with the help of friends and
supporters we were able to raise around $20,000.00.”
The McCallum family are looking for either dona ons for raffles or auc ons or for people who are interested in being a
part of the golf day. It is a very enjoyable fun‐filled day with many prizes, enjoyable food and wine, plus the opportunity to
meet some of the wonderful children supported by the Founda on. The Golf Day will be held at Crown Plaza Hunter Valley
(Pokolbin) on Friday October 3. As Samantha says : “It is a great day‐ everyone takes a prize home. There are also
interes ng and fun ac vi es on some of the holes. You don't need to be a golfer to join in.” If anyone is interested they
can contact Andrew McCallum on 0428 034 884 or send an email to mccallumcharitygolfday@ people.net.au or visit the

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS—A CHANCE TO NETWORK
We were thrilled to see the start of a regular local small business network mee ng held
at our Centre every month. We decided to ask the founders Todd Sheldon and
Amy Becke a li le bit about what prompted the group, and about their background:
What prompted yourself and Amy to start a small business mee ng opportunity?
As a business owner myself and past Opera onal and Regional Manager for Security I have always found networking a
great way to increase business. I have always a ended Networking events and find them a great way to build
rela onships and increase business as well. Having seen areas flooded by networking groups, It was Amy who
suggested the Cameron Park area and the Cameron Park Community Centre as the host facility.
Do you both have businesses and if so, what are they?
I became a part of a Business Opportunity 2 years ago called Send Out Cards, an online Gree ng Card and Gi ing
business that offers people a unique way of crea ng Gree ng Cards online that actually come as physical gree ng cards
at a frac on of the price of gree ng cards we buy. I also have recently added another arm to my business which is
Le er Box distribu on to residen al areas in the Greater Maitland area, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Amy is the
owner/ operator of a Newcastle based event planning service Teacup Par es. Teacup Par es primarily specialises in
event styling, high teas, lolly buffets, dessert bars and stocks a range of premium herbal teas.
What is the future of this network Group?
We see this group expanding to a point where we need to relocate to the larger room, 80+ people and then adding
further events to the group. We would like to think that every business that stays with this group will find added
value, in new business rela onships and added business produc vity.
What made you choose Cameron Park as a suburb to start this event?
Finding a facility like Cameron Park Community Centre that is new and vibrant and has not been inundated with
expensive network groups and events ins gated the idea. Paying lots of money to a end networking groups o en
causes people to be over zealous in selling to recoup their outlay, causing the events to have the wrong atmosphere.
At the moment, these mee ngs are free ‐ are you looking to introduce charges in the future?
The only costs we are looking at charging is a minimal fee to add to our monthly event bags that are given out to
par cipants at each event. These costs are only in place to cover the costs of the event and some future adver sing.
The name of your concept refers to "small business" ‐ does it also apply to large business? Can someone who is just
thinking about star ng a business join in?
The idea of the events and the basis of the group is to have business support business, this means and does not stop at
just small business. Although I find that most types of business that generally a end these groups are small to medium
business. If people are in the process of se ng up a business, they are welcome to a end.

PANDA DROPBEARS GO ON A MYSTERY RALLY
Anna Dowley, our Venue Coordinator and her husband Jefferson finds an unusual way to support a great cause
How did you find out about this rally? The Mystery Box Rally has a sister rally which we’d heard about a few years ago
through the media. I originally looked at signing up to this one but I discovered the Mystery Box through their website
and the mystery about where we are going appealed to me.
How does it work? There are fi y teams accepted with each team having two people in it. Not everyone who applies is
accepted as a team and we have ended up being the only team accepted in the Hunter Region. Each team is required to
raise at least $3000 before the rally starts and funds raised benefit Cancer Council NSW. The name comes from the fact
that we don’t know where we will be going, only that we will both leave from and return to Brisbane, and we will only get
given the i nerary in pieces on each morning of the rally for that par cular day’s driving. We also don’t know what car we
will be driving as we will get allocated these on the night before it starts with teams being able to outbid each other if
they have raised more funds in the lead up.
What inspired you to enter it? Have you ever been involved in anything like this? We’ve never done something like the
Mystery Box before. It appealed to us as it’s a fun way to raise money for a great cause. Having both lost family members
to cancer over the last two years we are thrilled to have the opportunity to give our me to raise funds that will support
cancer pa ents and their families through a difficult me.
To enter the rally, you had to raise funds – how did you go about this and how much have you raised? As of today we
have raised $3658.84 but we are expec ng to be closer to $4000 by the me the rally commences. We have had fantas c
support from our friends and family and most of this has been raised through personal dona ons. In addi on to this I’ve
been selling Entertainment Books, we’ve been working towards securing business sponsorship and we also ran a Games
Night Fundraiser in July which raised around $1000.
The name of your team is unusual, how did you choose it ? When we filled out the form to sign up we had to put down a
team name and we only spent about five minutes brainstorming it. There isn’t any real reference, it just seemed like a
good idea at the me!
Now that the me is ge ng closer, how do you feel ? We’re ge ng more excited
as the date gets closer. We’ve talked to some of the other teams through social
media, including one team who was on the rally last year, and we’re really looking
forward to mee ng everyone. We’ve been trying to guess where we might end up
although we won’t find out if any of our theories are right un l we actually set off.
It’s one of the most exci ng things we’ve done in a long me!
When is the rally? The rally departs from Brisbane on Saturday 23rd August and
finishes up in Brisbane on August 27th.
We wish Anna and Jeff all the best on their mystery journey !
One of the more enjoyable things about being an MP is
welcoming local school children to Parliament House.
Recently I met Year 6 students from Edgeworth Public School on their visit to
Parliament House in Canberra. It was a great opportunity for me to tell them a
bit about myself and the values of the Labor Party which I represent. I was
impressed by their engagement, and they asked some very though ul ques ons.
I am honored to represent our area in the Federal Parliament. It is a privilege to
be working on behalf of local people and suppor ng the development of our community. If I can assist you with any
Federal Government ma ers please contact my office on 49542611 or email me on [email protected]
Till next me, Pat
