WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE VILLAGE IN JUNE June 11-14 Start of Summer Celebration - downtown Rockford June 12-13 Cannonsburg Community Garage Sale (details below) June 19-21 Father’s Day & the 1st Day of Summer Specials The VOLUME 22 ▪ ISSUE 6 JUNE 2015 COMING THIS SUMMER IN CANNONSBURG... The Village of Cannonsburg has a lot going on this summer! To begin with, the Cannonsburg Trail is being extended from Townsend Park to the corner of Joyce Rd. and Cannonsburg Rd. Construction has begun in May and hopefully will be done before the Fourth of July, weather permitting. The new parking lot for the trailhead and park on the site of the old McCarthy house (across from the Grist Mill) is being completed. In addition, the Grist Mill will become a Sunoco branded gas station in June. In a few weeks we will have all new pumps and a slight makeover. Last but definitely not least is that the Grist Mill will be serving ice cream and smoothies in the very near future! With all of this going on, we hope that you’ll be able to stop by and enjoy in the fun and excitement this summer. COMMUNITY RECGONITION FOR ‘OUR MAYOR’ OF CANNONSBURG On May 1, 2015 the Rockford Area Community Endowment (RACE) honored Judge Stephen Servaas, Lyle Squires and myself, Don Kurylowicz , for individuals who made significant positive contributions to the community. I was both humbled and hon- ored by this recognition. Humbled for being in the company of Judge Servaas, and Lyle Squires, two men who have made a lifetime in the Rockford area. Surprisingly honored for just doing my job and having so much fun for over 30+ years. This honor that I am very thankful for has to be shared with all the people who helped restore the Village of Cannonsburg. My father (Red) who was there in the early days to help, all the staff that have come and gone, and all the neighbors and friends that have helped support and encourage are all a part of this honor. To paraphrase the line I truly believe “It takes a village to build a village”. A special thanks Dick Davies for nominating me and a big thank you to the members of the RACE committee for granting this recognition to me. 5th Annual Honey Creek Inn Duathlon 5k Run 22k Bike 2.5k Run Family l Fun l Fitness Signup and get more info at honeycreekduathlon.com ….. COMING THIS SUMMER IN CANNONSBURG... The Village of Cannonsburg has a lot

going on this summer! To begin with, the

Cannonsburg Trail is being extended from

Townsend Park to the corner of Joyce Rd.

and Cannonsburg Rd. Construction has

begun in May and hopefully will be done

before the Fourth of July, weather permitting. The new parking lot for

the trailhead and park on the site of the old McCarthy house (across

from the Grist Mill) is being completed. In addition, the Grist Mill will

become a Sunoco branded gas station in June. In a few weeks we

will have all new pumps and a slight makeover. Last but definitely not

least is that the Grist Mill will be serving ice cream and smoothies in

the very near future! With all of this going on, we hope that you’ll be

able to stop by and enjoy in the fun and excitement this summer.

COMMUNITY RECGONITION FOR ‘OUR MAYOR’

OF CANNONSBURG On May 1, 2015 the Rockford

Area Community Endowment

(RACE) honored Judge Stephen

Servaas, Lyle Squires and myself,

Don Kurylowicz , for individuals

who made significant positive

contributions to the community.

I was both humbled and hon-

ored by this recognition. Humbled for being in the company of

Judge Servaas, and Lyle Squires, two men who have made a lifetime

in the Rockford area. Surprisingly honored for just doing my job and

having so much fun for over 30+ years. This honor that I am very

thankful for has to be shared with all the people who helped restore

the Village of Cannonsburg. My father (Red) who was there in the

early days to help, all the staff that have come and gone, and all the

neighbors and friends that have helped support and encourage are

all a part of this honor. To paraphrase the line I truly believe “It takes a

village to build a village”. A special thanks Dick Davies for nominating

me and a big thank you to the members of the RACE committee for

granting this recognition to me.

year all winter and spring. For some reason the

warmer weather has had me thinking about New

Orleans and, in particular, crawfish boils. There are

not many things better than sitting around a table

with friends and a big pile of crawfish with an ice

cold beer.

Oh, you haven’t tried that? Well, here’s your

chance! During Father’s Day weekend on both

Friday and Saturday nights well be having our very

own 1st Annual Crawfish Boil at the HCI. We will

take a very large pot and fill it with water, sea-

soned with Creole seasoning, Lemon, Onions, Gar-

lic, and Mushrooms. We’ll let this cook for a while

and then we add Red Potatoes, Sweet Corn on

the Cob, Andouille Sausage, and at the end, lots

and lots of those little delicious Crawfish. It will

come out to the table in one big pile and then you

dig in family style. If all goes well with the first an-

nual, the plan is to move it outside next year. As

you can see, I’m pretty excited about this. I hope

you’ll be able to stop by to taste some crawfish

and our other specials inspired by New Orleans for

the entire month of June.

Thank you and Happy Summer!

June Weekend Specials

June 5th & 6th

Crab and Shrimp Etouffee - A classic New

Orleans dish traditionally served at wed-

dings. It is a spicy mixture of fresh Crab and

Shrimp in a sauce of Shrimp Stock, Blonde

Roux, Plum Tomatoes, Green Peppers, and

Onions, and served over steamed rice.

June 12th & 13th

Meffuletta Sandwich - The original sandwich

of New Orleans, made famous by Central

Grocery in 1906. This sandwich is piled high

with ham, mortadella, salami, mozzarella,

provolone, and topped with olive salad.

Soft-Shell Crab Po Boy - Soft-Shell Crabs,

lightly dusted in cornmeal and Old Bay Sea-

soning, and flash fried. They are then piled
