Rising damp is the movement of moisture upward through permeable building materials by capillary action. It becomes a problem if the moisture penetrates vulnerable materials or finishes, particularly in the occupied parts of a building. Moisture can lead to timber decay such as Dry Rot. How to treat rising damp. It is to install a remedial damp proof course. What is a damp proof course? It is where chemicals are injected into the walls either via the masonry or the bed joint to form a barrier against rising damp. More popular than liquid systems are gels or creams. As the cream slowly diffuses, it releases a silane vapour which reacts with the silica in the masonry to form a water repellent resin. As there is no liquid involved the walls dry out more faster. Replastering Do you need to replaster when treating against rising damp? Simple answer yes. The need to replaster is due to salts being deposited when moisture has risen up the masonry. These salts are hygroscopic and will continue to absorb moisture from the atmosphere making the wall damp even if the rising damp is successfully treated. To areas where plasters have been renewed, standard lightweight plasters such as Carlite should not be used. Instead a salt retardant render must be applied to a height of 00mm above the highest level of salt contamination and to a minimum of 1.2 metre above the floor line. This specification can be supplemented optionally with a thermal render coat - to reduce heat loss and control condensation on the inner surface of the wall - and a silane external water repellent to complete the protection.

Advanced Plastering Our desire is to turn the building back into a home as quickly as possible,

by using our plaster system to the plastered areas you can redecorate

within 2 weeks. Traditionally you have to wait between 3 and 6 months

to redecorate so prolonging the disruption.
