Cannes Lions 2012 Analysis Ogilvy & Mather made history on Saturday night, winning the coveted Cannes Lions 2012 Network of the Year Award, the most prestigious accolade in the advertising industry. We had the finest Cannes performance in our history this year, surpassing even our own aggressive goals. In addition to Network of the Year honors, we won a record 83 Lions, and we won them by blowing away our previous record of 61. We also won our first Grand Prix since 2007, and we won it on the biggest of big brands. This is Pervasive Creativity in action, and it serves as an unmistakable indication that our creative resurgence has taken root in every corner of the network. Results like this require stand-out creatives and outstanding creative leadership. It also entails creative thinking from everyone, everywhere. And so, with this note, I offer my thanks and praise to our creative teams, our business partners and our clients, and also every one of the 18,000 of us around the Ogilvy & Mather network. Cannes Lions 2012 Analysis

Ogilvy & Mather made history on Saturday night, winning the coveted Cannes Lions 2012 Network of the Year Award, the most prestigious accolade in the advertising industry.

We had the finest Cannes performance in our history this year, surpassing even our own aggressive goals. In addition to Network of the Year honors, we won a record 83 Lions, and we won them by blowing away our previous record of 61. We also won our first Grand Prix since 2007, and we won it on the biggest of big brands.

This is Pervasive Creativity in action, and it serves as an unmistakable indication that our creative resurgence has taken root in every corner of the network. Results like this require stand-out creatives and outstanding creative leadership. It also entails creative thinking from everyone, everywhere. Let’s look more deeply at what we achieved.

We earned a pride of 83 Lions. That’s 22 more than last year’s record performance and represents a 36 percent increase. 36 percent!

That total includes 12 Gold Lions – the same as last year, but an impressive total nonetheless.

We democratized our gains in a very big way. This year’s 20 Silver Lions is 3 more than last year’s total, and our total of 50 Bronze Lions is 56 percent higher than last year. We had 182 Finalists! – 34 percent more than before.

As a result of this, our points total jumped by 31 percent to 526.

Our victory may have been broad in scope, but there was one office that fairly well drowned itself in glory. In 1st place, São Paulo pulled in 95 pts, which is more than the next two offices combined. They bagged 16 Lions, 5 more than last year, and earned themselves the undisputed leading position in the rankings. Bravo!

Aside from São Paulo, our top 5 offices share a remarkable distinction: not a single one of them was in the top 10 last year. London jumped from 24th place to 2nd place with 7 Lions and 37 pts, compared to 1 Lion and 4 pts last year. Cape Town, 12th place last year, is in 3rd now. A year ago, it earned 11 pts and no Lions, but now it is boasting 36 pts and 7 Lions (1 Gold). Sydney, in 4th place, notched 7 Lions (1 Gold) and 31 pts. They hadn’t scored a single point last year! Tunis, our 5th place office, earned 4 Lions, 3 of which were Gold. Last year they had one pt, and they had never won a Gold before. Tunis earned its haul of Lions in a year when the country had a revolution and on the back of a campaign, called The Return of Dictator Ben Ali, that was instrumental in bringing full participatory democracy to Tunisia. Advertising, as our Tunis office just proved, can change the world.

We are distributing the wins more broadly around the network. Last year, we had 37 offices contributing points. This year, that number has climbed to 40. The top 5 offices accounted for 49 percent of our total of Lions this year whereas last year’s top 5 (Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Frankfurt, Kuala Lumpur, Paris) made up more than one-half of our total haul. I look forward to the competition between these two sets of offices next year, as Buenos Aires, Frankfurt, Kuala Lumpur, and Paris look to regain their positions!

Guatemala won its first Gold Lion after winning its first ever, only last year.

Regionally, we had a photo finish with the folks from EAME just beating out the Latina teams by 1 Lion and 2 pts. AP and NA both did a lot better than last year, but EAME and Latina are setting the standard here.

NA scored a Gold in design with the IBM Think campaign. That’s 2 Golds in 2 years for a huge brand in its home market.

AP’s Shanghai office brought home Ogilvy & Mather’s first Grand Prix in 5 years!

As you can see, we had great success with our biggest brands. In addition to bagging the Grand Prix, Coke also earned 12 other Lions – 2 of them Gold. Sprite enjoyed 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze Lion worth of refreshment. Hellmann’s garnered 4 Lions (1 of them Gold), and IBM picked up 3 Bronze in addition to the Gold. We had wins from other big brands as well, and, as a group, the GBMs accounted for 31 Lions, some 37 percent of our total.

2012 is in the books. We’ve achieved something exceptional. But there’s no pole position we’ll enjoy for next year. We start off at the bottom, just like everyone else. We do have two big advantages, however. First off, you. You have a taste now of ultimate victory, and that, coupled with your towering talent and the creative energy that pervades this network makes me excited and confident for next year. We also have belief – the kind of belief that allows us to take tremendous creative risks and soar as a result. And now we have a new sort of belief. We believe we can win because we already have. Our ability to flood every category with Finalists – something that we have been focusing on for two years now – has paid off. We have still more untapped potential. When we are all sharing and working together, Ogilvy & Mather will be the best in the world, without equal. Our goal for 2013 will be to keep up with our blistering pace of creative growth and pervade creativity throughout our network. Another Grand Prix or 2 wouldn’t hurt either.
