America’s Deep South gets an injection of the sensual sounds it’s famous for: jazz, blues, and everything in between. In April and May each year, New Orleans and Louisiana come alive with contemporary and traditional jazz as well as R&B, gospel music, Afro-Caribbean, folk, Latin, rock, rap and country music. The festival has been celebrated annually since 1970, and an added drawcard is the range of African marketplaces and contemporary craft stalls that line the streets.

Why it Works Quality music | There’s an eclectic mix of local and international acts. Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald and Patti LaBelle have all been headliners.Fresh, local eats | The official festival policy is “no carnival food”. The unique delicacies on offer include crawfish beignets, alligator sausage po’ boys (sandwiches) and soft-shell crab. All vendors are locally owned small businesses and must go through strict screening for quality and food-handling practices.Giving back | All proceeds from the festival go towards year-round community development programs in the areas of education, economic development and culture.

NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL

The stunning Thai island of Koh Phangan is the setting for monthly Full Moon Party festivities. The sight of the golden moon rising over the crescent-shaped beach, combined with the event’s reputation, has garnered it international acclaim, drawing an increasing number of party people each year. DJs pump out an eclectic mix of trance, techno, drum and bass, commercial dance and even reggae. Vendors line the beach and offer local fare to keep energy levels up, ensuring the party goes on well into the morning.

Why it Works Lunar allure | The full moon has always been a source of curiosity and fascination. Tourist legend says the views of the moon rising in Koh Phangan are the best in the world.Constant tunes | The main site of Haad Rin beach boasts over 12 major sound systems, so party-goers are guaranteed music all along the bay.All-night entertainment | Fireworks, fire-eaters and jugglers maintain the high-octane atmosphere during and between each DJ set.

First held the day after Jimi Hendrix died in 1970, this festival attracted 1500 music lovers, paying the modest entry fee of one pound. Now the English event has become one of the largest music and performing-arts festivals in the world, while still retaining its organic roots. Those willing to brave the typically wet weather arrive armed with a tent and the requisite wellington boots to enjoy the frivolities spanning music, mime, theatre, night-time cinema, poetry, fine arts and even burlesque shows.

Why it Works A festival with heart | An enormous portion of the proceeds are donated to charities such as Greenpeace, Oxfam and Water Aid.Brain food, too | A ‘green’ area showcases eco-conscious technology and medicines, and provides a forum for environmental and religious debate. Added extras | Market stalls sell unique wares such as clothing, jewellery and delicious food, while afterwards recordings of the event are on sale for post-Glastonbury reminiscing.

Colour is the resounding theme for this springtime festival celebrated mainly in India, Pakistan and Nepal. Held in February or March, it’s not only perfectly acceptable to throw coloured powder and water at complete strangers, it’s encouraged. The aim is to get as messy as possible, all in the name of celebrating renewal and the triumph of good over evil.

Why it Works All for one and one for all | Its origins are based in Hinduism, but now the entire country gets involved. Race, religion and caste are irrelevant when it comes to celebrating the springtime festival.Celebrating diversity | Each region puts its special touches on the day. Mathura in India’s west has mock battles between the sexes, while Phalen has a full-moon bonfire.

The carnival capital of the world certainly knows how to throw a party. In February, Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) bids farewell to the pleasures and excess of life before the restrictive period of Lent begins. Over four days, Rio de Janerio in Brazil hosts music, dancing and formal balls. A stand-out event is the famous Samba Parade, during which elite samba schools battle it out in body paint and feathers (and often very little else) in order to take out the winning title.

Why it Works Living large | The personalities are as flamboyant as the costumes being worn. Everything about this carnival oozes excess.ViP glamour | The Magic Ball is the event to see and be seen at. Strictly black tie and boasting an open bar, it’s the highlight of the carnival calendar.

If your first thought of Los Angeles isn’t celebrities or Hollywood, it’s probably sex. (Not that they are mutually exclusive. In fact, many would argue they’re synonymous.) So what better exemplifies this than Hugh Hefner’s Playboy empire? Promoting the creed ‘What happens at the Playboy Mansion stays at the Playboy Mansion’ is Hef’s lavish annual Midsummer Night’s Dream party, held since the 70s.

Why it Works The costumes | Or rather, the lack of. Jelly shots (a highlight in their own right) are passed out among the thousand-strong throng of guests by women wearing nothing but bodypaint. Sexist? Well, it is the Playboy Mansion. But fascinating? My, yes.sex and the celebs | Despite the fact many stars shy away from public debauchery, this flesh-fest is perfectly acceptable for A-listers to be seen at. Bachelor Leonardo DiCaprio is an avid fan.

In the aristocratic country of Monaco, the pinnacle of race-car driving comes to a head every May when the Monaco Grand Prix hits town. Renowned as a sun-drenched playground for the rich and famous, the city of Monte Carlo is the perfect backdrop to the prestigious event. The city shuts down while the last surviving Formula One street course passes through, and a who’s who of global glitterati descend to watch: celebrity fans who have dropped by to catch previous races include Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

Why it Works Location, location, location | Monte Carlo’s beautiful and glamourous aura almost outshines any event held there. The stunning Mediterranean backdrop doesn’t hurt, either. something for everyone | The fun isn’t limited to those who are fans of the checkered flags. With sun, celebrities and a large dose of intrigue – who doesn’t want to catch a glimpse of the elite who flock to Monaco for the no-income-tax policy? – the event captures attention worldwide.

Monaco provides the glorious backdrop to one of motor

A far cry from the outrageous festivities in Rio de Janeiro, Vienna marks the lead up to Lent with the opulent Vienna Philharmonic Ball. Since its inception in 1924, each year (except for during the Second World War and Gulf War) esteemed concert auditorium the Musikverein is transformed into a spectacular ballroom. The evening unfolds with the entrances of dignitaries before a performance from the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

Why it WorksUpheld traditions | Ladies arrive in floor-length gowns and gentlemen don tails, tuxedos or uniform, which maintains the strong sense of class and elegance that is synonymous with the event. Young debutants dance the Viennese Waltz as they are presented to society, and each lady in attendance is also welcomed with a special gift by members of the Philharmonic.

Nothing encapsulates the beauty of Japan like the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. Weather permitting, each March and April sees cherry trees erupt into bursts of fuchsia and pale pink blooms, marking the start of spring. The festival is typically celebrated with music, dancing and tea ceremonies. Locals view it as a chance to socialise with friends and family while enjoying picnics underneath canopies of blossoms.

Why it WorksNatural beauty | The chance to marvel at the beautiful cherry blossoms in their native place is a major tourist drawcard. Cultural immersion | Visitors can partake in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and other traditional delights. Dream view | A plethora of photo opportunities is available for the amateur and seasoned photographer alike.

You know you’ve made it in the style stakes when you’re invited to Anna Wintour’s fashion event of the season at New York City’s renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each year, the Met plays host to the annual Costume Institute Gala Ball, a high-profile charity event for the who’s who of the fashion world. The Vogue Editor in Chief presides over the night of sartorial style, organising every last detail with her usual penchant for perfection.

Why it WorksMedia allure | Sky-high ticket prices (up to $5000 each) are justified due to how much media attention the event garners – the amount of free press means those who hold the coveted tickets are happy to relax the purse strings.red-hot red carpet | The biggest night of the fashion calendar comes with big expectations. The beautiful creations never disappoint. The who’s who | The attendees are the fully fledged fashion elite, including Karl Lagerfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker, supermodels Gisele Bundchen and Naomi Campbell, It-girl Blake Lively and fashion designer to the stars Stella McCartney.

Held annually since 1994, the Vanity Fair Oscars Party in the City of Angels is the place to be spotted after the Academy Awards. The star-studded guest list is compiled by Vanity Fair magazine Editor in Chief Graydon Carter and includes a mix of young up-and-comers (think Emma Stone), seasoned talent (Sandra Bullock) and the obligatory beautiful people (Jessica Alba). Television stars also get a look-in: more recently, Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and Lea Michele (Glee) scored an invite.

Why it Worksroyal affair | The high-profile celebrities who attend are the closest thing to royalty as Hollywood gets. The best in the business are in attendance, including Tom Hanks, Colin Firth, Quentin Tarantino and Tim Burton.off-duty behaviour | Attendance requires a careful balancing act between sobriety and intemperance (not aided by free-flowing champagne), because the paparazzi are out in force. But it’s not a work function, so celebs are more inclined to cut loose – and there’s usually a train wreck or two.

At the Hotel de Crillon in Paris – one of the oldest luxury hotels in the world – the creme de la creme of high society attends Le Bal Des Debutantes. In November or December, around two dozen girls, carefully selected for their blue-blooded backgrounds or well-known connections, are invited to make their international debuts in society. It’s no surprise the night is intertwined with luxuriously expensive fashion. Each girl represents one of the major fashion houses, ranging from Jean Paul Gaultier to Christian LaCroix. Most recently, attendees included Anastasia Gorbachev (the granddaughter of former Russian president Mikhaïl Gorbachev); Gemima McMahon (the stepdaughter of legendary Brazilian footballer Pele); and Lauren Bush (the niece of former US president George W. Bush)

Why it WorksDying art? | Events such as Le Bal Des Debutantes, held annually since 1991, aim to reinvigorate the market for a new generation of haute couture clientele. It’s estimated there’s only several hundred to a few thousand haute couture (a term protected by French law) clients around the world – though that’s not bad, given that the price tag of most bespoke gowns starts at five figures.Around the world | The affectionately titled Crillon Ball is not just for the English aristocracy. High society has gone global, with debutants hand-picked from Brazil, Poland and Japan.

Known locally as Il Palio, this centuries-old horse race takes place twice a year on July 2 and August 16 in Siena, Italy. Dating back to the Middle Ages, it came about when the Grand Duke of Tuscany outlawed bullfighting, and so racing on buffalo, horses and donkeys became the norm. There are 17 Contrade (districts) of Siena, of which 10 are represented by jockeys game enough to ride in the race that stops the entire city for a day. It takes riders just 90 seconds to complete three laps of the Piazza del Campo – the city’s main square.

Why it Workshistory lesson | The sporting bash’s old-world charm is still evident now. The extravagant parade that precedes the race, the Corteo Storico, thrills spectators around the world with its traditional costumes and grandeur. The medieval setting aids the romantic yesteryear atmosphere.rough and tumble | The event is brutal. Riders are thrown from their saddles (and have been known to accidentally whip themselves) and horses collide with the barriers frequently.

As the temperature rises, so does the anticipation for the fundraising event that is permanently penned in the diaries of anyone who’s anyone. The exclusive summer soiree takes place at the Serpentine Gallery, one of London’s most iconic contemporary art venues.

Why it WorksGuest list | The star-studded event attracts celebrities, socialites and fashion moguls from the world over. Most recently the well-heeled line-up included Elle Macpherson, Alexa Chung, and Angela and Margherita Missoni. Feel-good factor | Generous attendees are keen to use their wallets (well, delicate purses) to show their support for the arts. Proceeds from the evening go to the Gallery’s contemporary art, architecture, design, education and public programmes.

The 16th century is alive and well… in Texas, that is. Each weekend from mid-October to late November, a fully functioning recreation of a medieval British village is transformed into different themes, embracing the music, dance, sports and activities of the era. Lederhosen rule during the Bavarian beer-swilling Oktoberfest; Jack-o’-lanterns line the lanes during All Hallows Eve celebrations; and the village is bursting with Yuletide charm during the Celtic Christmas weekend.

Why it WorksUnique experiences | People can hone their pumpkin carving skills, enter a toga contest during the Roman weekend, compete in a barbarian obstacle course, and practice the perfect yodel. Authentic feasts | To compliment the themed weekends, traditional fare is served at the corresponding eateries throughout the village. Visitors can enjoy hearty bratwurst or sample mulled wine.outstanding outfits | From the performers to the food servers, everyone involved is clad in traditional costumes, adding a dimension of realism to the festival.

Never did we think we’d see snow falling in Perth, but that’s just what local event planner and stylist Sophie Taylor, at Taylored to Suit, made happen for this 40th birthday bash. Completely transforming a warehouse into a winter wonderland, no detail was overlooked. A snow machine on the rooftop was used to create the magical illusion of falling snow as guests approached the entrance – and that was just the beginning. While the function took place in the middle of summer, air-conditioning systems brought the temperature inside the warehouse right down. Ice bars and sculptures, sparkling chandeliers, smoke machines and chill-out areas upstairs, featuring luxurious furs, light-up bars and furniture, completed the scene.

Why it WorksAttention to detail | Fabulous catering - from oysters and French champagne to Russian girls serving vodka shots - created a night of true opulence.Live entertainment | Russian go-go dancers and Cossack dancers provided guests with an insight into Russian-style entertainment.

As one of most important Chinese holidays, Chinese New Year is celebrated all around East and South-East Asia. Also known as the Spring Festival – literally, because it marks the transition of winter into spring – the celebrations are held early each year. Red envelopes containing money are doled out, symbolising luck and good fortune in Chinese tradition. Other religious customs and traditions are upheld, such as cleaning the house to sweep away ill fortune, wearing new clothes and coming together with family to share meals.

Why it WorksNew beginnings | As spring is traditionally the season of new life, so too is this festival. It’s a celebration of renewal and cleansing.Family ties | Friends are visited and extended families come to stay. The emphasis is spending time with loved ones.Animal attraction | Folklore is at the heart of the Chinese New Year. The festival is famed for its puppets and decorative dragons and lions, which are prominent characters in Chinese mythology.

CHINESE NEW YEAR

RuSSIAN ICE PARTY

While Mardi Gras festivals are held all over the world in varying guises, the original and the best was born in New Orleans in the United States over 150 years ago. It kicks off 47 days before Easter and is famed for its coloured beads (mostly adorning near-naked party-goers) – purple stands for justice, green for faith and gold for power. While the colourful celebrations may conjure up thoughts of flesh and frivolity, there’s more to this holiday than drunken debauchery (just).

Why it WorksUnique flair | The street parade is the highlight, with multi-tiered floats, brazen performers in glitzy costumes and trinkets thrown out to spectators. you only live once | The festival has a never-say-never, ‘anything goes’ attitude that lends an exhilarating sense of freedom.
