AUTISM FACTS

-70% of the children with ASD have GI Issues compared to 42% of the children with developmental disorder other than ASD

-Toxic overload (aluminum, mercury, copper)

-Vitamin D deficiency

-Systemic Inflammation

AUTISM

Known facts-70% of the children with ASD have GI Issues compared to 42% of the children with developmental disorder other than ASD

-Toxic overload (aluminum, mercury, copper)

-Vitamin D deficiency

-Systemic Inflammation

WHAT CAUSES THIS ?

GLYPHOSATE

• Enzyme inhibitor• Antifungal agent• Herbicide• Uncoupling agent

-National Center for Biotechnology Information

GLYPHOSATE

-Glycine [a potent neurotransmitter / non-essential amino acid]

-Formaldehyde [known neurotoxin affecting memory,learning,behavior]

-Phosphorous Acid [white phosphorous used in chemical warfare]

GLYPHOSATE STUDIES

•"Despite its relatively benign reputation, Roundup was among the most toxic herbicides and insecticides tested.”

- University of Caen, Institute of Biology, Paris, France

•"Case control studies in the USA, Canada and Sweden reported increased risk for NHL (Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) associated with exposure to glyphosate.

-International Agency for Research on Cancer, World Health Organization [WHO]

Page 16: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

GLYPHOSATE GI TRACT

•"Taken together, these data suggest that Roundup exposure may affect human reproduction and fetal development in case of contamination."

-University of Caen, Institute of Biology, Paris, France

•. Ingestion of >85 mL of the concentrated formulation is likely to cause significant toxicity in adults. Gastrointestinal corrosive effects. Renal and hepatic impairment are also frequent and usually reflect reduced organ perfusion.

-Bradberry SM et al; Toxicol Rev 23 (3): 159-67 (2004)

Page 17: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

GLYPHOSATE GI TRACT

•Effects at 30,000 ppm included central lobular hepatocyte hypertrophy in males, central lobular hepatocyte necrosis in males, chronic interstitial nephritis in males, and proximal tubule epithelial basophilia and hypertrophy in females.

-California Environmental Protection Agency/Department of Pesticide Regulation

•The results/ suggest that acute toxicity at lethal doses may occur as a result of the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation.

-WHO/International Programme on Chemical Safety; Environmental Health Criteria 159, Glyphosate, (1994).

Page 18: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

GLYPHOSATE GI TRACT

• "...in a long term combined study of toxicity and carcinogenicity in rats given glyphosate at normal doses, inflammation was observed in the stomach mucosa..."

-International Agency for Research on Cancer, World Health Organization

Page 19: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

GLYPHOSATE BRAIN

•Taken together, these results demonstrated that Roundup might lead to excessive extracellular glutamate levels and consequently to glutamate excitotoxicity and oxidative stress in rat hippocampus. -Cattani D et al; Toxicology 320: 34-45 (2014)

Page 20: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

GLYPHOSATE ENDOCRINE

•The study tested the effects of glyphosate and Roundup at lower nontoxic concentrations on aromatase, the enzyme responsible for estrogen synthesis. The glyphosate-based herbicide disrupts aromatase activity and mRNA levels...

-Richard S et al; Environ Health Perspect 113 (6): 716-20 (2005)]

Page 21: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

GLYPHOSATE GENOTOXICITY

•Glyphosate also caused DNA and chromosomal damage in human cells […] one study in community residents reported increases in blood markers of chromosomal damage (micronuclei) after glyphosate formulations were sprayed nearby.

-WHO; IARC Monographs Volume 112: evaluation of five organophosphate insecticides and herbicides (March 20, 2015)

Page 22: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

GLYPHOSATE MORE

• Roundup exposure may affect human reproduction and fetal development in case of contamination [1]

• Glyphosate is toxic to human placental JEG3 cells within 18 hr with concentrations lower than those found with agricultural use [2]

• Maternal exposure to glyphosate disturbed the masculinization process in the offsping and promoted behavioral changes and histological and endocrine problems in reproductive parameters [3]

• Roundup […] could contribute to Sertoli cell disruption in spermatogenesis that could have an impact on male fertility [4]

Page 23: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

EPA STATEMENT

• “Given increased public interest in glyphosate, EPA may recommend sampling for glyphosate in the future”.

– Environmental Protection Agency, 2015

GLYPHOSATE EFFECTS

• Oral glyphosate

• Destruction of gastrointestinal bacteria via Shikimate pathway disruption • Malabsorption of tyrosine, tryptophan, phenylalanine• Gastrointestinal inflammation and leaky gut• Systemic absorption of protein• Systemic inflammation • Liver P450 enzyme destruction Stephanie Seneff, Senior Research Scientist,MIT

"In the presence of glutamate alone, and in the presence of glutamate and cannabidiol (CBD) or THC, it was demonstrated that CBD and THC were similarly protective."

RELEVANCE

• Without proper short term memory, long term memory formation is impaired• It would make sense that repetitive CB1 stimulation

would cause the desired effect,e.g. with ABA therapy? Unfortunately, often limited to no effect in severe autism !

GLYPHOSATE VS BRAIN P450

Page 99: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

BRAIN CYTOCHROME P450 D6 [CYP2D6]

- Metabolizes many psychoactive compounds in the brain• implicated in neurodegeneration, psychosis,

schizophrenia, and personality traits- involved in the oxidation of 20-30% of the most

commonly prescribed drugs

Page 100: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

BRAIN CYTOCHROME P450D6

• Endocannabinoid anandamide is metabolized by CYP2D6, resulting in the formation of multiple mono- and deoxygenated products

•Oxidation of anandamide may result in the formation of novel signaling mediators

Page 101: Cannabis and Autism - Dr Christian Bogner, MD

BRAIN

• Increase in CYP2D6 in 13 different brain regions of alcoholics including the frontal cortex temporal cortex hippocampus substantia nigra

all of which are areas of high CB1 expression and where anandamide is known to be produced.
