PERMANENT MAXILLARY CANINE (13, 23) PERMANENT MANDIBULAR CANINE (33, 43)

DIAGRAM

ERUPTION 11-12 years old (after mandibular canines, maxillary

incisors, maxillary premolars)9-10 years old ( before maxillary canine and after incisors)

ROOT COMPLETION 13-15 years old 12-14 years oldSPECIFIC CROWN

FEATURES Crown is similar in length or shorter than

maxillary central incisor Wider LL than central incisor, but narrower

MD Crown outline is asymmetrical ( mesial part

has greater LL bulk) Cusp - more developed and larger than

mandibular canine - tip is shaper

Resembles maxillary canine Narrower LL and MD than max canine Cusp – single, had two cusp ridges (thinner LL) Lingual – smooth, less-developed cingulum , two

marginal ridges

Page 2: Canine

LABIAL VIEW

Mesial resembles part of incisor, distal

resembles part of premolar Distal outline shorter than mesial outline

Rounder than mandibular incisor, but not as rounded as max canine

Distal outline shorter than mesial outline

LINGUAL VIEW Lingual view – more prominent ( has prominent proximal marginal ridge)

Lingual ridge – vertical, central - from cingulum to cusp tip

Lingual fossae – two, shallow but visible (ML&DL)

Mesial & distal aspect present triangular outline

Resemble maxillary incisors but more robust especially in cingulum region

Crown is slightly shorter / as long as mandibular canine Relatively smooth

Faintly demarcated feature:-lingual & proximal ridge-two lingual fossa (DL & ML)

Page 3: Canine

INCISAL VIEW

Large LL width (making it extremely strong

tooth during mastication) Crown outline is asymmetrical (mesial part has

greater LL bulk) Distal part appears thinner Mesial half quite rounded, distal half

frequently concave (for in lingual side, it’s because distal fossa is deeper)

Slightly more symmetrical than max canine

MESIAL VIEW Cusp tip is toward labial Triangular shape, pointed cusp on crownDISTAL VIEW CEJ curvature is less CEJ curved less

DISTINGUSHING RIGHT FROM LEFT

Distal outline is shorter than mesial outline Has depression between distal contact area and

CEJ Mesial & distal contact are on two different

levels of the tooth Mesial cusp slope is shorter than distal cusp

slope when first erupted CEJ curves higher incisally on mesial surface

Distal outline is shorter than mesial outline Mesial & distal contact are on different levels Mesial cusp slope is shorter than distal cusp slope CEJ curve more towards the incisal on mesial

surface

ROOT FEATURES Single long root, longest in maxillary arch Blunt apex Pulp cavity – one pulp canal, a large pulp

chamber, one pulp horn

Single long rootLongest mandibular root, but shorter than maxillary

caninePulp cavity – one pulp canal, a large pulp chamber, one

pulp horn
