Divine Mercy Sunday
In my previous assignment at my home parish, St. Thomas More in Baton Rouge, I was the chaplain of a parochial K-8th grade school and a diocesan high school. As a parochial vicar, I had thebene t of all pastoral work without any administrative work. I welcomed students in the lines for carpool, visited classrooms, ate lunch in the cafeteria, and generally made myself present and available.
I not only shared with the school children in their joys throughout the year but in their sorrows as well. I remember meeting with one child and her mom after they lost a close family member. Very often when a young child is sad, he/she won’t say many words at all. What could I say to this child who was obviously very sad? Ministry to children often requires a special creativity, so I had to take a di erent approach.
I had a print of a painting in my o ce called “Jesus, Friend of Children” by Vlaho Bukovac. I appreciate this painting because it shows the chaos of the scene recounted in the Gospel where peopleare bringing children to Jesus. You can see the children with their mothers, the disciples shooing them away, and Jesus gesturing to the disciples, “Let the children come to me.”
I showed this painting to the child and asked her, “Which child are you?” In the painting, there are children who are timid, children who are scared and one child with arms outstretched to Jesus. Jesus is holding a toddler who perhaps is the most at peace of all the kids. I don’t remember how the child I was visiting reacted to this painting. I don’t think she said a word. Her mom told me later, however, that she felt better after our visit. I believe the Lord blessed her just like He did the little children in the Gospel scene.
I had this visit in mind as we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. One way to explain Divine Mercy is the intersection of God’s love and our su ering. A recent image of Divine Mercy comes from St. Faustina, the 21st century Apostle of Divine Mercy. Even though this image is recent, the Father still had given His mercy to the whole world before this revelation, most perfectly through His Son, Jesus. One symbol that predates the Divine Mercy image is the cross. The horizontal beam of the cross can represent our su ering, that quality of human existence that is common to all. The vertical beam of the cross can represent God’s love; it is this love that lifts us up from despair to the heights of heaven.
I pray that our celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday may help us receive God’s mercy. The Lord gives us His gifts so that we might share them with others. I pray that, having received this gift of mercy, we may be His mercy to the whole world. Happy Easter!
In the Peace of the Risen Christ,Fr. Matthew

5th Station Social Apostolate In January 2018, $7200 was raised to build a home for a family in need in Haiti thanks to donations made to 5th Station Social Apostolate. This is 5th Station Social Apostolate twelfth home, whose purpose is to provide home ownership to needy families in Haiti. I would like to introduce you to the Pierre family whose faith in God has been revived and love for mankind has rekindle by your generosity. They are the recipients of a modestly furnished home with sanitation, a cistern, and solar panel with light.
We are now collecting donations for the 2019 home. Not only are we collecting monetary donations but we are also collecting blessings, blessings for the people of Haiti, and blessings for ourselves. Luke 23:26 20:35 states that, “And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. Please take an envelope from the rear of the church that contains information on what this organization is about and where to make donations. Donations can also be made on the web at 5thStationSocialApostolate.comOne home at a time, one family at a time working together in one accord and putting our resources together a dollar at a time and a prayer at a time, we are building the Kingdom of GOD.
