Letter from the ChairThank you for your interest in the role of Chief Executive of Lepra.

You would be joining us at an exciting time in the fight against leprosy. The new WHO leprosy strategy is part of a concerted drive in the wider leprosy community collectively to make a significant change for people who have experienced or are at risk of leprosy. Added to the momentum of the Sustainable Development Goals there is an increasing focus on integrated approaches to diagnosis, treatment and cross cutting issues in the NTD sector, creating a real opportunity for Lepra to influence the global agenda.

Our vision is to be a leader in reducing the incidence and impact of leprosy and other neglected diseases. Driven by our focus on leprosy, our purpose is to enable children, women and men affected by neglected diseases to transform their lives and overcome poverty and prejudice.

For nearly 100 years we have been at the forefront of the fight against leprosy, working innovatively to find and share solutions. Currently there are approximately 4 million people living with the consequences of leprosy around the world, between 200 and 250 thousand new cases starting treatment each year and an estimated 3 million people as yet undiagnosed.

We have world-recognised expertise in early diagnosis, management of disabilities, inclusion of people affected by leprosy, and in delivery of evidence-based projects. With field projects in India, Bangladesh and Mozambique, we work at the community level through our own staff and in partnership with others. We are innovative in our people-centred approach; in championing new work in water, sanitation and hygiene and in disability; and in technology-based monitoring and evaluation of our work.

We are now seeking to appoint a new Chief Executive in succession to the present incumbent, who is moving on after a highly successful six years in the role. We are looking for someone who can lead delivery of Lepra’s 2016 – 2020 strategy, further building on our ‘One Lepra’ approach and driving our key organisational values of innovation, bold leadership and collaboration across our 45 UK and approximately 550 overseas staff.

We are looking to increase our income by 30%, building on our foundations of committed givers through developing corporate and high value donors. Driven by our innovative impact work and quality field activity we want to build new sources of unrestricted and restricted funding and to further develop our advocacy work at local, national and international levels.

Working with an informed and committed board of trustees, this role offers an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to build on firm foundations, increasing Lepra’s influence and reach to improve the lives of people affected by leprosy and other neglected diseases.

Yours sincerely,

Charles Bland Chair of Trustees

Rachna’s StoryWhen Rachna started to find patches on her body, her husband forced her to leave the family home.

In 2010, we diagnosed Rachna with leprosy and helped her access treatment. In 2012, once cured, she became a community ambassador and is now a Lepra employee helping others affected by leprosy. She leads health education camps, teaches self-care and works closely with local leprosy colonies to prevent disability.

In 2015, Rachna joined the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP) advisory panel giving a voice to those affected by the disease on the global stage.

“We need to make people aware of this disease and the fact that, if you take the treatment, you can be cured. If you have taken the treatment you are the same as other people, you can have a normal life, so there should be no discrimination,” she says.
