Forexample, thecompletionofthe GraduateRecordExamination(GRE),CollegeLevel ExaminationProgram(CLEP)examinations,DANTESSubject StandardizedTests(DSSTs),and/orothersimilarequivalency creditsgrantedbyaninstitutionforwork/lifeexperience arenot considerededucationalcoursesforthepurposeofsatisfyingthe academiccertificationeligibilityrequirements. Thesocialsciencesarenotconsideredtobequalifyingsciences. Evaluationofthesciencecontentofabachelors degreewillbe madefromtheofficialtranscripts.Whenfurtherinformation aboutthecontentofadegree,suchascoursedescriptionsor contentis required,theapplicantwillberequestedtoprovidethe informationandreviewofthedegreewillnotproceeduntilthe informationisreceived. Officialtranscriptsforeachdegreearerequired.Anofficial transcriptisonesentdirectlytoABIHbythe collegeor university or,asanalternative,theapplicantmaysubmit officialtranscriptsiftheyareinasealedenvelopewiththe registrarsstampacrosstheseal. Whenadegreeincludes creditswhichweretransferredfromanothercollegeor university,officialtranscriptsforthosecoursecreditsmustbe sentuponrequest. TheBoardwillconsideraU.S.collegeoruniversitytobe acceptablewhenitholdsinstitutionalaccreditationfromoneof thesixRegionalAccreditingBodiesortheDistanceEducation andTrainingCouncilwhicharerecognizedbytheCouncilfor HigherEducationAccreditation(CHEA)andtheUSDepartment ofEducation.Thedegreemustbeawardedduringthetimefor whichtheinstitutionalaccreditationwasissued. AcollegeoruniversitywhichislocatedoutsidetheU.S.willbe consideredforacceptabilityonthebasisofitsaccreditation statusintheeducationsystemwhichhasjurisdiction. Applicants withdegreesawardedoutsideoftheU.S./Canada needto havea reportsubmittedbyanacceptabledegreeevaluationservice (i.e. amemberoftheNationalAssociationofCredentialEvaluation Services,Inc.) tomeettheequivalencyofaU.S.bachelors degreeinbiology,chemistry,physics,industrialhygiene, chemicalengineering,mechanicalengineering,orsanitary engineering. Otherbachelorsdegreesmaybeacceptedsolong asthedegreeisequivalenttoaU.S. bachelorsdegree and representsatleast60semesterhoursofcreditablesubjects,with atleast15ofthosehoursattheupperlevel(junior,senioror graduatelevel). INDUSTRIALHYGIENECOURSEWORK TheBoardrequiresapplicantstodocumentcompletionof180 academiccontacthoursor240continuingeducationcontact hoursofspecificindustrialhygienecourses.At leasthalfofthe requiredcoursework(90academicor120continuingeducation contacthours) mustcoverthebroadsubjectsofindustrial hygiene toxicology,fundamentals ofindustrialhygiene, measurements and controls.</p> <p>Allapplicantsareevaluatedwithoutregardtoage,sex,race, religion,nationalorigin,disabilityormarital status. AllapplicantsmustagreetoadheretotheABIHCodeofEthics andbegovernedbytheABIHEthicsCaseProcedures. Allapplicationmaterials,includingtranscripts,references,and educationalcoursework(includingethics)mustbepostmarked by February1fortheSpringexaminationorAugust1fortheFall examination. Wheninitialreviewofanapplication/reapplicationindicatesthat pertinentinformationisnotclear,supplementalinformationmay berequestedfromtheapplicant.Inthatcase, reviewofthe application/reapplicationwillnotproceeduntiltherequested informationisreceived. DirectorsoftheBoardarenotauthorizedtogiveanopinionto anyapplicantastohis/hereligibility,eitherbeforeorafteran applicationisfiled. AspartoftheABIH recordretentionprogram,filesthathave beeninactiveforthreeyearswillbedestroyed.Priorto destroyingafile,thestaffwillattempttonotifytheapplicant usingtheirlastknownaddress. ACADEMICREQUIREMENTS Graduationfromaregionallyaccreditedcollegeoruniversity,or othercollegeacceptabletotheBoard,withaBachelorsDegreein biology,chemistry,physics,chemicalengineering,mechanical engineering, sanitaryengineering,oranABETaccredited programinindustrialhygiene orsafetyisaccepted. TheBoardwillconsider,andmayaccept,anyotherBachelors Degreefromanacceptablecollegeoruniversity solongasthe degreeisbaseduponappropriatecourseworkandrepresentsat least60semesterhoursofcreditablesubjects,withatleast15of thosehoursattheupperlevel(junior,seniororgraduatelevel). Creditablesubjectsareundergraduateorgraduatelevelcourses inscience,mathematics,engineeringandsciencebased technology. Anapplicantwho isfoundtohaveanunacceptable bachelorsdegreemayremedythatdegreewithadditional academicsciencecourseworkfromanacceptablecollegeor university,orbycompletionofanacceptablecognategraduate degree.</p> <p>1</p> <p>Acceptable toxicology courseswillcovertheessentialaspectsof toxicology(adverseeffectsofchemicalsonlivingsystems)with anemphasisonhumans.Topicscoveredarelikelytoinclude doseresponserelationshipsabsorption,distribution,metabolism andexcretionoftoxicsubstancesinthebodybiotransformation organsystemschemicalcarcinogenesis&amp;mutagenesisetc. Fundamentals coursesarelikelytoaddressrecognizing hazards/stressorsfoundintheworkenvironment.Thisincludes chemical,physical(noise,radiation,thermal),biologicaland ergonomicstressors. Measurement coursesand control (engineering,substitution, administrative,PPE)courseswilladdressthesamefourbroad stressorcategoriesasfundamentals(chemical,physical, biologicalandergonomic). Theremainingcourseworkmaybeinindustrialhygienesubjects thatarenarrowerinscope(i.e.asbestos,lead,mold,confined spaceentry,etc.).Regulatoryrefreshercoursescanonlybe countedonce. TheIHCoursework requirement canbesatisfiedifthenecessary contacthourswerecompletedaspartoftheapplicantsacademic degree. Ifadditionalcourseworkistakentomeetthisrequirement,then academiccourses,continuingeducationcoursesoracombination ofbothcanbesubmitted. Onesemesterhourequals15academic contacthoursandonequarterhourequals10academiccontact hours.OneCEUequals10continuingeducationcontacthours. Fordocumentationof continuingeducationcontacthours,copies ofcertificatesneedtobesentwiththeapplication. Ifthe numberofcontacthoursorCEUsarenotonthecertificate, anagendamustbeincluded. Newapplicantsarerequiredtodocumentthattheyhave completedatleasttwo contacthoursofcourseworkinethics. ThiswillcountaspartofthecurrentIndustrialHygiene courseworkrequirement. Creditforethicsiscappedatfive contacthours. EXPERIENCEREQUIREMENTS Fouryearsofemploymentintheprofessionalpracticeof industrialhygieneacceptabletotheBoardarerequiredtobe eligibleforexamination. Toberecognizedasprofessionallevel work,theexperience mustinclude: Independenceofactions relatestotheamountof planning,selfdirection,decisionmakingandautonomy involvedintheworkexperience Adepthofworkrequirements relatestotheextentto whichworkexperiencerequiresdatagathering,analysis andinterpretation Levelofinteraction relatestothedegreetowhichthe individualinteractswithabroadspectrumofcontacts, includingdecisionmakersand 2</p> <p>Responsibilityforworkoutcome relatestoaccuracy andextenttowhichtheindividualisheldaccountable forhis/herworkanddecisions.</p> <p>Technicianorpreprofessionalexperience isnotcreditable towardseligibility. Creditableexperienceisexpectedtoincludethecontinuumofthe processofIndustrialHygienepracticewhichisanticipation, recognition,evaluation,controlandmanagementofoccupational healthhazards. Experiencecreditmaybegivenforresearch,teachingor IndustrialHygieneprogramadministrationifdoneata professionallevel.Researchorteachingdoneasastudentdoes notearnexperiencecredit. Afterreceiptofanacceptablebachelorsdegree,amasters studentinanABETaccreditedindustrialhygieneprogramoran industrialhygienedoctoralstudentmaybeconsideredtobein industrialhygienepracticeforthepurposeofdetermining his/hereligibilityforexamination.However,onlythe completed advanceddegreewillbecreditedtowardsexperience equivalency. Anapplicant whoisotherwisequalified,butwhoseindustrial hygienecareerhasbeeninterruptedforoneyearorlessfor graduatestudiesinacognatescience,medicalreason, unemployment,orthelike,maybeconsideredtobeinpractice forpurposeofdetermining examinationeligibility.The timespentoutofpracticewillnotreceiveexperiencecredit towardanyfutureexamination. Acandidatemustalsobepracticing broadscope industrial hygiene.Two dimensionsareevaluatedinjudgingthescopeof experience: 1. workfunctionincludesthecontinuumoftheprocess ofIndustrialHygienepractice,whichisanticipation, recognition,evaluation,controlandmanagementof occupationalhealthhazards.Althoughnoproportionof timedevotedtoeachoftheseaspectsisprescribed, broadscopepracticemustexhibitexperienceinthe entireprocess 2. stressorcategoryincludesfourgenericcategoriesof occupationalhealthstressors:chemical,physical, biologicalandergonomic.Experienceisexpectedinat leasttwoofthesefourstressors. Professionallevelexperiencewhichdoesnotmeetthebroad scopecriteriawillbeconsiderednarrowscopeexperience.A maximumofoneyearofnarrowscopeexperiencemaybe creditedtowardseligibility. Amaximum ofoneyearof experienceequivalency maybe creditedforindustrialhygienedegreesfrominstitutions acceptabletotheBoard.Forbachelorslevelindustrialhygiene degrees,sixmonthsexperiencecreditwillbeawardedonlywhen theprogramisaccreditedbytheaccreditationBoardfor Engineering&amp;Technology(ABET).Formasterslevelindustrial hygienedegreesawardedafterDecember31,1996,oneyear</p> <p>experiencecreditwillbeawardedonlywhentheprogramis accreditedbyABET.Oneyearmaybegrantedforanacceptable doctoraldegree,providedthatthegraduatedegreeisinindustrial hygieneandthatallacademicrequirementshavebeen completed. REFERENCES Aminimum oftwoprofessionalreferencesmustbeprovided. Areferencefromanapplicantscurrentsupervisorisrequiredto documentcurrentindustrialhygienepractice. Theremustbeareferencefromtheapplicantsimmediate supervisor(s)coveringtheentiretimeperiodforwhichthe applicantrequestsexperiencecredit.Whenanapplicantis/wasa principalinabusiness,theBoardwillacceptreferencesfrom majorclients. TheremustalsobeareferencefromaCIHwhoisfamiliarwith theapplicantsindustrialhygieneworkandcandescribe,from firsthandexperience,thenatureoftheapplicantsindustrial hygieneresponsibilities.TheCIHreferencemayalsobea supervisoryreference. Intheeventthatno CIH isavailablewhoisfamiliarwiththe applicantsindustrialhygienework,theapplicantmaysubstitute areferencefromanindividualcertifiedattheprofessionallevel byanorganizationwhoseindustrial/occupationalhygiene certificationschemehasbeenrecognizedbytheInternational OccupationalHygieneAssociation/IOHA.Anotheralternativeis toprovidethreewrittenworkexampleswhichdemonstratea rangeofindustrialhygieneactivities.Theexamplesmustspan thetimeperiodbeingclaimedasprofessionallevelexperience andbeidentifiableastheapplicantsownwork.Workexamples will notbereturnedunlessspecificallyrequested. EachreferencemustbeprovidedontheBoardsProfessional ReferenceQuestionnaireform,haveanoriginalsignatureandbe preparedonlybythepersongivingthereference.Itis unacceptable fortheapplicanttocompletetheformandhaveit signedbyhisorherreference. EachProfessionalReferenceQuestionnairemustbemailed orfaxeddirectlytoABIHbythepersongivingthereference. Anapplicantsspouseorotherrelative,apersonwhomthe applicantsupervises,oramemberoftheBoardmaynotactasa referenceforanapplicant.Referencesarenotacceptedifwritten bytheapplicant. AProfessionalReferenceQuestionnairewhichdoesnotcomply withtherequirementsofthissectionwillnotbeacceptedby ABIH. EachProfessionalReferenceQuestionnaireshallremain confidentialbetweentheauthorandABIH.</p> <p>TESTACCOMODATIONS TheAmericanBoardofIndustrialHygiene(ABIH)provides reasonableaccommodations,inaccordancewiththeAmericans withDisabilitiesAct asamendedandotherapplicablelaws,for individualswithdocumenteddisabilitieswhodemonstrateaneed foraccommodation...</p>
