Monthly Bench Tips

By Brad Smith

SHEET & WIRE STORAGE

The more you work with jewelry, the more problems you have finding the piece of metal you need. My pieces of sheet were generally stored in various plastic bags, and the wire was in separate coils. Few were marked, so it often took me a while to locate that piece of 26 ga fine sheet I bought last year, especially since I usually take my supplies back and forth to classes.

A tip from a friend helped me organize everything. I bought an expanding file folder from the office supplies store (the kind that has 13 slots and a folding cover) and marked the tabs for each gauge of metal I use. Then I marked all my pieces of sheet with their gauge, put them in plastic bags, marked the gauge on the bag, and popped them into the folder. I usually store coils of wire loose in the folder, but they can also be bagged if you prefer. I use one tab for bezel wire and one for the odd, miscellaneous items.

The resulting folder is really convenient when I want to take my metal out to a class or work-shop, and it's colorful enough for me to easily find in the clutter of the shop !

------------- LITTLE BALLS

I often use little balls of silver and gold as accent pieces on my designs. They can be made as needed from pieces of scrap. Cut the scrap into little pieces, put them on a solder pad and melt them with a torch. Then throw the balls into a small cup of pickle. If you need to make all the balls the same size, you need the same amount of metal to melt each time. The best way to

do that is to clip equal lengths of wire. But there's an easier way to get a good supply of balls. Some casting grain comes in near perfect ball form. Just grab your tweezers and pick out the ones you need. When you need larger quantities of balls, pour the casting grain out onto a baking pan, tilt the pan a bit, and let all the round pieces roll to the bot-

tom. Bag the good ones, and pour the rest back into your bag for casting. Balls can be sorted into different sizes using multiple screens.

Editors Notes By Shannon Byrd Join us on August 3 for our regular monthly meeting. We will be having a business meeting this August for the first time since I joined the club. Bring your special creations and a snack to share your with the group. Please send your favorite recipes to Pegatha at [email protected] for the CMGS cookbook. Our raffles have been a lot of fun and continue to raise funds to send 2 lucky members of the club to William Holland or Wildacres each year. Thank you to those that participate and those that continue to donate items for the raffle.

Mineral Of The Month – Smithsonite

By Dave Jacobson

This month we will examine smithsonite, ZnCO3, zinc carbonate.. Smithsonite is normally found in the oxidation zone of sulfide deposits of zinc lead or copper. Typically it is a sedimentary precipitate pro-duced by the action of zinc sulfate rich water on carbonite rocks. Associated minerals are hemimorphite, cerussite, wulfenite, limonite, mimetite, dolomite, aurichalcite, calcite and other carbonite minerals. It is found in many locations in the world. Tsumeb, Namibia, Africa and the Broken Hill Mine in Zambia, Af-rica as well as the Kelly Mine , Magdalena, New Mexico are mentioned in most of my field guides. In the USA other notable sites are in Colorado, Arizona and Utah and Idaho. Some other locations in the world are in Mexico; Laurion, Greece; Bytom, Poland; and Moresnet, Begium. . Smithsonite is an ore of zinc. It is sought after as a mineral specimen due to it’s wide range of colors Smithsonite is in the hexagonal crystal system. Smithsonites most common habit is the botryoidal form, which is a form typical of a bunch of grapes. Hematite is also found in this form. Smithsonite has a whole range of colors such as, apple green, blue-green, lavender, purple, yellow, white, tan, brown, blue, orange, peach, gray , pink, red and colorless. Luster can be vitreous, mother of pearl, greasy or transpar-ent. Fracture is uneven, conchoidal and brittle. Hardness is 4 to 4.5. Specific Gravity is 4.4. Streak is white. Smithsonite is named after James Smithson (1754 – 1829), the founder of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. I used the following reference materials in preparing this article.
