Herman Miller’s 10,000-square-foot To-ronto National Design Centre has drawn raves for its inspired use of wood. Lo-cated at the company’s headquarters in an early-20th-century warehouse, it was the first LEED-certified interior in Canada. Plywood panels envelop the space, which also features butt-jointed fir plywood panels, routed in striped patterns and at differing depths to show off multiple grains of wood. Dot-screen vinyl graphics of Herman Miller factory work, along with two custom lighting elements made of the seats and backs of Eames lounge chairs, put the company’s stamp on the space.
In addition to the stunning surround-ings, visitors will get to see iconic pieces like the Eames molded plywood chair and its molded plastic counterpart, as well as more office-oriented pieces: the famous, and ubiquitous, Aeron task chair, and the popular Resolve system line.

The venerable Global Group is a main-stay of the Canadian contract furnishings industry. In business for over 40 years, Global started out with the inexpensive Executive chair, and has since become the sixth largest furniture manufacturer in the world. Its Global Upholstery division bills itself as the “Total Office Solution,” offering ergonomic furniture, systems furniture, filing and storage solutions, and panel systems, all in a wide range of fin-ishes. And, of course, there’s the company’s signature: seating, be it reception, task or managerial.

Once a derelict hold-over of Victorian industry, Allsteel and (sister company) Gunlocke’s new Toronto resource centre in trendy Liberty Village is now a source of inspiration. Erected in 1899, the build-ing once housed the boilers that powered the looms of a carpet factory. It’s a fitting place for a company that places sound environmental practices high on its list of priorities.
The 8,000-square-foot sustainable space was designed by figure3 to meet LEED Silver criteria. Many of the origi-nal interior materials and details were incorporated. Sleek groupings of lounges and guest seating stand out against red brick walls; workstations look less impos-ing in the soaring, open spaces. Even the building’s peculiarities are made to work in its favour: the ample below-grade space is used to show off Allsteel’s systems fur-niture, while the circular area formed by the smokestack base is home to a huddle of lounge chairs.

When it came its new Toronto space, Knoll Design Group’s Karen Stone and Kenjo Ito held true to company co-founder Florence Knoll’s principles: incorporating light, open spaces furnished with woven fabrics, wall panels and furniture groupings. The showroom, located in Liberty Village, is in a renovated 19th-century industrial building boasting a drool-worthy feature: 22 large, evenly-spaced windows that run along the west wall, bathing the space in warm light.
Visitors to the new showroom, which clocks in at twice the size of its predeces-sor, can see signature items, such as the European-flavoured AutoStrata systems furniture line; the Life chair; and the en-tire KnollStudio collection, including icons like Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair and Eero Saarinen’s Tulip pedestal chair.

Inscape has just put the finishing touches on the revamped showroom at its corpo-rate headquarters. The company, based in Holland Landing, Ont., saw a grow-ing trend in the North American market towards a more European style of work environment, and wanted the new space to show off the flexibility of Inscape’s products. The broad selection of applica-tions displayed shows designers how they can mix, match and play with its systems products to create unique, stimulating and functional work environments.
Many non-cubicle creations offer inspi-ration. For instance, the Fronté moveable storefront walls and the Interval post-and-beam architectural framework make divid-ing work spaces easier and more elegant. Systems furnishings, like the slim-profile Scala and the more traditional and cable-friendly Platform, are mixed and mingled with storage systems like Planna, a case-good and credenza system, and Storwal, a system of fixed and moveable components.

Haworth is rubbing shoulders with the high rollers at its 13,000-square-foot showroom in the heart of Toronto’s finan-cial district. Perkins + Will/Eva Maddox Branded Environments and IBI Group created a space with moveable walls and raised access floors, the better to show off Haworth’s product lines. It’s even applied for LEED certification. Not all the green around the neighbourhood is money.
Haworth’s newly renovated Calgary showroom and learning centre has won a Silver award in the Retail category of the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia’s annual design competition. Like its little brother back east, the 23,000-square-foot space was built on sustainable design principles. Busby Perkins + Will/Eva Maddox were also behind this project.

Although Teknion’s signature colour is white, the company went green for its new Calgary showroom – figuratively speaking, that is. Vanderbyl Design and Teknion’s own showroom facilities team created a light, airy, 4,700-square-foot space with LEED certification guidelines in mind. The District furniture system, Optos glass wall and Fitz task seating bask in the glow of natural light, set off by the new Finland White fabric specified across the product portfolio.
The Calgary showroom follows a precedent set by the team of Teknion and Vanderbyl in the two-year-old redesign of the Toronto showroom at Teknion’s corporate headquarters. Meant to be an interpretation of the office of the future, the Toronto space features layers of white graphic elements, partition walls, flooring, fabrics and upholstery, creating a bright but warm background for the products.
Teknion has cross-country coverage, with additional showrooms in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg.

Keilhauer started out with the goal of manufacturing high-quality commercial seating on time. Over 25 years later, the company has firmly established its place in the industry, producing task chairs like the Morley and the award-winning Simple, both by Mark Kapka; and the Tom, by Tom Deacon.
Keilhauer is continuing its tradition of quality and collaboration.
