Part 9 Work Stairs, Ramps Handrails & Guards

JTG Recommendation• All Ramps - Sentence 9.8.5.2.(1)

– minimum width of 1100 mm (consistent with Part 3) regardless of use, occupancy and location

• Ramps within Dwelling Units - Sentence 9.8.5.2. (2) – No change! Require width of 860mm

Page 13: Canadian Code Centre Presentation - October 2012

Part 9 Work Stairs, Ramps Handrails & Guards

JTG Recommendations:

• Use the term tapered treads in curved flight• Keep the term winder to designate specific treads that

converge to a point allowed only inside dwelling units (9.8.4.5.)

• Develop a definition for run, flight and tapered tread

Part 9 uses Part 3 usesCurved Stairs in other than Exit Stairs angled tread curved or spiral stair

Curved Stairs in Exits “angled treads in required exit stairs” "curved stair" and "tapered treads"

Winders Winders designate "treads that

converge to a point allowed only inside dwelling units"

Other Terms "Curved flight" and "curved run" are both used

Part 9 Work Stairs, Ramps Handrails & Guards Flight with Mixed Treads within Dwelling Units (New) TG Recommendations• Tapered treads and rectangular treads shall have :

– a consistent run measured 300 mm from the handrail (so that one does not transit from a larger to a smaller tread run)

– a handrail on the inner side of the stair

Except– Where tapered treads are located at the bottom of the flight,

the run of the tapered tread may exceed the run of the rectangular tread.

– as permitted in 9.8.4.5.(Winders)

Rules• Transition from rectangular treads to tapered treads allowed• Transition from tapered treads to rectangular treads allowed• Where tapered treads at the bottom of flight, consistent run

not required• Transition larger to smaller treads not allowed

they serve not more than 3 persons– 1 bedroom apartment– Small office (27.7 m2)– Mercantile use (11.1 m2)

• Construction parameters to NFPA 101

Page 27: Canadian Code Centre Presentation - October 2012

Part 9 Work Stairs, Ramps Handrails & GuardsFall Protection Issues9.8.8.5.Protection of Open Stringers• Limit to 150 mm the size of open stringers. This is a relaxation from

current interpretation (100 mm)and has no impact on stairs were the guards are installed close to the nosing.

9.8.7.1. Handrails on the narrow side of Winders and tapered treads

• Clarification and this is often the current practice

9.8.7.4. Height of Handrails• NBC 2012 allows an expanded range of installation from 865 to 965 mm • Proposal: 865 to 1070 mm

Page 28: Canadian Code Centre Presentation - October 2012

Canadian Codes Centre – TRC Update – October 2012

Part 9 Work Stairs, Ramps Handrails & GuardsFall Protection Issues9.8.7.5.(1) Clearances of Handrails to Rough or Abrasive Surfaces• Require 60 mm instead of 50 mm where handrails are installed on rough

surfaces

9.8.8.1. Required Guards and Exceptions• Harmonize the guard requirement to a single criterion (600 mm) no

impact, simplify regulation

No Change• Protection at Windows• Openings in Guards• Slip Resistance and Contrasting Identification

Page 29: Canadian Code Centre Presentation - October 2012

Canadian Codes Centre – TRC Update – October 2012

Part 9 Work Stairs, Ramps Handrails & GuardsIssues Still Under Discussion• Graspability of handrails• Protection of open risers in dwelling units• Continuity of handrails• Height of guards within dwelling units• Design to prevent climbing
