CCCM is alive and well in
French! All the efforts made
over the last few years have
allowed us to get to know each
other better and to call on each
other for advice, support, ideas,
or just for professional decom-
pression. All throughout the
network, our Catholic Students
Associations are taking root
and growing. New and innova-
tive projects are sprouting,
whether they’re artistic, liturgical,
social or spiritual in nature. This
year’s participation of Franco-
phone students and campuses in
Catholic Students Week was par-
ticularly impressive. We’re all
thrilled! So it seems that this
burst of life calls us to ask a
question: how do we, as an asso-
ciation, continue to encourage
and facilitate the participation of
our francophone students in our
regional and national events? It’s
time to think together and join
forces for a more integrated cam-
pus ministry experience!

A Year of Re-Imagining and
Re-Visioning at CCCM By: Susan Kidd, CND, (UPEI)
Chair, CCCM Board
Oh what a difference a year
makes? Many are aware the
CCCM Board opted to not hire a
new national coordinator last fall
and to engage in a strategic
planning process. We felt it was
better to get a better grasp of
our espoused values and then
hire a coordinator to help us
attain and sustain them. Phew
… the board knew it meant each
one had to re-commit time and
energy to the organization with-
out the presence of a coordina-
tor. And the rest of the life of
our national organization rolled
along. Our Annual Report 2014-
2015 offers a glimpse into all
that has made up this academic
year.
We consulted a lawyer whose
expertise is charity law to be
sure we were in alignment with
the new not-for-profit laws with
Canada Revenue Agency. Fear
not! All is well with CCCM and
CRA. Still on the to-do list (soon
to be a ta-da list) is updating our
by-laws.
Conference 2014 Ministry in
Higher Education: The Context,
the Mission, the Vision was
hosted by our colleague at Ryer-
son University, Oriana Ber-
tucci. With the help of the
archdiocesan campus
minsters and the central
office, the conference was
one of the biggest to date.
44 delegates actively par-
ticipated in conferences offered
by Gertrude Rompre, Mary Jo
Leddy and Pierre-Oliver Tremblay
OMI.
The 2014 conference and AGM
set the path for this year: Re-
Vision, Re-Imagine, Re-Create
Campus Ministers Dream the
Future. And there can be no
better place than Prince Edward
Island, under the watchful eye of
our dear Anne of Green Gables
to make this happen.
Happy Reading!

Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry (CCCM) is a national network of professional Catholic
campus ministers, grounded in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, inspired by the
vision of Vatican II. CCCM exists to bring the Gospel of Christ to the academic world through
a national network; the ministry of the National Coordinator and the Board; publications,
programs and other means of sharing resources; national and regional Campus Ministers’
and Students’ conferences. CCCM has its roots in the early Catholic Colleges in Canada,
dating back over 200 years. His Eminence Cardinal McGuigan was its first Episcopal
moderator in 1946. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) named the first
National Chaplain in 1948. The Canadian Catholic Student Association (CCSA) is
intrinsically linked to the CCCM by history, mission and spirit. It is a member of one of the
oldest international student movements, the International Movement of Catholic Students
(IMCS). CCCM is recognized as a private lay association of the faithful by the CCCB (2011).

From May 27-30th, 2014 campus ministers from across Canada
met in Toronto at Ryerson Univeristy. Through the week, we ex-
plored the theme of Ministry in Higher Education: the Context, the
Mission and the Vision.
Gertrude Rompre opened the discussion with a fascinating look at
trends in higher education and the explored the critical role of the
Church in this field. After setting the scene, Dr. Mary Jo Leddy
spoke to the hearts of the campus ministers, discussing how we
can embody our mission as faith-filled leaders in the changing con-
text in which we work. As the Gospel clearly lays out, our mission is
to go out into the field. Pierre Olivier Tremblay, OMI outlined some
of the challenges and unexpected opportunities by which we can
propose the Faith within the sphere of higher education. It left us
thinking about where we are going and the important role we must
play for our young people today.
The Sherlock Lecture welcomed Stephen Lazarus, a producer from
CBC’s “Context with Lorna Dueck” who reflected on the controversial
nature of faith in education and religious freedom present in our culture
today. Once again, the conversations lingered long into the evening!
We were grateful for the large number of campuses present at the conference, including an
increase from our francophone ministries. The conference was a time to renew friendships,
discuss opportunities to expand our mission in higher education and explore new avenues
to ensure campus ministries are able to serve the ever changing and increasing needs our
of campuses, students, faculty and staff.
Ministry in Higher Education:
The Context, the Mission, the Vision
2014 National Conference
By Sabrina di Matteo (Université de Montréal)
At the 2014 Annual General Meeting, CCCM members learned that a strategic planning ini-
tiative was made possible by an anonymous donation. Though many of us didn’t know what
exactly such a project would look like, it was clear that a time of reflection on our organiza-
tion, its practices, its vision and challenges, was relevant and would pave the way for a
stronger future. Professional coach Martin Itzkow, founder of Defy Gravity Coaching, special-
izing in organizational development, change management and a values-driven approach,
was the chosen consultant. The Board called on three members to form a steering commit-
tee: Nancy Quan (chair of the committee), Marilyn Elphick and Sabrina Di Matteo.
First, the steering committee put together a values-based survey which was sent to mem-
bers. The amazing response to the survey helped understand what values members see in
CCCM’S current culture, what values members wish to see in the future, and what values
members identify with personally. Secondly, an invitation was extended to members and
non-members (who had not been surveyed) to participate in a conference call discussion,
which drew on the values-based survey questions.
In March, the Board and steering committee met with Martin Itzkow. The team reviewed the
survey results, drew out reflections based on what members pointed out as important chal-
lenges, hopes and basis for a shared vision: CCCM, awakening the heart of post-secondary
education. The espoused values were defined by the steering committee in the weeks lead-
ing up to the annual conference in Charlottetown. A handbook for members is being worked
on, following the feedback at the conference workshops. It will focus on how our values are
lived at various levels of CCCM and campus ministry: Vision and Mission Focus, Growth and
Development, Embracing Diversity, and Integrity.

was accomplished with
ongoing reflection on
Catholic Social Teaching

our lives as the Catholic
faithful, particularly in
light of Pope Francis.
The students’ response
to the weekend was very
positive and they hope

The Global Connections
Committee had a chal-
lenging year without the
leadership of the Cana-
dian Catholic Campus
Ministry Coordinator. It
is clear that this role is
essential to disseminate
information effectively to
the CCCM and CCSA, to
coordinate planning ef-
forts and for account-
ability. Communication
disruptions proved to be
particularly challenging.
No information was sent
to the Global Connec-
tions Committee regard-
ing the IMCS UN study
sessions and therefore
campuses were unable
to attend. This is unfor-
tunate as momentum
was building for this pro-
gram after a very suc-
cessful experience in
2014.

Building Catholic Student Leadership

Earlier this year, the Canadian Catholic Students Association gathered together in Toronto to discuss its
goals and expectations for the coming year. The national executive, consisting of representatives for the
Western, Central, and Atlantic regions, prayed for the Canadian Catholic Church, while contemplating the
importance of ministry on university campuses. To this end, we set the following goal for our year:
In 2015, CCSA will strengthen its outreach by communicating to students across Canada (via social me-
dia, parishes, secondary schools, and the wider Catholic community) Therefore, we will strive to actively
live out our faith.
The CCSA would like to assure our prayers to the Canadian Catholic Campus Ministers (CCCM), the Ca-
nadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), as well as the other organizations who continue to sup-
port us. We ask God to bless us in all our activities as we bring many people together. Heavenly Father,
fill us with joy at your love for us, and help us to always meet one another in that same love.

Nuns of Montreal, Sisters of Saint Martha
of Antigonish, the Redemptorists, and
especially the Canadian Conference of
Catholic Bishops for their generous
ongoing support.
After hosting the inaugural conference call in April 2014, and in-person meeting in August
2014, the members of the National Chaplaincy Administrator Network (NCAN), have devel-
oped a growing network of chaplains across the country, working in multifaith settings.
Through this network, members now have a community to share common goals and chal-
lenges in their field.
NCAN has developed into the Spirituality and Religious Pluralism Community at the
(CACUSS). This allows members to be part of a well-known and recognized organization,
while providing CACUSS and universities in general with ongoing information about the
presence of religious pluralism on campus.
Topics related to religious pluralism continue to be important, as questions about the role
of religion in public institutions continue to be asked. The members of the Spirituality and
Religious Pluralism community engage these conversations by exploring how they relate to
the secular environment in which they, and their students, work.

In February, campuses across the country participated in Catho-
lic Students Week. A variety of events were held, including
prayer, faith studies, social justice outreach and socials. The
week provided opportunities for various Catholic student groups
on campuses to work together to host events, including partner-
ships with Catholic Christian Outreach and Newman Clubs. In
the Atlantic region, Catholic Students Week brought together two
different campuses via social media. St. Francis Xavier Univer-
sity and the University of Prince Edward Island launched a social
media event during the week, #AskACatholic.
Of course, Pope Francis
made appearances at
various events across the
country!
