Funding the Best Research Survivors Among Us — Heidi’s Storyeffects. These new findings should lead to clinical practice changes.

With Society support, Dr. Sung is also looking for differences in immune system genes that make some kids with AML more prone to serious infections.

Now involved with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life fundraising event, Heidi has spoken across the region in support of more research to reduce the harmful side effects of treatment for childhood cancers. “It’s exciting for me to see the research that’s trying to fix what I went through,” she says.

The Society offers free support and information for people living with cancer, their caregivers, family and friends.

To learn more about these services, visit www.cancer.ca or call 1 888 939-3333.

Heidi Hayes, 15, a former child actor and avid athlete from Orillia, was only nine when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which has a high survival rate but also many side effects from treatment. During her two and a half years of chemotherapy, which kills cancer cells but damages the body’s immune system, Heidi had serious infections and was taken to hospital many times.

This energetic, enthusiastic teen struggled with mood swings, sudden weight gain and other side effects from the heavy-duty steroids that were part of her treatment. “I had temper tantrums because my mom wouldn’t get me cheese pizza. I would gain five to seven pounds every time I was on steroids for a five-day period,” recalls Heidi.

For many children with cancer, side effects and complications from treatment are serious problems. For example, more than 70 per cent of kids with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) get severe infections and five to 10 per cent die of complications of their treatment, not the cancer. Dr. Lillian Sung, a pediatric oncologist at the Hospital for Sick Children, is looking for ways to reduce the high risk of complications. She led a recent Canadian Cancer Society-funded study showing that corticosteroids, which may be included in treatment to help prevent side effects or improve chemotherapy, may also increase the risk of infection in children with AML.

“Physicians often don’t need to use steroids and when possible they should avoid using them,” says Dr. Sung, noting that some guidelines now discourage corticosteroid use in children with AML to reduce toxicity and side

Research is our second-best weapon against cancer – after you. After all, we couldn’t continue to fund the best cancer research in the country without your support. You’ve fuelled a lot of progress. For one thing, we have a much better understanding of the 200+ diseases called cancer. Improved treatments with prevention strategies are helping Canadians live longer.

Many people ask about the quality of research we fund. How do we ensure we’re funding the best quality cancer research in Canada? We use a rigorous peer-review system and continuously monitor and evaluate the success of our programs. We take pride in our internationally respected peer-review process. The process is an arduous one, but ensures that we fund the best cancer research in the country. How does it work?

After researchers submit applications for funding, each grant application is assigned to be evaluated by a team of researchers known as a review panel.

Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) assembles specific review

Lung Cancer DetectivesUp to half of lung cancer patients develop cancers that spread to the brain. But little is known about what promotes this spread (metastases) and few treatment options are available. Dr. Sheila Singh in Hamilton has identified a group of tumour-initiating cells in brain metastases from the lung, along with a set of genes in patient samples that could predict survival outcomes. These genes may be useful targets for drugs to block metastases and could have a powerful impact on the treatment and prognosis of cancer patients.

Research in Your Backyard

“ If we can identify which children are more susceptible, we can target treatment to reduce their infection risk and prevent some kids from dying,” says Dr. Sung.

“ It’s exciting for me to see the research that’s trying to fix what I went through,” says Heidi.

panels for each funding competition. One or two non-researchers (community representatives), often cancer survivors or volunteers, also sit on each panel. They evaluate the research in the “real world” and the relevance of the research to the community.

Before each review panel meets, reviewers consider all the applications before them. Each scientific member also prepares detailed written critiques of a number of assigned applications, either as primary or secondary

reviewer. These critiques are presented in panel meetings and are used as the basis of an in-depth discussion process by the entire panel, led by the panel chair.

Based on discussions at the panel meetings, scores are assigned to each application. Results of these meetings are provided to the Advisory Council on Research (ACOR), who make a recommendation to the Society on which grants should be funded based on the funding available and the quality of the application.
