Julian HoughIt is with deep sadness that we have to report thepassing of one of Derby CAMRAs nest evercampaigners, Julian Hough who was a well knownand much liked gure not just locally butRegionally and Nationally as well.Until recently he served with distinction onCAMRAs National Executive Committee, the onlyDerby Branch member to achieve this status andbefore that he was CAMRAs East MidlandsRegional Director. Locally Julian performed anumber of jobs within the Branch including theChair of the National Members weekend & AGM inDerby in 2000, Branch Treasurer and CommitteeMember but is perhaps best known for his work at

the Derby City Charter Summer Beer Festivalwhere he was simply Mr Beer Festival the manwho knew where everything went and howeverything was organised.Julians outstanding commitment and work forCAMRA will be much missed by the campaign andhe will be remembered with fondness throughoutthe Country by all who knew him, CAMRAcolleagues, friends and family alike. Derby CAMRAmay have lost one of its nest but I know Julian willbe forever with us at the City Charter Fest makingsure that everything runs just as it should and if itdoesnt Im sure hell let us know !!!Gareth Stead

Heres the full line upWEDNESDAY EVE Rock band NoWaytoNorway are a touringband from Osnabruck. The name came about when the band

vehicle broke down on the way to Norway to secure animportant recording contract they never made it. Hopefully, they will make it tonight and make their impression on themarquee stage. Out local Herron Brothers start theproceedings with a couple of acoustic guitars and a host of easy listening songs you may like to sing along to. Also,Ripley Morris Men will be strutting their stuff with a coupleof sets of traditional Cotswolds dances.THURSDAY EVE Wille and the Bandits continue touringand honing their unique sound. The band have createdsomething rather special with a cult following right acrossEurope, which continues to grow with every passing day.Although difficult to pigeon-hole their style, they never fail toconnect with their audience. Love the soul in the music Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2. Support band Weathering Eye,premier midlands rockers, fronted by Colin Aardvark Fowler.FRIDAY EVE The Wam Bam Band bring rock, soul and skafrom a very big band indeed - a four-piece horn section, foursingers and rhythm section. They are no strangers to DerbySummer Beer Festival, this being their fourth visit. If you likethe sound of The Commitments, and The Blues Brothers, getout your dancing trousers and get ready to party. The eveningis supported by The Dark Horses, who like having a laugh onstage and performing songs from the sixties to present day. They have been retro-rocking the Midlands for over ve years.

SATURDAY EVE Headline band Ferocious Dog take thestage. This six-piece, contemporary folk band continue to takefestivals by storm nationwide, and in Europe, playing a mix of high-energy folk, ska and punk, as inspired by the likes of TheLevellers and The Pogues. They never fail to get the place jumping. Warning: the band can tend to whip mosh fans into abit of a frenzy so hang on to your beer and stand well back! Those who say Derby Beer Festival entertainment needslivening up this could be it!! Support band are The StrangeQuartet, featuring Lauren Strange on vocals. Using some of their own material, theres not much this band cant handle, from musical theatre to Motown and heavy rock.

MUSICAL AFTERNOONSTHURSDAY Martin Atterbury brings the sound of thetheatre organ, playing old songs from Edwardian times, to thesixties. Martin has guested many times on the Blackpool TowerBallroom Wurlitzer.

FRIDAY Derby band Brookside Jazz make their debut. Fiveseasoned musicians playing good-time foot tapping stuff.SATURDAY Plenty of musical atmosphere in the marqueethis af ternoon. On stage 3 Eyed Fox, folk-rock ddle band, plus Black Pig Border Morris and Sheffield Steel (all girlrapper/sword dancers).SUNDAY The festival rocks out with Blues Town, plus a fewstage guests, bringing out some of the best in rock, rhythmand blues to play out the festival.

in a different position) and tribute bands ll the concert room. Today, the Pot is still innovating with on-suiteaccommodation available and Tuesday Gurkha curry nightsproving popular. The Golden Eagle on Agard Street has had afew face-lifts over the years but with former college VicePrincipal, Brian Collins, at the helm, its future looks secure. Theunusual, eye catching exterior artwork pays homage to somenotable Derby industrialists including clockmaker, JohnWhitehurst. Inside, Titan beers brewed nearby in gleaming, stainless steel vessels, rub shoulders with guests, and there is apleasant patio to the rear. Quiz fans should note that theWednesday night quiz is well worth seeking out. Trevor Harrisof Derby Brewing Company has an impressive track record of rescuing dilapidated pubs and turning them into goingconcerns. Trevor (with the late John Evans) will always beremembered for his magni cent restoration of the Brunswick but in recent years he has revived the fortunes of The Tap(formerly Royal Standard) and Greyhound, Friar Gate. Bothhostelries serve Derby Brewing Company beers with guests, and The Tap has bene tted from recent redecoration thatneutralized its minimalist feel. The Greyhound is the mucholder of the two buildings and retains a period replace, but

contemporary interior design and a roof terrace (`a la The Tap)have proven very popular in Georgian Friar Gate. Two formerDerby licensees who had a big impact on the citys real alescene were Nigel Barker and Terry Holmes, each of whom ranthe Dolphin and Silk Mill during the past quarter of a century.Between their tenures of the Silk Mill, the Full Street pub fellon hard times, and it wasnt until Terry took over that itregained its status as one of Derbys foremost ale houses, winning Derby CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2011. Following Terrys retirement to Ireland, Martin Roper and Denise Sagehave taken charge and an enticing food menu and attractiveside patio have been added to a good range of beers. The

foundations of the Peacock no longer shake to the passing byof heavy traffic on Nottingham Road, once the main A52artery to and from our neighbouring city. Now ensconced in aslightly more peaceful setting, Penny and Roger Myring servesome cracking ales including a house beer fromLeatherbritches, Peacock Pale Ale, and beers brewed by theHartshorn brothers. In a different era, Hartshorn brewerysproximity would have enabled dray horse delivery. Penny andRoger are well known in this neck of the woods, havingpreviously run the Friargate (Bishops Blaise) and Smith eld. There were a few furrowed brows when the Smith eld, sittingon a valuable parcel of land on Meadow Road, was marketedfor sale a while back, especially as the area is earmarked forredevelopment. Long a Bass house run by the Conneelyfamily, and pre-1990 known as the Cattle Market Hotel whenthe beasts were sold just across the river, before the bridgewas removed to isolate the pub from the town centre. Thankfully, buyer, Paul Clark, who frequented the pub onRams match days, restored it to a high standard and hisWestminster Building Company occupies the rst oor. TheSmith eld boasts a delightful river terrace from where a pintof Whim or Oakham can be enjoyed whilst taking in the oraand fauna of the Derwent. Make no mistake, this pub couldeasily have been bulldozed, but, happily, we can continue topatronise the Smithy.

Derbyshire Ale and its ilk may belong to a different era,but its intrinsic permanence will never be matched by on-line technology.

Sub-Branch NewsBeer Festival is Back We are pleased to announce that we have

nally managed to settle on a date and venuefor our second beer festival. We will bereturning to Ashbourne Town Hall, opening onFriday 10th October and continuing throughSaturday 11th into Sunday 12th. We hope tooffer a similar volume of beer to last year, butwill be opting for 50-60 different choices thistime, as well as an expanded cider and perryrange. We will have a similar line-up of music tolast years events and hopefully a good range of locally supplied food as well. We have aFacebook page up and running (AshbourneCamra Beer Festival) and should also have awebpage up and running soon, so willannounce developments as soon as they occur. Some details will also be available on the Derbybranch website.

Pub NewsDave Paterson at the Bowling Green in Ashbournereports that the introduction of the third guest alehandpump there has proved to be a great successand he plans to continue introducing regularlyrotating guests on a permanent basis. Breweriesrepresented in recent weeks have beenSpringhead, Peakstones Rock and Wincle to name just a few.

The wet weather in recent weeks has tried to playhavoc with some local festivals, but the Horns in

Ashbourne (early May) and the Bentley Brook Innat Fenny Bentley (Spring Bank Holiday) bothploughed on regardless. The Bentley Brook festival in their marquee did put on a goodimpression of a typical Glastonbury-style mudfest, but nonetheless a good time was had by thosewho squelched their way through it.

The next local pub beer festival on the horizon isthe Bluebell at Tissington, taking place over the

August Bank Holiday. Details of any other localbeer festivals or other events can be sent to the e-mail address at the top of this page for inclusionin upcoming editions.

The former White Lion on Buxton Hill which has inrecent years been several different versions of restaurants, is about to re-open as Whites Bar &Restaurant, a potential welcome addition to thelocal scene. The sub-branch will be keen tosupport the venture and will report on theopening in the next edition.

The owners of the Green Man complex have nowsubmitted plans for a new pub area situated in the

area formerly occupied by LeatherbritchesBrewery. It is mooted as a family-friendlygastropub, to possibly be known as The OldBrewery, and it is hoped to be ready to openbefore Christmas.

Whilst technically not within the sub-branchsarea, but very close by the western boundary, YeOlde Royal Oak at Wetton looks to be prosperingwell under new management. A free house ingreat walking country, they regularly take beersfrom local breweries such as Storm and Wincleand the landlord is looking to widen his scope asfar as possible with his beer choice.

    Early May means Reading

Beer and Cider Festival, aspecial occasion for cider andperry lovers because the nal judging of CAMRAs cider andperry of the year competitionstake place here. Ciders andperries from all over thecountry are on the bar, thosein the competition havingwon through by being placedin regional competitions heldthroughout the year. Judgingis by blind tasting, and judging rounds at Readingreduce the numbers further.

This is a fantastic opportunityto get personally involved, because the panel membersare ordinary festival goers, theonly quali cation being aninterest in real cider / perry. After the nal, judged byinvited expert / celebritypanellists the result is eagerlyawaited. This year the winningcider was Sheppys medium, a

fruity cider with a delicious, fresh aftertaste. Sheppys is nearBradford-on-Tone, on the A38between Taunton and

Wellington, an easy stop off on

the way to Devon or Cornwall. It is quite a large out t withextensive orchards and a well-stocked farm shop. Thewinning perry was Olivers, asmooth, soft perry, yet burstingwith avour. Olivers is at OclePychard, just of the A465between Bromyard andHereford near Burley Gate. There is a shop selling a widerange of ciders and perries, wellworth a look if you are in thearea.

Both of these winners will beon sale at the Derby SummerFestival, held Im sure you willknow by now, from 9th to 13thJuly in a marquee outside theAssembly Rooms. Of course wewant good weather for theevent, but the 32 degrees wehad at times last year was a bitmuch. We are laying on coolingfor the cider, so it should reachyou in good condition. There

will be a mix of local ciders, some new to Derby, along withplenty of old favourites, mainlyfrom the West Country.

One cider new to the festival is

Oak eld Farm, at StanleyCommon, the site of theNutbrook Brewery. This is a verysmall operation using fruitpicked locally and pressed at Three Cats Cider (also availableat the festival) from Morley. Itpromises to be a pale and clear, medium cider. Why not call inthe farm shop (open Saturdays)if you are passing. Also local isSpencer & Haspels Shock, hopefully back to 8.4% thisyear. It is made at Ockbrook, but you will nd it on sale at MrGrundys Tavern, AshbourneRoad, Derby. One more fairlylocal cider is Charnwood, madeby a park ranger adjoiningBradgate Park, Leicestershire.More local fruit and it shouldbe a crisp, medium dry cider.

From further north, and insecond place at Reading wehave Dove Syke Ribble ValleyGold, from Clitheroe,

Lancashire. This is a clear, golden cider with a long, satisfying aftertaste. For thoseof you who like something a

    little sweeter we have two

classics from Hecks, StreetSomerset, notably Port Wine of Glastonbury cider and BlakeneyRed perry, both single varietydrinks. Just a few more to whetyour appetite; BiddendenKentish Strong, Gwynt y DdraigBlack Dragon, Tatchers CheddarValley, Winkleigh Sams, and inthe perries Impaired Vision andGwatkins Malvern Hills. Enoughfor now, the festival website

MAD : CAMRAsNewest BranchIf you didnt know this by now, heres a refresher: CAMRA, theCampaign for Real Ale is anindependent, voluntaryorganisation campaigning for realale, community pubs, andconsumer rights. The organisationwas founded in March 1971 byMichael Hardman, Bill Mellor,Graham Lees and Jim Makin, fourlikely lads from the north-west whowere on a beer-infused holiday inCounty Kerry. Krugers Bar inDunquin on Kerrys jagged coast isrecognized as the official

birthplace of CAMRA, because itwas in that particular watering holethat they collectively decidedsomething had to be said (anddone) about the poor quality andsparse choice in the British beermarket. All four freely admit theknew nothing about how beerwas made, and had no clue as towhy the stuff they were beingforced to drink was so dreadful. We found out about beer from all

these people who joined us, saysHardman.

At the rst AGM (at the Rose Inn,Nuneaton, 1972) the membershipconsisted of the four founders and afew friends, but interest in CAMRAand its objectives spread rapidly.Hardman is quoted as saying Wewere overwhelmed by the numberof people behind us we grew toalmost 2000 members in that rstyear, by 1973. The year after that, wegrew into ve gures .. Today ,CAMRA has over 160,000 membersacross the world, and is of ten citedas the most successful consumercampaign in Europe.

    In November 1975 Derby CAMRA

held a meeting at the Boathouse onDale Road, Matlock to sound outsupport for a Matlock Area Sub-committee, and as a result TrevorPeacock became Matlock Area Sub-committee Chairman. TheChester eld branch of CAMRA wasfounded in 1977 with the rstmeeting at the Furnace Inn,Goytside, (now the Unicorn Tavern). Their allotted area was large, andthey were granted the Matlock area

from Derby branch. About eightyears ago, Matlock members beganholding their own group meetings, with the focus away for the bright

and busy lights of the metropolisthat is Chester eld, concentratingmore locally on the town of Matlock and its surrounding dales. The groupbecame known as the MAD(Matlock and Dales) sub-branch, andslowly grew in active membershipnumbers, to a point where itsmeetings were attractingconsiderably larger attendance thanthose of many fully edgedbranches.

By last year MAD had the rstMatlock CAMRA Beer Festival behindthem, a steady ow of new membersturning up to sub-branch meetings,a campaigning record of considerable note, excellentrelationships with licensees the area, their own campaigning strategies, their own local pubs in the GoodBeer Guide, and an impressive list of social engagements both past andfuture. Not bad for a sub branch. Itwas therefore inevitable that thegroup were to apply for fullbranch status, so after a voteon Thursday 16th January 2014in the AGM at the MoCa bar onDale Road, the national

Campaign for Real Ale receivednoti cation that a new branchwished to join the cause. It wasmet with applause.

So today, Matlock and Dales isan independent Branch of

CAMRA, 43 years late to the table, but supporting the same aimsdreamed up by those four sterlingchaps all those years ago on a boozy

holiday in the Irish republic. SoSlinte! as they say over there - orCheers! as we do in Matlock.

Matlock Beer Festival II : Justwhen you thought it was safe!

August 8th and 9th 2014 will see thesecond Matlock and Dales BeerFestival being held at the Fishpondin Matlock Bath. DearToper...Consider! Dear Toper, a pleasant evening spent in thecompany of a few friends in some local hostelry. Presently,as the evening draws toward its inevitable close, we glanceacross at the wall clock above the counter half an hour togo until closing time plenty of time for one last pint or

perhaps two? Our pints having been purchased, we returnto our chosen table; there to resume our ale-fueledconversation. Suddenly, a member of bar staff appearsbefore us, brandishingin one hand a cloth, and in the other anaerosol can containingcustomer repellant sorry: polish. As shestands there loominglarge, we are left indoubt whatsoever, thatshe wishes to clean ourtable. There are of course, several othertables in the room, allof them unoccupied(we appear to be theonly remainingcustomers) but she hasdecided to clean ours

rst. Dutifully, we liftup our pints and beer mats (in the case of the ladies, theirhandbags, car keys, mobile phones and goodness knowswhat else?) and she lets loose half a can of spray polish,

before giving the table a half-hearted swipe with hermanky cloth. She then slouches off and pays some less thancursory attention to the rest of the tables.Putting her can of customer repellant aside, she now places allof the unoccupied stools, upside down, on the settles, so thatwe feel as if were behind bars; she does this with many a pout, frown and grimace, and so, without uttering a word, makes itplain that she would dearly like to do the same with thefurniture that we are occupying.

Having so far failed to dislodge us, she now produces a mopand bucket from somewhere, and starts to clean the oor not

behind the counter, where most of theevenings spillages haveoccurred (an area thatlooks as if it has not had amop dragged across it inliving memory) no: shedecides to sulkily slopher soggy weapon aboutin the vicinity of ourtable!

Finally, she hassucceeded in driving usform our table, and wedecide to nish off ourpints whilst leaning onthe counter, promptingher to abandon hermopping up exercise, as

suddenly and as inexplicably as she began it, and instead sheremoves the bar towels (causing us to lift up our pints again)and wipes the counter top down, needless to say, after giving it(and us) a liberal spraying of customer repellant.

Having had the conviviality of the evening ruined, we decide tosup up and leave, noting which a chill smile of satisfactioncreases her sour lips, for now the slattern can lock up and dowhat shes been itching to do all evening: that being to gohome, switch on the T.V. and catch up on all of those mind-rotting soaps that she so adores! Consider that, Dear Toper!
