    WHATS INSIDE

Student SpotlightOn a scale of one to ten, Id give her anegative seven, says Bill, a resident at PearlManor in Manchester. Im just kidding.Shes great! You owe me one Kathy, headds with a wink and a smile. Many of the

residents would agree with Bill, KatherineWooffhas become a welcomed face at PearlManors activity nights.

Wooff, a senior in the psychology programat UNH Manchester and a Salem High

School graduate, was introduced to PearlManor while taking an adult psychologycourse in spring 2011 with Professor AlisonPaglia. She enjoyed the experience so muchthat she stayed on as a volunteer through

the summer and interned this fall. Hermain project during the fall was to create aWorld War II exhibit featuring the personalstories and photos of residents who servedin WWII.

The WWII exhibit is one of the best weveever had here. The residents really enjoyit, says BJ Roy, social events coordinatorat Pearl Manor. Wooff spent countlesshours interviewing each of the 16 residentswho served in the war and scanning theirphotographs. Among which is Trudy Greig,a nurse who served in the war, and her

beloved wool coat liner. The army greencoat is speckled with now faded company

patches Greig collectedfrom soldiers whoasked her to pray forthem during the war.

Wooff was honored tohave the opportunityto learn about so manygreat veterans. Shesaid, One of the bestparts has been to seethe discussion amongstthe residentsIts beena lot of fun, I love it!She graduates fromUNH Manchester in May 2012.

Pearl Manor is recruiting interns andvolunteers for the spring semester.

    PALS Needed

Written by Erin Clark, English major

Being a Peer Assistant Leader (PAL) isbeneficial to anyone who would like to

increase their leadership skills. Not only doPALs help first year students transition intocollege, but they also become more involvedon campus, add useful tools and skills totheir resume, and gain a greater sense ofself-awareness.

I became a PAL because I remember being afreshman. I was excited to finally be in college, but I had no idea what I wanted to do or how

to do it. College, even on as small of a campusas UNH Manchester, seemed intimidatingand anxiety producing. My PAL helped meto overcome the obstacles and gave me theresources I needed to help me to get off on theright foot.

Two years and four successful semesterslater, when I was recommended to becomea PAL, I jumped at the opportunity. Sinceaccepting the position, I feel that I havecontributed to the UNH Manchestercommunity, and have helped students whowere in the same position that I once was.

I have gained an enormous amount ofleadership skills that can help in any career, and I have learned a lot about myself andmy capabilities.

If you have a similar story, or even a totallydifferent experience, and would like tohelp students in any way you can, considerbecoming a PAL. For more information, check out the PAL website, the first yearexperience bulletin board, or email me [email protected].
