COLLEGE STuDENTS LEARN MORE FROM FREQuENT QuIZZESStudying for midterms and finals can be a pain. These tests can be stressful, and sometimes it’s even worse when the professor decides to make the tests cumulative - who really remembers everything they learned from the beginning of the semester to now? Perhaps, if the professor quizzed the students frequently, they wouldn’t be so freaked out. Well, a new study, which appeared in the PLoS One journal, suggests that frequent quizzes are in fact more effective than just a midterm or final because they help the students learn more. The New York Times reported that this study found that quizzing students at the beginning of each class increases both attendance and overall performance. For example, in the study, 901 students in a Psych 301 class took a quiz on their computers every time they came to class. Instead of a final exam, the students’ grades were based on cumulative quiz scores. By the end of the course, the study revealed that these students outperformed a previous Psych class that used midterm exams, and they received slightly higher grades than the previous class.

FREE TEXTbOOkS FOR COLLEGE STuDENTS bECOME POSSIbILITYCongress is considering newly introduced legislature that could make college textbooks free. Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Al Franken (D-Minn.) created a bill, called the “Affordable College Textbook Act”, that would allow colleges and universities to “create and expand the use of textbooks that can be made available online.” This grant program would make expensive textbooks a thing of the past, as students would have access to

digital textbooks instead of being forced to buy the overpriced books at the campus bookstore. A grant program like this could work. For example, the University of California, Davis received a $250,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and achieved great results. The University of Illinois had a $150,000 grant that proved to be quite successful; the university was able to “develop a book that’s available to anyone for free and can be updated when new information becomes available,” according to the Huffington Post.

SMOkING bAN TO EXPAND TO MORE CALIFORNIA STATE uNIvERSITIES?University of California (UC) schools have taken the necessary steps to ban smoking on all of the campuses, and it looks like the California State University (CSU) system might follow suite. California State University, Fullerton was the first CSU to ban smoking on its campus in August; however, people are still allowed to use chewing tobacco on campus. Students at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) want to ban cigarettes and tobacco. Students and administrators at CSUS have been in talks about implementing a smoking ban for years, but a current fall public relations course is working on a campaign that is striving to get the job done by 2015. Adopting the name “Hornets for a Healthy Hive,” the students have launched a campaign that includes surveys, attending town hall meetings and creating a heavy online social-media presence. Now, CSUS President Alexander Gonzalez is considering a ban that would prohibit smoking, tobacco chewing and the use of electronic cigarettes on school property. Hornets for a Healthy Hive hope the ban will go

into effect by Jan. 1, 2015.

HATE CRIMES AT SAN JOSE STATE uNIvERSITYFour white students at San Jose State University harassed and bullied their African American roommate up until recently. Since then, those three roommates, plus an additional offender, have been suspended and “face misdemeanor hate-crime and battery charges,” according to the Los Angeles Times. The roommates allegedly forced the African American student to wear a bike lock around his neck and called him “three-fifths,” referencing the “three-fifths” part of the Constitution during times of slavery that stated slaves were only three-fifths of a person. The African American student’s parents discovered this racist bullying when they saw a racial slur on the white board of his dorm room. The university’s president said in campus letter that the school failed to adequately intervene or impose sanctions and will soon name an independent expert to look into the case.

CALIFORNIANS SEE DECREASE IN HATE CRIMES Ironically enough, given the recent hate crime incident at SJSU, reports of hate crimes in California have decreased nearly 13 percent in 2012, according to Attorney General Kamala D. Harris’ announcement. Hate crimes have decreased from 1,060 in 2011 to 930 in 2012. Race-based hate crimes went down slightly more than 10 percent, and sexual-orientation hate crimes went down 3.7 percent for the year. Hate crimes involving religious bias decreased by a whopping 27.9 percent. In nearly 10 years, hate crimes reports have went down by 37.6 percent, according to LA Weekly.

FINALS SuRvIvAL GuIDEBY KAI CHAN

Renee JoneS SChneideR/MinneAPoLiS STAR TRiBune/MCT

Tips on how to study and finish this semester with a bang.

wITH FINALS APPROACHING SOON, it can get pretty overwhelming, especially with the holidays coming up. Thus, we’ve made a Finals Survival Guide to help you prepare for your exams.

First we start with locations. You need to find a place where you can completely focus. For me, I need to get away from campus. This way, I avoid bumping into friends, classmates or professors and getting stuck in too-long conversations with them. But wherever you study, the location must meet certain criteria: free Wi-Fi, drinks, snacks and soft background noises. Cafés are great places to get away and study.

PERFECT CAFéS FOR STuDYING:BrewWell: For coffee and tea lovers, this place has a variety of drink options. It also has pastries and snacks to keep your tummy full while you study. The ambience is very modern, and the music is low. Don’t worry about trying to find a place to sit and charge your laptop; you can find sockets under the tables. Caffe Bene: There are two floors in this café; the second floor is where you want to study. It’s quieter and has more seats. Caffe Bene has a good selection of desserts such as macaroons, ice cream and waffles to satisfy your sweet tooth. Also, it stays open until midnight, which is a bonus. Brick and Scones: This little spot has a patio and two floors if you prefer to study outside or indoors. You can expect to see several people studying or doing their work. In addition to scones and pastries, there are sandwiches if you want something more filling.

Some chain cafés like Starbucks work great if you can avoid the rush hours. Another option is go to a bookstore with a café, such as Barnes & Noble.

EAT bRAIN FOOD:Food is obviously important, and no one likes to study while hungry. However, studies show specific foods can help boost brain activity. Those brain snacks include…Blueberries: They are high in antioxidants. It is recommended to have a cup each day, so mix it up with popcorn, or add them to your cereal at breakfast.Avocado: This green fruit is a healthy fat. Because of their

monounsaturated fat, avocados keep the blood flow going. Healthy blood flow leads to a healthy brain. One of my favorite dishes is toasted tortilla with chicken and avocado sandwiched between gooey cheeses.Apples: Don’t think their main purpose is to keep the dentist away. Studies show apples skin has a powerful antioxidant, quercetin, that helps boost memory function.Nuts: They are not only high in fatty acids, but they have a good amount of iron and can bring more oxygen to the brain. Walnuts are said to resemble a brain and are considered THE brain snack.Dark chocolate: This is not the chocolate you find in your Halloween bucket. Just remember: the darker the chocolate, the better the benefits. It helps with memory function, increases oxygen flow, and increases awareness and clarity.

The most important thing is to look for nutrition that will maximize brain functions. Look for foods with iron, omega-3 fatty acids, folic acids and foods that are rich in Vitamin E and B6. They all help with memory and brain activity.

SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX:With location and brain foods in check, we have to keep our social media intake under control! It’s easy to get stuck on a Facebook page for hours or scrolling through Twitter or Instagram. If you’re a social-media addict, try these apps. SelfControl: This is a free Mac application that restricts your access to websites, mail servers or anything on the website for a set time period. Once you set it, there will be no cheating! You will not be able to gain access even if you reboot your laptop or delete the app.Cold Turkey: This is a similar app to SelfControl, but it’s for Windows. Cold Turkey will block websites and programs, and you can’t cheat. Freedom: This app works for both Mac and Windows computers. For $10, it will block the Internet. If you really need to cheat, just reboot, and you can gain access. Anti-Social: If your studying requires researching online, use this app. It works on both Mac and Windows for $15 and blocks only distracting sites. If there are other sites that distract you, add them to the list and set the timer.

EXPLORE L.A.: HOLIDAYS

wE MAY NOT HAvE A TRADITIONAL wHITE CHRISTMAS in Los Angeles, but we do have the twinkling magic that gets the job done.

Citadel Outlets 100 Citadel Drive, Suite 480, Los AngelesThese outlets don’t just have a beautiful Christmas tree up; it’s actually the tallest tree in the world, standing at 115 feet tall. Also, the outlet features the world’s biggest installation: a bright red bow that can be seen from the freeway. Stop by for holiday shopping and marvel at the displays, which are up until the end of December.

The Grove 189 The Grove Drive, Los AngelesThis place is gorgeous all year round. During the holidays, look up and you’ll see the sky lit up with strings of white lights. Santa Claus is riding on the sled with his reindeers prancing away just above your head. Take a walk, and watch the water fountain shoot waves and spin water in the air as holiday music plays in the background. Wait patiently, and there will be snowfalls at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. nightly. The holiday atmosphere is ongoing until Dec. 24.

Rodeo DriveRodeo Drive, Beverly HillsFor the first time, Beverly Hill’s Rodeo Drive lights up with nearly 150,000 lights. The trees are fully wrapped in lights, and giant stars hang above the street. It is a sight to see. Even the stores on the block will decorate elaborately with stars, crystals and bows along with the glistening lights. Dress warm and stroll along with a group of friends; the lights will illuminate nightly until the end of December.

Yolanda Street7300 Yolanda Avenue, ResedaFor a romantic evening, dress warm and walk through the light tunnel on Yolanda Street in Reseda. It is just row of arches sparkling with lights - no crazy decorations or competitions between houses. Instead, everyone works together trying to extend the “tunnel” longer and longer. At the end, be sure to stop and sign the photo album at the end of the block. The lights start from dark and end at midnight nightly, lasting until the first week of January.

2nd Annual Venice Sign Intersection of Windward & Pacific avenues at Venice BeachIf snow is not your scene and you want to be near the beach, Venice is the place to go. The 2nd Annual Venice Sign will kick off on Dec.

6. Its iconic sign will alternate between red and green to fit into the holiday spirit. The whole event is also to raise money for LED bulbs. LED bulbs would allow the city to change the sign’s colors for different holidays to come. Don’t just show up for the festival; bring a new unwrapped toy and drop i t off in the collection box for the toy drive.

Candy Cane Lane Intersection of Lubao Avenue & Oxnard Street in Woodland HillsGrab a group of friends, and carpool together down to Candy Cane Lane in Woodland Hills. This 8-square block residential street will have houses decorated with lights and Santa Claus, Grinch, reindeer and snowman inflatable decorations. Many of the homeowners voluntarily decorate and usually try to top their neighbors. If you’re lucky, you can find Santa Claus and take a picture with him or find his elves scurrying through the neighborhood. The decorations light up nightly from dark to 10 p.m. on weekdays and to 11 p.m. on weekends. Drive around, and don’t miss a house.

Sleepy Hollow Christmas Light ExtravaganzaRobert Road, Pacific Coast Highway and cross streets, TorranceThere’s another neighborhood, this one in Torrance, that also decks out in holiday spirit! The Sleepy Hollow Christmas Light Extravaganza sounds like a television show, but the extravaganza itself is a winter wonderland. The neighbors work together to go beyond the traditional means, bringing fun holiday cheer for everyone. If you’re lucky, Jack Skeleton dressed up as “Sandy Claws” might be hanging around. It’s a great drive, but if you can park and walk along the block, it’s even more spectacular. The extravaganza will be up until Jan. 1.

Christmas Tree LaneSanta Rosa Avenue, between Woodbury Avenue and Altadena Drive in AltadenaChristmas Tree Lane in Altadena is the oldest large-scale lightings in the world, and it is a sight to see while driving. The Christmas Tree Lane Association made sure this tradition will continue by putting up lights on rows of deodar trees. The deodar trees were planted originally as a driveway for a mansion in 1885, but now they are being used to light up the street. This spectacle is a mile long, and the trees are decorated with 10,000 lights, which makes for a beautiful drive. The lights are expected to stay until the end of January.

BY KAI CHANGET YOUR DORM ROOM IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

Bring the holiday cheer to your dorm room by decorating your place with your own sparkling creations.

String lights are cheap and can be found everywhere. Buy frosted lights that give off soft light; it will seem as if snow is floating in the air. Or go for colorful bulbs, and make your room a festive place to have a party. Many stores offer winter-themed lights such as snowflakes, icicles and little gingerbread cookies.

You can also grab a miniature tree and set it on a nightstand or desk if you have room.

Whatever you choose to do, have a delightful holidays season, and share the cheers with your family and friends.

MUSIC

IN HIS NEw ALbuM, Make a Move, top-selling artist Gavin DeGraw makes a bold move and gives up control in the name of art.

On this album, which released on Oct. 15 via RCA, DeGraw takes his soul/folk/rock style to the next level by collaborating with other writers in an effort to bring forth an exploratory sound that away breaks from his signature singer-songwriter style.

“My last album was my first attempt at co-writing,” he said. “I had someone write a couple of songs with me, and I wrote the rest alone. All the albums prior to that I wrote alone.”

DeGraw admitted that sharing writing duties on Make a Move was a risky and bold choice. “There’s always a possibility of loosing your sound when collaborating with other artists, but what you want for yourself as an artist is to have a strong enough identity artistically that people will always be able to hear you,” he said.

Sharing his creative space with other writers pushed the hit maker to test his musical skills, allowing him to become vulnerable while embracing other artists’ perspectives of his work.

“It’s nice to open up those channels [of information and creativity]. The co-writing thing has really broadened my experience as an artist and as a writer. I feel more a part of a community than I ever have. I’m tapping into a group of people that do some of the similar things that I do,” said the artist who broke into mainstream music with his debut album Chariot a decade ago.

Listening to Make a Move, it’s clear DeGraw was craving a change in direction, and he seems unapologetic about the outcome.

“At the end of the day, it’s just art, and art is about experimentation,” said Degraw. “...hearing how others hear things...was one of the biggest things I looked forward to doing. That’s what makes this album interesting.“

According to the singer, Make a Move was about pushing the limits and facing what a lot of artists fear: letting others in and revamping his style.

“A song like ‘Leading Man’ that I wrote with Kevin Rudolf [Justin Timberlake, The Black Eyed Peas, Nelly Furtado] has this really cocky approach. It’s kind of over-confident, but I find it very entertaining,” said DeGraw. “It’s not a song designed to be

intimate; it doesn’t have the typical singer-songwriter perspective. I think 10 years ago, the category ‘singer-songwriter’ never would have accepted a song like that, but that’s precisely why I wanted to do it.“

This project also reunited DeGraw with multi-platinum producer Butch Walker (Fall Out Boy, Taylor Swift, P!nk), Grammy award-winning producer and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder, and writer Busbee (Jason Aldean, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk).

“’Who’s Gonna Save Us,’ which I wrote with Busbee, reminds me of my first album a lot because there’s a certain innocence about the vocals and lyrics. At the same time, it’s also reminiscent of ‘Not Over You’ as far as the production elements. Ultimately for me, it sounded like ‘Not Over You’ on steroids,” DeGraw said with excitement.

He continued, “Having moments like that on this album, which are so crazy and stylistically opposed, is what keeps it interesting to me.“

However, Make a Move isn’t all about musical experimentation; it’s also about healing, acceptance and “making moves,” so to speak.

In 2011, DeGraw was hospitalized after being attacked in New York City. He suffered a broken nose, a concussion, fractures and lacerations to his face.

“I think every life experience can find its way into what you’re doing,” revealed DeGraw in a serious tone. “I’m not sure exactly how that experience shaped me as an artist, but I know it made its way into my music for sure.”

He continued, “When I think about the lyric like in ‘Leading Man’ that says: ‘All you suckers get the back of my hand,’ of course in the back of my mind I’m envisioning people like those douche bags who pick a fight with somebody by themselves, you know?”

Regardless of whether his fans or critics adore him or reject his latest effort, DeGraw is content with having created an album that is about collaborating, experimenting and utilizing painful experiences to push him forward.

“You can’t keep it in, but it’s my job as an artist to let it become part of my craft.”

Gavin DeGraw will be performing at the City National Grove of Anaheim on April 29, 2014. His album Make a Move is currently available.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF MOvIES about the horrors of war, but there aren’t nearly as many movies about the horrors our veterans face when they come back home.

Out of the Furnace is fashioned with the same gritty realism that 1978’s Coming Home, 1989’s Born on the Fourth of July and 2009’s The Messengers portrayed. While violence is used as a shock factor in many movies, the realistic violent undertones that permeate Out of the Furnace mirror the everyday violence many of us are lucky not to experience.

The film centers on Russell Baze (Christian Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) who were born and raised in Braddock, Pa., a small town in the crumbling Rust Belt whose economy revolves around the local steel mill. Russell follows the family tradition of working in the mill, while Rodney enlists in the Army, hoping to find a better life outside of Braddock.

After four tours of duty in Iraq, Rodney returns to the recession-weary town that offers even fewer options than before he left. When a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, Rodney tries to make ends meet by gambling and bare-knuckle boxing. Drowning in debt, he soon finds himself enmeshed with sociopath Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson), the leader of a ruthless backwoods crime ring in New Jersey’s Ramapo Mountains.

The opening scene sets the tone for the film when the audience is introduced to Harlan and his sociopathic behavior right away.

“The entire picture is an examination of the nature of violence in a society in which men have to solve their own problems,” director and co-writer Scott Cooper explained. “We see that today in Syria, in Cairo, in South Los Angeles. We see it in Chicago and Detroit. I thought, if I’m going to examine violence in this way, then I should open the movie in a very naturalistically violent way, a way that I hadn’t seen in a film before.”

If you happened to watch Affleck on a recent episode

of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” his passion for the plight of veterans is obvious.

“Many soldiers return from their deployment and have to start over,” said Affleck. “They have been trained to do a very specific job and entrusted with quite a bit of responsibility and power. Suddenly they are back home, and transitioning to civilian life is very challenging. The economy is in really rough shape. People don’t have jobs; some folks don’t have homes. [Rodney] is trying to find a way to get by day to day, pay the bills and restart his life.”

The movie begins in 2008, when many in the military had their tours of duty extended multiple times without their consent. “It’s a reflection of an unfortunate reality in America,” said co-producer Michael Ireland. “[Rodney’s] life is defined by his obligations to the military. He gets back home to find there had been a huge decline in the economy. So many young people have returned from military service to find there’s not much for them here. Rodney doesn’t really have anywhere to turn.”

Rodney channels his pent-up fury and depression into the informal and vicious boxing matches taking place in the area, participating in brutal bare-knuckle brawls on which large

amounts of money are wagered. “The role had very specific physical demands that were challenging for me,” said Affleck. “I’m not and never have been a fighter. Training to find the right balance between getting in shape for the fights and dealing with the reality that he has been damaged physically from the war was arduous work.”

Though Harrelson’s character is much different than Affleck’s, their characters’ lives revolve around violence. Rodney has experienced the violence of war and now channels his anger (and possible PTSD) into the violence of boxing. Harlan (is a grown-up schoolyard bully who still uses violence to terrorize and control those around him.

When Harrelson first read the screenplay, he found nothing to like about the character—and that’s part of what he found so intriguing. “It is pretty dark material, and [Harlan] DeGroat is the most extreme character I’ve ever played,” said the actor. “Getting into character took a lot of imagination for me. I wrote journal entries from the character’s perspective to try to get into the mindset.”

The violent climactic scene is one of those “what would you do?” scenarios. If you had the opportunity to take revenge on someone who hurt your family, what would you do? Would you take the high road? Or would you surrender to your basic instincts? Those are questions that can never really be answered until you’re in that situation.

Bale explained, “…The film is about brotherly love, as well as love for where you’re brought up and what you have to do when you lose that. Russell’s plan for his life has been falling away bit by bit. He’s handled enormous responsibility within his family since he was very young. Now, he’s being forced to acknowledge what’s really important to him.”

Growing up, most of us are told that violence is never the answer. However, Out of the Furnace asks the profound question: what if violence is the only answer?

Out of the Furnace releases in theaters Dec. 6, 2013.

15Campus Circle - December 5-18, 2013www.CampusCircle.com

EvERY YEAR AROuND THIS TIME, film fanatics get excited. Why? Because the holidays seem to be the time when studios release the good stuff, the Oscar-potential films that will have us talking nonstop until spring.

So far this year, we have already seen a few movies that are definitely Oscar contenders: 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, Captain Phillips, Fruitvale Station and more.

Here are the holiday films we think will nab some Oscar nods.

Inside Llewyn DavisReleases: Dec. 6Starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund and Justin Timberlake, this film is definitely generating a lot of Oscar buzz, especially for Isaac’s lead role as Llewyn Davis. Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed this film, which is about a young folk singer (Isaac) who encounters insurmountable obstacles as he struggles to make it as a musician in 1961 New York.

The Hobbit: Desolation of SmaugReleases: Dec. 13Its predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, nabbed Oscar nominations in visual effects, production design, and hair and makeup, so we’re betting Desolation of Smug will garner the same recognition, perhaps even walking away with an Oscar. Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the dwarves return to save the world from grave danger and reclaim the dwarves’ homeland from Smaug, the dragon.

Saving Mr. BanksReleases: Dec. 13This film might earn Disney a few Oscar nominations, and possibly wins. Saving Mr. Banks chronicles the turbulent relationship between Walt Disney and P.L. Travers, the latter being the author of book-now-turned-Disney-musical-hit, Mary Poppins. Not many people know the story of how Mary Poppins made it to the big screen, but apparently Travers was very reluctant on letting Disney adapt her book about the magical

nanny. Starring Tom Hanks as Disney and Emma Thompson as Travers, Saving Mr. Banks is a movie about, well, movies. This John Lee Hancock film could be a best picture contender. Also, Hanks and Thompson have both won two Academy Awards each – we won’t be surprised if they’re up for solo nominations in 2014.

American HustleReleases: Dec. 18Dubbed this year’s Silver Linings Playbook by the Guardian, American Hustle will probably be a contender in best picture, best actor for Christian Bale and even best director (David O. Russell also directed Silver Linings Playbook). In the film, Bale is a con artist working for the FBI. Jennifer Lawrence (who won last year’s Oscar for her role in SLP) is his wife, and Amy Adams is his lover. Russell reunites Lawrence with fellow SLP stars Bradley Cooper, who plays an agent, and Robert De Niro. In this ‘70s era film, Cooper enlists Bale and Adams to take down a New Jersey mayor (Jeremy Renner) in a bribery scam.

The PastReleases: Dec. 20This foreign language film from Iran won Bérénice Béjo the best actress award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, and director Asghar Farhadi gave Iran its first Oscar in 2011 with A Separation – it’s possible The Past might bring home the second. Farhadi’s The Past centers on an estranged couple that has been in a four-year separation. Ahmad (Ali Mosaffa) returns to Paris from Tehran upon the request of his French wife, Marie (Béjo). They want to finalize their divorce so she can marry her new boyfriend. However, Ahmad realizes Marie has a conflicting relationship with teen daughter, Lucie (Pauline Burlet). Ahmad tries to improve their relationship, but a secret from their past unveils, and the revelations affect every character.

The Wolf of Wall StreetReleases: Dec. 25Finally this film has a release date! Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew

McConaughey, Johah Hill and Jean Dujardin (who won an Oscar for 2011’s The Artist), is about a New York stockbroker (DiCaprio) who succumbs to American greed and a life of corruption. As a former Academy Award nominee but not yet a winner, DiCaprio seems to take a little stab at comedy, a genre he’s never really delved into before. He might be an Oscar contender for best actor…but we’ll see.

The Secret Life of Walter MittyReleases: Dec. 25Based on the short story by James Thurber, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has people going back and forth on whether or not the film will score any Oscar nods. It could be a best picture contender, but it will have extremely tough competition. Ben Stiller directs and stars as Walter Mitty in this film that contains romance, fantasy, comedy, adventure and drama. Stiller’s character doesn’t seem to have that interesting of a life; however, he has moments when he “zones out.” When he’s lost in his fantasies, Walter is jumping into building windows, hopping onto moving helicopters and bravely diving into the ocean; he’s the ultimate hero.

August: Osage CountyReleases: Dec. 25This Weinstein Co. film has “Oscar winner” written all over it. Starring three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep, 2001 Oscar winner Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Abigail Brelsin, Benedict Cumberbatch and Juliette Lewis, August: Osage County has a stellar cast. Streep and Roberts have been pegged as big Oscar contenders, with Roberts recently winning the Spotlight Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival. We wouldn’t be surprised if the movie also nabbed a best picture and best adapted screenplay nomination. In the film, dysfunctional Violet (Streep) suffers from cancer and calls for her three daughters to return to the Midwest home they grew up in. What happens next involves drama, awkwardness and tragedy.

ONE LOOk AT GROCERY STORE SHELvES, beauty counters and drugstore aisles, and you’d think there was an open decla-ration of war against wheat.

Gluten-free labels are taking over everything from skin care products to nail polish to pizza menus. And, while the more than 2 million Americans who have celiac disease need to stay away from gluten, plenty of others are choosing to avoid the protein found in wheat, rye, barley and other grains for all sorts of other reasons, including weight loss, allergies, sensitivi-ties and to avoid skin reactions.

Whether you’re looking for a tasty treat, a natural lipstick or a hair dye without gluten on the label, there’s likely an option out there. Here are 10 to try without feeling one bit deprived. — Red Apple Lipstick: Not only is this stuff gluten-free and non-toxic, it’s moisturizing, never tested on animals and comes in a slew of cute colors. Mwah! Redapplelipstick.com.— California Pizza Kitchen: Four faves from the regular menu, Original BBQ Chicken Pizza, Pepperoni, Mushroom Pepperoni Sausage and Margherita, are all now available gluten-free. Cpk.com.— Piggy Paint nail polish: Great for kids (and moms, too), this non-toxic, odorless polish is not only gluten-free, but durable, hypoallergenic and biodegradable. Yep, it’s mani/pedi time. Piggypaint.com.

— Alternavites: If you’re looking for a gluten-free multi-vita-min, but hate taking pills, check out this powder that boasts 23 vitamins and minerals and can be sprinkled on your (non-gluten) food. Alternavites.com.— Popcorn, Indiana Drizzlecorn: If we were forced to choose just one gluten-free food to live on, this would be it. For a limit-ed time, this gluten-free, all natural, non-GMO popcorn comes in Dark Fudge Chocolate Chip, Drizzled Black & White Kettle-corn, Drizzled Cinnamon Sugar Kettlecorn, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Dark Fudge Peppermint Kettlecorn. We pounced on each bag like our lives depended on it. Buy as many bags as you can get your hands on. Seriously – it really is that good. www.popcornindiana.com.— 100% Pure Body Wash: Start your day off gluten-free by us-ing this 100 percent natural product in the shower. With scents like Honey Almond, Pomegranate and Strawberry Lemonade, your skin will feel silky without all those detergents, chemical preservatives and artificial fragrances. 100percentpure.com.— Skout Organic Trail Bars: Whether you’re on-the-go, need to pack the kids a snack or just want a yummy treat, we have yet to find a flavor of these non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy- and soy-free, vegan and Kosher bars we haven’t devoured. Based in Portland, Ore., Skout comes in Blueberry Almond, Apple Cin-namon, Cherry Vanilla, Chocolate Coconut and Chocolate Pea-

nut Butter. We keep a spare bar in our desk drawer, purse and glove compartment just in case. You should probably do the same. www.skoutnatural.com.— Kiss My Face Kids Sunscreen: It’s OK to use this SPF 30 sunscreen on yourself, too. With zero nanoparticles, phthalates, fragrances, artificial colors or animal ingredients, it’s also glu-ten-free, biodegradable and not tested on animals. Kissmyface.com.— Splat Hair Color: Taking a cue from pop stars like Demi Lovato, Rihanna, Kesha and Katy Perry and dying your locks some crazy neon color? If you prefer that hue to be gluten-free, this is your brand. Whether you choose Lusty Lavender, Pink Fetish, Blue Envy or another wild shade, you’ll be covered and your friends will be able to spot you from miles away. Splathair-color.com.— Margaritas are Gluten Free T-shirt: Wanna have a little light-hearted fun with the gluten-free craze? Pick up this cute shirt and hoist a tequila cocktail. Cheers! Zazzle.com.
