CAMPION AWARD FOR SERVICE

The George B. Sweeney Endowed Campion Award for Service recognizes students who are committed tobecoming leaders in social action through the lens of faith. Established in 1996 by George B. Sweeney, thisfund honors John Carroll University students who have made significant contributions to the community, bothon campus and in our larger community. The award involves a one-year, $1,000 award to educate promisingstudent leaders in social policy analysis in a faith perspective; the Center for Service and Social Action alsoadministers up to $500 in additional funds to each Campion Award recipient for an approved campus-basedservice project proposal. Catherine Distelrath, Jillian Dunn and Jeffrey Hatgas have been selected as the2011 recipients of this prestigious award.

Junior Catherine Distelrath has been involved with tutoring local elementary andmiddle school students at various schools, has tutored adult students in the GEDprogram at the Thea Bowman Center, and has worked extensively at the HeightsEmergency Food Center, where she now sits on the Executive Board. Distelrath is astudent leader for the Center for Service and Social Action, is a member of the

women's club basketball team, and also coaches girls' basketball at BeachwoodMiddle School. Distelrath is majoring in psychology and sociology, and plans to do ayear of service after college. She plans to pursue a master's degree in social work.

Sophomore Jillian Dunn is from Erie, PA. As an Arrupe Scholar, Dunn entered JohnCarroll University dedicated to her academics and the Jesuit mission being "a womanfor others." Dunn is an editor for the Carroll News newspaper, President of the LabreProject that feeds Cleveland's homeless on a weekly basis, an Honor's student, and amember of the Student Speaker's Bureau. She participated and is currently leadingthe New Orleans Immersion Experience, is involved in l iturgical ministries, and hasbeen on the Dean's List twice. Dunn also works as an intern for the Arrupe Scholarsprogram, and is a student leader for the Center for Service and Social Action. Dunn ismajoring in religious studies, with minors in Catholic studies and communication,and plans to attend JCU to earn a master's degree in religious studies.

Junior Jeffrey Hatgas, an Arrupe Scholar, has participated in the Chicago Immersion

Experience and has also served as a mentor with the Seeds of Hope program. Forthe past two years, he has worked with a team of students to create and lead theCleveland Urban Plunge, focusing on issues of poverty and homelessness. Hatgas isin the Honor's Program and is majoring in psychology.

It is with pleasure and pride that we commend Catherine, Jillian, and Jeffrey for their efforts and for theirdemonstrated commitment to social justice, and we invite the entire JCU community to join us at theFebruary 2nd Men's Basketball game against Heidelberg, during which we will honor this year's CampionAward winners at half time.
