“It’s fortunate no one was injured or killed.”

According to Coast Guard spokesman Dan Bates, they received report at 4:20 a.m. Mon-day of a fishing boat that had run aground just south of Kelsey Bay in Johnstone Strait.

The 58-foot American vessel Arline was head-ing south when it ran aground and the two remaining crew mem-bers apparently tried to abandon ship. Condi-tions may have been foggy at the time.

There was also a third crew member, but he got off the boat the previ-ous night in Port Hardy due to illness. Bates said Coast Guard was called

to assist in that incident as well, but would not elaborate on the details.

After the Mayday call went out early Mon-day, several boats in the immediate area came to assist, followed later by the Coast Guard lifeboat Cape Palmerston out of Campbell River.

The two remaining crew were safely evacu-ated and the captain was escorted to Campbell River while Coast Guard towed his boat.

Awaiting the captain at the docks in Campbell River were Mounties, Canadian Border Ser-vices, Transport Canada, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Police arrested the captain on suspicion of impaired operation of

a motor vessel and dan-gerous operation of a motor vessel.

The 60-year-old skip-per from Washington State was later released from custody and deliv-ered into the hands of Border Services. Trans-port Canada was there to investigate the ground-ing while a Fisheries offi-cer inspected the vessel’s hold.

“There was a catch issue,” said Staff Sgt. Beauregard.

The skipper’s name was not released.

Picture yourself in the park by the foreshore with green islands, snow-capped peaks, dark-blue ocean and rugged fish-ing boats as your back-ground.

And now, you even get your own frame.

Thanks to the Down-town BIA, families, friends and visitors can pose in the “white space” of a 9x9-foot picture frame. The large dark

bronze frame – scripted with “Campbell River” – was installed Tues-day afternoon in Robert Ostler Park and was cel-ebrated with the opening pop of sparkling brut.

“This is great, cheers everyone!” said Jan Tees of the Downtown BIA as she raised a toast.

As concrete workers smoothed out the final pour to the cement pad surrounding the frame, Tees finished off her glass and then prepared to spend the night hun-kered down by the instal-lation.

“No one is going to spoil this. It’s taken too long to do!” she said, as others teased her about drawing their initials in the fresh concrete.

Tees explained the idea

came from local resident Wendy Baker who saw a similar frame on a trip to Europe. Baker thought it was something the Downtown BIA could add to the community.

That was two years ago. Since then, Tees has been busy co-ordinating the project.

First, RBC and Royal LePage Advance Realty stepped up and agreed to help sponsor the con-struction. The city came next, granting permis-sion for the frame and contributing by doing the concrete work and adding benches.

The “shadow box” bronze frame was made by S out h Harb our Marine and then Grant Signs took it to their shop to have it reinforced,

sanded and painted, and then the crane truck brought it the park to be erected.

Other sponsors that contributed to the project included the Royal Court Businesses, the Foreshore building businesses, Granite Works, Upland Ready Mix, Island Fever Travel, Tangles Hair Salon & Day Spa, Olive Me Accessories and Jane Super.

“Talk about commu-nity effort!” said a super-happy Tees. “This will be an attraction not only for visitors to our city, but our residents as well. Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, family and high school reunions are just a few of the special events that could be cap-tured.”

Within 48 hours of his release from jail, a young man with a history of mental health issues was in a hospital intensive care unit after drinking several bottles of cough syrup.

Tyler Steinthorson, 23, almost died last Saturday, according to his mother Rhonda Johnson. As of Thursday, he was still under care at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, but Johnson fears it won’t be for long.

“St. Joe’s is notorious for letting him go,” she says.

Johnson advocates for mental health issues in B.C., mostly due to the her son’s experiences caught between two sys-tems which don’t seem to offer the help he needs. Steinthorson grew up in Campbell River and is a paranoid schizophrenic with drug addiction problems.

Crown prosecutor David Fitzsimmons put it another way earlier this summer when Steinthor-son appeared in court on charges of theft, assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and breaching pro-bation.

“The intersection of the justice and mental health systems is not a good place to be,” Fitzsim-

mons said in Campbell River provincial court on July 22.

The charges are noth-ing new. Since 2010, Steinthorson has been charged several times with violent assaults, theft and breaching court orders.

Every time he’s given a psychiatric evaluation ranging from six to 30 days, and usually, at the end, he’s sent back to jail or, when he’s released, it’s not long before he’s arrested again.

Johnson can no lon-ger take care of him and won’t because she fears for her safety and that of her younger son.

She would like to see Steinthorson receive longer term care, prefer-ably at the Colony Farm forensic psychiatric hos-pital in Port Coquitlam.

But Colony Farm is just another institu-tion where Steinthorson comes and goes, and his mother wonders where it will end.

“Somebody is going to end up dead if not my son,” she told Judge Brian Saunderson at the same court appearance in July.

Johnson also predicted that her son would be arrested within 2-3 days of his release from cus-tody.

That didn’t quite hap-pen, instead he’s back in hospital.

After being arrested

in late June, Steinthor-son was released from jail on Aug. 29, after being found criminally not responsible on the

charges. But he had nowhere to go, other than a shelter, said John-son.

Usually, she added, he

will try to stay with drug users in Camp-bell River o r h e’ l l simply go out to the woods. On the day after his release, he showed up at an old friend’s place, but Steinthorson wasn’t welcome because he was drinking cough medica-tion.

He showed up at his friend’s again on Satur-day and this time the buddy took him to his mother’s home in Cour-tenay. Johnson was sur-prised to see him and Steinthorson admitted to drinking five or more bottles of the medication.

For some reason, she said, he agreed to allow Comox Valley RCMP to take him St. Joe’s where he quickly collapsed and was unresponsive. Stein-thorson survived, but Johnson is unsure what the next day will bring.

She fears her son will severely injure another

p e r -son or will be shot by police, a n d t h a t ’ s n o t

unlikely given the cir-cumstances of his last arrest.

On June 20, Steinthor-son stole a five-foot-long walking stick from the Pier Street Trading Post in downtown Camp-bell River. As he was approached by an RCMP office and told to stop, Steinthorson walked out into the middle of the Island Highway.

Fearing he would be hit , the of f icer approached Steinthor-son who swung the stick at her. Fortunately it missed, so she used pep-per spray to subdue him.

By this time a passing motorist stopped to assist the Mountie and more officers were on the way. Two more officers joined the struggle and then more arrived. In all, it

took six police officers to get Steinthorson under control.

Steinthorson is safe for now, said his mother, but when he’s released again he still doesn’t have a home, it’s unlikely he will take his medica-tions, and he’s liable to consume drugs or more cough syrup. Meaning, of course, he will wind up back in some form of custody which he usu-ally spends in segrega-tion due to his violent behaviour.

Johnson has written letters to politicians of all stripes, asking for bet-ter care for people with mental health issues, particularly her son. But the help isn’t coming and she wants the public to know her son’s story.

“I’m so exhausted...don’t know what to do now...who to go to...I need to try to rest for a couple of days but I need this story to go to the media asap,” she said.paulr@campbellriver-

Will the words of Cathy McLeod and Justin Trudeau come back to burn them the next time they try to enter the United States?

Much was made of the federal Liberal leader’s admission that he had smoked pot while serving as an MP — a practise that remains illegal in Canada and the U.S. Shortly thereafter, during an interview with Black Press, McLeod, the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Conservative MP, admitted to smoking

marijuana while in university. On the Labour Day weekend, the omnipotence of

border guards was again on full display as news outlets reported on the experience of Jessica Goldstein, a 30-year-old White Rock student. She managed to get herself banned from Uncle Sam’s land when she replied to a question at the border.

Goldstein was asked: Have you ever smoked marijuana? She replied she had, just the week before, in fact. She

also admitted taking magic mushrooms and ecstasy and now finds herself on the outside looking into the United States.

The question is: Will McLeod, Trudeau, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and the many other politicians who have admitted smoking a joint be subject to the same

Draconian response from the United States?Probably not, simply because of who they are and what

they do. If you are a simple student going to a concert in the U.S., admitting to smoking a joint can change your life for the worse.

If you are an MP going to a conference in the U.S., sharing an identical admission at the border will result in you getting to that meeting.

Why? Because life is not fair and because not all people are subject to the same punishment when breaking the law. Goldstein’s greatest crime was not smoking pot — it was being foolish enough to admit as much at the border.

No-one can out-yell Logger Mike in traffic gridlock

We say: Actions at the border will result in people hiding the truth

It was practically gridlock in down-town Campbell River and few were happy.

Twas Friday afternoon, just a few hours before knocking-off time and the unof-ficial start to the Labour Day weekend.

Long weekends always create panic as fun-seekers load up on weenies, buns, booze and just enough ‘smores supplies to gooey up an entire campsite.

Getting out of “Dodge” on these days requires real focus.

Errand boy, or girl, must compete for the last narrow spaces in the gauntlet of chaotic plaza parking lots. Then there are the painful waits in slow-moving check-out lines. Finally, you try to make it back to home base and that’s where it goes to Fort Mac in a hand basket.

Shopper’s Row jams up with vehicles oozing from every side street and then you have the pedestrians who dawdle in the crosswalks as they giggle at another “lol message” on their crackberries.

Add in the downtown construction that’s closed St. Ann’s Road and there you have it, all the makings for bedlam!

So there I was, stuck in “gridlock” as if I were driving in downtown Vancouver. Well, it’s never that bad and “real traffic” in Campbell River typically means you get home five minutes later – big deal.

Others though, aren’t so patient.Take, for instance, the cabbie waiting at

the four-way stop at Shopper’s and 11th Avenue. I had arrived at the intersection first, but wasn’t going anywhere because traffic was backed right up to the cross-

walk due to the new four-way stop just up Shopper’s at 10th Ave.

As I waited for a pedestrian to first cross and the traffic to clear, the frus-trated cabbie tried to drive through first. Not to be outdone, I proceeded into the intersection with my hand firmly planted on the horn.

It was at the height of craziness when Big Logger Mike suddenly jumped down from his spar pole.

“EVERYBODY STOP!” he bellowed, as his voice bounced off the Strathcona mountains and everyone came to a halt.

“Geez Louise, I’ve had enough of this madness,” he went on. “It’s bad enough I’m smack dab in the middle of this mess, but it’s even worse when guys like you and you [he was pointing at me and

the cabbie] can’t behave decently!”I looked sheepish while the cabbie

looked over his shoulder as if Big Mike was yelling at someone else.

He shook a scolding finger at us, then grabbed an oversized stop sign and started directing traffic like an honest-to-goodness cop.

“You proceed, you SLOW DOWN, and you, stop putting on make-up while you’re driving,” Logger Mike ordered.

Suddenly, everything was moving smoothly again, but Big Mike wasn’t fin-ished.

“You, yes YOU, get the heck off that skateboard or yer gettin’ a paddlin’ with this stop sign!”

So much for the disfunctional family at Campbell River City Hall.

One member of council seems to think a land-swap is on the same level as borrowing $15 million?  The prime rea-son for government existence is to provide basic services, yet locally, there seems to be a focus on soccer fields over providing sewer /water services? IF this borrowing pro-posal goes to Referendum, we must make sure the $5 mil-lion soccer field budget gets the same scrutiny as the sewer upgrades. Again, we might see it get defeated by the tax-payer, despite council’s wishes. It’s time to call the bluff on the other levels of government we are feeding. So the money was ear-marked for a playing field? Spend that money on the sewer upgrades, then get the media cameras in the faces of any regional /federal /provincial bureaucrats stating play-ing fields are more important than sewer systems.

Governments all over the world are struggling to maintain infrastructure or warm-and-fuzzy projects implemented back in the days when money was free and easy. Our mayor seems to understand this problem. In 14 months, the most logical thing he could do is run a slate of logical people who can make city hall accountable and functional.

Conversations with Mike

By Paul Rudan

Page 9: Campbell River Mirror, September 06, 2013

In the 80’s, as a soldier, I spent a lot of time in the field, communicating on various types of radios. Back in the early 90’s I got my first cell phone, as part of my work in the Army.

Had it with me all the time and used it almost every day. In the late 90’s, I was installing and using Wireless routers and wireless computers and was on my 4th cell phone. When I retired from the Army, I started my own IT company and spent a lot of time installing and using a variety of WiFi devices and appliances. By this time, I was on my 7th cell phone. Today, I have several wireless trans-mitters in my home, sev-eral iPhones, iPads and other wireless receiving devices. I use WiFi and cell service virtually everywhere I go.

According to Mrs. Latchford, I should be dead. No one can pos-sibly survive that much EMF.

With over 20 years of technology experience and use, I think I can call myself knowledgable about WiFi. I was using wireless services before there was an Internet connection that EMF fear mongers could use to educate themselves on. I have only one real ques-tion for those Google educated “experts”: Do you really understand how much wireless sig-nal and/or radiation is already around you?

Did you use a cordless phone today? Did you walk by a satellite dish or use a microwave oven? Did you sit in front of a computer to send those e-mails or search the Web? Did you listen to the radio in your car?

Did you stand outside in the sun, today?

If you picked up a phone when you were a teenager, did you know anything about the mag-net you were putting next to your ear? Did you cringe every time you had to drive under high tension power lines? Did you ever think of the cosmic radiation we are exposed to every day?

I have read all the reports from organiza-tions like the WHO and it frustrates me that the anti-WiFi crowd cherry picks the information out of these documents. No words like “incon-clusive” and comments such as “To date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile

phone use (WHO Fact Sheet - June 2013)” are ever used in their rants about the harm of EMF. The biggest issue around EMF is the fear and anx-iety that this crowd cre-ates on their own.

The fact is, the reason that some schools and governments have lim-ited or eliminated WiFi is not because of science. It’s because of the pres-sure created by a public being educated by the bits and pieces of data that serves a particular agenda from a particu-lar group. If you were to run a digital spectrum analysis in any commu-nity, with or without cell towers and WiFi, you would find all kinds of signals flying around. Why, because we have

been surrounded by all of these various signals for many decades.

Council needs to spend a little more time educat-

ing themselves in under-standing the technology and a little less time pan-dering to a 100 home-owners who are scared

about something they don’t really understand themselves.

The musical jam and auction takes place at Thunderbird Hall from 3-9 p.m., and is a 19-and-over event. There will be Canucks hockey pack-ages up for bid, along with First Nations carv-ings, prints and jewellry.

Henderson’s artwork

hangs in many Camp-bell River homes. Masks he has painted (his brother Bill is a master carver) are displayed in the Museum at Camp-bell River and his best known local work is the paintings of aboriginal images the entrance to the Campbell River Big House.

T h e G ov e r n m e nt of Canada will invest in harbour projects at Campbell River, Gorge Harbour, and Heriot Bay as part of a $7.9 million program of maintenance, repair, construction and dredging projects at small craft harbours across British Columbia.

“Our Government rec-ognizes that small craft harbours play a vital role for the fishing industry and local communi-ties,” said John Duncan, Minister of State, Chief Government Whip and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North. “The investment

announced today dem-onstrates this Govern-ment’s commitment to providing safe and func-tional harbours. It will support local economies, create jobs and benefit commercial fishers and their communities for years to come.”

The major projects announced include:

n Maintenance and repair

Replacement of exist-ing electrical transform-ers and receptacle cabi-nets at Campbell River (Discovery Harbour); and Reconstruction of the launching and load-ing ramp at Gorge Har-

bour.n DredgingDredging to modify

the harbour entrance at Heriot Bay Harbour.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada undertakes these projects in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that man-age and operate facili-ties for local users. Close cooperation between the Department and har-bour authorities allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of the commer-cial fishing industry.

Local businesses can look for-ward to setting up shop in Campbell River and being able to do business throughout central Vancouver Island, with a one-stop mobile business license program.

At its August 27 meeting, City Council approved in principal a pro-gram that would license businesses to operate across 12 central Vancouver Island jurisdictions. Once in place, the new program will set up busi-nesses applying for a local license to purchase an additional permit that allows them to operate in any of the participating communities.

Central Vancouver Island commu-nities within the partnership region that would be covered by one addi-tional $150 business license include: Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland, Duncan, Ladysmith, Lake Cowichan, Nanaimo, North Cowichan, Parksville, Port Alberni and Qualicum Beach. In Brit-ish Columbia, a business license is

required in the municipality where the business operates. To operate a business across multiple munici-palities, a separate license is required for each jurisdiction. A mobile or inter-municipal business license allows businesses, such as contrac-tors, to operate in multiple munici-palities and regional districts. Typi-cally, the multi-jurisdiction approach streamlines the licensing process and reduces the cost for business owners.

“The Campbell River Chamber of Commerce and City staff have been working closely and collaboratively to build a more business-friendly environment, and the concept of an inter-community business license program arose as a key initiative to pursue together,” says Ron Neufeld, the City’s deputy city manager and general manager of operations. “This is an opportunity to support our local business community and another way to market Campbell River as a great place to do business.”

Local home learning option focuses on community

Parents and families who may be interested in home learning are encouraged to check out eBlend, School District 72’s home learning

program for students in kindergarten to grade 9.

The program helps provide a personalized education that continues to meet the British Columbia Ministry of Education learning outcomes while building relationships between home learners, the school district, and the local

community. When students register

for eBlend, individual learning plans are created cooperatively by the parent, the student, and an eBlend teacher.

Recognizing that the parent is ultimately the teacher in home learning, this educator collaborates with parents and students

to find the best possible learning experiences for each individual child, while ensuring that they continue to work at grade level.

To learn more about eBlend visit www.sd72.bc.ca/school/distributedlearning or contact the program at (250) 923-4918.

Concussion is a Brain Injury? You don't have to have passed out to have suffered a concussion. Some people will have obvious symptoms of a concussion, such as passing out or forgetting what happened right before the injury. Others will only experience brief gaps in memory or disorientation.Minor concussions can cause serious problems. Repeated concussions or a severe concussion may lead to long-lasting problems with movement, learning or speech. Because of the small chance of permanent brain problems, it is important to get the right diagnosis and treatment. We can act onyour behalf to get you the best medical specialist possible. Child Restraint in TaxisI haven’t been a grandpa for long, but little children are suddenly interesting for me again. They seem to catch my attention more easily and this was the case a few days ago while I was driving in Nanaimo. The little boy involved was sitting on his mother’s lap while they rode in the back seat of a taxi.

I couldn’t see below his shoulders but he was either unrestrained or worse still, belted into the lap belt with his mother. She was belted in, evidenced by the shoulder belt across her torso. Why wasn’t he in a seatbelt or child restraint? Even though he is exempted from having to use child restraint or a seatbelt while riding in a taxi it would still be smart to do so.

I contacted the taxi services and asked if they had a child restraint that I could use if I brought a small child along on a taxi ride. No, we don’t provide these was the response, but you are welcome to bring your own. I suspect that the company is concerned, and rightly so, about legal liability if they provided the restraint and something happened because of it.

However I do feel strongly that the parent or caregiver should be prepared to provide their own restraint. If not, then the child should at least be secured with a lap belt. Never, ever, under any circumstances put a child in the seatbelt with you!

If you need an added boost of endorphins floating gleefully through your body, join the Sing For Pure Joy! Commu-nity Choir.

This is a safe, non-judgmental circle where every voice is wel-come. No experience needed and no auditions required - only the desire to make joyful sounds to

help access and express the profound joy and beauty at our core.

No written music is used. Raise your voice with heart-felt melodies, soulful gospel songs and spirituals, world music, chants and rounds. Songs from the ridicu-lous to the sublime! The majority of music in the world comes from the

oral tradition and all songs are taught by call and response recogni-tion that this is the most accessible and effective way for the majority of people to learn and

retain songs in the lon-ger term.

They gather at the Quadra Community Centre in Room 3 on Monday afternoons from 3-4:30 p.m. beginning on

Den in Campbell River (Across from Thrifty’s) on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8 p.m. begin-ning on Sept. 11.

Rivercity Players will be raising the curtain on their new 80-seat venue on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The new venue will be called Rivercity Stage and will be housed in the Michelle Nelson Wood-row Studio at 1080 Hem-lock Street.

“Rivercity Revival” is the name of the celebra-tory event which will mark the finish of the extensive renovations which have been made to bring their old premises up to scratch as a perfor-mance venue.

Linda von Zuben, pres-ident of Rivercity Play-ers, says “We have had an extremely lucky year. First of all our land-lady, Michelle Nelson

Woodrow, donated the building to us and then with generous grants from the City of Camp-bell River and Artsvest, together with huge dona-tions of time and labour from members and local craftsmen, we were able to complete the job.

“ U n f o r t u n a t e l y , Michelle died as renova-tions were in progress, so we are calling the build-ing after her to com-memorate her marvelous gift.”

Rivercity Revival will be a fun event for every-one. Starting at one o’clock, there will be conducted tours of the new premises led by club members in full costume.

Refreshments wi l l

be available and lots of entertainment for chil-dren will be provided – music, face painting, audition tent, fairy tale photo portraits, jugglers – everything to make the opening of the new venue a memorable occa-sion.

And all of Campbell River is invited to come and share the fun.

“Our membership is very proud of what we have achieved,” says von Zuben. “We are only waiting for the final building inspetion before we have our first show in the renovated theatre, a comedy called Sin, Sex, and the CIA, which is sure to be a Campbell River crowd pleaser.”

Hair-owing experienceTammy Yurkiw of T & T Hair Design (right) shaves Linda Penman’s head at the Seniors’ Centre at Radiant Life Church Thursday after-noon. Yurkiw was joined by fellow Seniors’ Society member Sharon Harper who also had her head shaved. Penman came up with the idea as a way to raise awareness of the Seniors’ Centre and to raise money for the senior’s building fund to purchase or lease its own building. The women together raised $1,000.

Carihi Secondary graduate, Talise Lindenbach, and Timberline Secondary graduate, Natasha Farrant are School District 72’s 2013 recipients of the prestigious Governor General’s Medallion.

Each secondary school in the province is given a medallion to annually recognize the graduate who has achieved the highest, combined academic grade point average from their grade 11 and 12 years.

Carihi Secondary’s top academic student, Talise Lindenbach, is heading to the University of Victoria this September where she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree. In addition to being an outstanding academic student, Talise has been actively involved in the Carihi Rotary Interact Club volunteering for the Salvation Army Kettles, the Campbell River Food Bank’s Christmas food drive, Relay for Life, and the Shoreline Beach Clean-Up. She has also generously donated her time with the Campbell River Multicul-tural Society’s Walk Away From Racism event and annual health fair, as well as been an assistant coach for a house league soccer team in the U12 age divi-sion.

Natasha Farrant, Timberline’s top academic stu-dent, is currently enrolled at the University of Brit-ish Columbia where she is also going to be working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. Her dream is to ultimately attend medical school and pursue a career as a pediatrician. During her years at Timber-line, Natasha contributed to the community through her involvement with the school’s leadership, Inter-national Co-Op, Rotary Interact, and Global Issues clubs.

“We wish Talise and Natasha bright futures and are extremely proud of all they have accomplished,” says Tom Longridge, superintendent for School District 72. “These two outstanding students have greatly contributed to their school and community, as well as shown excellence and dedication in their studies.”

At every corner I was empowered to succeed. As a graduate of the Licensed Practical Nursing program I have the con dence and skills needed to be an outstanding nurse. That’s a good thing, because, I was hired shortly after graduation in my dream job, working as a oor nurse.”

James M., Licensed Practical Nurse

“Discovery Community College changed my life! After 11 years in a dead end job I knew I needed a change. I had always enjoyed working with the elderly, so the Health Care Assistant program was a perfect t. At rst I was nervous because I was the oldest person in my class. That did not last long! The program is amazing! Everyone, from my instructors to the Campus Manager, cared about my success, even after I graduated. I was eased into the learning and, before I knew it, I was doing things I had only dreamed of. Discovery gave me the con dence and the skills to succeed. And I have the new job to prove it!“

The City of Campbell River has found help from nearby local gov-ernments to ride the ris-ing local building wave.

“With the number of commercial projects occurring in Campbell River, and the interest from the development community to discuss potential plans with City staff, we’ve made tempo-rary arrangements with the Strathcona Regional District and Comox Val-ley Regional District to help us keep up with ris-ing demand to process building permits,” says Ron Neufeld, the City’s General Manager Opera-tions. In addition to the short-term assistance from the Strathcona Regional District and the Comox Valley Regional District, the city cur-rently is currently work-ing to recruit a building inspector.

Neufeld emphasizes that streamlining the process for permits is in place for all applicants, but efficiency depends on builders and develop-ers having the required details available to pro-cess applications.

“Larger building proj-ects often rely on a cer-tified registered pro-fessional to sign off on aspects of the job, which often helps these proj-ects run more smoothly,” Neufeld explains. “Once all the required paper-work is submitted to the City, then the permit process is expedited.”

To support the local building and develop-ment sector, the City of Campbell River’s Land Use Department offers a series of regular lunch-

time forums that high-light different aspects of the permitting process and provide an oppor-tunity for industry rep-resentatives and City staff to discuss the steps required to keep the per-mitting system moving forward.

Campbell River’s inter-action with property owners and builders and the city’s fees and speedy turnaround time for building permits were recently praised by Building Links, a pub-lication that released second quarter statistics comparing Campbell River and the Comox Valley in July.

Campbell River Search and Rescue airlifted an injured adventurer from a remote spot on the mainland coast Wednes-day evening.

When the call came for assistance from Port McNeill RCMP, three search volunteers, trained in swift-water rescue and advance First Aid, flew 40 minutes by helicopter to the emer-gency beacon signal.

With darkness setting in, two men in their 40s,

one with a badly sprained ankle, were found along the Wakeman River, located northwest of Kingcome Inlet.

“The two men had been dropped off by heli-copter a couple of days earlier some distance upstream with a canoe and supplies,” said search manager Grant Cromer.

“They were skilled canoeists and success-fully negotiated a diffi-cult canyon upstream of the accident. They were

well-prepared and expe-rienced in wilderness travel.”

They also took full advantage of their emer-gency beacon. Cromer said the condition of the injured man would have likely worsened if they had continued on their journey and credited them for using the bea-con at the right time.

“The spot beacon co-ordinates in this case were very accurate and we found them within

200 metres of where the beacon had put them,” he said.

“We encourage all back country users that are on extended remote wilder-ness trips to carry a loca-ter beacon or satellite phone of some kind.”

The searchers were also on high alert for grizzly bears on the mainland coast, especially this time of year when salmon are spawning in the rivers.

The two men were air-lifted to Port McNeill.

(SAR) is looking for a few good men and women to join the group.

There’s room for a limited num-ber of applicants this fall. Applicants must be 19 years or older, submit to a criminal and driver’s record check, take a First Aid course, and attend an orientation meeting and personal interview.

Those selected will participate in the Justice Institute of B.C. ground SAR education program which is roughly 80 hours of field and class-room education.

After passing, new members can expect to take part in ground, water and alpine rescues, provide First Aid as well as medical evacuations.

Campbell River has a very busy group and covers a large territory – the whole North Island and the main-land coast.

Application forms can be down-loaded from www.crsar.ca or pick one up in person from the Campbell River Volunteer Centre located in the base-ment at city hall.

Get your applications in well before the Oct. 10 orientation session.

Wanted: A few good volunteer searchers

T h e S t r a t h c o n a Regional District and the Campbell River Storm Hockey Club have signed off a new agree-ment covering the use of the Strathcona Gardens recreation facility by the Storm.

The agreement is the result of a lengthy pro-cess of discussion and negotiation which com-menced late last year.

The agreement pro-vides the Storm with a combination of exclusive and non-exclusive uses at the Strathcona Gardens and, in particular:n provides for up to

140 games and prac-tices during each regular hockey season;n confers specific

advertising and signage

rights for the Storm;n grants exclusive use

of dedicated office space for the Storm;n allows for shared

use of the Fitness Studio, Pinecrest Room, Dog-wood Room, VIP North Room and common areas.

In exchange, the Storm will pay $2,750 per month for its use of the Strathcona Gardens.

“The Regional District is pleased to have been able to accommodate the Storm at the Strath-cona Gardens without compromising the needs of other users” said Ted Lewis, Chair of the Regional District Board of Directors. This sen-timent was echoed by Andy Adams, Chair of

the Strathcona Gardens Commission, who stated “the agreement recog-nizes the Storm Hockey Club as the largest single user of the Strathcona Gardens. Campbell River is a ‘Hockey Town’ and this creates an environ-ment for success by the Storm while maintain-ing public accountability over the next 19 months”.

T h e S t r a t h c o n a Regional District is a partnership of four electoral areas and five municipalities providing approximately 43,000 residents with 72 services including parks, liquid and solid waste systems, fire protection, emer-gency preparedness pro-grams and a full-service sports facility.

Every September we are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that comes from people like you who love animals and participate in our Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walks. Across the province, people of all ages come out, rain or shine, to show they are there to help animals in need. We remain so grateful.

The hundreds of thousands of dollars raised in support of our work help the animals who need us the most in communities across this province. The BC SPCA appreciates how hard you work for every dollar raised and we are proud to let you know we have earned an “A+” in overall efficiency, fundraising efficiency and transparency in a

recent survey of 100 Canadian charities by MoneySense magazine. For more

information on how your fundraising dollars directly impact the animals we care for and protect, I encourage

you to explore the Where your Dollars Go section of this site.

Thank you for joining us in this very important event helping animals. Your support, in all its forms, helps give homeless, injured and abused animals the second chance they deserve. Without people like you who want to help, our cruelty

wouldn’t be possible. On behalf of the animals, thank you again for showing you care. I wish you the best of luck with your

Renewed search for a new homeThe SPCA in Campbell River's search for a new home continues.

While the BC SPCA is disappointed by the City of Campbell River’s Aug. 13 decision not to approve the rezoning required for a proposed new SPCA Education & Adoption Centre at the Maritime Heritage Centre, the SPCA remains deeply committed to helping animals in Campbell River and looks forward to partnering with the city in a renewed search for an appropriate space.

Between March and July, the Maritime Centre was the only leasehold space the SPCA was able to identify which met their specifi c requirements. To assist them opening as soon as possible, they are hoping that the community will come forward if they are aware of any leasehold space that meets the following requirements:

• 1600-2100 square feet at $ 7 - 15 dollars/ sq ft

• Water, sewer and natural gas in the leasehold property itself

• Zoned for kennelling

• Access near to park or walkway to walk dogs

• Good parking

• Access to public transit

The rezoning decision will unfortunately delay the opening of a new centre as they seek appropriate leasehold space,

but the SPCA looks forward to its future in Campbell River and is excited about the Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk on Sept. 8 at Nunn’s Creek Park and other events to support the new centre.

In late July, the B.C. SPCA announced it had found a suitable location and would set up its animal shelter at the city-owned Maritime Heritage Centre.

One day later, the city said it had never been approached by the SPCA to use its facility and further, the zoning of the site did not allow for the SPCA’s intended use.

So, on Aug. 13, council did not approve the SPCA’s re-location to the Maritime Heritage Centre which now has prompted the SPCA to start over.

The SPCA’s decision to look elsewhere was also a blow to the Maritime Heritage Society which lobbied council to agree to have the SPCA as a tenant.

M.J. (Marv) Everett, president of the Maritime Heritage Society, wrote a letter to council stressing the importance of fi nding a long-term renter.

“It is essential to the on-going operation of the MHS and the on-going fulfi lment of our operating mandate that we fi nd a secure and reliable tenant for the vacant MHC space,” said Everett who claimed council has had “continued indifference and apathy to our numerous pleas over the past several years for a fair, non-oppressive contract.”

Everett also said that if a re-zoning was necessary to accommodate the SPCA, the Maritime Heritage Society was prepared to do whatever it took to make the zoning changes happen.

Meanwhile, the BC SPCA said it chose the Maritime Heritage

Centre because it fi t the animal society’s needs.

“In our search between March and July, 2013, the Maritime Centre was the only leasehold space the SPCA was able to identify which met our specifi c requirements,” according to the BC SPCA.

Suggestions have already been making the rounds on the Campbell River SPCA’s Facebook page.

Possible options fl oated include the former Lite Shop on 13th Avenue, Campbell River Common, Sunrise Plaza in Willow Point as well as the former Canada Trust building in Merecroft Village, though the former bank site was ruled out as the rent is out of the SPCA’s price range.

The SPCA's great support in the community will ensure that a new home will be found. With dedicated friends like Tom Burton, a former volunteer dog walker, and corporate support in the community from companies like Save-On-Foods,the SPCA can't help but be successful.

Burton organized a fundraising program with the help of Save-On-Foods.

“Save-On-Foods jumped on the bandwagon immediately,” Burton said. “Save-On-Foods got back to me in three days. They’re terrifi c, absolutely terrifi c.”

What the store is doing to help is allowing customers who are a part of the Save-On More rewards program to redeem their points in 1,000 point increments towards the SPCA’s building fund.

Burton said Save-On-Foods will continue with the fundraising program as long as there’s activity in the account.

It's that kind of support that is the SPCA's strength in the community.

We ❤ BCSPCA

I would like to thank our donors, supporters, volunteers and especially the staff of the Campbell Branch for their support, caring, and devotion to “speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves”. With all of your help, we have been able to provide the highest quality of animal care to the animals in Campbell River and surrounding communities. Throughout the years a lot of relationships have developed, with businesses, veterinarians, but especially my team, I am proud to have been part of the BC SPCA for 27 years and to have been able to work with you, and for the animals.

I would like to ask our donors and supporters to continue to support the BC SPCA ,now as we continue with our transition period, and to promise you that the Cruelty Investigation Department will still be available to address any concerns pertaining to the care of animals in their homes.

Together and as a Team we DID make a difference in animals lives. Without all of your help, we would not have been able to do so.

Where your dollars goThe w & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause is the organization’s biggest fundraiser and our work would not be possible without your support. All funds raised at each walk stay in the community to make the life saving work of your local BC SPCA branch possible. We pride ourselves on our low administration and fundraising costs and work hard to ensure that your fundraising directly impacts the animals we serve: In 2013 the BC SPCA joined an elite group of only 45 charities in Canada to become accredited by Imagine Canada through its Standards Program. This means that we have met their high standards in fi ve fundamental areas: fi nancial accountability

About Paws for a CauseWhen we work together, anything is paws-sible! For over twenty years, animal lovers throughout British Columbia have come together to walk in support of their local BC SPCA branches. In 2004, these walks organized as one provincewide movement for the first Paws for a Cause.

Today, the walks raise $1 million each year towards improving animal welfare in British Columbia.

Join us this September 8* and enjoy an amazing day of celebration, fun and heart warming stories.

Come meet a shelter animal and see the difference your community has made in the lives of animals in need. By fundraising and walking (with or without your four-legged friend!) you are letting others know that animal welfare is important to you. Whether you are the proud guardian of a BC SPCA adoptee, love buying our certified food products or are just looking for the opportunity to join with others to save animal lives, the Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause is for you.

The experiences, pictures and stories you share through your personal fundraising page, face-to-face fundraising and participation on walk day will connect you with other animal lovers and help spread the word to other members of your community.

Steve was born May 23, 1974; oldest son to Martha and Steve Sr. Steve has always loved the outdoors and throughout his life enjoyed many adventures in the woods and on the ocean. More than anything, Steve loved his family. His nieces and nephews were his pride and joy. Throughout the years, Steve struggled with his health but kept his sense of humor until the Lord called him home. Steve is survived by his parents Martha and Steve; his grandfather Walter Tyerman; his sister Maggie (Rob); his brothers Kris (Eleasha) and Andrew (Melissa). He is also survived by his adopted sisters Rhonda (Mike), Karen Finney and Cathy. Steve is survived by his precious nieces and nephews: Mackenzie, Amelia, Melyssa, Tahsys, Brittany, Gavin and Owen. Steve will be dearly missed by his cat Mars Bar and a multitude of extended family and friends. A funeral service took place on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 in Campbell River at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The family of Steve would like to extend a special thanks to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Dufferin Place and his “family” in the NRGH Renal Unit for their love and care for Steve over the years where he had made Nanaimo his home.

When God saw you getting tiredAnd a cure was not to be,

He put his arms around you,And whispered,“Come to Me.”

With tearful eyes we watched youAnd saw you pass away.

And although we love you dearly,We could not make you stay.

A Golden heart stopped beating,Hard working hands at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us.He only takes the best.

87 years ago a very special light went on in Toronto when Frank Chidley was born. That beacon would follow him on his move west to B.C. and Vancouver Island as a young man of 20 and would continue lighting the way his entire life.Frank, an inventive self taught persevering chap, was by turn a farmer, Lancaster tail gunner, miner, beach-comber, hand-

logger, commercial fisherman and tugboater. He was a salvage diver, welder, sawmill operator, caretaker, repairman, organic baker, father and grandfather. His 5 boys and 3 girls were his proudest achievement and each one of them bares that distinctive “Chidley” brand. All emulating their father’s love of life, hard work, his sense of adventure, inventiveness, joy, love and laughter. Forever questing! Endlessly questioning! Fearlessly seizing every opportunity and miracle that life sends their way and running with it.

Steve’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Dufferin Place and his “family” in the NRGH Renal Unit for their love and care for Steve over the years where he had made Nanaimo his home.

Steven Walter Fredrick Tyerman Jr. May 23, 1974 – Aug 27, 2013

87 years ago a very special light went on in Toronto when Frank Chidley was born. That beacon would follow him on his move west to B.C. and Vancouver Island as a young man of 20 and would continue lighting the way his entire life.Frank, an inventive self taught persevering chap, was by turn a farmer, Lancaster tail gunner, miner, beach-comber, hand-logger, commercial fisherman and

tugboater. Frank and Cyndy have been blessed with a wonderful 40 years together and 11 amazing grandchildren. A heartfelt thank you from the family to the central nurses, homecare team, the pharmacy and Dr. DeBruin for all their amazing loving care for Frank during his struggle.

Cyndy and Family invite all who wish to celebrate Frank’s life to gather at the Oyster Bay Resort

for a salmon and tuna BBQ on Sept. 29th at 2:30pm.

It’s no surprise that the pink salmon in the Campbell River

were the stars when the hosts of The Fish’n Can-ada Show came to town last week.

But a special guest crashed the show and stole some of the lime-light while Fish’n Can-ada hosts Angelo Viola and Pete Bowman were filming in the river.

“We had a mother bear come right out of the forest,” said Jamie Turko, owner of Destiny River Adventures, who invited the hosts of the longest-running fishing show on Canadian tele-vision to come to town Aug. 27-30.

It was the first of a number of appearances put in by Campbell River black bears dur-ing the show’s filming. At one point Viola and Bowman watched and filmed a bear snatch a fish out of the river.

“The bears performed for us,” Turko said. “There was lots of bear action.”

The Fish’n Canada Show appearance in Campbell River came about after Turko pitched an idea to Viola and Bowman last win-ter. He suggested to

the iconic fishing show producers that they’ve shown lots of fish being caught but would they like to show the ones that got away?

Turko’s Destiny River Adventures is well-known for its swimming with the salmon excur-sions in which people don wet suits, masks and snorkels and float down the river right into schools of salmon head-ing upriver to spawning beds.

It’s put Campbell River on the map with outdoor adventure trav-ellers, those who might not know the area for its famous salmon fishing.

Destiny River Adven-tures scored a publicity coup for Campbell River a couple of years ago when they lured Cana-dian political satirist and T.V. personality Rick Mercer to town do a show.

The Fish’n Canada Show took the bait from Turko as well and agreed to do an episode from Campbell River. Turko worked with Tourism Campbell River and Hello B.C. to secure flights and accommoda-tion at the Best Western Austrian Chalet for the show hosts and two camera men for four nights. When Viola and Bowman said they

wanted to eat seafood when they got here, Turko took them to Quay West Kitchen and Catering who pulled out all the stops and filled them up with West Coast fare all from a reserved window seat overlooking Discovery Passage.

With great fishing on the river, bear sightings, feasting on seafood, see-ing Elk Falls and even visiting Haig-Brown House, there was only one more thing that would complete Fish’n Canada’s trip to Camp-bell River.

Yep, you guessed it, Tyee fishing.

Viola and Bowman

were given the full Tyee Club experience. They were guided by Dave Hadden in his cedar-strip rowboat on the Tyee Pool and when they came ashore, they were fed barbecued salmon. The show also filmed a segment on the history of the Tyee Club and they were able to film three qualifying Tyee landings: a 30.5, 31.5 and a 41-pounder.

“They saw these fish being caught and being weighed and the bell dinging and everything,” Turko said.

All-in-all, it turned out to be a successful visit by the popular show hosts.

“Everything went

so well, except for the weather,” Turko said. After a month of sun-shine, Fish’n Canada’s visit coincided with a return of rain. But despite that, the visit

couldn’t have gone bet-ter. Turko said the hosts were amazed that all of this great fishing and these experiences were available right in the middle of town.

“They were blown away,” he said. “This is all going to be on national television.

“It’s going to promote this area and it’s going to make it look like a wildlife preserve or Mecca. They were really impressed.”

And that’s what Turko was hoping for. Born and raised in Campbell River, Turko wants to promote the city as much as possible. Sure, he says, it benefits his business but the expo-sure also benefits Camp-bell River.

“It’s not just about me, it’s about Campbell River and trying to keep

the people here and sharing what we have to offer,” Turko said.

He was able to pull the visit off with the help of other local busi-nesses, particularly the Best Western Austrian Chalet, Quay West Kitchen, Ryan’s Pizza, Dave Hadden and the Tyee Club, Tourism Campbell River, Hello B.C., and Coastal Wil-derness Adventure who provided the licensed fishing guide.

Fish’n Canada is broadcast in 12 coun-tries and in six lan-guages. In Canada it is shown on Sportsnet on Saturday mornings. Turko said the Campbell River segment will be shown before Christ-mas in a date to be determined and will be re-broadcast four times in 2014.
