Principal’s Message

➲ Carihi School 2013 Graduates

As we get closer to fi nishing another school year, our thoughts turn towards our graduating class and the upcoming celebrations we have planned for them. June becomes a very busy time for Grade 12 students as they prepare for exams, fi nish courses and partake in the many activities that year-end brings. At Carihi, we are very proud of our graduating class and the contributions they have made to our school over the past 3 years. They have contributed to our school culture by accepting and celebrating diversity, working diligently at their studies and getting involved in our many extra-curricular activities. They have been good ambassadors and representatives of all of the things that make Carihi a great place to learn. Our graduates will take this time to refl ect on thirteen years of schooling and their thoughts will turn to all of the people who have helped shape them into the people they have become- parents, teachers, coaches, and extended family- and it is our hope that the people closest to them share in their celebrations. Their thoughts will also turn to what is next for them and while their future paths will be as diverse as the ones they took to get here, we hope they follow their passions with great anticipation and spirit. We are counting on you to be the leaders of tomorrow and keep our community vibrant and prosperous. My sincere hope for all of you is that the skills you have learned here at Carihi will serve you well in the future and that you have the tools to follow your dreams. Keep your spirit of learning and bring enthusiasm to all that you do. Please take time to give back to the community that has given much to you. To all of our grads, I wish you all the best and remember- once a Tyee, always a Tyee! Please stay in touch. » Sean Toal, Principal Carihi Secondary School

➲ Christian School 2013 Graduates

In Tolkienʼs The Hobbit in spite of much encouragement, Bilbo Baggins says he does not want to leave the shire. Gandalf continues to impress upon Bilbo the necessity of accepting the challenge of unseen things beyond to achieve a noble goal. Many of you have been in the shire, the comfort zone of Campbell River Christian School, for a very long time and now you are on the edge of a new adventure .. .indeed there are unseen things beyond. Courage will be needed. You have been well prepared for this challenge: You have parents who love you and care for you beyond measure; they have chosen an independent school and consider it an investment in your future. They have sacrifi ced for you. You have had teachers who care for you deeply. Through the lens of their own experience and education they have guided and instructed you in things academically, artistically and athletically ... all within a biblical worldview. They have also introduced you to a variety of worldviews so that you would not be ignorant but you would choose to be respectful of others .... they have gifted you with opportunities to serve in the community of Campbell River and far beyond . ... they have accompanied you through many adventures. Bilbo says, “I just need to sit quietly for a moment.” I encourage you to sit and refl ect and to remember the ancient words of the Psalmist David: Be still and KNOW that I am God; this is followed by .... reverence of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. Right now commit to lifelong learning; knowledge … understanding… is not a destination, but a journey. ̒ Practice itʼ implies dedication and eff ort, ingenuity and imagination; this will enrich your private and your public life ... there are many avenues open to you; choose to settle for nothing less than what you believe is excellence. During Bilboʼs adventure he states, “I have never used a sword in my life.” For Christ-Ones, Christians, our sword, is the Word of God, scripture. You are well equipped for the days and years ahead. Now you are urged to be strong and of good courage .... remember that you are Godʼs masterpiece, created to do good works in His world.

The inspirational leader for the Relay For Life was a teenaged cancer survi-vor. Campbell River’s Joe Howie gave a powerful and personal speech on Saturday evening at the Phoenix School field, setting the tone for the 12-hour relay in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.“In mid-February 2007, I started having pain in my right leg,” the 16-year-old told the audi-ence. “At the time, I didn’t quite understand

what was going on. Once we got to the hospital, they did a bunch of tests on me. The next day they told me that I had leukemia.”At age 10, Howie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He would spend weeks in Vancouver, undergoing chemotherapy treat-ment at BC Children’s Hospital and follow-up treatment while staying at Ronald McDonald House. While undergoing treatment, his kidneys would also fail resulting in six days of dialysis treatment.

Six years can change a lot. The image of the

smiling and brave boy, who had lost his hair during treatment, is now replaced by a strap-ping young man who still has a big smile as well as thick mop of curly brown hair.“People used to say to me, ‘I bet you wish you could go back and change it all’,” Howie recalled. “I would say, ‘No. The fact that I have had this experience, I feel, has shaped who I am and my perspective on life in a very unique way that is so different from my peers’.”Howie is grateful for the support of the Cana-dian Cancer Society, the five years he’s been to

“I love you guys. I’ll call,” Tony Williams said quietly as he waved goodbye to two sobbing women in the Campbell River courtroom.Last month, Williams turned 20 years old. On May 29, he began serv-ing a four-year prison term for kill-ing his half brother Edison Thomas, 33.“This is a very sad day,” said Supreme Court Justice Douglas Thompson. “This case is more tragic than most.”

Williams and Thomas were among 10 children raised by their mother Mabel. Four had already died under tragic circumstances when the two half brothers began drinking heav-ily in the basement of their Mo Road home on Sept. 27, 2011.According to Justice Thompson, the brothers’ relationship is “at its worst” when they drink together. It deteriorated that night and shortly before 2 a.m. the younger Williams wanted to call it quits while Thomas intended to continue party-ing.That led to a fight between the two with Williams taking the brunt of the punishment from the bigger

➲ Timberline School 2013 Graduates

This yearʼs Principal̓ s Message is the most diffi cult that I have ever had to write! It is with mixed emotions that I write my last entry for the Newspaperʼs grad supplement. For in a sense, this is my grad year too!On the one hand, I am very excited about the new opportunities I know my retirement at the end of this school year will bring. On the other hand, I feel a sense of tremendous sadness as the reality sinks in that I will no longer be the principal of your fabulous school. I will miss my daily interactions with all of you. It is not an exaggeration to say that we have laughed, learned and cried together on many occasions. I know that I will also miss the many wonderful traditions that we have developed together over my 16 years as a teacher and administrator here at Timberline.I will remember going to the closing night of each of the musicals and feeling the energy and emotion of a fi nal performance well done. I will remember shedding tears at the karaoke assemblies as the audience erupted with applause for even the most challenged singers.I will also remember watching with pride as our many sports teams competed in the wolf jersey knowing that “win or lose we tried our best”. But most of all, I will remember the many close relationships and friendships that enhanced my time at Timberline and will remain part of my life forever.Best of luck in all your future endeavors and after you leave Timberline, please continue to Build a Stronger Community, a Healthier Environment and a Better World. » Kevin Harrison, Timberline Principal
