Handicapaccessible
making adjustmentsto your home
Many homeowners have found themselves scrambling to make their homes handicap accessible after a sudden injury or illness. In addition, some homeowners have found themselves looking to make adjustments to their homes in anticipation of welcoming elderly, less mobile relatives into their homes.Making a home more handicap accessible can be a signi cant undertaking, but many of the adjustments homeowners must make are small in scale and won’t take long to complete.
EntrywaysPortable ramps are often an ideal for those who only need to make temporary adjustments.Doorways at the most commonly used entryways, including front doors and doors to the bathrooms as well as the individual’s bedroom, will likely need to be widened.
BathroomGrab bars should be installed in bath tubs and shower stalls and next to toilets. Safety treads on the oors of showers and tubs. A hand-held shower head. Portable transfer seats, which enable the wheelchair-bound to transition from their chairs to showers and bathtubs.
Water xturesDisabled persons may nd it di cult to access faucets on sinks throughout the home. Replacing sinks with pedestal sinks can improve maneuverability, but make sure such sinks are lower to the ground than standard pedestal sinks.
ClosetsCreate multi-level closet spaces so individuals can place their clothes at accessible heights. Closet shelves can be lowered and doors can be widened. Consider installing a light inside the closet and make sure the light switch can be easily reached from a wheelchair.

Home repairs are inevitable. Many homeowners who
aren’t adept at home repairs typically rely on
trained professionals when something goes awry around
the house. The following is a breakdown of three of the more commonly called on
home service providers.
These professionals can help maintain your home
An electrician specializes in addressing a building’s or home’s electrical wiring issues, stationary machines
and the equipment related to those machines. Electricians can fix existing issues, but many also can design and install new electrical components and systems. The dangers of working with electrical systems are many. Such danger is one reason why one might want to hire an electrician should an electrical issue arise.

A plumber is a professional whose area of expertise is in installing and maintaining systems for drinking water, drainage and sewage. Many plumbers take years of
training and experience to master the skill of plumbing. People call a plumber when a toilet or sink backs up, but plumbers have far more extensive skills as well. Plumbers
must be skilled in a number of areas, including having an ability to read and understand a home’s blueprints, detect faults in a plumbing system and repair fixtures and systems to ensure a home is safe.
Plumber
Homeowners have increasingly looked to professional landscapers to maintain their home’s exterior and subsequently ensure their property value remains high. A typical landscaper offers his client an array of services, from cutting the grass to raking leaves to more complicated tasks that gravitate toward landscape architecture. A home’s curb appeal has been shown to vastly improve a prospective buyer’s impression of the house, and as a result many homeowners rely on a landscaper to take care of their property. Many landscapers have an extensive knowledge of the science involved in tending to a lawn and how to help it weather the seasons without losing its appeal.

A well-maintained landscape is important to many homeowners. In addition to adding to a home’s aesthetic appeal, a lush landscape can also help increase a home’s resale value. Oftentimes, homeowners without much experience
Tips when hiring a
landscapearchitect
tending to lawns and gardens hire a landscape architect to do the job for them. First-time homeowners on the lookout for a landscape architect should consider the following tips to make the most of that process.
Find someone who is receptive to your ideas and willing to work with your vision.A landscaper should be ready and willing to discuss his or her previous work experience. Ask to see photos of previous work or even local addresses where work was done so you can see the nished product in person.
Some landscape architects will handle the project entirely on their own, while others might subcontract part of the project. Determine who will be performing the project and how the hiring of subcontractors might a ect it.How the project will be paid for is an important thing to discuss. Each contractor might have a di erent fee structure, so you will want the one that’s best suited to you.
A professional landscape architect should have a list of references at the ready for potential customers. When contacting references, be sure to ask how satis ed they are with the nished product and how the project went with regards to scheduling and fees.
Tips!

People fortunate enough to own their own plots of land often choose to fence in their pieces of paradise. Fences serve many purposes: to designate property boundaries, keep pets or children contained in a safe environment, corral livestock, offer privacy or add aesthetic appeal.Being courteous with fence plans is the way to avoid any animosity along the way. Neighbors usually appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. You may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.Explain your case for the fence. It’s hard to protest a fence that is a safety precaution for children. If your neighbor already has a fence, you must ask whether you can connect

your fence panels into the support post on your shared side. Even the most easy-going neighbor could grow aggravated if the fence is put up carelessly or ends up partially on his property. The best way to prevent this is to apply for a new, professional property survey and have property lines indicated with paint or wood markers. Each town or city has different regulations with regard to fencing, so it is important to learn the ropes or hire a contractor who is familiar with the rules. There may be rules about how high fences can be in the front of the home, sides and back. Corner lot properties may have added regulations depending on whether the fence could prove a visual obstruction to drivers.Once all the details are checked, you may have to apply for a fence permit. This way the construction of the fence and finished product will meet safety standards, and the area in which you live can provide consistent quality control. If the
fence is installed by code, there is little chance it will have to be torn down or changed in the near future. Also, doing it by the book means that a neighbor can be unhappy about a fence but not have legal recourse to ask you to remove it.As an added form of courtesy, it is proper fence etiquette to put the “good” side of
the fence facing the neighbors’ yards. That means the side of the fence that doesn’t show the support panels and posts. Remember, it is your fence so you are also responsible for all maintenance of the fence -- on all sides. Just because your neighbor also will be benefiting from your fence, doesn’t mean he will have to care for it.

will need upkeep to look its best.Carpeting that will be in high-tra c
areas, such as halls and entryways, may require the most TLC. Routine vacuuming
is necessary to dislodge dust and dirt particles. But at some point a more
thorough cleaning may be necessary.
Cleaning and maintainingcarpeted oors
VacuumingFrequent vacuuming will prolong the life of the carpet by preventing a buildup of particles inside of the carpet ber that can eventually cause friction and sever carpet bers. Plush carpets will trap dirt more easily than a thinner or less dense carpet, so more passes of the vacuum might be necessary. Overlap strokes in a crisscross pattern to get at dirt at di erent angles.
Treating spillsIt is adviseable to manage a spill as soon as it happens to re-duce the liklihood that it will contribute to a permanent stain. Carefully blot up the spill until much of the o ending item is removed before adding any type of cleaning agent. Test the cleaning product in an inconspicuous area prior to using it on the spill to ensure it will not damage or discolor the carpet.Work from the outside of the stain and move inward to keep the stain from spreading outward. Use a plush, white towel to blot up any remaining moisture and spill.
Steam clean to refreshIf you don’t already own a steam-cleaner, they can be rented. Together with steam, a cleaning solution is usually part of the procedure. The steam and cleaning product will loosen and dissolve dirt and then the dirty remains will be sucked up into a receptacle to be emptied. Steam cleaning is one of the easiest methods of thoroughly cleaning carpeting and reviving it to look as good as new. Many homeowners are quite surprised to see how much dirt can be removed from the carpet by using a steam-cleaner.

Selecting the right furnace for your home requires understanding the various products available. A two-stage heating system could be the right fit in your renovation.Choosing a new furnace and heating components can be difficult. The business has its own terminology, and there are scores of different equipment manufacturers. Therefore, understanding which features make one furnace stand out from another can help consumers make the best possible decision. One factor that will come up as you browse for furnaces is whether to choose a single-stage furnace or a two- or dual-staged furnace. Two-stage furnaces are designed to change the way British Thermal Units (BTUs) of heat are delivered to the home. In a single-stage system, when the thermostat registers a drop in home temperature that requires the heat to turn on, the furnace will produce one level of heat output until the desired temperature is reached. This furnace is designed to heat your home on the coldest days for

Advantages of two-stage heating systems
your climate. In a two-stage system, the furnace provides gradual heat production. In the first stage, which usually operates at around 70 percent of the system’s heating capacity, the system will try to warm the space. On mild winter days or chilly autumn days, the first stage may be all that’s needed. If the home requires additional heating, the furnace will kick into the second stage, increasing the heating power. Some two-stage furnaces not only offer two BTU offerings, but two blower speeds as well. One of the advantages to these furnaces are that the two-stage system eliminates drastic temperature swings, which are common among single-stage furnaces. This can mean the home is more comfortable over a longer period of time. Another benefit is that because the system starts in the lower stage and may operate at that stage more so than in the second stage, the furnace is generally quieter than traditional furnaces. This greatly reduces the initial noise of turning on the furnace at full power.Two-stage furnaces will burn fuel more efficiently and may actually burn less fuel if they spend the majority of the time in the first stage of operation.
