Who We Are

2

CAMP-of-the-WOODS is a year-round Christian Resort and Conference Center owned and operated by Gospel Volunteers, Inc. Jim Hammond is President and Executive Director. Norm Sonju is Chairman of the Board.

Essential Doctrines of the Christian Faith

• We believe in the divine authority of the 66 books of the Bible alone. • We believe in one God, eternally existing in three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.• We believe in the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ in one person with two distinct natures. • We believe that all mankind is lost eternally without Jesus Christ.• We believe in the substitutionary atonement as well as the physical bodily resurrection and ascension into Heaven of Jesus Christ. • We believe that the only way to Heaven is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, apart from any good works on our part. • We believe in the physical return of Jesus Christ, and that everyone will spend eternity consciously and bodily in either Heaven or Hell. The mission of Gospel Volunteers, Inc. is to present the biblical truths of Jesus Christ, develop Christian leaders, strengthen the faith of individuals and families, and promote global evangelism.

Every decision made at Camp reflects one of these four principles. With a rich tradition of service and excellence, CAMP-of-the-WOODS strives to build up the body of Christ through its five ministry arms: Summer Season, Tapawingo, Conference Season, Missions, and LIFT.

Please do not leave any garbage outside after 6:00 p.m. Any trash from the Tee Pee (cups, containers, plates, etc.) should either be disposed of in the Tee Pee or taken to your accommodation and disposed of in the morning. Campers and staff alike are encouraged and inspired to find meaning and fulfillment in a hurting world. Tapawingo has been called “a haven of rest and refreshment” by our campers. It is a place where girls are free to be girls without the pressures and expectations of society. A place where young women have the chance to discover God’s unconditional love for them through Jesus Christ, grow in a deeper understanding of God’s Word and see His best for their lives!

Campers arrive to register at the pavilion on Sunday afternoon at 1:15 p.m. For those dropping girls off at Tapawingo on Sunday, boats leave for the island from the Point. Guests who wish to take a tour of Tapawingo may do so after all of the registered campers have been taken to the island (usually around 3:30 p.m.). You may get a boat number from the Tapawingo staff person at the dock starting at 3:15 p.m. Visitation and tours will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited. The last boat leaves the Marina at 4:00 p.m.

MissionsCamp supports 14 active and 6 retired missionaries, and funds many important projects that will bring the good news of Jesus Christ around the world. Two offerings are taken each week (Sunday morning and Wednesday evening) to support our missionaries. 100% of what is received goes to Missions; nothing is withheld by Camp for administrative costs. Pick up a missions brochure for more information.

Due to CAMP-of-the-WOODS’ commitment to developing leaders, LIFT is offered at no cost to our students. LIFT students are now able to enroll at Cairn University, Houghton College, Nyack College, and Roberts Wesleyan College for college credit.* Students grow through solid teaching from our staff and guest teachers, one-on-one discipleship, challenging outdoor adventures, and many opportunities for outreach and service. Perspectives are enriched and transformed through the two-week cross-cultural mission experiences. The trips this year will be to the Dominican Republic and Ecuador.

*Students are responsible for their own health insurance and must raise partial support for the mission trip. Those who elect to earn college credits are responsible for applicable tuition fees at the beginning of the LIFT semester.

Boat Mooring & UsageAll boats must be New York State compliant.Prior to launching your boat or personal watercraft, be sure that it is clear of all milfoil, zebra mussels, and other aquatic invaders. A scrub and wash down below the waterline with hot water is extremely important before launching. The cooling system must also be flushed.(Sparkle Car Wash is located behind Mountain Market.) Lake Pleasant’s water quality will significantly decrease if any of these invaders enter our waters. For more information concerning aquatic invaders, please contact the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District at (518) 548-3991. The boat launch is open whenever the Marina is open with the exceptions of Saturdays 8:30 - 11:20 a.m. and Sundays before 3:30 p.m. for Tapawingo registration and departure. Boats or trailers may not be parked in the ramp area after launching. Resident Guests may park trailers in the boat trailer lot located on the left just past Bayshore and are to be left there until departure. Associate Members must park trailers off the grounds.

Boat Mooring: Resident Guests may moor powerboats and watercraft along the beach beyond the designated buoy line. Associate Members may moor boats to the left of the swimming area when facing the lake and in front of the Islotta cabins. Guests and Associate Members must provide their own mooring anchors and remove them when they leave. For safety reasons, please moor boats and personal watercraft beyond our orange marker buoys, which are approximately 125 feet from the shoreline.

Personal Watercraft: You must, by law, complete a safety course to operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC), regardless of your age. We call particular attention to the section of the Personal Watercraft Laws for New York and guidelines specific to Lake Pleasant as follows: • No operation of PWC in any inlets or outlets of Lake Pleasant• No operation of PWC in excess of 5 mph within 100 ft of shore, docks, floats, or anchored boats (includes someone fishing at anchor)• No operation within 500 ft of a marked swim area• No operation between sunset and sunrise• No operation in a reckless manner

There are sheriff patrols on the lakes, and fines for violations can be substantial.

FishingThere is good fishing in Lake Pleasant, but everyone 16 and over must have a fishing license, which can be purchased at Tanner’s Outdoor Sports, Route 8, ¼ mile from Four Corners, (518) 548-7705. Spiny water fleas have been recently discovered in Sacandaga Lake, The Great Sacandaga Reservoir, Peck’s Lake, and Stewart’s Bridge Reservoir and no control exists. Please help us keep Lake Pleasant clear of this aquatic invader! They are known to devastate fish populations by devouring important food sources. This pest is not currently in Lake Pleasant, but we kindly ask for your help. By reading the preventative methods below and taking the necessary steps to stop their spread, we can ensure that our beautiful Lake Pleasant stays preserved in its natural habitat. Please help prevent their spread. • Please check equipment, boats and trailers for plants, mud, and organisms and remove if found• Drain all lake water from water craft and bait containers• Clean down rigging cable, fishing line, and anchor ropes with hot water or a 5% bleach solution• Report sightings of spiny water fleas to the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District

Hello Parents,

As Teen Ministry Director this summer, I want to welcome your teen to take part in our program Teen Program this year. This is my fifth year working in the Teen Program and I have personally seen Jesus work through this ministry. I am even more excited to see what He will do in life of your teen this week! I am excited to announce our summer theme as, FORGE: Refining the Next Generation. We chose the word “forge” because we want to provide a place for teens to come to be strengthened and encouraged. Our desire is for your child to come out of our program stronger in their relationship with Christ then how they came in. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17. Each chapel and event is designed with that purpose in mind. Our morning chapels will feature sermons and testimonies from a guest speaker or a member of the Teen Staff. Our sermons will challenge each teen to Know the love of Christ, Grow in their walk with Him, and Show that love to others. In the afternoon and evenings we will offer fun activities and adventures. My staff and I will be leading each event in an effort to further know your teen. Whether it is taking a hike, playing a game of dodgeball, or talking with Teens about their doubts and questions; our staff is committed to fostering growth and genuine faith in Jesus this summer. Each staff member has had ministry training and represents a life worth following, as they passionately follow after Jesus. I look forward to meeting your teen or catching up with them this week!
