    Chapter 1

Dakota was anxiously packing his bags, still amazed atthe fact that he was leaving the next day for a camp that wasnamed after him, had a slogan he created Glad to be inGladwin, and dedicated to his mom. As Dakota finished offfolding his clothes and checking it off his checklist, he looked

at the picture of his mom he had in his room. He couldnt helpbut smile, despite still being hurt from the loss. Dakota pickedit up and told her I miss you so much mom. Please watchover me and dad so we dont mess this up too much. Then helaughed and placed the picture into his bag.

Dakotas dad Leonard Thomas, better known as LeoT., was anxious himself but for different reasons. Leo T. wasgoing over, just one more time, all the permission slips fromthe childrens parents, and the insurance forms, making sure allthe Is were dotted and the Ts were crossed.

Leo T., after he finished looking at all the paperwork,he took a deep breath while leaning back and looking at a

picture of his wife, stating Well, hun, We finally got ittogether. Pray for me, wont you. Then he wiped away atear.

    Chapter 2

Leo T. didnt have to wake up Dakota in the morningbecause Dakota already had his bags sitting up at the frontdoor, and was waiting for his dad to pull out his truck.

After Leo T. pulled out his truck he told Dakota topack it up while he started the fan out call. Leo T. called hisbrother, Keith, waking him up.

    Hello, Keith?

    Yeah.Are you ready?Yeah, whatever.Good, now call Mike.Yeah, alright.

After Keith hung up he looked at the clock and then pulled thebed cover over his head but heard his wife, T.J. yelling at himto get up, so he took the phone and called Mike, but Mikesson, Don, answered instead.

Hello.Hi Don. Is your dad up?Oh hi Mr. Thomas. Yes, my dad is up.

Just then Keith heard Mike yelling in the background, Imwatching Yankee highlights right now. Tell him Ill call Kenwhen its over. So Don said over the phone

My dad saysYeah I heard him. Thanks Don.Youre welcome Mr. Thomas.

Then Keith hung up and got himself ready. After the Yankee highlights were over, Mike went and

called Ken, who answered the phone in a soft, sensual voiceHello.

Why do you answer like that?To irritate you.Well it works.

I know it does.So are you awake? No.Were meeting in a half hour.Sounds like a plan.Okay. Bye.By the time Ken could answer back, Mike had already

hung up. The final call went out to Ron who completed the fanout. After Leo T. got the call from Ron, he and Dakota doublechecked everything before they left for the designated meetingspot, which was the local mall parking lot.

Over at the mall there was about 75 kids and adults.

Some of the adults were crying knowing it would be almost amonth before seeing their children again; one set of parentswere finishing up their reservations to Aruba; where as onemother was on the phone pleading with her husband to comedown and say good-bye to their son.

Leo kept looking at his watch, because the bus wasnow 30 minutes late, and was trying to decide if he wanted tocall the company when he saw a sky blue colored bus withlettering on the side that spelled out Traveling BaptistTabernacle Choir.

Leo T. went walking up to the bus and saw the dooropen , and heard a man in his mid 20s yelling out:Hey dude. Do you think someone can help me find the campgroup Im supposed to pick up today?Leo paused for a second, realizing that the driver had just

pulled up in front of almost 80 people with a stack of bags, answered Hum, yeah, youre here. The driver, looking excited, said Well then, lets get packedup and hit the road.

Leo T., with some reservation, told his group, Wellthis is the bus that will be taking us up to Gladwin, so lets getour things in order, and well soon be on our way,

After all the campers and counselors were on the bus,Leo T. entered it himself. The first thing he noticed was anindescribable smell that emanated inside, which didnt help the

fact that there was graffiti and signatures all over the bus.Right as the bus driver started to take off, Leo T. toldhim, Youre turning the wrong way.Oh, Sorry boss, turning around.

As the bus driver was turning the bus around, Leo T.took the time to introduce himself and all the counselors.Good morning campers. I am Leo T. and I welcome you toCamp Dakota. Most of you already know me, so let meintroduce you to your counselors. First there is Keith, and hiswife T.J. who are bringing their son and daughter, Xavier andRebecca. Then there is Ron and his wife Eve who are bringingalong their son Steven and daughter Rachel. Sitting on the left

side is Ken, and his wife, Roan, who are bringing their sonsNate and John. Then theres Mike, and his wife Marie, whoare bringing along their son, Don. Leo continued, Now that Iintroduced them all, let me tell you who will be bunking withwhom, and who their counselors will be. There will be twogroups: group A and group B. After awhile you will beallowed to make names up for your groups, but for now theywill just be A and B.

Leo T. took out a sheet of paper, and read from it.Group A, you guys have 2 bunks and they break down likethis: Ron is the counselor of A1, and his troop will be Steven,Dakota, Chris, Kirk, and Dustin. Group A2 will have Ken astheir counselor, and his troop is Nate, John, Dennis, Billy andMark.

Leo T. looked over his paper to notice the kids were, for the most part, ignoring him, but he decided to continue.Group B1 will have Mike as their counselor and Don, Arthur,Tony, Pauley, and Timmy will be in his bunk. The final bunkwill consist of Keith as counselor, and Xavier, Jeff, Dave,Bobby, and Jimmy in that bunk.

Leo T. folded up his paper and then went to introducehimself to the bus driver, Hi, my name is Leo T. what is your

name? But the bus driver was in such a deep trance, he didnthear Leo talking to him, so Leo T. tapped him on the shoulder, which got the bus driver to whip his head to the side with his

eyes wide open, and staring at Leo T., so Leo T. startedpointing out the window telling him watch the road! whichgot the bus driver looking back at the road. Leo T. introducedhimself again.

Hi. Im Leo T.Hey, Leo Dude, Im Pat.Nice to meet you Pat, now watch the road.Oh, sorry boss.

Just then, Leo T. saw a doll that had a carved out orange for ahead, which fascinated Leo T. and so he called up his son,Hey Kota! Dakota, who was talking to his best friendSteven, walked up to his dad.

Yeah, dad, watcha need?Check out that thing.Leo T. pointed toward the doll, which brought on a horrifiedlook to Dakotas face. Leo T., staring at the doll isnt it cool,Kota?

No! Its creepy.Oh, come on now.And its ugly!

Just then Dakota turned around, and walked back to Steven. When Leo T. finally noticed his son walking away, he

decided to take his seat, but he noticed Chris sitting near theback with his eyes closed tight, and tears starting to form, sohe walked up to his son and Steven and asked, Do you boysknow him very well? Both Dakota and Steven turned to seewho Leo T. was pointing at, and both answered that they knewhe went to their school, but that they havent talked to him, soLeo T. asked Dakota to go talk to him now.

Chris was remembering the night before and it was asvivid in his mind as when it was happening. He heard theyelling from his dad, So youre a man now, huh? Mistertough guy going off to camp, as if your worth the money Ispent on that place. Chris then thought about his moms

defense of her son, despite knowing the consequences it maybring on, Oh honey, leave him alone. Hell be gone foralmost a month, cant you be nice for once?

So Chriss dad, tossing his wife a look, said, You knowyoure right. Lets give him a toast. Walking up to therefrigerator, he grabbed himself a beer, and then walked toChris, who was kneeling down, and staring off with his face assolid as a rock, which didnt flinch when his dad started to pourthe beer over Chriss head and then yelled at him,Why cant you just leave now, Mr. Tough guy, which gotChriss little sister, Amber, so upset, that she went, grabbed atowel, and tried to give it to Chris, but the dad grabbed her, andcarried her, screaming down the hallway, which finally got anexpression out of Chris, and he ran down the hall after her, butwasnt able to console her, because his dad locked Amber into

her room, then grabbed Chriss arm and dragged him into hisroom, slamming the door behind him, which sounded so loudin Chriss head, that it startled him, causing Chris to open hiseyes, seeing Dakota sitting next to him smiling.Hi, Im Dakota.Chris answered shyly Hi Im Chris.

Dakota offered his hand nice to meet you Chris. Thetwo shook hands, then Dakota got a serious look on his face. Can I ask you something Chris?Chris looked away Yeah, sure, why not. Dakota cautiouslycontinued,I saw you shivering and was just wondering if you were coldand wanted an extra shirt or something. Chris whipped hishead around with a sparkle in his eye, Really, thats yourquestion? Dakota just gave Chris a smile yeah, sure. thenDakota winked at Chris, letting Chris know there was more tothe question, but wasnt going to delve in too deep, too quick.Chris, looking a lot more comfortable, said No Im not cold, but thanks for caring. Dakota just shrugged it off, then sawhis dad walk past the two towards Pat.

Leo T. had to get Pats attention due the trance he wasin yet again.

Pat, I see the graffiti on the bus.Yea, sweet, huh?I dont know if Id say sweet.

Thats cool dude.Watch the road!Oh, sorry boss.So whats the graffiti from?Oh, thats even sweeter.Im sure it is.

Pat looking excited said, I used to drive this bus for a coupleof bands when they went on their world tours. Oh man, thememories.

Leo T looked perplexed Really, like what?Pat just looked at Leo T. I cant think of any right

    now.

Oh, well, hmm, what bands were they?A.K.A. and Uh Dude.Never heard of them.Dude, they rocked!Im sure they did. Then Leo T. asked Pat, Do you think Id know any of

their songs? Pat, whipping back his head oh yeah, totally. All you have to do is hear one of AKAs tunes, and youdrecognize them.

Can you sing one for me now?No. cant think of one right nowOh.But, Uh Dude, Theyre rock solid.Theyre still around then.No they broke up.Oh, sorry to hear that.Inner-band squabbling, yelling, screaming, politics.Leo T. nodding his head thats why they broke up?Oh no. The real reason is real ugly.Oh my, tell me about it.Just then, Leo T. looked out the window, and tapped

pat on the shoulder you just missed the exit. Pats eyes grew

as big as saucers again. Oh, sorry Boss. Turning around.

    * * *

As Pat was getting close to the camp grounds, he hadto drive through the main road that took them through the heartof the city of Gladwin, where they got a glimpse of how rusticand old fashioned it looked.

Pat drove up to the road that the camp was on, and wastold by Leo T. Were almost there, turn left right here. Patnodded at Leo T. and then turned. Leo T. took a deep breathUm, Pat. Your other left.

Oh sorry Boss turning around. That would be nice Pat.Anything you need, Boss.

Good, now watch the road.No problem, Boss.As the bus pulled up to the camp grounds, Kirk was

looking out the window, and mentioned to Leo T. Wow Mr.Thomas this place is fabulous. I love how you have thelandscaping! Plus its so big!

Leo T., a little shyly, told Kirk Well, thats thebuilding Im staying in. You guys are staying in the buildingsover there. Then Leo T. directed Kirk to the other side of thebus which stood four shacks, that had seen better days. Kirksface dropped, Oh! Well nothing a little touch up wont fix.

Leo T. tapped Kirk on the top of his head, thenannounced to the group Well be eating lunch in about a halfhour, so just follow your group leaders and theyll take you towhere your bunks will be, and then feel free to check out thetennis courts, softball field, football field, and the recreationcenter, which is located right next to the kitchen and feedinghall.

After Leo T. made the announcement all the kids gotoff the bus, grabbed their bags, then followed their counselorsto their bunks.

At the sound of a metal triangle that Maria was ringing,

the campers started to pile into the feeding hall, where they sawplates that had 5 kernels of corn on each one. After everyonewas seated Leo T. addressed the campers.

Welcome to Camp Dakota. As you can see each ofyou have 5 kernels of corn on your plates. I just want you allto know this was the ration allowed to the pilgrims while timeswere tough, and I hope you all appreciate everything you have, when compared to how little our forefathers had.

Leo gave a signal to Mike to open up the curtains thatwere behind him, which showcased a plethora of food from hotdogs and hamburgers to potato salad and of course more corn.Leo proceeded to tell the campers As you can see, I plan onproviding for you all the best I can. Of course Maria and T.J.who are not just our cooks but our cooking teachers also askedthat if any one of you are willing to make suggestions they are

willing to take them. After Leo T. was finished with that comment he lookedat his brother, Keith, and they both gave each other desperatelooks, which neither T.J. nor Maria took too kindly to.

After all the campers were finished eating their lunch, and Mikes group was done cleaning up, Leo T. got back up infront of the campers, and addressed them. Now what I wouldlike to do is go around and have all of you introduceyourselves, and well start with my son Dakota. Leo T.motioned to his son, then added Oh, and add the one thingyoure most looking forward to while youre here. Dakota ,with no hesitation, responded, Softball. I cant wait forsoftball. Oh, yeah, as my Dad just said, my name is Dakota. Then he looked to his best friend Steven and told him Okayyoure next!

Steven stood up and told everyone, Hi, my name isSteven, and Im looking forward to playing some football. The next to speak was Keiths son Xavier The name is Xavier,Im gonna like the floor hockey. After Xavier sat downMikes son, Don, kept the introductions going. My name isDon, and its not that Im looking forward to playing softball, but I am anxiously awaiting to be able to coach it. Nate who

was next, looked at Don anxiously awaiting, what are you 50or something? Don just answered Im sorry you feel this..but stopped when he saw Nate was ignoring him, and starting

to stand up. Name is Nate, and Im playing some football.John, who was Nates brother, stood up next to Nate, andraised his hands And I am John and Im going figgity-figgityfishing. which got the campers laughing except for Nate whoridiculed John, Just sit down. No one cares about you, youputz. But John, with a gesture, showed that he didnt careabout what his brother was saying.

Arthur, who was laughing at both Nate and John sawLeo T. motion to him that it was his turn to introduce himself,so he stood up, and did so Hello everyone. Im Arthur, andIm looking forward to playing some tennis. Before Arthurhad time to sit down, Kirk sprung up and started waving his

hands towards all the campers, and over exuberantlyannounced, Hi guys! My name is Kirk, and I just want to tellyou all that Im very happy to be here, meeting you all, andthat Im super excited about participating in the talent show.Jeff stood up and placed his hands onto Kirks shoulders usingsome force to sit him down. Yeah, and Im sure we are allexcited about meeting you too, so sit down, and let me telleveryone who I am, since everyones been wondering itanyways. Then Jeff pointed toward Xaviers sister, Rebecca, and said Especially you, and dont deny it. Jeff then hit hischest with his fist, and stated The names Jeff, and Implaying some football baby. As Jeff was sitting down, Pauley, who was talking to Tony, pushed Tony on the shoulder, andtold him Stand up Tony. who didnt know what was going,so he responded Why, Pauley. forward to doing Tony? Tony, a little startled Oh, Okay, Icant wait to play guitar and stuff. Then Tony flashed a quicksmile, and nodded and winked at Stevens sister, Rachel, which

didnt go over to well with Steven, but made Rachel blush.Pauley looked at Tony and told him as he was standingup to introduce himself Give it a rest, playboy. Thencontinued to the rest of the campers, Hello, Im Pauley, andIm looking forward to music class, and playing drums. ThenPauley sat down, as William was standing up Hey hows itgoing? Im William but you guys can call me Billy. Justthen somewhere from the back, someone called out Oh Billy!but William was unscathed, and went on to say Yep, namesBilly, and I want to get serious about the exercise program theyhave here then he looked around, and noticed Dennis startingto stand up, so he proceeded to sit down.

Dennis stood up making a body checking motion, andtold the group Im Dennis and I cant wait to play some floorhockey. Before Dennis could sit down, Mark stood up, andbumped Dennis out of the way, stating Hockeys fine and allbut cooking, now thats something to look forward too. Markstarted to sit down, but caught himself , then stated his nameOh yeah, names Mark. Then gave off a huge smile.

Sitting next to Mark was Chris, who wasnt smiling atall, and half stood up, and mumbled. Im Chris, and Im justglad not to be at my house right now. And without evenlifting his head from a downward position, he sat right backdown.

Leo T., feeling he needed to keep things going, pointedtoward Tim, and invited him to stand up. Tim stood up andtook a deep breath. Good afternoon everyone. My name isTim, but you can call me Timmy if you want. The thing thatexcited me the most when I read about Camp Dakota, was thefact that there will be hiking here. Tim continued to stand foran awkward second, until Jim stood up, who gave a singlesweeping wave with his hand, and introduced himself, ImJim, and Arts and Crafts sounds really cool Then he sat backdown.

Dave, who was half asleep, was startled when Jim hithim on the arm. Dave just looked at Jim with a mean look andbluntly asked him Whats your damage little boy?! Then

realized he was up in the introductions. Sorry, my bad, hello, hello everyone. I be Dave, and I be looking forward to somedancing. Then he did a quick dance step before sitting down.Bobby, who was chatting with Dustin started to stand up afterseeing Dave sit down, but accidentally knocked down his bugjuice which got Dustin laughing, before the two of them wipedup the table. After Bobby threw away the napkins they used,he told the campers, Hey guys, names Bobby or Bob, and Imlooking forward to seeing what kind of church services areoffered up here. Then he sat down next to a still laughingDustin. Dustin, trying to stop laughing, couldnt lose his grin, and continued to giggle throughout his introduction. Hey

everyone names Dustin, and I love playing video games, and Icant wait for the tournament.Dustin completed the introductions, so Leo T. stood up

and thanked everyone for participating in the introductions, andthen told Mike and his group that they had clean up duty.

After clean up Mike and his group joined with Keithand his group to get some floor hockey practice in. On theother side of the camp grounds, on the football field, was Ronand Kens groups.

John tackled his brother pretty hard, causing Nate tocut his lip, which got John taunting him Ah whats wrong. Are you bleeding? Well drink your blood, its protein!causing Nate to charge John, but it was broken up by their dadKen. Keep it for the game boys. Dont wear each other out. After Kens wife Roan heard that, she hit her husband on hischest. Dont encourage them to hurt anyone. Ken justsmirked, your hand just bounced right off didnt it. So Roangave him a look aimed toward their late night planned event, soKen took the hint, and clapped his hands, then told the entireteam, Neither I or Mr. James want to see any more cheap hits,or attempts to hurt anyone else. Then he turned to Roan andwinked, which was met with a pair of rolling eyes.

As John and Nate were walking off the field after flag-football practice, John continued to taunt Nate. Hey Nate, Ijust realized something. Nate, looking irritated, turned to John

Whats that. You finally reached puberty? John, not evenpaying attention I just realized that youre a Nate. Natestarted to shake his head Youre a real piece of work, youknow that? John smiled Why thank you.

All the campers arrived back at the bunks withinminutes of each other, and all listened to Leo T. announce overthe P.A. system I have to say, I was impressed by what I sawout there today, and want to tell you all good job, and beyondthat, you all know you brought up a musical CD you wouldlike to listen too. I drew a name just a minute ago, and the firstone drawn was Denniss so for the next hour we will belistening to New Edge then we will be having a half hour of

quiet time before dinner is served. Some of the campers weresleeping by the time Leo T. was finished, and most fell asleepshortly afterwards.

At the sound of the metal triangle, moans and groanswere heard everywhere as the campers started to get ready fordinner, and they were rubbing their arms and legs.

The smell of mostacolli and garlic bread was present asthe campers were walking into the dining hall.

    Leo T. asked Dakota to say grace before they begandinner, so Dakota stood up and told everyone to pick up theirforks and butter knives, and to tap on the table as he recited,and they repeated;

    rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub, yeah-yeah God.Amen.

As the campers were eating their dinner, Leo T. andRon went back up to take more garlic bread from the buffet. They both saw that there was only one piece left, so Ron toldLeo T. theres plenty of mostacolli left. Leo T. looked atRon, and, with a concerned look on his face Gee, I wonderwhy? Then continued Was that spaghetti sauce or ketchupon those noodles? Ron, grabbing the last piece of toast, Imnot sure what that was, but the toast was edible at least. Then

took a bite of it as he walked away. While clean up was being performed, Leo T. went out

to the fire pit, and started up the campfire, which caught the

attention of all the campers, so they went out and formed acircle around it.Leo T. stood up when the last camper, Kirk, sat down

and went right into his story. As you all saw on the way up here, theres some

words spray painted on the back of a stop sign that says Edgaris a fig. Well Im about to tell you his story. A few of thecampers started to roll their eyes as a few others looked ateach other shrugging their shoulders One camper wasoverheard saying Edgar doesnt exist. as another said Oh,Billy, Im scared. causing everyone to laugh.

After the laughter died down, Leo T. got a very serious

look on his face and raised his hands, waving them about Oh,but it is true. And you all need to know about him. Then helooked at his brother, Keith, and they smirked at each other.Leo T. looked back at the campers, and started back up Andthis my friends, is the story of Edgar.

Leo T. closed his eyes, took a deep breath, thenpointed towards the woods. Edgar grew up not too far fromhere, and, in fact went to the high school we passed on the wayup here. Well, he went there for a little while, until But Illget to that later. Edgar, you see, was allergic to figs. He wouldbreak out in hives, and his throat would swell up on him, andeverything. Well Edgar was able to keep this fact a secret formost of the school session. In fact, only one other person, other than his family, knew about it, and that other person washis best friend. The two of them got into a heated argumentone day, and, so the story goes, his friend put a little bit of figon top of his cake. Needless to say, Edgar had an attack infront of everyone, and he ran out of the lunch room to see thenurse. For the next couple of days, word got around aboutwhat caused Edgar to have an attack, so, in an attempt to befunny, a lot of the students brought in fig newtons, and wouldthrow them at him, crying out Edgar is a fig, Edgar is a fig.

Leo T. looked around to see all eyes on him, then hecontinued. Edgar ran out of the school, yelling out that hewould get everyone back for what they did. And you know

what happened the next day? Pat, who was looking scared, whimpered out Nowh-what? So Leo T. pointed towardPat Not only did Edgar not show up for class, but neither didhis best friend! Leo T. put his hand on his forehead as he waslowering it, and recited That poor child.

Leo T. took a dramatic pause, then sharply continuedAs time went on, nighttime vandalism was on the rise, andwith Edgar not showing up for school anymore, the onlyexplanation was that it was him, getting his revenge on a townthat scared him so. People, in retaliation, started putting out fignewtons around their houses, as a sign that they were not goingto be scared by him, and eventually yelling out, before closing

up their homes for the night, Edgar is a fig, Edgar is a fig!Leo T. looked around and saw that all eyes were stillon him, so he gave a secret nod to Dakota and Steven beforecontinuing. As time went by, people started to forget abouthim, until one night, one night last week in fact, a young manand lady were walking through the woods, when they sawsomething not quite right. The young ladys report states thatthey saw someone or something moving in the woods, so herfriend turned to her and said watch this, then pulled out acouple of fig newtons, and started throwing them at it. Well, whatever it was, according to the lady, it turned and looked atthem both, which is when she started running. By the time sheturned back around her friend was gone as if he vanished.

Leo T. wiping a fake tear from his eye, looked at thecampers over the now dying campfire, and told them and youknow what it happened Leo T. turned and then pointedinto the woods, and over emphasized the next words Rightover there!

Just then Steven and Dakota starting throwing fignewtons at the rest of the campers, which got some screaming, while others, just laughed, except for Tony, who was lookingaround. I dont get it. Why are you guys wasting cookies?

As he reached for one, and took a bite out of it.After clean up, Leo T. looked in on everyone to make

sure everything was alright. The last bunk he checked up on,

he saw Dakota talking to Chris as the two sat at the end ofChriss bunk. Everything Okay in here Boys? asked Leo T.Dakota looked at his dad and answered Were fine Dad, justtalking. But Leo T. saw a tear running down Chriss cheek,so he asked Dakota again, Is everything okay Kota? Dakotagave a little slowing motion with his hand to his Dad andrestated Were fine Dad just talking. Leo T. pointed atDakotas hand Dont you show me! So Dakota grimaced, sorry Dad I really didnt mean to. Leo T. nodded, Thatsalright I just wanted to let you know Im here if you guys needanything. Then Leo T. wished them a good night, then wentand retired for the night in the house.

Chris shed another tear before he looked at Dakota, apologizing, Im sorry Kota. Did I get you in trouble?Dakota wrinkled his nose No, not at all.. But lets continue.Dakota took a deep breath, then asked, Do you have any goodmemories growing up, Chris? Chris became quiet and staredoff before answering Yes. One. I have one good memory. Then he turned his head looking at Dakota. Christmas lights, and a white church. Dakota, looking intrigued, Tell meabout that. So Chris, looking a little bit more relaxed, began. Our Christmas decorations consisted of a Christmas tree, lights, and a white church that, when wound up, would play themost beautiful rendition of Silent Night Ive ever heard. Well, anyways, my dad would never allow Amber or I to play itwhile he was around, so I would have to wait till he passed out, then I would go wake up Amber, and the two of us wouldsneak down to the tree; then play it over and over again. It wasone of the few times I would see Amber smiling. Under theChristmas lights; it was just a moment my sister and I wouldshare, our Christmas moment as the two of us would call it.Once again Chris looked sad and lowered his head. One day,and I miss her already. Dakota put his arm around Chrissneck and told him, I know, I still miss my mom. Then they

just sat in silence for the next few minutes.Chris, now feeling better, softly told Dakota Well, its

time to get to bed. Then crawled into his own bunk, and

wrapped himself up in the blanket as tight as he could, thenDakota heard Chris recite the words he taught him before hisdad checked in on them; The Lord is my pillow, Hes mycomforter at night. His arms are my sheets, holding me tight. Then Chris mumbled something Dakota couldnt decipher.

    Chapter 3

Leo T. went to wake up his son, but saw that Dakotawas up already waiting for his Dad, so Leo T. asked him, Didyou sleep good? Dakota, looking tired, said Not really. I wastoo excited. Then Dakota asked his dad, Is Mr. King goingto watch the campground while were gone? Leo T. started tolaugh. Mr. King was up an hour before I was. Dakota startedto laugh himself. After Leo T. closed the door, Chris started talking inhis sleep. Please, no more, please stop. And then waswoken up to the sound of Leo T. starting his motorcycle, so helooked out the window, and saw Leo T. and his son ride away.

As Leo T. got into town, he pulled aside, and the twoof them got off the bike to talk.

So, Kota.Yeah, Dad?How do you think things are going?Well, its only been one night.Yes, and?And you havent messed up yet.Yet!Its a long summer Dad, anything can happen.Thats not very positive. No, not positive. Just realistic.Leo T. started to bob his head, then ran his fingers

through Dakotas hair, messing it up, which Dakota duckedaway from, but secretly liked. Leo T. smiled Yourebecoming more and more like your mom everyday. Dakotaliking what he heard, smiled to himself.

Dakota was looking at the restaurant across the streetwhen his Dad asked So are you hungry? Dakota still lookingforward, replied Am I ever not hungry? So Leo T. stood up,brushed himself off, and then asked Want to go there? Itlooks like a nice place. Dakota, crinkling his nose, Really, there why? It looks like a dump. But his dad was persistent.Im not sure. Its like a magnet is pulling me there. So

Dakota gave his dad an odd look. Uhmokay. So heagreed, and the two of them got back on the motorcycle, androde up to the restaurant.

As Leo T. opened the door to the restaurant, theringing of the bell attracted the attention of two elderlygentlemen who were previously arguing over how much of atip to give to the waitress, who was shaking her head. Look, the two of you are in here every morning, and get into the sameargument. You both know youre going to leave a quarter tip,and then argue about if it was too much on your way out. Thewaitress stopped there when she heard the door open a secondtime, which was Dakota walking in. As the waitress turnedaround she saw Leonard and his son standing at the door, which is when she over heard Dakota state, I was right. It is adump! But the waitress ignored the comment, along with the

two older men, to go wipe off a seat at the counter. As she wasdoing so, she was staring at Leonard inviting him by saying,Come sit over here. Its the best seat in the house Dakota, wrinkling his nose Wow. Id hate to see the worst seat theyhave. Leonard, now focused on looking at the waitress Kota,be nice. Dakota looked up at his dad Im just saying, dad.But he realized his dad wasnt listening to him, but staring atthe waitress, which Dakota didnt like.

The next sound heard was the waitress asking So doeither one of you want anything to drink? Leonard startedwalking toward the counter, answering Yeah. Ill take acoffee, and the boy will take grapefruit juice. The waitresssmirked, and softly asked So, do you want a piece of pie withthat coffee? Leonard, smiling

You have pie? What flavor?Best flavor in town.So youre taking about Rhubarb, huh.You better believe it.At that exchange of pleasantries, the waitress turned on

her heels, and poured Leonard a cup of coffee. As the waitresshanded the cup to him, she told him By the way, my name isAmy and I regret to inform you we are all out of sugar.

Then explained You see, my wife died of cancer ayear and half ago, and with the life insurance policy she tookout on herself, she had it placed in her will that I finally openup a summer camp with it, which I did and named it after myson. to go? Apparently she has a job to do. Then waited for aresponse. Leonard sighed Im serious about the job. All youhave to do is come on by. At that, Dakota could be heardmaking a whining noise, until he heard the bell on the door ringwhich is when he saw her walk in. Dakotas eyes were as bigas saucers, and he couldnt believe his ears when he heard hersay, Hi, mom to Amy. Dakota turned on the chair he wassitting on, and grabbed his dads arm, pleading, Dad, makeher take that job. She needs that job! Leo T. oblivious to

what his son was talking about, looked at him, but then figuredit out when Amy introduced her daughter. Leonard andDakota, this is my daughter Isabelle. Isabelle politely noddedher head and said, Hello. Then shook Leo Ts hand. Aftershe shook his hand she extended her hand to Dakota, whostarted to babble, Kota, Im Kota well Dakota, namesDakota. Then wiped off his hand before extending it to her, which made Isabelle giggle.

Leo T. looked at his watch, and realized it was laterthan he thought, so he announced, Well Kota and I have to gonow. Leo T. stood up and waited for Dakota to do the same. After he did so, Leo T. gave a smile to Amy, then turned as hetold her It has been an honor and a pleasure, and walked outthe door. Amy asked Isabelle as they walked to the door,How was your aerobics class hun? Isabelle quicklyanswered while looking out the door, Yeah, it was good. Ihave the entire routine memorized already. mom, same thing you are.Leo T. and Dakota arrived back at the camp just in

time for Leo T. to see some smoke coming from the kitchen.

As Leo T. walked into the kitchen he saw that pancake batterwas all over the place; the eggs were almost unrecognizable, and the smoke was coming from burning sausage.

Dakota headed the other way towards his bunk tochange for calisthenics, but instead walked in on Chris, Kirk,Dustin, John, and Nate all standing next to each other on hisbunk, looking out the window that was over it. ConfusedDakota questioned them. Hey, whats going on around here?John with a giddy look on his face, told Dakota, Werelooking at a figgity-figgity fire baby. Dakota, shaking hishead, what fire, move over, let me see. As Dakota steppedon his bunk to look out the window, Dakota didnt see a fire,

what he did see was a spectacular sunrise, that made thehorizon look like it was on fire from the golden hue that wasreflecting off the atmosphere. The six of them stood there insilence and awe until it was broken up from the announcement,Campers, this is Leo T. instead of getting ready forcalisthenics, just wear your regular clothes, and head for thebus in ten minutes, please. Oh yeah. Im not sure where yourat Pat, And Im confident I dont want to know, but please beat the bus in ten minutes also. Thank you.

Twenty minutes later, after Pat finally got to the bus,the entire camp was on their way. A few people were askingeach other where they may be going, but all Leo T. would tellthem was that they were only going about three miles, and thatthey were going to like it.

Bobby was looking out the opposite side of the bus asthey pulled up to the restaurant and was caught by Arthursmiling. Arthur nudged Bobby kind of hard, which resulted inBobby responding with an Ow. That hurt, you doorknob. SoArthur came back with, Id rather be a doorknob than acowbell. But anyways, whatcha smiling at? Bobby pointed tothe church across the street from where they were parked.Arthur read out loud what the sign said as the rest of the

campers were getting off the bus. Sin is still sin, no matterhow many times you rewrite the Bible. Arthur looked towardthe front of the bus and noticed that Bobby and him were the

last two on the bus, so he gave one last glance to the sign, gaveout a smile himself, then told Bobby, Well time to go.Amy just kept staring at the campers as they filed into

the restaurant. Leo T. waited until Arthur and Bobby were inthe restaurant before entering himself.

Amy caught a glance of Leo T. and had to fight backthe excitement she felt upon seeing him. Leo T. sensed it fromAmy, so he added a little swagger to his walk as he approachedher. So, do you want the job or do we have to come back hereevery morning for breakfast? Then gave Amy a wink.

As Dakota was watching his dad talk to Amy, Isabellesnuck up behind him, and punched him in the arm, which

startled Dakota. Ow, that hurt! But before Dakota couldturn to see who did it, Steve started to laugh and mock him.You wimp, you let a girl hurt you. Isabelle, not waiting asingle second, punched Steve also, which caused Steve to giveout a yelp that was music to Rachels ears. All those years oftormenting me, and finally you see how it feels. Then Rachelreached out her hand to shake Isabelles. Hi, Im Rachel, Imthe sister of the turkey you just hit. Isabelle, feelingvindicated, reached out her hand. Hello, names Isabelle. Then she turned and pointed to her mom. And thats mymom. Rachel turned and saw her mom talking to Isabellesmom. Oh look at that, my mom is the one talking to her. Then the two listened in on what the two of them were talkingabout.

Eve was explaining to Amy everything the job wouldinclude, until Amy made the comment, I have a job here, andthen theres the issue with Izzie. How would she take it?Then Amy looked at Isabelle, who was giving two thumbs upand had a huge grin on her face. As Amy was looking back atEve, Eve stated Ron and I brought up our daughter Rachel;Keith and T.J. brought their daughter Rebecca, and Kens wife;Roan, is here also. Eve could see Amy was still undecided so

I was saying it will all be for free. At that Leo T. put his handon his head, started shaking it and said, Oohhh I think I have aheadache.

Amy took another look at Isabelle who was nowintroducing herself to Rebecca. Then she looked at her bosswho was getting angrier by the minute that Amy wasnt takingany orders. T.J. added, Plus Kens wife Roan is a registerednurse and does a really good job taking care of people.

Amy took a look at Roan who smiled at nodded at her.Amy smiled back and inquired, So Roan has good bedsidemanners? T.J. starting to look excited, Yes she does. Areyou interested then? Amy closed her eyes, then called her

daughter to her. Isabelle, come here please. As Isabellestepped toward her mom, Amy didnt even have to ask Isabellethe question, because Isabelle already knew what her mom wasgoing to ask, and answered the unasked question, Id love togo. Dakota heard what Isabelle said, so with a smirk Youdlove to go, huh? Isabelle raised one side of her upper lip.Duh! But not because of you, you dork. Then turned awayfrom him, making sure to flip her hair as she did so.

If youre going, then go. Get out. That was heardfrom the kitchen as Amys boss finally felt he had enough ofwhat was going on; and then chased Mark and Jimmy awayfrom the front windows, because they were smearing it up withtheir fingers, by yelling at them, oh go on yous. Then wipedthe window with his apron.

Amy took a look around the restaurant, took a deepbreath, which caused her to wince, then made her decision.Ill give it a try, but if anything happens. Amy was unable tofinish her speech because it was cut off by Isabelle. Thankyou mom, thank you! Amy put both of her hands ontoIsabelles shoulders then watched Isabelles eyes roll back, because she knew what was coming next. Now you dounderstand, Izzie, that just because were going to do this,

supposed to lead that, but, well, it just didnt work out.Isabelles eyes lit up. Oh thank you Mr. Thomas that wouldbe sweet. Leo T. was pleased. Wonderful! By the way, youcan call me Leo T. Isabelle lightly nodded, And if you wishyou may call me Izzie. Leo T. clapped his hands together.Sounds great! I think its time to go!

After a little hesitation, and a promise that she wouldbe brought back to her car, Amy got onto the bus, and Patdrove away, which brought on another, Youre going thewrong way Pat. from Leo T. and another response ofTurning around boss.

On the way back to the camp, Kirk leaped out of his

seat and started looking out the other side of the bus to get abetter look at the horse farm he knew they were going to begoing to. Unfortunately for Kirk, he caught the eye of abeautiful, yet spunky, black horse, that locked eyes with Kirk, and started to run the field next to the bus. The horse ran sohard, and snorted so loud, Kirk started to cry out, Black death, black death. That horse is out to hurt me. This was receivedby scoffing and laughing from the other campers, so Kirkroughly crossed his arms, and announced to everyone, Forgetyou guys! Then sulked the rest of the way back to camp.

As Pat opened the door of the bus, Eve announced,All the following campers follow me for arts and crafts:Tony, Arthur, Dave, Pauley, Don, Bob, Jim, Xavier, Jeff, andfinally Timmy. Then stepped off the bus, and gave a sweepingarm motion. Lets go, step to it! Then led the way to theclass room.

The rest of the campers followed Ken to the musicroom, leaving Leo T. and the remaining ladies on the bus. LeoT. pointed toward the kitchen. Thats where youll beteaching. Amy with a surprised look on her face said,Teaching?!?

You never mentioned teaching it.Its how lunch gets done.So what your saying is, what I teach the campers,

thats what we eat for lunch?Well you can do lunch, or have lunch done already.Done already?Yeah, you can get them started on dinner.I dont know about this.Well you will have, lets say, an artistic freedom. The look on Amys face made her daughter laugh and

say to her mom, Sounds like fun. Amy wasnt amused bythat comment, so she told Isabelle, Dont you have a free classto go to of your choosing? Isabelle thought about it Yeah, music sounds nice. Amy smirked, Isnt Kota there rightnow? Isabelle held back her smile, Um I wouldnt

know. Then ran off towards the music hall.As Leo T., Amy, Maria, and T.J. were walking to getthe kitchen prepared, Amy asked What did you mean byartistic freedom? Leo T. kept looking forward; Why thatsthe fun part. You get to choose what to make everyday.Amys eyes were the size of saucers. What do you mean Ihave to choose? Leo T., cowering a little, Im a guy, didyou expect me to be prepared? Amy let out a frustrated sigh.O.K. But prepare yourself. Then she smiled, Because mymeals are going to cost you. Leo T. unflinchingly responded,That wont be an issue. Then Marie and T.J. agreed, Trustus Amy. It wont be an issue.

Back at the Arts and Crafts class, Eve and Ron wereintroducing the material that they would be using, and left it atthat; where as at the music hall, Ken and Roan allowed thecampers to pick the instruments they wanted to learn

Steve, Chris, and Dustin went straight for the guitars, where Nate and Billy showed interest in the drums. Thetrumpets were picked up by Dakota and John, leaving thekeyboards for Mark and Dennis on the bass guitar. Kirk waslooking around and was a little disappointed to see all theinstruments gone. so she tapped Ken on the arm and told her husband, That Kirkis calling for you, and now hes waving both hands in the air. Then she smiled and waved both hands back at Kirk.

As Ken was walking towards Kirk, he remembered hehad one more instrument. You know what Kirk? Kirk alittle flustered by now Did we maybe forget something Mr.Richards? Ken pointed toward the closet Yours is in there. You want me to get it? Kirk, even more flustered, If itdoesnt come out of the closet how am I supposed to play it?Ken, now getting hit by his wife, and then scolded Will youjust get it and stop tormenting him! So Ken opened the closet, which made Kirks face light up, and caused him to squeal, a

tambourine! There was only five minutes left after writing downwhat instrument went to whom; so Ken gave them a list ofsongs for them to pick from for the show at the end of camp. After about a minute of deliberation they come up with TheMen of the High Seas.

As both groups converged into the kitchen Amy didnteven think twice about what she wanted to do, and goteveryone involved with what was being prepared, which waspizza with garlic bread. Every camper had a choice of whatthey wanted to put on them, as long as it was cheese andpepperoni

The campers and counselors alike were shocked andwell pleased with the flavor of the lunch, and looked forward todinner, which was going to be lasagna.

Ron, Ken, and Leo T. led the way to the softball field.Leo T. stopped just short of the field and got Ron tapping hisshoulder. Once, its done, its going to be beautiful. The cutgrass. Fresh bright white lines. Smell of the leather gloves.Sound of a cracking bat. Beautiful I tell you. Then Ron madea fake crying sound which got the campers laughing.

Ron and Kens group arrived at the tennis court asquietly as they could with tennis balls in hand. Then with asilent count down they bombarded the other group with them, and ran back to the bunks.

After listening to some maximum R&B music whichwas Rons choice, the groups piled in and were treated to afabulous dinner of lasagna, bread sticks, and anti-pasta salad.

After the dishes were done, everyone gathered into thenext room, where Dustin was still helping set up the televisionsets and video game consoles.

Dustin loudly told everyone, We will be having avideo game tournament a couple Thursdays from now. Imnot sure if it is 2 or 3 weeks. The dates are on the sign upsheets. If you want to sign up that would be cool, but bewarned Ill be signing up to play video Frisbee, and I am thebest at it. Dustin quickly realized that no one was listeningand started pounding as hard as he could, resulting in Davelooking at him as if he was a mad man, and walking away.

and crafts class, except this time her husband Ron was there tohelp as well.

A few minutes before the campers were released for

cooking class, Mike asked one last time, Okay, the song all ofyou picked is Boys of the Night right? Then under hisbreath, remarked. Which is another song Keith wrote, butthats okay my songs are still good. Then continued after onelast yes from the young budding musicians. So here is the list, there is no changing from here on out. Keith cut in, Yeahthey know, youve told them three times already. Mike, grabbing the Dolphin hat he was wearing and crinkling it in hishand. Yeah I know, but I just want them to know. Keithstarting to hit his hand, They know, now move on with it.Mike now irritated said, Im trying.

    Obviously not hard enough.

Well, I have a list. Then read it.I was about to.But you stopped. No, you interrupted.So.Okay Ill read it now.Its about time.

Mike threw up his hands, which was followed by Keiththrowing up his hands, so Mike roughly read off the list.

Tony, Dave Arthur youre on guitars. Pauley andDon, drums. Bob and Jim you guys picked the trumpets.Xavier I know you and Jeff argued over which one of you willbe on the bass guitar, but Jeff got that one and you gotkeyboards. Xavier looked slightly disappointed, but acceptedit. Timmy, for whatever reasons, you picked the tambourine.Timmy confused asked, Why. Is the tambourine bad? But hedidnt get a response, so he looked at Jim and shrugged hisshoulders. Oh well.

Amy had lunch ready, so she had the camperschopping up vegetables for the tropical salsa that was going togo with the mahi-mahi she had already started to prepare for

dinner. After a lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

with pretzels and a brownie, it was time for some flag football

and floor hockey. The first thing that was heard as Keith and Mike wereleading their groups onto the football field was Mikecomplaining, Its too hot to play football. It should be about40 degrees with some rain. Keith, who was trying to ignoreMike, told his group, Everyone will get a shot at being quarterback, and the best will be selected. Jeff immediatelyinterceded, Its a waste of time to let anyone else even try, Imthe best one out here. Keith tried to respond, but Mikestopped him with a louder voice. Dont you think its too hot.Look at this. The sun shouldnt be out for football. We shouldbe playing baseball. Keith gritting his teeth, No, its not too

hot. Now with you Jeff Before Keith could finish Mikeonce again stated, This is perfect baseball weather. Howcome we cant? Keith was really irritated now.

Were playing softball tomorrow.Yeah, I know, but it should be baseball.Well, its not.You should talk to your brother about that. You know him. If he wantsMike cut him off, Yeah, I know, but why softball?

As the two were arguing, the groups started to warm up, untilXavier saw his dad throw his hands in the air, and Mike yellingOh yea, well come on then! Dad! Xavier called out. What position should I play? Keith looked at his son, Idont know, center, wide receiver, do whatever. Mike walkedaway, which calmed Keith down, but he still kept an eye onMike. Keith looked at the clipboard, Now who was talking tome? Xavier just rolled his eyes.

On the other side of the camp, floor hockey was gettingrough. Ron was pumping his fist in the air, Good check son.Chris, youre looking sloppy tighten up your defense. Kenwas doing some hooting and hollering himself. Good blockMark. Just try to stay on your feet a little more. Ken looked

toward the action. John. Nate. Excellent work. Then helooked at Ron, How come Kirk has his face covered? Ronpointed toward Kirk. I can still see you Kirk. You will get

into this game. Dont worry about that. Just then Chris wentsliding across the floor in front of Kirk. Chris, Ron calledout, Take a break. Kirk, your in! Kirk just winced.

Free time for the campers was filled with classicrock music, which was Rons selection, and slaps on the backfor Kirk who made a game saving goal for his team with hisstomach.

After quiet time, dinner time came around and themahi-mahi was served to an enthusiastic group. It was eaten sofast, that Keiths group, who were on kitchen patrol, got startedwith dishes ten minutes early. This worked out for everyone, since they felt they needed a few extra minutes to get to talent

show practice. After the campers got a feel for the stage they would beperforming on, and came up with ideas for what they wanted todo for the show, they headed out to the campfire.

Amy and Leo T. walked out last, making sure all thecampers were outside. Amy, nudging Leo T. So you dontthink you can tonight? Leo T. sighing said No Im stayinghere tonight because of what happened last night with Billy,Arthur, and Timmy. Amy, wanting to lean on Leo Tsshoulder, but decided to keep it professional for at least anotherday or two, just asked Can Izzie stay tonight? She asked meto ask you. Shes really getting along with Rachel andRebecca. Leo T. was surprised to hear Amy ask that, Ofcourse she can. There is room for like six more in the campgrounds, and Izzie is perfectly welcome to be one of them.Amy, smiling, and looking up at Leo T., said, Your eyes arehazel tonight. Leo T. blushing, just bit his lip.

As the campers were telling stories, and recountingmemories this far into the trip, Eve was explaining to Ron, Ithink it would work. Just think about it. You put a carbonmonoxide detector on a garage door opener. It detects carbonmonoxide. It opens the door. That simple. Ron, scratching his

After the campfire was put out, and Leo T. gave hisgood byes to Amy he monitored the campgrounds for what heknew was going to be a long night.

    Chapter 5

As Leo T woke up he realized he fell asleep outside; sohe scrambled to his feet looking at his watch. Realizing it wastime for calisthenics he started to jog over to the gym, but afterabout 20 seconds, had to start walking.

Leo T. entered the gym and saw the entire group wasdoing jumping jacks, and they all upon seeing him said Goodmorning Leo T. Then some laughing was heard. Ron and

Keith walked by, tapping him on the shoulder shaking theirheads. Leo T. turned toward where they were, but now sawAmy walking towards him. Why good morning Mr. Thomas. How did we sleep last night? Leo T., now more weary thanever, What happened? What did you guys do? Eve, whowasnt finding any of this funny blurted out, Just tell him. Itsno big deal. Leo T. looking around said, You guys aremaking me feel like a true D.P. Stupinski here. So Amycaved in, and then leaned in and whispered in his ear. Leo T.,after hearing what Amy told him, yelled out, I dont snore! You guys are making that up. So Amy pulled out her cellphone. If were lying than who is this on the video? After

examining the evidence, Leo T. handed the phone back toAmy. Thats not me. Then flipped his imaginary hair, andwalked away.

The aroma of ham and bacon from their breakfast wasstill in the air as the groups were either practicing their arts andcrafts, or learning how to play their musical instruments.

In cooking class, Amy had hot dogs already boiling forlunch, and ground hamburger, that she was going to use formeatloaf that night, thawing in the refrigerator. She took thetime to show the campers how she likes her potatoes to be cut,

then went on from there and showed them how to use the deepfryer, and how long it takes to make a French fry to her liking.

After lunch, Ron and Ken led their group to the tennis

courts. Ken started to hand out the tennis rackets, as Ronraised the nets so the campers could play.Over at the baseball field, the first thing Mike said as

he approached it was, You call this a baseball field? Keith, wanting to just read off his roster, shot back, Whats wrongnow?

Are you sure thats 90 feet to first base?Who cares? That pitchers mound isnt high enough!Maybe we can use you to stand on.What does that mean!Youre so concerned with it.

It just needs to be better. Its camp, remember? Camp! Then without letting Mike get in another word, Keith raised hisclipboard, and blew his whistle. Alright, listen up! Thecatcher is Xavier. First is Tony, and Pauley you are in theshort stop position. Bobby, get to third. The outfield willconsist of Jimmy in left, Dave in centerfield, and Tim in right.Don, your designated hitter, so you can help coach the teamalso. Jeff and Becca you two have proven to have the bestarms so you are the pitchers. Mike blowing his whistle, Youheard him, now lets play some softball.

Kens selection of Cajun music filled the air as thecampers were getting washed up and relaxing before dinner.

Eve, Roan, T.J, Maria, and Amy were all in thekitchen, watching Ron, Ken, Keith, Mike and Leo T. set up thetables and chairs.

Roan was the first to finally ask, So what do youthink? Amy, playing shy, asked, About what? Which gotMaria scoffing, Yeah, right, like its some secret. Amy onceagain, I really do not know what you are talking about? Then turned away feeling herself getting a little flush. Look, said T.J. just admit to it, he fell into your lap. Then she

stopped, and realized what she said, and joined in the gigglingof the others. Eve was a little more serious. I dont think yourealize how he used to be. He would have miserable days. I

mean miserable all around. Ever since his wife died, he, Iguess, felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders totry and give Dakota all he could. If it wasnt for Dakota, hemay have went and done something stupid. He used to mope;man it was annoying. He did get himself that job, but it wasntto bury himself in, as far as work goes, so he, as he put it, tooka good look at his son, and finally got on the phone to getCamp Dakota started. So here we are, no pressure on you okayAmy? Then Eve went and turned off the timer that was goingoff.

Amy couldnt keep her eyes off Leo T. the entiredinner and Eve noticed it, so she went up to her, and whispered

in her ear, You see that in his eyes. Its called living, and itsbecause of you. So please, dont hurt him. Then Eve wentand sat down next to her husband. Amy, who started to helpMikes group clear the plates, leaned in and whispered in Evesear, I wont. Which brought a smile to Eves face.

The computer games were loud, and the cheering fromthe campers was even louder which made Leo T. almost cringewhen he had to turn them off, but it wasnt as bad as he thoughtit was going to be. Amy had all the counselors carrying bigbowls of popcorn, and then loudly stated, We cant starteating until TV programs come on, which Leo T. took as hiscue to turn back on the TVs.

After the TVs were put away for the night, and all thepopcorn was swept up, Amy walked up to Leo T. Hi, can wetalk? Leo T., who had just got done saying goodnight toDakota, turned around. What was that? Five? Amy,knowing Leo T knew, answered, No six, but thats notimportant right now. Leo T. cocking his head, Is it about mebeing allergic to tickles? Amy, crossing her arms, No! SoLeo T. put on an over emphasized sad face, Then what is itAmy? Amy reluctantly said, I just wanted to tell you Illnever hurt you. Leo T., looking serious, I know you wont.

Then he brushed her face with his hand, I always knew that.As the lights were turned off, Amy looked over Leo

thumbs up sign. Amy nodded her head toward Eve, Lookslike Eves ready to go. So Leo T. turned around. As he wasturning, Amy started to rub his back, then scratched it whichcaused him to make a purring noise.

Eve, Leo T. and Amy walked out together. Ron waswaiting for Eve outside, so the three of them wished Amy agood night.

    Chapter 6

Rachel, Rebecca, and Isabelle were coming out ofcalisthenics and heading back to their bunks when they sawAmy pull up outside the kitchen. Hi mom! called outIsabelle, whatcha doing? Amy, walking to the back of thecar, waved the three girls over. Since two of the groups aregoing fishing, I figured Id pick up some lemons from thestore. Isabelle, Rebecca, and Rachel all took a box of lemonsfrom Amys trunk and helped carry them in. Rachel askedAmy, Ms. Amy. Whats for breakfast? We were on our wayback to the bunks to get washed up, and havent smelledanything yet. Amy, pointing to the bowls that were on thecounter, were having bowls of oatmeal Rachel. Then Amythought about it, But not to worry. I have so many differentthings to put into it, you wont even know what it is. Rachelwrinkled her nose, Okay. If you say so. Then Rebeccastated, I actually like oatmeal. Amy was pleased to hear that,Cool.

Steve, Dakota, and Dustin were walking into thekitchen for breakfast and kitchen patrol when Dakota sawIsabelle and smiled. Isabelle caught a glimpse of Dakota andstarted to turn which is when she noticed, Ahh! You havedimples. Dakota, with a look of shock. No I dont, and triedto stop smiling, but the more he tried the bigger his dimplesgot, so Isabelle took her two index fingers and put them onDakotas cheeks. Oh yes you do! Then Steve and Dustinjoined in by mocking Isabelle. Oh yes you do, in reallysqueaky voices, until they were chased off by Rachel andRebecca.

Dakota turned away from Isabelle as she continued toput fingers onto his cheeks, which exposed his back to her soshe started to tickle him. Stop it, stop it now! screechedDakota over his laughter then he added, You know Im

allergic to tickles which caused Isabelle to pause, but for onlyfor a moment, then she started back up again, Ill give youallergic to tickles.

Chris and Kirk walked into the kitchen, catchingIsabelle tickling Dakota. Kirks eyes lit up, Oh how fun! CanI join? But Chris somberly reminded Kirk, We should beginmaking the oatmeal. The bowls are already out. Kirk nowfrowning, You party pooper. Then stomped to the counter

After the morning prayer, Ron, Keith, Mike, and Kengave instructions to the campers on where they would be goingon the hike. What kind of fish to look for on the fishing trip, and how much to pack for each of them.

Everybody, including Rachel, enjoyed the oatmeal. Some had strawberry, as others had maple and one, Kirk, putchocolate chips into his.

After the bowls were taken away, Ron and Ken tooktheir group through the woods and Mike and Keith took theirgroup fishing.

During the hike, Billy asked Ron if he could sit andrest for a minute. Since it was not a dense part of the woodsRon said that he could, and continued on to tell Ken, who wasleading the group. Less than five minutes later, Billy camejogging back up to the group telling Mark how he had justencountered a deer.

Hey Mark, guess what?Tired and irritated Mark asked, What now?I just saw a deer.Oh really, where?Pointing to the left, right over there.I dont see anything.Well I saw it.Im not saying you didnt.Running up to Ron, Billy asked Mr. James.Yes Billy? he replied as he continued to walkMr. James, Are there any deer in these woods?Ive never seen one. Ron then asked Ken, Hey

Ken. Have you ever seen any deer up here? Ken answered,

    47

No never.Ron looked at Billy, Mr. Richards, and I have never

seen one. Why do you ask Billy?

I just saw one back there.Looking around, Ron said, Im sure you did Billy, Ibelieve you. Billys jaw dropped, But I did see it!

From the back Billy heard Oh Billy, we all believeyou, now keep walking. coming from Steve. So Billy stayedquiet the rest of the hike.

Over at the lake, Keith and Mike were showing Jimmy,Jeff, and Bobby what to do, and how to set up their lines, sincethey had never been fishing before. Tony and Pauley were thefirst two to get their lines into the water, since the two had beenfishing together with Tonys dad for what was going on eightyears already.

It was about fifteen minutes before anyone got a bite, which was Pauley. As soon as Pauley felt it, he immediatelystarted to reel it in, and had the first catch of the day reeled in,in under ten seconds.

Over the next half hour, Don, Arthur, Tony, andXavier all had caught fish, which were all relatively small, about a pound to a pound and a half each. Then to everyonessurprise, Jimmy felt a tug, but he figured it was just snagged onthe seaweed, until he saw some fluttering at the end of his line,so he started to reel it in. It was tougher than it looked.Everyone started cheering Jimmy on. It was a battle of managainst beast; Boy versus fish; and to Jimmy it was a battle forthe ages. All two minutes of it. Dave was heard behind Jimmysaying, Thats gotta be at least a six pounder. But to Jimmyit felt like a hundred pounds.

Take it easy Jimmy. said Mike, Nice and slow. But Jimmy pulled too hard and his line snapped on him, andthe fish got away. Jimmy let out a huge sigh ofdisappointment, but was still excited over almost getting one.

Looking at his watch, Keith announced Too bad aboutthe fish Jimmy; you gave a nice try. Its time to get goingthough, so everyone pack up their stuff and lets head on out.

Dont forget we got our first football game this afternoonagainst group B, so just relax on the bus, take it easy duringlunch, and give it all you got on the field. After packing up

the bus they took off. Just after leaving, Keith called up,Hum Pat?What! Again?

***By the time they arrived back to the campsite, they

were fifteen minutes late for cooking class. As the grouphurried up into the kitchen, they caught a glimpse of all theapple pies being put into the ovens, which were the dessertsthey were having after dinner.

Billy saw Jimmy, walked up to him and made thecomment, Too bad you werent here to see Ms Amys secretingredient, which is supposed to make these pies out of this

world, as she puts it.Oh really? What is it?Cant say, its a secret. Will I like it?Its pie. Youll like itJimmy, smiling Sounds good enough for me.Billy then asked so how was fishing?

Jimmy smiling even bigger, Oh it was really cool. A bunch offish got caught. But mine, which was the biggest, somehow itgot away.

Got away, huh?Jimmy replied, Yeah but it was four times as big as all

of the others.Sarcastically, Billy said to Jimmy, Sure it was. then

walked away. Jimmy, a little confused on why Billy wasacting that way, just took a nice deep breath in, taking in all thesmells a fresh baking apple pie gives off.

After lunch, everybody headed out to the football field. The counselors carried the equipment, as their wives werecarrying water and chairs; except Roan who was luggingaround extra bandages and cold compresses.

Nate was the first one on the field and was stretching

out and doing a light jog as well as doing some taunting ofteam B. Their gonna have to get you body bags when weredone. That made Nates dad Ken smile, which Roan saw, so

she hit him in the chest with her hand, Ken, laughing said Stilljust bounces right off doesnt it. Roan, not missing a beat,Next time itll bounce off your head. At that Ken and Ronmet Mike and Keith at midfield and flipped a coin to see whowould be kicking off first. Mike and Keiths team, Team B,won the toss and so the game began.

Jeff ran onto the field after their receiver Don ran itback about seven yards for him.

At the first snap, Nate, Dakota, and John illegallysacked Jeff, and took him down like a pack of marauders. Natestrained as hard as he could to flagellate towards Jeff, but onlywas able to give off a little bit; not being deterred by that, Nate

replied, Hey look at that, I flagellated Yeah, cause I cansmell it. Which Jeff didnt take too kindly to, and tried to runtowards Nate, but was held back by Arthur who was tellingJeff, Dont worry about it, I guarantee that will be the lastsack they get on you. Just use that anger to focus on the playsmore and well kick their rumps.

Arthur walked back off the field, unable to playbecause of his knee, and Jeff calmed down and went back toplaying his quarterback position. Jeff picked apart Team A,and victoriously came out of the game with a 28 to 7 score.

Back at the bunks, Leo T. announced over the PAsystem how much he enjoyed the game played that afternoonand gave a few words of encouragement to keep up the goodwork especially since they would be playing each other insoftball the following day, and that he wanted to see just asmuch put into that, as he saw today. Leo T. then announcedthat their first surprise night was going to require a bus ridewhich was going to depart just after dinner, and to make surethey had everything they needed at dinner so they could takeoff as soon as possible. The last two things Leo told hiscampers was the menu, which was barbeque ribs with corn andcoleslaw, then the apple pie for dessert. Dakota won the draw

replied, Im sorry. And then proceeded to pet his first dog inover seven years ever since the incident. After everyone had seen all the puppies they wanted to,

they walked to the general store to pick up a treat forthemselves for the bus ride back to the camp.

    Chapter 7

John was the only one excited about going fishing, and

    52

it was the only thing he would talk about all throughcalisthenics and breakfast. Everyone else was anxiouslyawaiting the opening day ceremonies of the softball game.

The hiking felt long and treacherous, and the fishingwas boring despite John catching four fish in the allotted time.Back at the camp, Amy, in the spirit of the game,

prepared hot dogs with bags of potato chips, and three types ofsoda pop; cola, crme soda, and ginger ale.

A tear came to Leo Ts eye when he saw the field withthe freshly cut grass, brand new chalk lines that would indicatea fair ball from a foul ball. The American flag gracefullyrippling towards left field with the Camp Dakota flag directlyunderneath it. The bases were a dazzling white, and the hiredumpire was brushing off home plate.

Leo T. was carrying a box, and placed it down by

Team As dugout. He opened up the box, and inside wasbaseball caps; half were maroon, and the other half were agolden yellow. Leo T. looked around and asked if they hadcome up with names for their teams, and which color each onewanted. Keith and Mike walked up, and Keith said Well takethe golden ones since our name will be the Camp DakotaGolden Hawks. Leo looked at Keith and Mike and wasimpressed at what he heard. Leo turned to Ron and Ken andasked if they had a name. Ron gathered his team around andhad a quick discussion with them and Ken. Ron looked at Leoand told him, We decided on the name, Camp DakotaLowenharts. Leo stared at Ron and asked, Going Germanhuh?

We figured why not.Leo then asked Your team knows it means lion hearts

then?Yes they do.As you say it; so shall it be, commented Leo.After all the hats were distributed, the Golden Hawks,

whom won the toss, opted to take the field first, whichfollowed Rachels rendition of God Bless America.

In the first three innings, Becca dominated, but because

of Rons rule of not swinging at the first pitch, Becca got tiredsooner than she expected. In the fourth inning Billy andDakota each got a hit, the first two for the Lowenharts, but still

didnt score. The bottom of the fourth wasnt as productive forthe Golden Hawks. They added only one run, making thescore 8-0. The fifth inning is when the Lowenharts came tolife. Isabelle and Rachel led the pack with two hits each, andboth Nate and John got homeruns. In the bottom of theseventh, the final inning, Xavier and Don mustered up a hit apiece which put them on first and third, but Dustin got Pauleyto strike out, and Dave to hit into a double play, ending thegame with a score of 10-8 for the Lowenharts.

Half the camp fell asleep after the softball game, despite the riveting music coming from Keiths own personalmixed CD of movie sound tracks.

The dinner triangle, that Maria rang, woke everyoneup. As the camp was piling in they were told to just go andgrab a plate and help themselves to the fried chicken, mashedpotatoes with gravy, peas, and garden salad. After Bobby ledgrace, everyone filled themselves to capacity, and onlycomplained that there wasnt anymore left to take back to thebunks.

As the campers were getting their final practice in forthe talent show, the counselors and their wives were setting upthe chairs; adjusting the lights; and making sure themicrophones were all working.

Eve was the master of ceremonies this evening, andintroduced all the acts as they came along. There was a magicact; some juggling; a scene from a movie; and a comedyroutine among other acts, but the most impressive one camefrom Pauley and Tony. They created a scene with their music.Pauley turned on a small fan behind a large white sheet, just asblue and green lights were turned onto them, making it lookvaguely like an ocean. Pauley then turned on a tape player thathad the sounds of waves crashing against a shore, then satdown in the middle back part of the stage, just in front of thesheet with bongo drums. Tony walked out with an acoustic

guitar and spoke these words, As I walked to the shore, I satdown just beyond its reach. He then sat down on the stageand continued with, I stared out and wondered about life, and

what I have done in the past. What I plan for the future, andwhat it all means. I know I may never get the answer, but Imalright with that. At that, Pauley started a soft, slow, melodicbeat that got everyone clapping along. Tony started strumminghis guitar and sang with, a velvety smooth voice, a song titledOcean Rain.

Sitting at the ocean, waiting for the rain to come,Sitting at the ocean washing my sins away,Sitting at the ocean, praying that the Lord would see,Realizing he was there all alongOcean Rain, cover me. Ocean Rain, set me free.Tony sang these lines twice, then the lights turned

down, leaving nothing but the sound of the waves crashingagainst the shore.Everyone applauded loudest for them, and patted the

two of them on their backs as they came from the stage.Everyone helped clean up and put everything away except forthe musical instruments that were used throughout the night.Leo told the campers to let those be.

Ken and Roan walked their sons Nate and John alongwith the rest of the group to their bunks, while Mike and Maria, walked Don and their group back to their bunks for the night.

Keith and T.J. told Xavier he could stay behind whileshe took Keiths group back to the bunk; as did Ron and Evetell Steven and Rachel that they could stay up after Ron tookthe rest of his group back to the bunks.

Amy walked up to Leo, who was tuning the guitar, andasked Do you want me to take Izzie to her room or no? Leoglanced at her and answered Its up to you hun, but Idactually like it if its alright with you, if she stayed for theshow. Amy, smiling because she liked it when he called herhun, asked another question, I heard a rumor about you andthe others. Leo jumped in. Its all lies. Then winked at her.Amy persisted. So it is true about what you used to do. Leo
