CAMIGUIN

• In the northern tip of Mindanao lies the pear-shaped volcanic island-province of Camiguin. Camiguin is the smallest province in Northern Mindanao, with its land area of 29,187 hectares. It is approximately 90 km north of the Cagayan de Oro City.

• Cool climate is attributed to vegetation and natural springs, daytime temperature averages at 26.9 °C. December, January, and February are the coldest months.

Page 4: Camiguin (bitangcor, banaag, torres and cayasan)

• Katibawasan Falls - Located 5 km. (3.1 mi) southeast of Mambajao, the beautiful Katibawasan Falls cascades 250-foot (76 m.) down to a pool surrounded by orchids and ferns.

• Ferrabrel Beach Resort - it is an environment with disturbed grassland adjacent to a semi- forest type

• Camiguin Walkway - it is an environment with diverse trees and different fauna

• Ardent Hot Springs - wisps of steam can be seen rising from the running waters heated up by the cauldron of Hibok-Hibok, the most recently active of the seven volcanoes on the island.

• Sunken Cemetery - was originally a cemetery that was part of Camiguin. During Mount Vulcan's third eruption in 1871, the town of Cotta Bato and its cemetery was buried under the sea. When Mount Vulcan erupted again in 1948, the cemetery was pushed 20 feet deeper. Because the cemetery could not be located, a large cross was built in 1982 on top of the solidified lava to mark the location of the graveyard

CONCLUSION• In the sampling of the five sites, 26 animal species and 17 plant species were

collected. Out of the five sites, Ferrabrel Beach Resort has the most number of species, 18 animal species and 3 plant species. Adjacent to the beach is a grassland and a semi forest which explains why Ferrabrel is most diverse. All three spiders were found in the area. Spiders live in almost all habitats except in polar regions, the highest mountains and the oceans. The diverse tree species of the area is home to most spiders in the area. The beach prevents the spiders from dehydration as they need moist environments. Spiders should be conserved because their webs are wonders of natural architecture. They have major ecological and agricultural roles as killers of insects. Both their venom and silk are being used in medical research (stroke treatment) , pest control (insect specific pesticides) and fibre technology (transgenic biosilk production)

• Walkway is the most fern species rich site. Fern species live in a wide variety of habitats, from remote mountain elevations, to dry desert rock faces, to bodies of water or in open fields. There are four particular types of habitats that ferns are found in: moist, shady environments; crevices in rock faces, especially when sheltered from the full sun; acid wetlands including bogs and swamps; and tropical trees. Walkway characterized by its diverse trees, makes fern live abundantly. Seventeen species of ferns were collected in all five sites.

Page 22: Camiguin (bitangcor, banaag, torres and cayasan)

• Two butterflies were collected, one in Katibawasan and the other in Walkway. Butterflies can flourish in several different types of habitat, such as wetlands, meadows, wood's edge, rainforests, and even an urban garden. Unfortunately, many natural butterfly habitats are being destroyed by the elimination of weeds and native grasses from yards, chemical pesticides, parks and roadways, as well as the deforestation of tropical rainforests, the native habitats. This may be the reason why only two butterflies were found during the sampling. Unfortunately, the group has only identified one butterfly. Pieris rapae is a small- to medium-sized butterfly species of the Yellows-and-Whites family Pieridae. It is also commonly known as the Small Cabbage White. It is widespread across Europe, North Africa and Asia and has also been accidentally introduced to North America, Australia and New Zealand where they have become pests on cultivated cabbages and other mustard family crops.

• In sites adjacent to the sea, limpets of Order Patellogastropoda and crabs were found. Patellogastropoda have flattened, cone-shaped shells, and the majority of species are commonly found adhering strongly to rocks or other hard substrates, looking like little bumps on the surface. Many limpet shells are often covered in microscopic growths of green marine algae, which can make them even harder to see, as they can closely resemble the rock surface itself. The majority of limpet species have shells that are less than 3 in (8 cm) in maximum length and many are much smaller than that. Crabs are found in all of the world's oceans, while many crabs live in fresh water and on land, particularly in tropical regions. Crabs vary in size from a few millimetres wide, to a leg span of up to 4 metres (13 ft). Both crabs found in Ferrabrel and Sunken cemetery were very small.
