This project followed on from the first Phase of works that we undertook for BAM which involved soft landscaping around a new multi-storey staff car park which was required to free up land for the new CAMHS unit. Working closely with the site management team and design team we were employed to undertake both the hard and soft landscape works to the new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Unit.

Works commenced with the construction of two internal courtyards which were only accessible through the building. To ensure the works to the main building remained on programme we were given two weeks to complete each courtyard. A total of 58 linear metres of brick edging,

552m2 of paving slabs, 470 No. timber sleepers, 48m2 of Tegula paviours, 16 No. timber benches, 2 No. timber bins, 6m3 of concrete, 16 tonnes of type 1 sub-base, 30 tonnes of sand and 16 tonnes of topsoil were imported through the building into the courtyards using mechanical

tracked carriers and wheelbarrows.

The central area of each courtyard was originally to have been

surfaced with coloured macadam but given the complexities of access and the proposed end use we suggested the use of rubber safety surface which the client duly instructed.

As a late instruction were also asked to install all the earth rod boxes

within the courtyard areas

Log walls were constructed to form raised planted areas and the

perimeter of each courtyard was paved with Marshalls Saxon slabs. A chess board feature was created using coloured paving slabs in one

courtyard and a concrete table tennis table was supplied and installed in the second courtyard.

Works to the main site involved the supply and laying of 165 lm of brick

edging, 380m2 of Marshalls Saxon pedestrian paving slabs, 300m2 of Marshalls trafica Conservation slabs

and 67m2 of Marshalls Tegula paviours.

Three circular paved feature areas were constructed using cobble mosaic roundels as a centre piece

with Tegula paving set around them.

52lm of hardwood timber log walls

of varying heights were built using Woodscape hardwood retaining wall

components and softwood timber sleepers were used to form four raised allotment beds.

7 No. bespoke Woodscape circular picnic tables with benches to suit

were installed into paved areas and 10 No. Woodscape hardwood benches were installed along with 4

No. Woodscape hardwood litter bins.

A brick amphitheatre was built along

with a brick barbecue and a garden shed and greenhouse were sourced

and installed.

A cycle shelter and 5 cycle hoops have been installed and following a late

instruction, stainless steel handrails were fabricated and

installed along the top of a retaining wall and steps.

With the advantage of having control of all the hardworks elements, the softworks were

undertaken as the hardworks progressed.

A total of 1400 tonnes of topsoil was imported and spread and in excess of

2000m2 of turf supplied and laid.

Over 30 No. extra heavy standard and semi-mature trees were planted along

with 3000 No. shrubs all of which were mulched with

bark.

Having achieved completion on time we were extremely

pleased to have had no snags to address.

All landscaped areas are now being maintained for twelve months by our own in-house

teams.

“Landcraft have recently completed the hard and soft landscaping contract on the £12.7M new build Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, for BAM Construction Ltd.

Landcraft have performed excellently on the project, having met all programme requirements with a skilled, sizeable, own workforce which allowed quick reaction to weather-related progress opportunities.

The quality achieved on the external works are very high with self-snagging of finishes as Landcraft’s works progressed, culminating with their contract works being delivered with zero defects at project handover to the client.

The integral maintenance capability offered by Landcraft resulted in them taking the required level of care with the soft landscaping during the latter part of the contract period and following handover.

All in all, Landcraft have been a pleasure to work with and have delivered an excellent end product of which the Client and BAM are very pleased. So much so, the project has been entered for the ‘Building Better Healthcare Awards – Best

Landscape External Space’”
