Cambridge High School is a quality co-educational school founded in 1883 and dedicated to providing the highest quality of education for its 1300 students. We welcome students from overseas and have done so since 1989. We have a highly trained teaching staff, modern facilities and high standards of discipline and behaviour.Our school offers a full academic programme preparing students well for University and Institutes of Technology. A wide range of sporting and cultural activities are also available.We provide a full English Second Language programme leading to University Entrance and we are an approved City-and-Guilds (London) ESOL testing centre. Students regularly achieve success in IELTS AND TOEFL examinations.Our International Student Manager and Dean are responsible for the management of the International Student Programme and ensure that international students’ academic progress and welfare needs are met. Our Homestay Co-ordinator manages our homestay programme and provides the link between the student’s family, New Zealand family and the school. Students are placed with Cambridge homestays and cared for as part of the family. Every homestay family is assessed, which includes Police Vetting, as to their suitability by the Homestay Co-ordinator before any student is placed with a family. The Administration Officer assists students with their visa, medical insurance and claims, doctor and dental appointments and management of their accounts held on behalf of the student. Cambridge is a small, prosperous, rural community close to two major cities and their Universities and Institutes of Technology. Hamilton city is 15 minutes drive by car, and Auckland Airport is one and a half hours drive by car. ELIGIBILITY FOR HEALTH SERVICES: Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available though the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz.

ACCIDENT INSURANCE: The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may be still liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz.

MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE: International students must have appropriate current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. A copy of the Uni-care policy is available in your language on their website www.uni-care.org/inboundtrans.html

We strongly recommend that where possible, you use a local Education Consultant to help get your visa. A list of Consultants and Agents is available at the New Zealand Education Service Centre at the New Zealand Embassy or High Commission. The consultants will deal with all the paperwork for you and will be in constant communication with us.

You can obtain a visa without using an agent by corresponding direct with the school.

1. Apply to the school on the official International Student Application Form ensuring you complete all sections and that your parent(s) signs it. Enclose with your application your latest school report and public examination results.

2. If your application fulfils our criteria, we will reply reserving a place for you.

3. You will then be sent an “Offer of Place” form. Take this to your nearest New Zealand Embassy/High Commission and get an application for a visa.

4. When you have supplied all the correct documents you will be approved for a visa. You must then send the school fees to us by either registered mail, courier or telegraphic transfer.

5. After receiving the fees we will fax a copy of the receipt to the Visa office in your country and mail the original to you.

6. The Visa Office will issue you with a Student Visa. As you pass through Immigration on your arrival in New Zealand this will be converted to an electronic Student Permit .

Criteria for acceptance as a Cambridge High School Student

Students will need to:

• Have a genuine desire to learn

• Show that they have a good record of attendance at their previous school

• Provide information about their ability and progress at their previous school – the student applying needs to provide their latest school report

• Sign the Oath agreement to abide by all of our school rules

• Accept the conditions of the homestay programme as determined by the Board and staff of the International Student Department

Attention should be given to conditions that apply to fee-paying students, in particular the Refunds and Oath Policies.

At Cambridge High School we DO NOT permit students to own a car and/or drive while they are studying at our school. It is in the student’s best interests that they do not drive.

Pocket money must be limited; we recommend about $NZ50.00 per week.

Refunds will be made only after costs and expenses have been deducted as outlined in Refunds Policy.

Cambridge is a majestic tree-lined town with a population of approximately 16,000, on the banks of the Waikato River and is known as the ‘Town of Trees’.

Cambridge is one of the few towns in New Zealand that boasts a star studded array of sporting stars of world acclaim in their events such as rowing, cycling and horse riding.

Known for thoroughbred studs and stables, Cambridge has produced many champion horses in the sports of racing and showjumping and have brought a great deal of international recognition to the district. Studs include: Cambridge Stud, Chequers Stud, Blue Gum Lodge, Trelawney Stud and Windsor Park Stud.

Notable Cambridge hero is equestrian double Olympic Gold medal winner Mark Todd. Lake Karapiro, recognised as one of the premium rowing lakes in the world, is close by, producing world champion rowers, including Rob Waddell, Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell, Mahe Drysdale, James Dallinger, Nathan Twaddle, Duncan Grant, Carl Meyer, Hamish Bond and Eric Murray. Olympic Gold Medal cyclist Sarah Ulmer also lives and trains in Cambridge.

Antique shops and art galleries are a major attraction in Cambridge and are noted for their quality, and attract serious collectors from all over New Zealand.

On the doorstep of Cambridge is the world renowned Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust - a wildlife sanctuary open to the public, where you can enjoy the endangered flora, fauna and wildlife such as the tuatara, kiwi and kakariki.

The Waikato

Hamilton is New Zealand’s largest inland city and the fourth largest urban area and only 20 minutes away from Cambridge and is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. 1.9 million people reside within 160km of Hamilton i.e. around 46% of New Zealand’s population.

With New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato, flowing 16kms through the city it is a very picturesque city with a mild climate which keeps the 135 parks and 58 sports areas very green and lush.

Hamilton central city is a hub for shopping and dining with many cafes catering to all tastes and cultures. The Base one of two main shopping malls offers 68 stores with over 49,000 square metres of retail trading space and the Waikato’s only outlet mall with major retailers. A contemporary open air environment at The Base provides residents and visitors convenience and variety shopping.

If culture is your passion, take a walk to the south end of Victoria Street (main street of Hamilton) to the Waikato Museum of Art and History and indulge.

If you revel in the great outdoors, Hamilton has many parks and walkways. With the Waikato River running through the heart of the city there are many pretty walking and running tracks along its length. A must see for all gardeners is Hamilton Gardens - a floral picture with many wonderful plants and themed gardens. Hamilton zoo has become one of New Zealand’s finest with a large range of animals such as tigers, zebra, giraffes and wildlife.

Hamilton hosts the New Zealand round of the international V8 Supercars motorsport street race held over 3 days; also the WRC World Rally Championships, the NZ Agricultural Fieldays - the largest agricultural exhibition of its type in the Southern Hemisphere and the RipCurl Surf Classic at Raglan. The city is also home to ‘Parachute’ one of the largest Christian Rock music festivals in the world.

Hamilton’s location is close to two main sea ports (Auckland and Tauranga), four State Highways, a strategic railway junction, the Auckland International Airport (just over an hour away by road), the South Auckland industrial base and the Hamilton International Airport.

RationaleFrom time to time, international fee paying students may need or desire to withdraw from their course before completion of their intended study programme.

PurposeThere is a need to ensure that an appropriate level of refund is made, which is fair to both parties and recognises the current and ongoing expenses incurred by the Board of Trustees.

Guidelines

1. In order to be eligible for any refund the student, parent or legal guardian shall apply in writing to the Board of Trustees explaining why they have withdrawn from their course.

2. The Board of Trustees may consider the special circumstances of the withdrawal, but shall ensure that the costs and commitments are funded before approval of a refund.

3. Except in exceptional circumstances, no refund is payable to a student who withdraws in the second half of his/her course. In the case of a full year student, the second half of the course commences on the first school day of Term 3.

4. No refund will be made to a student who is expelled or excluded by the Board of Trustees.

5. No refund will be made to a student who transfers to another educational institution.

The guidelines of what refund you can expect are laid out below:

(A) STUDENT ENROLS BUT FAILS TO ATTEND ON COMMENCEMENT DATE. Fees will be refunded less an administration charge of $1000.

(B) STUDENT ATTENDS SCHOOL AND WITHDRAWS BEFORE THE END OF FIRST TERM. Fees will be refunded as below:

(i) If you move out of your homestay before the end of your contract the portion of your homestay fees not already used will be returned to you. The annual homestay placement/welfare fee of $250 cannot be refunded.

(ii) To have your homestay fees returned, you must have completed the leaving process at school and given two weeks notice to the homestay co-ordinator or pay two weeks fees in lieu of notice.
