The North EastDockyard Tower was originally builtto accommodate officers and menwith storage for powder andprovisions. The roof had gunsmounted on traversing platformsand 12-pound brass howitzers inorder to defend the RoyalDockyard of Pembroke Dock. Thebuilding is three stories in heightand as you would expect solid inconstruction, however, it requiresmaintenance. Being offshore, thetower offers sweeping views of theCleddau River, Pembroke Dock,Neyland and Llanstadwell. HISTORYHISTORYHISTORYHISTORYWork commenced in 1848 toconstruct the Gun Tower and wascompleted in 1851, it is threestories in height and was designedto be operated by one officer and33 men. Approximately 13m high,the walls are substantial and at thethickest parts 9ft (2.7metres)reducing to 5ft (1.5 metres).Although the tower was manned inthe mid 19th Century by theMilitary/Naval forces, it never fireda shot in anger in the defence ofThe Royal Dockyard and waseventually disarmed in 1882.It is understood by the PembrokeMuseum Trust that Artillery Menfrom the Royal Dockyard Corps,Pembroke Dock Battalion wouldhave occupied the tower when firstconstructed and it is also known bythe Trust that the Royal ArtilleryMilitia were on SummertimeTraining at some point prior to1861. Later, members of thePembrokeshire Artillery Volunteerswould have provided themanpower with some involvementof members of the regular RoyalArtillery.The 1861 Census lists a RoyalArtillery Gunner, his wife and fourchildren plus a tower keeper, wifeand six children. Around the timethe Tower would have beendisarmed (1882), the 1881 Censuslists a Coast Brigade Bombardier,his wife and three young childrenalong with a Coast Brigade Gunnerand his wife. Later, the Towerbecame the base of the 3rd fleetbetween 1913 1914.Although disarmed of its originalmilitary fire power, The Tower

continued to serve as a Militaryfortress both throughout World WarI and World War II. In World War I,it became an observation post andlater during World War II, it wasmanned by members of the RAFRegiment and used as a machinegun position hosting 3 twin lewisguns in brick compounds.Following use as a store, SouthPembrokeshire District Councilacquired the Tower in 1975. Thebuilding was the subject of anextensive refurbishment in1994/1995 and became The GunTower Museum operated by ThePembroke Dock Museum Trustuntil 2017.

Trefoil plan with flat front tolandward, curved ends and curvedseaward side. Battered walls toheavy bull-nose moulding underhigh coped parapet. South side hascentre parabolic arched recessbreaking cornice with rusticatedvoussoirs. Six small musketryloops in parapet over. Within archis granite rusticated doorway dated"VR 1851" with two loops each sideand iron hoist to left. To left andright of arch there is a single loopand then curved ends each withthree camber-headed ashlarframed windows with smallersquare openings.
