What is a Students’ Union?

We are an independent charity that is here to support you through University and as soon as you enrol, you become a member of the Students’ Union. This membership is automatic and free, it’s your right and it’s going to make your time here even better.Being independent from the University means you get to decide how we’re run and what we do. One of our main functions is representation, which means we make sure your voice gets heard in the University, that your rights as a student are upheld and you get the most out of your degree. As well as this, we offer free, professional and confidential advice for when things don’t quite go to plan.

We also provide students with lots of opportunities to have fun, make friends and get experience outside of the lecture hall. You might be interested involunteering, joining one of our sports clubs or societies, attending a ‘give it a go’ session, working for us or attending some of our fantastic night time and day time events. Everything we do is led by students, for students.

I love making and creating, taking my inspiration from plants and wildlife. I especially like using printmaking, collage, colour and pattern in my illustrations.

Cooking decent (and reasonably healthy) food for cheapat uni can be a bit of an effort so this is one recipe thatgot me through my years of financial struggle! And also a good one to impress guests.

How to make SIX Pitta Pizzas for as little as 95p…!You will need:Pitta Bread (25p for 6)Tomato Pureé (20p)Mozzarella (50p)(above prices available at Sainsbury’s, but also availableat other stores I’m sure…!?)

Optional extras- splash of oil, mushrooms, pepperoni, peppers (anything you want on a pizza)

Method1. If using Olive Oil, splash a very small amount on top of the pitta.2. Spread on a layer of tomato puree.3. Cut your mozzarella into slices (thicker the better if you love cheese as much as me) and place on top, as well as any other extras you fancy.4. Put under the grill at about 190 degrees or just a medium heat for about 15 minutes or until the cheese has completely melted.5. SERVE and enjoy!

To go extra healthy use wholemeal pitta and shove a load of veg on top.

So for less than£1 you can make SIX pizza pittas.

What a bargain!

Hey David, thank you for chatting withus today! So, firstly, what is it likeworking in a university? It’s really good, and it’s different! The difficult thing is making sure we alwaysprovide value for money for students as weunderstand how hard it can be. So we have £3, £2 and £1 meals available and have also just halved the price of all our fruit. This term we’ll also reduce the price on fresh vegetables, salads and other healthy options!

What kind of options do you have?We have lots for vegetarians, vegans, celiacs, loads of gluten-free stuff. But if students come to see us with dietary requirements we will go out of our way to look into it and try to please everybody.

So David, tell us what your best dish is…!?Oh it’s hard to say! We do make a beautiful risotto, a lovely chicken and bacon carbonara, steak and kidney pie. It depends what mood you’re in. I work on a four week menu cycle, so we run it through the first four and then if we feel there are things on there that people don’t like we can change it for the next cycle. If students come in and ask us to try something, we will give it a go.If we took chips off the menu though I think there would be a riot!

Can students get involved?Yes, we have student staff in all sorts of areas. Waitressing at some big events, helping wash up. But also if students wanted to take things like cooking or catering further we can take them in and give them some work experience.

Top tips on a budgetChoose your food carefully, don’t just pick up the first thing or the ‘three for £10’ deals as they might not last long. Get to the markets as they do really good products at a very cheap price. Get yourself a cookbook, cook with people you live with and also come by and ask us here, we’re happy to give you some tips!

Moving away from home can seem daunting, and movingto a different country can sometimes be a bit more difficult. As I was in your shoes only 3 years ago, I thought I couldimpart a few tips I would have liked to know on my arrivalto the UK:

1. Culture shock is a real thing. Having been through itmyself the one thing I learnt is that it’s ok to compare hometo the UK - they are different places after all! But try andembrace the new culture you have found yourself in, headdown to a pub and try some fish and chips, if you’re feelingadventurous order it with a side of mushy peas.

2. You’re not too old to feel homesick. Although you’ve justarrived at Uni and you feel like you’re ready to take on theworld, sometimes the smallest things can make you think of home, and having a bad day where all you want to do is book a one way ticket back is quite normal. Just hang in there, remember why you came here in the first place and take it one day at a time.

3. My final tip, and this is probably the most important thing I learnt when arriving in the UK, is that when someone tells you ‘I’ll be there in 2 minutes’, it never means 2 minutes! And if you’re meant to meet at 5 that probably means 5:30.

I hope you all have a great Freshers’, do stop and introduce

yourself when you see me around Campus!

Hey there Freshers! Congrats on making it to University! Your first year will beyour most fun BY FAR. Below are a few words of adviceto get you started on making friends and settling in.

Attend the Freshers’ Fair! You’ve got an opportunity to sample all that your SU,your University and your local town has to offer in oneconvenient place. From promotions to taster sessionsmake sure you grab all the freebies that you can, wewon’t judge you ;)

Be keen! You’ve paid all this money to study here make sure youuse these resources as they’re here to help you! Emailyour lecturer when you need help, get to know yourfaculty office and go visit them during office hours, don’tleave it until a week before deadline before you seek advice.

Be a good housemate! You’ll be spending the next year living with these people and it’s best to start off on the right foot. Introduce yourself to your neighbours, ask their name if you forget (you will) remember you’re all in the same shoes, miles away from home and your old friends, MAKE NEW ONES!

HAVE FUN!The Student lounge is a great place to start; it’s locatedin the Tindal building/Mumford and is the hub of studentactivity. Open from 9am - late feel free to use it as a safespace and unwind. During the evenings events are held thereand there’s a bar that serves drinks (Chelmsford campus only)at ridiculously cheap prices! (Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

Whether it is arguments with housemates, being home sick, feeling isolated or the need to feel part of something bigger.Get active! Student activism has taken Anglia Ruskin by storm, especially in the last year. With the Feminist Society runningthe campaign ‘I need feminism because…’ going national, therehas never been a better time to get involved. You can joinexisting campaigns or start your own! Activism enablesstudents to feel part of something bigger, help to make achange and take a stand while meeting likeminded individuals.

So what is available and who deals with what: For Public Protest, look towards ARU Greenpeace Society,Vegan Society, Amnesty Society and us, the Students’ Union.

For Student Concerns, look towards your elected portfolio reps, such as; Women’s rep, disability rep and many more. You can alsoturn to your elected course rep (all of which you can stand for).

As a self-professed lover of books, the one tip I can offerto new University students is this- don’t let your coursebooks be the only literature you read for the time of yourdegree! Indulge yourself and get stuck into reading forpleasure. Here are a few suggestions of the books to readas a Fresher…

The ClassicOld classics might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but youshould read at least one in your life (even if only to sayyou have). The bonus is they tend to be cheap because they’vebeen in print for so long..! 1984 by George Orwell.

The Coming-Of-AgeWhether you’re straight from school, or heading back intoeducation after some time out, a good coming of age bookcan often be relatable, lift your spirits, or ground you. I am CharlotteSimmons by Tom Wolfe.

The ThinkerMaybe fiction isn’t your thing; make sure you get yourself reading some non-fiction that isn’t related to your course. A Brief History of Everything by Bill Bryson.

Just Good BooksSome books are hard to categorise- we just know we love them. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak .
