CAMBRIA LIONS CLUB NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017 WWW.PINEDORADO.COM PAGE 1 Cambria Lions President’s Message Dear Cambria Lions, Another year passed and the club has changed. At my first meeting as President I had the honor to welcome a new member, Mike McAvoy…. fabulous. At the same meeting we received a glimpse of what ArtBeat has done in a short couple of years to instill energy and vigor into Cambria’s youth. My thanks to Lion Anna Griffith for helping us understand the dimensions of what ArtBeat is trying to do through the example of traditional dances from the Folklorico dancers. They were great! Like ArtBeat, new members refresh our club. But we also lost a few friends who made me feel welcome as a new member. One of these was Marshall Gilston. A celebration of Marshall’s life will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, August 5 th at the Cavaliar in San Simeon. More than tweaks will be needed though, as we face future limitations in the resources needed for our club to do its work in the community. The reasons behind the need to rework the way we generate and manage resource are complicated but bound to happen. The club finished the last fiscal year in a bit of a financial hole. And the budget for the coming year suggests this hole will only grow deeper. At the July 11 th meeting the problem was discussed in the context of a question: what member’s gut told them. I sensed a consensus to continue the work in the community the Lions do as best we can, while beginning a process to renew the club’s operations. I don’t know what this process will be or where we will end up. Nonetheless, I plan to organize an ad hoc committee to study the challenges the club faces and make recommendations. Cambria Lions President’s Message

Dear Cambria Lions,

Another year passed and the club has changed.

A celebration of Marshall’s life will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, August 5th at the Cavaliar in San Simeon.

At the July 11th meeting the problem was discussed in the context of a question: what member’s gut told them. I sensed a consensus to continue the work in the community the Lions do as best we can, while beginning a process to renew the club’s operations. I don’t know what this process will be or where we will end up. Nonetheless, I plan to organize an ad hoc committee to study the challenges the club faces and make recommendations. Late-Breaking News from the President

By hook or crook, a group of us have managed to put together a Follies program this year - two nights, Saturday, September 2nd and Sunday, September 3rd.  Dave Sassaman is leading the effort, but I thought I would put out a letter inviting each of you to attend.  It's a fabulous program headlined by Kiki Ebsen and her band.  She is well known in the industry for her original vocals, and musicality.  Her work is summarized under the Follies button on the new Pinedorado website.  We will also have an accomplished local pianist, Kate Hepworth doing Kiki's warm up. And, we haven't forgot those of you who dance.  It should be a great evening.

Tickets are priced at $30 for general admission and $60 for angels (this includes table seating and free access to the bar).  I will have a supply of tickets available at the meeting on August 8th.  Tickets will also be available at the Chamber office on Main St.  You can also email me at [email protected] with reservations and pick them up at the meeting.   Hope to see everyone there.

Mike Broadhurst

I promise to bring proposals to the general membership at a meeting before year’s end. Each lion has something distinctive that they bring to our club. It’s the main thing that makes this club so special for me. I already have volunteers for this committee, but am looking for more. Feel free to call me and talk – 924-1260.

I also wanted to remind each of you that Pinedorado is rapidly approaching. This event is the jewel Cambria offers our community, county and more. This year’s event is going to be great. I hope each of you will volunteer the time that makes Pinedorado so special.

Finally, let me thank last year’s board. They tackled some challenging problems decisively.

Good on you ladies and gentlemen.

Mike Broadhurst, President
