WHAT’S ON AROUND TOWN

WelcomeWelcome to ‘Calypso’ – our monthly update of what’s happening in and around Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay.

We are really excited to present to you this month our Prestige Collection – a curated collection of just 15 luxury designer homes that have all the bells and whistles included. They’ve each enjoyed bespoke interior styling by our very clever interior designers. If you book an appointment with our Caloundra Cay Sales Team, you will be able to walk through these homes and choose exactly which one is right for you. It’s a rare collection and when the homes are gone, they are gone. We encourage you to stop by and inspect them – the Prestige Collection is definitely inspirational and aspirational.

Our gardens are also looking beautiful now that the heat of summer has passed us by. It’s actually the perfect time of the year to be out on our pickleball and tennis courts, enjoying a hit and a giggle!

We are now eagerly looking forward to the Grand Opening of our amazing Hemingway’s Country Club. It’s set to be an exciting day! You can read more about Kallan (our site supervisor, who is bringing this Country Club project to life) on Page 6. To book an appointment to view the Prestige Collection and our greater resort grounds, freecall the Sales Centre on 1800 55 66 77.

Welcome to all our new residents! We now have 20 homes occupied with 35 residents as of the end of April 2019. Our current statistics are 43 per cent males and 56 per cent females, with 25 per cent single households.

Hemingway’s Country Club will be officially opened on Saturday, May 25. This stellar building will be, without a doubt, the crème del a crème of country clubs on the Sunshine Coast. It will feature a luxury movie theatre, billiards room, arts and craft and music room. For those who enjoy music you can play our grand piano or enjoy a dance on our parquetry dance floor. For the active residents, we have a Milon gym, heated indoor pool, outdoor pool with a swim up bar and ten-pin bowling. There is so much more to see and do in Hemingway’s Country Club. Once it opens, there will be weekly activities organised for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to having our first dinner dance, pot luck dinner and our first ten-pin bowling league and so much more (don’t forget drinks at the swim-up bar or in the Country Club in front of the fire, or just some quiet reading in our library).

Our current residents are making full use of our bowls clubhouse and its adjoining eight-rink undercover bowls green. We have weekly activities in place there, with residents playing bowls, Mah-jong, cards and, of course, Friday night Happy Hour.

We look forward to welcoming all our current and future residents to Hemingway’s Country Club to enjoy all its facilities with us.

TOM AND JULIE WILLIAMS (PICTURED ABOVE)

“We relocated from a lifestyle village in Western Australia and had been researching resorts in Queensland for more than a year. We were particularly drawn to Palm Lake Resort. We looked at several Palm Lake Resort locations and finally decided Caloundra was the one for us because of the fabulous location and facilities, in particular the undercover bowls rink. We chose our home based on the design and its close proximity to the facilities. We are loving watching the resort grow and meeting our new neighbours and, of course, enjoying playing bowls at the outstanding bowls rink and clubhouse!”

WHAT THEY SAY...On the highly anticipated eve of the Grand Opening of Hemingway’s Country Club on May 25, we spoke to the one person who knows just how incredible Palm Lake Resort

country clubs and facilities are - the guy who builds them.

BUILD ’EM UP

Kallan Perceval (pictured right) is tasked with turning bold ideas and intricate two-dimensional plans into some of Queensland’s most opulent recreational facilities for Palm Lake Group. A carpenter from the age of 18, Kallan was initially employed to build homes at Palm Lake Resort Bargara in 2009. In the 10 years since then, however, he has progressed up the ranks to become site supervisor for all major facility builds across the entire Palm Lake Group. Kallan has been responsible for building country clubs at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa, Toowoomba Pinnacle and Beachmere Bay, and the latest feather in Kallan’s cap is Hemingway’s Country Club, here at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay which opens this month.

“The progression of these country clubs has been amazing,” Kallan says. “They get better and better all the time.”

Hemingway’s Country Club will literally be Palm Lake Group’s biggest country club to date (and Kallan’s biggest as well) and will offer residents the most features. At 3500sqm under roof, it’s 500sqm bigger than the Master Builders Association award-winning Pinnacle Country Club at Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle. The ultimate location for high-class fun and games, oozing colonial grandeur and that tropical Caribbean vibe that Caloundra Cay is becoming famous for, the Hemingway’s Country Club precinct will feature an outdoor pool with swim-up

pool bar and an outdoor sunken lounge with fire pit.

“I know the Caloundra Cay residents are really going to love the pool bar and fire pit,” Kallan says. “The tropical landscaping is also coming together really well.”

Inside, Caloundra Cay residents will enjoy a ten-pin bowling alley, luxury cinema, an exclusive Milon gym, heated indoor swimming pool, virtual golf simulator room, a large bar area and coffee lounge, dance floor with grand piano, billiards room, arts and craft room, music room, woodworking workshop, library and more. Hemingway’s Country Club will complement the championship undercover eight-rink bowls green that opened here in recent months. Ever modest, Kallan says the real success of any of his country club projects is always in the team of local contractors who work together to bring these facilities to life.

“They are the guys who deserve the credit,” Kallan says. “It’s also great to be supporting our local economies in this way.”

JAN WOODS (PICTURED RIGHT)

“I moved to Caloundra Cay from Wellington Point in December. I had been researching lifestyle resorts for 18 months and when I received my Caloundra Cay info pack I was wowed by the home designs and the location. I love the facilities that are on offer here and the fact that the resort is pet friendly because I live here with my two miniature schnauzers, Poppy and Sebastian. I just love my new home and the amazing people here make it a great place to live. I wake up happy everyday!”

MERV & TOBY CONSTABLE

“Even though we were overseas when Caloundra Cay opened, we decided to purchase a home from the plan online with Monique’s assistance, as we were aware of the standard and facilities provided. It is truly living up to our expectations.”

A recent report by the Clean Energy Council revealed six of the nation’s Top 10 postcodes for solar installation were located in Queensland. Bundaberg’s 12,620 installations placed them in the top spot and sharing the spotlight were Hervey Bay at Number 3, Caloundra at Number 4 and Toowoomba at Number 5 (locations that are also home to a Palm Lake Resort!). The total number of Australian households with installed solar panels reached two million at the end of last year, and Palm Lake Resort residents are proud to be among those enjoying the benefits of solar. You probably already know that, as a renewable energy source, solar power doesn’t deplete natural resources like coal, but did you know that it also saves water, too? Traditional energy uses thousands of litres of water every year – the only water your solar panels need is a bit of rain water that naturally washes them off if they get dirty. Making the switch to solar also reduces the air pollution that would have been created by traditional electricity, and can help reduce your home’s carbon footprint, helping to slow climate change. Not only do solar panels offer significant environmental benefits, particularly in comparison to electricity generated by fossil fuels, but they also mean serious savings on your power bill. And, with more solar projects popping up all over Australia, solar panels are creating more opportunities and employment for workers.

Here at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay, our homes are constructed using the latest technology to ensure superior thermal and environmental efficiency, with the solar orientation of homes also taken into careful consideration. Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay homes come equipped with 1.5kw solar power panels, with micro invertors and enphase monitoring. It’s just our way of helping to save the environment while also helping our home owners save at their hip pocket into the future.

SUNNY SIDE UP

Check out this amazing sunset, recently shot over Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay by one of our residents.

Did you know Queensland is leading the way when it comes to solar installation, proving the ‘Sunshine State’ is more than living up to its name.

One might think that a life working in coal mines and driving trucks for a living might leave you craving a retirement of rocking chairs and picking up new, lower impact hobbies – like knitting. While Ray Todd (pictured right) is certainly enjoying the element of peace and quiet his new life in Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay has brought him, he can’t seem to let go of the fun parts of his tough, hands on career background – where twelve-and-a-half hour days were the norm.

“I’ve always driven big vehicles, and it’s been something I’ve loved doing my whole life,” says Ray. “So, when word spread that the resort was looking for a bus driver, I couldn’t help but put my hand up.”

While it’s certainly not delivering nitrogen and oxygen to hospitals or navigating a coal mine, as Ray has previously earned a living doing, he still loves his new role nonetheless. Pick-ups and drop offs around the resort are his main responsibility at the moment – aside from the occasional visit to the local hotel for a group dinner – but Ray thinks work will pick up as the resort continues to grow.

“We might need to bring a few more bus drivers on board,” says Ray. “Otherwise, I’ll become a taxi driver instead of a retiree!”

With more residents volunteering to drive the bus, Ray could focus on his other “job” – maintaining the lawn bowls green. There’s certainly no rest for the wicked.

“I don’t mind a bit of hard work,” Ray insists.

Ray and his wife were two of the first names on the list when the Palm Lake Group first announced this ground-breaking Caloundra Cay development. No strangers to the area – they’d moved down from Yeppoon in retirement and had always holidayed at Cotton Tree while living in New Zealand. The couple spent a lot of time checking out other resorts in the area in anticipation of their big move. Trekking out as far as Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba to choose their favourite home design, as well as scouting out the nearer Palm Lake Resorts at Bargara, Beachmere and Cooroy-Noosa, Ray says it was the quality of each build and the class-leading facilities that ultimately drew them in. And, Ray predicts that many more will follow suit.

“There are only about 35 of us at the moment, but I daresay there will be more social groups and activities popping up as more people keep moving in,” says Ray. “I’m excited to make use of the new, state-of-the-art gym and we can’t wait for the new country club to open; it will be perfect for happy hours with our friends.”

And while we have a feeling that Ray will wind up as the designated driver, we don’t think he will mind one bit.

Despite only officially opening late last year, Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay already has a distinct community flavour – and it’s wholly and solely on the part of the spirited residents. One such resident is Tom Boyd (pictured right). Having moved in in November of last year as one of the first handful of residents, Tom has already started a social group to spread the love of samba. No, not the dance style. Samba is a card game, similar to canasta, that is relatively easy to pick up but, once you’ve got the hang of it, promises tremendous fun. Tom and his wife had previously played samba where they were living before moving into Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay, going along to Wednesday card nights with a group of 20 other passionate samba players.

While Tom doesn’t have quite that many people playing just yet – he reckons his card nights at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay usually draw anywhere up to eight players – he is confident that as the resort grows, so too will his samba group.

“We’ve had a very good response so far,” says Tom. “You’ve got to remember that there are only around 35 of us in the resort at the moment, but more people are always moving in.”

Tom explains that samba is the kind of game you can pick up in an hour, but it takes a bit of time to learn how to play strategically. The number of players can vary – the game requires anywhere from two to six people at the table – which makes it the perfect game for a Palm Lake Resort setting. It’s not serious, just a bit of fun.

“The whole idea is to have a fun night, all together,” says Tom. “We encourage people to bring along nibbles and

we just sit around and play, and enjoy one another’s company. It’s a great way to get to know people.”

While the community aspect didn’t initially draw Tom to Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay (he and his wife admit they were more impressed by the home designs, having looked at Palm Lake Resorts Cooroy-Noosa and Toowoomba as well), it certainly has been an unexpected bonus. His wife has thrown herself into the lawn bowls scene, and Tom is anxiously awaiting the opening of Hemingway’s Country Club so he can branch out and try some new sports and hobbies. But, for now, Tom is more than happy with his evening strolls through the grounds, the view from his villa and, of course, his regular samba group meetings. Already, he feels right at home.

Who says retirement has to be boring? Not this Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay resident, that’s for sure.

We often hear of Palm Lake Resort residents falling in love with a new sport or hobby they’ve never tried – or even considered – before moving in. But, when a resident introduces

something new to their resort, equally wonderful things can happen.
