Calvo’s Insurance Underwriters (CIU) is the cornerstone of Calvo Enterprises. It was the first of the
Calvo companies, established in 1938 by Eduardo T. “Jake” Calvo, who began selling fire and
typhoon insurance out of his home. What began as a small venture ran from his living room, is
now the largest insurance provider on Guam. Spearheaded by Paul Calvo Jr., Calvo’s
Insurance has over 100 employees, three offices in Guam, a branch office in Saipan and a
branch in Palau. Calvo’s insurance offers the full range of auto, home, health, life, property,
marine cargo, casualty, bonding and liability insurance coverage. As the market leader on
Guam, the company collects more than $60 million in premiums annually. CIU’s credibility is
bolstered by its strong partners abroad such as American International Group (AIG) and Tokio
Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Company of Japan. Calvo’s insurance dominates the market
by providing an affordable comprehensive insurance plan and by offering an extensive
network to its customers. Calvo’s renowned SelectCare medical plan allows access to more
than 100 physicians and clinics in the region, as well as more than 350,000 health care providers
in the United States and Philippines. Every year CIU continues to set the standard and stay at the
leading edge of the insurance industry.
Calvo’s Insurance Underwriters
Calvo Enterprises, Inc. owns the island’s oldest title insurance and escrow
services company on Guam. Title Guaranty of Guam, Inc. is the perfect
complement to Calvo Enterprises’ core businesses of insurance and real
estate. This division was established in 1963 to meet the title insurance and
escrow needs of lenders during the federal construction boom during the
60’s. Title Guaranty is underwritten by TicorTitle Insurance Co. a member of
the Fidelity National Financial family of title companies whose parent
company is consistently rated “A” or higher by Standard and Poor’s and holds $940 million in
assets. Title Guaranty of Guam has become a vital part of Guam’s real estate business and
promises to gain a stronger foothold as the island’s economy strengthens.

became the island’s premier and reliable news coverage network. Joseph Calvo is the General
Manager of KUAM, a company that has transformed itself from a news network station to
Guam’s pre-eminent and riveting entertainment and news outlet. Pacific Telestations boasts a
host of networks such as Guam’s critically-acclaimed news network—KUAM TV 8—as well as the
CBS-affiliate station TV 11, local radio station and talk show Isla 63 and the islands most popular
and unpredictable radio broadcast—I94. KUAM’s news team has been the recipient of a
number of impressive awards including Journalist of the Year, Best Documentary in the region,
and many Edward R. Murrow regional awards. The KUAM radio personalities are just as
accomplished having the islands largest listenership. I94’s no-holds-barred approach to radio
grabs attention by exposing the many controversial, yet truthful ironies of Guam. KUAM has
brought news and entertainment to Guam’s residents for over 15 years with some of the most
accomplished, courageous, and colorful personalities on island. KUAM is first on the scene,
whether it’s typhoon coverage or government scandal, they tell the story.

Pay-Less Markets, Inc.
In 1985, Calvo Enterprises expanded into the grocery retail business by acquiring Pay-Less
Supermarkets. Then, it was a fledgling grocery outlet and today there are now six branches, with
a seventh opening this year, and gross annual sales exceeding $90 million, with a workforce of
hundreds. Mike Benito and Kathy Calvo Sgro have lead Pay-Less into the 21st century of grocery
retail. The company has continued to innovate and enhance its product offerings, its facilities,
and its customers’ shopping experience so that it is now the premier supermarket for the people
of Guam. The strength of Pay-Less is outlined in its mission statement: “to provide the greatest
customer value every day.” Aside from happy customers, Pay-Less features an unparalleled
product selection with over 35,000 items for customers to choose from everyday, including 1,200
bonus-buys in stores every day. Pay-Less also offers the freshest and most wide-ranging
inventory of produce on-island. Pay-Less is able to offer its customers such quality goods at
inexpensive rates because of its relationships abroad. They have developed a first-rate supply
chain by partnering with Bruno’s Quality Produce in California and with Associated Grocers,
located in the Pacific Northwest. The Calvo’s are in the process of constructing two new stores
in the villages of Mangilao and Agat. Recently Pay-Less stores have undergone million dollar
renovations to improve its facilities and offer a better experience to its customers.

by John T. Calvo, President / General Manger, and serves as the distribution hub of the Marianas
with product routes from Guam extending to CNMI, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau and
the Marshall Islands. Mid-Pacific controls the distribution channels in the Marianas for some of
the most popular tobacco and beverage brands in the world. The brands encompass Phillip

beverages such as Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft. Compounding those products is
Mid-Pac’s import lineup of Heineken, Fosters, San Miguel, Sapporo, and Peroni. Mid-Pac also
distributes an array of popular wine and liquor brands such as Johnnie Walker, Jack Daniels,
Grey Goose, Hypnotiq, SKYY Vodka, Dom Perignon, Tanqueray, Bacardi and many more. The
focus for future Mid-Pac diversification is non-alcoholic beverages. The company already
carries Snapple, Calistoga, San Pellegrino and Monster Energy drink while looking to expand this
realm of business. With over 55,000 square feet of warehouse space to accommodate its
ever-increasing inventory line, the company plans to acquire more products and expand on its
distribution lines through creating a syndicated distribution network in the Marianas.

Punch, Canada Dry, Diet Pepsi, Mug Root Beer, Lipton Brisk Tea, Dole Juices, Starbucks
Frappuchino and many more. Moreover, in 2003 Pepsi and the Calvo’s acquired the ultimate
sports beverage—Gatorade. Not only do the Calvo’s distribute Gatorade, they are active
sponsors and participants in local sports leagues behind the Gatorade banner—sponsoring
basketball leagues, soccer leagues, youth football, volleyball, and 5k races. The Calvo’s have
expanded the export lines of Pepsi and Gatorade throughout the Marianas and beyond to
American Samoa, Nauru, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, and Tonga, just to name a few. The Calvo’s
have been instrumental in bolstering the Pepsi and Gatorade reputation throughout the islands
by offering great customer service focusing on building product loyalty. This year, the company
has invested $4 Million in a modern state of the art bottling plant. Pepsi will continue to provide
a superb product and service in hopes of driving the goal of being the largest, most profitable
