The Shepherd’s Notebook Lent: A Time To Retreat, Remember, Reconsider, Re-engage

ent... the season of repentance and preparation for Holy Week,

and Easter … it’s here again. Al-ready. It seems as though we’ve barely packed away the decorations of Christmas. And now, we look again to Jesus: No longer a tiny infant to hold in our hands. Now we begin to see Him for who He truly is: the One who holds our lives in His hands.

Lent could be thought of as the Pause… the Pause that re-minds us who we are and why we need Jesus Christ, our Sav-ior.

Think of Lent as a 40-day pause, like pulling into a rest area on a long journey. During Lent, we retreat, pulling away from the task, getting off the road or path that has occupied us. We pause and check our direction and progress. We re-member, and maybe, even reconsider, our destination and our ways and means of getting there. We might even ask, “Do we really want to go there?” Then, after a suitable time, we re-engage. We get back to the task, on the road or the path, and move on.

Here and now, in Lent 2012, the Lord is pulling me over to the side of this annual journey, this retracing of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and the Cross. It’s time to Retreat. Remember. Reconsider, Re-engage. As I do so, a certain portion of the Bible – the tenth chapter of Luke’s Gospel – keeps coming to mind. From that portion:

Jesus said: “The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Ask the Lord of the har-vest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field. Go! I am sending you out …” (Luke 10:2-3a)

In this text, it was still early in Jesus’ ministry, certainly early in the history of His church. Not too early, though, for Jesus to have his followers pause for a moment, take stock of the situation, and get on with His mission in a bold, clear way. Retreat, remember, reconsider, re-engage.

Our year is moving rapidly from one busy season to another. Competition for our time, talent and treasures doesn’t seem to cease. All of this will be over before we know it. Meanwhile, in Christ’s Church, in the Year of our Lord 2012, we’re mov-ing, perhaps more quickly than we realize, through an interim ministry year. It hardly seems like I’ve been with you for seven months now. This Lent and this interim will be over before we know it. And, yes, we all have been busy.

During this season of Lent, I’m not suggesting that everyone get busier at church. Indeed, some are so dedicated to churchly roles and responsibilities that I fear they will be burned out. Along with them, I wonder: Who among us will step forward to be their replacements and to take on that which goes undone?

I’m not even suggest-ing any major changes in what we’re doing at this moment in Cal-vary’s history. Instead, I’m suggesting a deep, lasting change in our way of being, abiding in Christ in whatever we are doing.

How about it? What if God’s people of Calvary would take this Lenten season – individually, as families, and as holy community -- to Retreat, Remember, Reconsider and Re-engage the mission and ministry that our Lord has called us into.

• How ready are we to abide with Jesus in the harvest-field of souls who long for the peace, wholeness and eternal security that comes through repentance, forgive-ness and renewal in Christ?

• How willing are we to offer spiritual comfort in Jesus’ name, along with our gifts of material and financial as-sistance?

• How able are we to tell the old, old story as Scripture tells it, along with our own faith stories, in ways that are as natural as telling about our experiences with families and friends? How are we welcoming the stranger into God’s house and family?

Lent. Time to Retreat, Remember, Re-consider and Re-engage. How about it, Calvary?

In Christ and His service,

Pastor Cathi Braasch, STS

PS – Next month, watch for notes from my journey to Guate-mala with the Partners in Medical Missions.

When will we take time to retreat, reconsider and re-engage the harvest that our Lord Jesus

Christ sends us into?

Calvary’s pastoral search team has now completed the first phase of the search process which included Bible study, sur-veying the congregation for input, completing the NALC’s congregational profile, and developing interview questions and evaluation tools for interviews, sermons, etc.

We are now entering the exciting second phase of the process when we receive names of candidates from the NALC and prayerfully consider their fit with our congregation. Pastor David Wendell, Ministry Coordinator for the NALC, has re-

cently submitted names of two candidates. The search com-mittee has reviewed the profiles completed by these pastors. After praying for God’s wisdom and guidance and studying the profiles, the team concluded that neither of these candi-dates is a fit for Calvary’s needs.

We are looking forward to receiving the next set of candi-dates’ names and will keep the congregation posted as we consider them.

Pastoral Search Team Update by Grace Gunnlaugsson

“Will You Betray Me?” (Luke 22:48) This was Jesus’ question to Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night he was arrested. In our lives of faith as Jesus’ disciples, it is a question that could be asked of each of us as well. This five-part drama series focuses on “betrayal” as a central theme. Written in a direct and edgy style, the monologues feature biblical characters that (knowingly or unknowingly) contributed to the betrayal and death of Jesus.

Lenten Dramatic Series 5-week series continues through March

Youth Group Meetings: Sunday, March 18

Summer Camp This summer, we are encouraging our youth to come and spend a week at Pine Lake Camp, in Waupaca WI.

Pine Lake is part of Crossways Camping Ministries. Crossways youth camp programs are designed to give campers an opportunity to experience all of the camp favorites while learning about our incredible awesome God. Games, Worship, swimming, crafts, nature, and campfires are just some of the activities your camper will participate in. During the week of June 24-29, 2012, Pine Lake offers camp programs for both our Bridge and Connect age groups. Pathfinders: Completed grades 3-5 Enjoy playing in God’s beautiful creation, cooking out and hanging out with friends. Campers will grow in faith and make memories in wonderful outdoor settings. Confirmation Camp: Completed grades 6-8 Confirmation campers join together in faith-filled conversations with their councilors, youth leaders, and/or Pastors. Campers grow together and leave strengthened for service in their congregations, schools, and communities.

A bit nervous to send your camper off? No worries! Pine Lake has fantastic councilors that have been extensively trained to work with kids from grades 1-12! Pine Lake also has on on-site nurse, and lots of experience working with various allergies and medical conditions. In addition to these wonderful people, I will be at camp too! Spending time with our Confirmation campers, popping in and out of the Pathfinders cabin groups, and always available to give High 5’s and hugs as needed throughout the week. Trip Cost: $ 200 per person WITH fundraising participation (*Financial assistance available and completely confidential. Please complete the form and give it to Pastor Cathi.)

All youth attending a summer camp or trip are expected to participate in at least 2 of the Youth Fundraisers to help differ the cost of their trip. If a youth doesn’t meet this requirement, the cost of their trip will be higher to offset the difference. YOUTH MINISTRY

Youth Mission Trip This summer, we are heading to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota to participate in a YouthWorks Mission Trip! We will be gone from July 8-14, 2012. The mission project runs Sunday afternoon through Friday morning. Our trip includes a day on each end of the mission project to accommodate the drive AND for some sightseeing, and playtime!

So, “What is a YouthWorks trip?”, you may ask..... Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students may spend all week at one service site or switch between sites during the week. Examples of service sites that your students may participate at are Kids Club and Work Projects. Kids Club is a hands-on program led by your youth offering high-energy games, crafts, skits, songs and interactive les-sons all designed to help kids learn about Jesus. Work projects may include painting houses, performing minor home repair, cleaning up debris, volunteering in community gardens or other projects in the community. They are all blessings to the commu-nity and people in need. We cannot confirm until all groups arrive exactly what service opportunities your students will be a part of during the week. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit!

Trip Cost: $ 300 per person WITH fundraising participation (*Financial assistance available and completely confidential. Please complete the form and give it to Pastor Cathi)

All youth attending a summer trip are expected to participate in at least 2 of the Youth Fundraisers to help differ the cost of their trip. If a youth doesn’t meet this requirement, the cost of their trip will be higher to offset the difference.

Partner NALC Mission Church New Life Lutheran in Menomonie, WI

NALC

Calvary has partnered with New Life Lutheran Church, a mis-sion congregation in the NALC, to support them both financially and in prayer. The article below was written by Dr. Charlie Krueger. Dr. Krueger was instrumental in the creation of the New Life Lutheran Church. He is the congregation council president and the representative of their church at Mission Dis-trict Meetings. Dr. Krueger has a PhD in Organizational De-velopment and conducts classes and seminars in his training & development company. In addition, he currently teaches two classes in operations management at UW-Stout in Menomonie, WI.

The New Life Lutheran Church of Menomonie, Wisconsin had its first organizational meeting and worship service on February 27, 2011 at the River Heights Elementary School Cafeteria. We expected an attendance of about 15 people. To our surprise, about 60 people showed up. We had no church council, no NALC affiliation and no constitution. We “chipped in” to rent the River Heights School cafeteria and to pay for a supply pastor to travel from Minneapolis each Sunday to conduct our worship services. One of our first key votes was to choose a name for our church and to affiliate with the NALC. We approved a con-stitution, selected a church council, officers and established committees.

Today, we still meet in the River Heights Elementary School Cafeteria. We have searched for other facilities, but they are either too small or too expensive. Recently we tried to work out an agreement with another church that would allow us to use their sanctuary and Sunday school rooms on Sundays. After some investigation and negotiation, we proposed what we could realistically afford, $250.00 per Sunday. They countered with $500.00 per Sunday. For us, $250.00 was the absolute maxi-mum we could afford.

Our average attendance is now about 105 per Sunday. Our membership continues to grow and we are now at 140 members.

We have had as many as 137 attend our service. We have a dy-namic Sunday school and Confirmation program. We have an unbelievable group of people that have a warm and welcoming spirit. Everyone is willing to help out. Each Sunday we set up and take down our metal folding chairs, our altar, our wooden crosses that one of our members has built, Sunday school materi-als, etc. and other necessary items to conduct a service and fel-lowship hour. We continue to rent the elementary school cafete-ria.

We called Dr. Roy Harrisville to be our pastor and he accepted. His experience, leadership in the NALC as a Dean and his cre-dentials are stellar; however his compensation is far below what he is accustom to and what he is worth. We are indeed blessed that Pastor Roy is willing to be our spiritual leader.

We have much to do to continue to grow and to achieve our mis-sion “Strive to Live Christ’s Great Commission.”

Some of our 2012 short-term goals include: 1. Increase our membership from 140 to 190. 2. Implement a comprehensive media campaign. 3. Find a location other than River Heights Elementary

School. 4. Increase our long-term building fund from its current 3,000

level to 15,000. 5. Enact outreach and benevolence that doubles from 2,500

last year to 5,000 in 2012. 6. Hire a part-time education director. 7. Increase our pastor’s pay by 10%.

Our congregation is honored and humbled that you would con-sider us a mission church.

Thank you and God bless,

Dr. Charlie Krueger President, New Life Lutheran Church
