Presidents letter of introduction Welcome to the 35th Calne Music and Arts Festival. There can scarcely be anyone who has not felt the effects of the current national situation in some way or another. It is therefore particularly warming to demonstrate that life and creativity does still go on and here in Calne, Festival week will do much to lift our spirits.

We invite you to look at the programme of events that has been put together by the continuously hard working committee under the inspirational leadership of the Chairman Tim Browne and we thank them most

sincerely for the hours of hard work to which this brochure is testimony. Read it with care and be assured of a warm welcome to any of the events you choose. The variety is remarkable: there must be something for everyone, whatever your taste. As always there is a strong theme of links with Calne.

Children’s Art

We are very pleased to announce a new Festival event - A Children’s Art Exhibition.

Art work from local primary school children will be on display in Calne Library for the duration of the Festival. We hope all members of the community will visit the exhibition during normal library opening hours and will enjoy looking at the work of our talented young.

Programme of Events

The Exhibition and Festival will be opened by the celebrated film producer Christopher Miles.

From an early age Christopher Miles displayed

talent for film-making. He has written, directed and produced a variety of films for cinema and television including DH Lawrence’s The Virgin and the Gypsy and more recently Garrick’s restoration comedy The Clandestine Marriage.

He has won prestigious international film awards including a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination, and a first prize at Oberhausen and San Francisco Festivals. Christopher lives in Calstone with his wife Suzy who is a member of the Calne Artists Group.

Friday 2nd October

Pete Causer on box, Jeff Brown on whistles, Torquil McInness on mandola together with friends from the Old Road Tavern, Chippenham, on fiddle, melodeon and bodhrán.

Do join them in making music – all are welcome – or come and listen and sing over a pint in a friendly atmosphere. You may have seen Pete Causer performing in Larkrise to Candleford.

To get the Festival off to a lively start several events will be taking place in front of Sainsbury’s on the first Saturday morning. Events will include the Calnevalistas, Calne’s community Samba band who, this year, will parade through the town, starting at 10am.

The popular Chippenham Morris Men will dance their intricate patterns on the mosaic pavement in front of the store from 11am, and Calne’s Town Crier, Mark

Wylie with his bell and in full regalia, will be announcing the Festival to the townsfolk

Following the choir’s widely acclaimed performance of Haydn’s Creation back in April under the inimitable leadership of Phil Springate, they will perform a rather eclectic but cheerful and entertaining programme beginning with Elgar’s Six Bavarian Highlands Songs followed by Brahms’s Love Song Waltzes. It will end with the ever popular Flanders and Horovitz Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo. These works will be accompanied by piano, both two hands and four hands. The pianists will be Helen Heaton and Tony James.

The six-piece band offer a blend of traditional and modern English and American, folk, blues, country and bluegrass.

Although their programme includes a number of original songs much of their repertoire is written by three of the band who had already established themselves as songwriters before coming together last

year. You may recognise Georgia Browne (violin) who has appeared frequently in past festivals

Sunday 4th October

James Harpham has composed film scores since the 60s but first scored a silent film 5 years ago when Corsham Festival commissioned a score for ‘A Girl in Every Port’. Since then 23 further performances nationwide have followed. Each score uses musical quotations from popular and classical music composed in or before the silent film era, about 90 such quotations per

film. This technique dramatically helps the synchronisation, humour and variety of the film’s music. Harry Langdon has an appealing “babyface” - hence the tune appearing at the beginning and end of the film.....

This special Festival Service will be led by Father David Mills and will be attended by the Mayor and Councillors. All welcome.

Various styles of dance performed by Calne based students including Cheerleaders, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Street Jazz and much more. Also featuring our own mini

version of ‘Grease’ performed by students who attended a Summer Workshop in August. Choreographed and Directed by Miss Stacey Oliver.

Monday 5th October

Edward Whiting is Director of Music at St Mary’s School, Calne since 2006. He spent a year as Organ Scholar of Lincoln Cathedral in 1997/8 before taking up the Organ Scholarship at The Queen’s College, Oxford where he studied with David Sanger. His recital will be an all-French programme and a journey from Baroque through Romantic to contemporary, including works by Couperin, Vierne, Widor and Messiaen.

Calne Baroque Players are a group of friends who regularly meet to play Baroque chamber music. The players, led by Jon Forsyth (viola and keyboard) are David Bishop (cello), Sarah Hobbs (recorder and violin), Mary Forsyth (keyboard), and Mary Pilcher-Clayton (recorder and keyboard).

Tuesday 6th October

We are delighted to welcome back by popular demand Marlborough College’s finest musicians and scholars to perform a programme of chamber music ranging from the Baroque to the 20th Century.

Further details of their programme will appear on the Festival website.

We are privileged to host the Salisbury Cathedral Choir who will delight us with a programme of sacred music. The choir has maintained a tradition of church music that has been offered in the Cathedral since its consecration in 1258. Today the music is provided by sixteen boy choristers and sixteen girl choristers aged between 8-13yrs and six lay vicars.

Salisbury was the first English cathedral to form a separate foundation for girl choristers. The weekly services – daily full choral evensong and sung matins and Eucharist on a Sunday - are equally divided between the boy and girl choristers. They have recorded with the BBC, participated in regular festivals and have recently performed in the Baltic States, France, Italy and Austria.



An entertaining evening of recitals by six young local talented classical musicians. They will include Kate Smith (voice), Archie Campbell (voice), Rebecca Sharpe (piano), Harry Smith (violin), Lucy Meredith (flute & piano) and Lucy Varman (bassoon). This is an opportunity to be wowed by amazing young talent and restore your confidence in the up and coming generations.

SupaNova are a small, friendly Calne based female singing group with an eclectic repertoire who perform both accompanied and a-capella. Singing for our own pleasureand raising funds in aid of charity. SupaNova meet Tuesday evenings under the musical direction of Ursula Barham a Calne girl who owes her enthusiasm for singing to Audrey Currell and Holy Trinity School.

Wednesday 7th October

Katie has always been an active member of the musical life in the area for many years. You may remember her as a member of the very successful ‘Saxophonics’ ensemble at John Bentley lead by Tim Fosker and Terri Reed. She studied music at Cardiff University and then Birmingham Conservatoire where she has been busy performing with chamber

orchestras and extending her interests into folk music, particularly klezmer.

A programme in commemorating the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death featuring the Nine German Arias, sung by Hannah Grove Atherton, interspersed with Solo Sonatas for Violin (Lara James), Oboe (Belinda Paul), Viola da Gamba (Lesley Shrigley Jones) and Harpsichord (Christopher Kent). The performance will be given on baroque instruments which will include a copy of a harpsichord by Goujon in the museum of the Paris Conservatoire

The Calne Silver Band will be joined in concert by the ever-popular Chippenham Male Voice Choir in a programme selected from their wide repertoire of light music.

To commemorate National Poetry Day, the prize-giving for the Festival Poetry Competition will take place, with selected entries being read by the poets. At interludes during the readings school children from local primary schools will give a music concert. The earlier start time is to allow for the schools to be involved. Feel free to take a seat after the start if necessary.

Lingmara is a world music community choir, based at The Cause in Chippenham. They are led by the irrepressible Elena Winch who ran a choir in New Zealand before coming back to the UK. Their performance last year received an extraordinarily enthusiastic response.

Gwendolen, an unusually talented young soprano of 24, has to date enjoyed a very busy musical career. She studied music at Worcester College, Oxford, where she sang regularly as soloist and still sings with various choirs, consorts and music groups.

Ever wanted to dance like the characters in a Jane Austen film or TV adaptation? Then join the Jane Austen Dancers for an interactive workshop for beginners of all ages. No partners are required and low heeled or flat shoes are desirable. Please note that the number participating in the workshop will be limited to 30 so book early to avoid disappointment. This event is organised in conjunction with Wiltshire Library Services.

He is originally from Cape Town and studied music at the Drakensberg School of Music. Gwendolen spent her childhood locally in Calstone and was a student at Dauntsey’s.

Saturday 10th October

Vibrant, vivid, and vivacious, The Ardeton Ensemble strives to present music to new audiences with performances of chamber works and solos spanning the 17th century to the present day - from Mozart to movie themes, Bach to Britten, they bring a youthful vitality and originality to every genre.

The ensemble comprises Rebecca Harte - Violin : Sarah Eales - violin : Rachel Johnson - viola & Dury Loveridge - cello. Their Festival debut will include Schubert’s string quartet Death and the Maiden and works by Haydn and Shostakovich.

This increasingly popular local jazz band with Doug Ellis on trombone, Bob Jones on sax and clarinet, Ron Brown on bass guitar, Stef Hardie on drums and Alan Stackman on banjo and rhythm guitar will be performing a programme of their favourite numbers.

Sunday 11th October

Eddy and Pam are very experienced and excellent travel and wildlife photographers. They have already completed a succession of amazing expeditions to places such as The Galapagos, India, Masai Mara and the Antarctic. The photographs they have taken achieved high acclaim in major national and international competitions and they have also achieved recognition and distinctions from the RPS.

They will be back hot foot, or cold foot! from the Arctic after living on an ice-breaker as it moves from Svalbard to the Arctic Circle. This is a unique opportunity to hear about Eddy and Pam’s experiences and to view some of the best wildlife photographs ever taken in the illustrated talk.

Choir practices for the Thanksgiving Service will take place on Friday evenings from mid-September. Details from David Bevan, Music Director, Tel. (01249) 814013. All welcome.

Quarter Peal by bell ringers at St Mary’s Parish Church 5.00pm

St. Mary’s Church, has eight bells, the earliest dating from 1707. The performance for the Festival Service will last approximately 50 minutes, comprising 1,260 different ‘changes’. The bells change order each time they sound, according to a set pattern. No sequence of bells will be repeated during the quarter peal.

Festival Thanksgiving Evensong 6.00pm - St Mary’s Parish Church Lead by Rt Revd Rupert Hoare former Principal of Westcott House Theological College, Cambridge, Area Bishop of Dudley in the Diocese of Worcester and, until his retirement, Dean of Liverpool cathedral. All welcome.

Celebrate the end of the Festival week with wine, canapés and music, the latter to be provided by the outstanding gypsy jazz of the The Gaulois Brothers, Pete

Nicholson and Simon Grimes on acoustic guitars together with Dave Thoroughgood on bass.

They perform in the passionate and uplifting style pioneered by Django Reinhardt in the Parisian cafés and nightspots of the 1930s.

The Box Office runs from Monday September 14th to Friday 9th October. Hours are 9.00am to 4.00pm weekdays, 9.30am to 12 noon on Saturdays. Make sure you purchase tickets for events on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th before the Box Office closes on Friday 9th October.

Please note the Box Office staff will not hold or reserve tickets or deal with postal bookings. Tickets must be paid for and collected at the time of booking.

The wine bar is open before evening events and for interval drinks. Coffee and cakes are also available weekday evenings. Unfortunately, owing to changes in licensing laws we shall be unable to serve alcoholic drinks on the Tuesday or Wednesday.

Come and enjoy a late Coda event in a relaxed atmosphere. Light lunches are also served following the weekday lunchtime concerts.
