CallforindustrysupportforTVETCollegecoursesBackgroundSouthAfricahasaseriousshortageofskillsandthegovernmenthasprioritisedthegrowthof TVET Colleges as part of their strategy to address the skills shortages. Through thefunding of students via the DHET, the national artisan development programme and thebuilding of newTVETCollege campuses the government has shown their commitment tothissectorofthepost-schooleducationallandscape.Troupant’sroleTroupant Publishers, in partnership with Macmillan Education South Africa, developmaterialsforcoursesrunatSouthAfricanTVETColleges.Ourbooks,publishedasprintandebooks, are developed for NC(V) courses and Nated courses offered by colleges in thevocationalandtrainingspace.Weworkwithauthorswhohaveexperienceinthecollegestodevelopbooksintheengineering,business,tourismandeducarespheres.Colleges’needsIn talking to lecturers and college administrators about the challenges of teaching in theTVET College environment we have identified that lecturers are desperate for additionalteachingmaterials toengagestudentsand tomake theconnectionbetweentheclassroomtheory and workplace reality. Our conversations with people in colleges and in businesspointtotheneedtopreparestudentsbetterfortherealitiesoftheworkplace–work-readystudents are easier to integrate into theworkplace. In response to theseneeds, Troupanthaveembarkedonaprojecttoproducelecturersupportpresentationmaterialforallofourtextbooks.Thematerialwillbeembedded inPowerPointpresentations for the lecturer tousewhileteachingfollowingthestructureofthecoursematerialmodules.Wehavealreadycollected extensive diagrams andphotographs to illustrate the concepts being taught, butwewouldliketoincludeSouthAfricanworkplacevideostodemonstrateconceptsfromtheworkplaceandtogivestudentsaclearerideaofwhattoexpectintheworkplace.Somelecturers,inwell-resourcedcolleges,useinternationalYouTubevideostosupplementtheir teaching, butwewould like to use locally-produced videos that show SouthAfricanworkplacesandthatarepopulatedbypeopleworkinginourenvironment.Inaddition,theuseofYouTuberequires theclassroomtohave internet facilitiesandweknowthatmanyruralcollegesdonothavewidespreadaccesstotheinternet(orinsomecasesanyaccessatall).WewilldeliverthePowerPointpresentationsbyDVDoronamemorycardandmakethemavailable fordownload,ensuringthatwhatever the levelofdigitalaccess thecollegehas,wecaterforthem.HowyoucangetinvolvedWearelookingforindustryplayerswhoappreciatetheimportanceofbuildingskillsintheTVET sector to work with us on developing video material relevant to the colleges orallowing us to use material they may have developed for inhouse training or marketingpurposestosupportskillsdevelopmentinthecolleges.We are looking formaterial on engineering, business, public administration, tourism andeducare.Contact: LouiseGrantham,ManagingDirector,TroupantPublishers
