CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: THALESACADEMIA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2010-2011

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM FOR A THALESACADEMIA SCHOLARSHIP

On 15 May 2006, the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and Thales signed an agreement to create ThalesAcademia, a scholarship programme for highly qualified overseas students to study in France. The programme, which is part of the “Quai d’Orsay / Entreprises” scheme with private enterprise operated by the French Foreign Ministry, is a public/private partnership that provides optimal conditions for living and studying in France, including a personalised welcome and mentoring. Candidates are selected jointly by the Ministry, Thales and partner business and engineering schools. Now in its fifth year, the ThalesAcademia scholarship programme, which is funded jointly by Thales and the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, is open to students enrolled in an overseas institution of higher education who are from China, India, Russia or Brazil, countries in which Thales does business. Only candidates with the nationality of one of these countries are eligible for the programme. Candidates who also have French nationality (bi-nationals) are not eligible. For the 2010/2011 academic year, 25 scholarships will be awarded: 7 for Indian students, 7 for Chinese students, 6 for Russian students and 5 for Brazilian students. The ThalesAcademia scholarship programme is aimed at students with a Master 2 level (preferred) or Master 1.

AREAS AND LEVEL OF STUDY The following areas are covered by the ThalesAcademia programme:

- Engineering sciences - Business and management ThalesAcademia scholarships are granted to students who wish to come to France to obtain a Post Master’s Certificate or a Master of Science from a graduate school or university that is a programme partner.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Nationality: The ThalesAcademia programme is open to Brazilian, Chinese, Indian and Russian students. Only candidates of these nationalities are eligible for the scholarship. Candidates who also have French nationality (bi-nationals) are not eligible. Age: candidates must be no more than 30 years of age in the year in which they are selected. French language: a good command of French is not required, but it is a significant “plus” in the selection process and an objective to be obtained by the end of the student’s stay in France. However, fluency in French may be required by the host institution of higher education if courses are taught in French. Other scholarships: candidates who have previously qualified for a scholarship from the French government or from another company are not eligible for this programme. Candidates must have no links with a private enterprise upon their arrival in France. Successful ThalesAcademia candidates are required to complete one of the courses selected for the programme at one of the partner institutions either entirely or mainly in France. Candidates must apply to enrol at one of the following French institutes of higher education that are partners to the Thales Academia programme:

• Engineering schools: Ecole Centrale Paris, Ecole Polytechnique, ENSIETA, ISAE, MINES ParisTech, TELECOM ParisTech.

• Business and management schools: HEC Paris and ESSEC • Universities (management): Université Paris-Dauphine (business and management) and Université

Paris-Sud 11 (sciences)

Programmes of study offered by ThalesAcademia partner institutions are detailed in a table in the appendix. Applications for enrolment on one of the proposed courses of study at a partner school or university must be received no later than 10 April 2010. This is also the deadline for the present ThalesAcademia scholarship application, which must be submitted to the French Embassy in the student’s home country. Proof of application (or admission) issued by the student’s chosen place of study MUST BE INCLUDED in the ThalesAcademia application file. * Admission calendars for the partner schools and universities are given in the Appendix.

SELECTION CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES In each of the four countries listed, representatives from the French Embassy (the Cultural Relations and Cooperation advisor) and the Economic Mission work with representatives from Thales and from local schools and universities to find candidates. Final selection of programme beneficiaries is made in France by a selection committee composed of representatives from the partner establishments, Thales and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. The following criteria are taken into account for the final selection: − excellence of the candidate, as reflected by his/her prior university experience, − the candidate’s career goals, − the candidate’s level of French, − admission on one of the proposed courses of study at a partner school or university. To decide between applicants with similar skills and qualifications, preference will be given to students from low-income backgrounds. The selection committee draws up a list of the candidates chosen. Students are then required to ensure that they have been formally enrolled at one of the French institutions of higher education involved in the programme. The selection committee’s proceedings are not made public, its decisions are final and no reasons shall be given for the decisions made.
