Dear Readers, We are very pleased to see so many people attending the Saturday morning market next to the DR church on Saturday mornings. Judy Bumstead started the market a few weeks ago to enable more buyers and sellers to convene for the sale of goods. It's a growing trend and we are keen to help establish a sustainable thriving market. Congratulations on a job well done Judy, keep up the good work.

Retief, your resignation sent ripples through the office because you were everyone's favourite. Calitzdorp was lucky to benefit from your talent. They say that people are the real assets of a company and I never realized the true meaning behind this until the day you handed in your resignation. It has been a pleasure having someone like you in the team. Your absence is our loss. Thank you for putting in all the hard work. We are sad to see you go but we are happy to have had the chance to work with a dynamic individual like yourself. We wish you good luck and success in your next role. All the best. Die Saterdagoggendmark doen goed, liewe ondersteuners, maar ons kan nie te gerus raak nie. As ons die mark volhoubaar wil bedryf, sal ons meer mense meer betekenisvol moet betrek. My vraag aan julle is, wat kan ons aan die boeregemeenskap en aan Bergsig se mense bied? Oor die algemeen het die boere voldoende voedsel en is hulle in staat om dit self te verwerk. Hulle het hulle eie heerlike groen vyekonfyt en hulle maak lekker gegeurde vetkoeke. Lae-inkomste huishoudings, wat dikwels vroue aan die hoof het, kan nie sommer 5 boereworsrolle en n chiabatta bekostig nie. Hier is maar min van ons inkommers. Wat kan jy bied om hierdie mense na die mark toe te bring? Ek verwelkom enige idees. Hierdie week: Koel en dro weer. Meisie is weer terug met haar pannekoek. Tannie Alma bak die pad na jou goeie gesondheid. Die Toerismeburo gaan boereworsrolle verkoop en die Droomprojek het plantsteggies. Colyn en Sean het gegeurde muffins en warm sjokoladedrankies. Anne, Mize, Sandy, Marina, Pam en Penny sal sorg dat jou koskas vol bly. Ons is opgewonde oor Hennie en Mara Smit wat vars spinasie, origanum, rooi- en groenrissies, suurlemoene asook twee hoenderhane kom verkoop. Het jy al hulle Vleilandkwepers gerooster of hulle boontjies geproe fantasties! Juanita is hierdie Saterdag n fietsryweduwee, maar sy voorsien soos gewoonlik tee, koffie en ontbytrolletjies. Blackie en Michael het versamelbare versamelstukke. Blackie ken hierdie soort ding. By die marktafel het ons van Andrew se organiese groente en ander vars groentes, asook van Kevin-met-die-groen-vingers se inheemse plante en Shelagh se kruie. Ons het ook amandels, heuning, olywe en olyfolie. Ons sien uit om julle daar te sien. Judy

Nasi Goreng

Nasi Goreng is 'n Indoniesiese gereg wat op sy eie as 'n gereg bedien kan word, of saam met slaai. Dit is baie maklik om te maak en neem nie langer as 30 minute om voor te berei nie. Bestanddele:

teelepel neutmuskaat

teelepel fyn naeltjies

teelepel fyn swartpeper

1 koppie kookwater

3 4 koppies gaar rys

2kg hoender borsies / varkvleis blokkies

250g sampioene, in skyfies gesny

250g murgpampoentjies, in skyfies gesny

1 groot ui, fyngekap

250g bacon, gesnipper

1 groot wortel, geskil en in ringe gesny

1 koppie ertjies

sout na smaak

Metode: 1. Meng die

neutmuskaat, fyn naeltjies en fyn swartpeper met die koppie kookwater.

2. Braai die volgende items afsonderlik in 'n groot pot en skep dit elke keer uit nadat dit gebraai is en hou eenkant: hoenderborsies, sampioene, murgpampoentjies, ui, bacon en wortels.

3. Meng al die gebraaide bestanddele met die rys en gooi die kookwater met speserye bo-oor en kook net deur.

4. Voeg ertjies by. 5. Geur met sout na

smaak.

Who is Helen Keller?

Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 June 1, 1968) was an American author, political

o Saterdagoggendmark Die Toerisme kantoor en Droom Projek het Saterdagoggend, 11 Mei 2013, die mark bygewoon langs die NG kerk. Dit was baie suksesvol en ons

wil graag almal aanmoedig om dit te besoek. U sal aangenaam verras wees.

o Kersboom skoendoos projek 2013

Dis weer hierdie tyd van die jaar. Ons wil vroegtydig begin om skoendose in te samel vir die projek, sodat ons meer mense kan bereik. Ons het

reeds 'n paar gevulde skoendose ontvang en sien uit om van die publiek te hoor. Onderaan sal jul 'n lys vind van items wat benodig word. Moet asb

nie die skoendose sel nie, ons wil graag deur almal gaan om te verseker dat alles in plek is om u en die kinders te beskerm. Plak asb ook 'n nota op

die gevulde skoendoos met u naam en telefoon nommer op, sodat ons u kan uitnooi na die kersboom gebeurtenis in Desember. Dit sal heerlik wees

om u daar te h. U kan dan ook sien hoe die geskenke uitgedeel word en hoe die kinders dit waardeer. Indien u 'n spesifieke naam op die lys van

behoeftige kinders wil plaas, kontak ons gerus by 044 2133 775 (Jad of Erina).

Ons wil graag vir tannie Dais bedank vir die skenking van al die skoendose wat sy vir ons versamel het. Dit help ons regtig baie en sal die projek

bespoedig. Ons waardeer al tannie se moeite.

Die VLV dames het verlede jaar beplan om ons te help met hierdie projek dames, jul le skoendose is reeds gereed vir u by die Toerisme kantoor.

Kom haal dit gerus en neem julle tyd om soveel te vul as wat jul voor kans sien.

Skoendose met persoonlike geskenke in vir Kerstyd aan minderbevoorregte kinders.

Hierdie is 'n gemeenskaps projek vir Calitzdorp, asook 'n kans vir organisasies soos VLV, Boek klubs, GPF, ens. om betrokke te raak by die Droom

Projek.

Hoe om 'n skoendoos voor te berei:

a. Soek 'n le skoendoos b. Versier die skoendoos

Draai die skoendoos toe, maar draai die deksel apart toe sodat dit opgelig kan word. Versier met tekeninge, verf, uitknipsels en

plakkers vir 'n unieke "keep sake". Die dose sal ondersoek word om te kyk of alles in orde is vir die kinders.

c. Vul die skoendoos met geskenke Alle items moet NUUT en GEPAS wees vir kinders.

Die volgende items word benodig vir elke skoendoos:

tandepasta en tandeborsel

koekie seep en waslap

lekkergoed (verkieslik sagte lekkers Bv: wine gums, sours, ens.)

'n Speelding (Bv: soft toy, tennisbal, finger puppet, yo-yo, boublokkies, trokke en karretjies, poppe, ens. Vir die tieners kan Bv. sonbrille, grimering, spuitgoed wat in 'n ziplock sakkie versel moet wees, ingesluit word)

opvoedkundige items (Bv: penne, potlode, skerpmaker, inkleurboek, notaboekie, pennesakkie, kryte, lineal, 100-stuk legkaart, sakrekenaar, ens)

d. MOENIE die volgende insluit nie: Sjokolade, blikkies kos, koek, medisyne of vitamines, breekbare kos, speelgoed geweertjies of messe, glas houers, spiltjies,

vloeistof, albasters, skerp voorwerpe, selfone, items wat met batterye werk)

e. Merk jou skoendoos: Plak 'n plakker op die doos om aan te dui vir watter ouderdom en geslag dit geskik is, en of u opvoedkundige items ingesluit het of nie.

f. Waarheen om die skoendoos te neem: Laai jou skoendoos/e af by die Toerisme kantoor in Voortrekkerstraat 3 by die Shell Motorhawe voor 7 Desember 2012.

Maak asb vir ons 'n nota met u naam en nommer op sodat ons u kan uitnooi na die uitdeel van die geskenke in Desember. Dit sal heerlik wees om u

daar te h en ons glo ook vir u om te sien hoe bly die kinders is wanneer hul die geskenke ontvang.

deelnemers om teen 14h00 daar te wees. Elke deelnemer / groep word gevra om 2 items te lewer. Die oorspronklike een waarmee jy ingeskryf het en

'n ander een wat jy verkies. Ons vra ook dat almal voorbereid kom sodat alles vlot kan verloop.

We are now serving delicious savoury muffins and scrumptious individual quiches as well as the ever popular spicy Dutch Apple cake, melt in your mouth, seriously Chocolaty Chocolate cake, delectable Apple Frangipane and luscious Carrot & Pineapple cake with Orange syrup. I use only butter and free range eggs in my baking and my quiches are made using dairy cream. I am happy to host special events such as Birthday parties for adults only. Red Stone Hills and adjacent properties are situated on the fringe of the semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo. The most important

habitats for birds include (a) the open karroid veld dominated by s tunted trees, mainly Gwarrie Euclea undulata, and low succulent

shrubs; (b) the dense thickets on the hillsides, where the rainfall is higher; (c) the fynbos which occurs on the summits of the hills

and where the Waboom Protea nitida dominates; (d) several permanent streams, lined by both indigenous and alien vegetation,

which transverse the area providing a habitat for birds that do not normally occur in this dry environment; (e) man-made habitats

such as the lucerne fields and poplar woods which support birds that would not otherwise enter the Little Karoo.

The best time for birders to visit the area is after substantial rains in spring and early summer. No bird check-list is ever complete

and the compilers would appreciate receiving information on additional species that have been positively identified.

Species: African Darter

Spotted: recorded January to December; visitor.

The African Darter (Anhinga rufa ), sometimes called

the Snakebird, is a water bird of sub-Saharan Africa. It is also

a member of the darter family, Anhingidae, and is closely

related toAmerican (Anhinga anhinga), Oriental (Anhinga

melanogaster), and Australian (Anhinga novaehollandiae)

African Darter

Description: The male is mainly glossy black with white streaking, but females and immature birds are browner. The African Darter differs in appearance from the American Darter most recognisably by its thin white lateral neck stripe against a rufous

background colour. The pointed bill should prevent confusion with cormorants.

It is an 80 cm long cormorant-like fish-eating species with a very long neck, like other anhingas.

Distribution: The African Darter is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa wherever large bodies of water occur. The bird used to breed there in breeding colonies with Pygmy Cormorant and Sacred Ibis and other waterfowl. One subspecies, the Levant

Darter (Anhinga rufa chantrei), occurred at Lake Amik (Amik Gl) in south-central Turkey, in Hula valley lake and marshes in

northern Israel and in the marshes of the lower Euphrat and Tigris rivers in southern Iraq. The Turkish population disappeared

during the 1930s, the Israeli population during Hula drainage in the 1950s the Iraquian population during the Gulf War in the 1990s.

Behaviour: This species builds a stick nest in a tree and lays 36 eggs. It often nests with herons,egrets and cormorants. It often swims with only the neck above water, hence the common name snakebird. This, too, is a habit shared with the other

anhingas. Unlike many other waterbirds the feathers of the African Darter do not contain any oil and are therefore not waterproof.

Because of this, the bird is less positively buoyant and its diving capabilities are enhanced. After diving for fish, the feathers can

become waterlogged. In order to be able to fly and maintain heat insulation it needs to dry its feathers. Thus the African Darter is

often seen sitting along the waterside spreading its wings and drying its feathers in the wind and the sun along with cormorants

which may share its habitat.

Na twee en 'n half jaar, het Soeterus die punt bereik waar dit in bekwame bestuurders se hande gelaat kan word. Frikkie en Marietjie Vermeulen van Robin's Nest Interiors op Oudtshoorn, gaan die bestuur oorneem van die Soeterus. Die gastehuis sal voortgaan met besigheid soos in die verlede en ons vertrou dat almal hul net soveel sal ondersteun soos voorheen. Retief en Louis trek in die eerste week van Julie terug Stellenbosch toe waar hul 'n nuwe projek gaan aanpak. Calitzdorp - Groenfontein - Kruisrivier

A weekend adventure

The walk :

Arrive on Friday and spend the night at one of the Guest Houses, where dinner bed and breakfast are included.

Saturday morning after breakfast, a walk through town, on the historical meander with Marlene Robson. Then it's on to the Groenfontein Road with

your Guide Kevin Koen. Lunch at the Oude Postkantoor, with an afternoon and evening at living waters (home of the donkey trail).

Sunday morning, it's on with the walk, arriving at Roger and Phyllis at Kruisrivier at aroud lunch time, for a bite to eat. From here it's into the bus,

and back to Calitzdorp, arriving at around 15H00.

The Groenfontein area is home to a fantastic diversity of plants. The hike meanders through different habitat types each with its own unique plant

communities. A few interesting plants along the route are:

The Tongue plants (Glottiphyllum species),

Candle plant (Senecio articularis),

Campfire crassula (Crassula capitella),

Concertina plant (Crassula rupestris) and

Rapunzel bush (Sarcostemma viminale) to name but a few.

Please note

We require a minimum of 6 walkers, and a maximum of 8. Should you have a larger group, please enquire via email to info@calitzdorp.net, and

special arrangements can be made.

The cost per person is R1850-00. Upon completion of the booking form, payment instructions will be sent. You will also be informed if the

minimum/maximum number requirements are not met.

Kraaldoring Gallery will be hosting an exhibition during the Port Festival period from

Thursday 14th June until Sunday noon 16th June. Hours 10:00 - 17:00

We will be serving a complimentary glass of port to visitors.

o Petition speed limiting on Voortrekker street

We, the citizens of the town of Calitzdorp, petition the towns Municipality to install, as a matter of urgency,

speed limiting measures or devices in Voortrekker Street.

We are deeply concerned about the number of vehicles traveling in both directions with no regard for the

60km/hour speed restriction. This is particularly evident after sunset.

It is suggested that the installation of Stop Signs, traffic calmers, traffic circles, electronic cameras and red

warning lights be considered.

It is agreed that suitable measures be implemented urgently to prevent any major traffic incidents from taking

place.

We demand that the Calitzdorp Municipality take notice of the residents concerns and report back to them by

no later than Friday 24th

June 2013.

CALITZDORP NOT LOOKING FESTIVE ENOUGH

We received a number of complaints last year about the town not looking festive enough, also complaints about Calitzdorp not looking festive at

all until the last couple of days before the festival. I know that the Dream Project people are always working towards to improving Calitzdorp

maybe we can all make an effort to help. Zelma also suggested colourful fabric flags in main streets of Calitzdorp. We have an extra banner

available this year I am investigating putting it up in Oudtshoorn. Please let us have your input and ideas before the next meeting (Tuesday 21

May 15h00 at Boplaas).

Alle Calitzdorp Toerisme lede wat aktiwiteite aanbied, word hiermee hartlik genooi om hul produk gratis bekend te stel by die info stalletjie tydens

die Portfees. Die Toerisme kantoor gaan 'n dubbel stalletjie aanbied waarin ons graag spesifiek hierdie jaar wil fokus op al die aktiwiteite in en om

Calitzdorp. Elke persoon wat graag meer blootstelling aan sy produk wil bied, sal beurte kry om die ekstra info stalletjie wat beskikbaar gestel word

hierdie jaar te beman. Dit sal langs die Toerisme kantoor se stalletjie wees by die ingang van die Portfees hekke. Die stalletjie sal versier word

sodat dit soos 'n aantreklike sit-hoekie lyk (rusbank met koffietafel) waarbinne die gaste rustig met 'n koppie koffie kan sit en brosjures deurlees of

gesels met die persoon aan diens oor sy/haar aktiwiteit. Dankie aan die Donkey Trail, Art route en Historiese staproete wat reeds hul plek bespreek

het by die stalletjie. Ons is baie opgewonde oor die blootstelling.
