    Spotlight on QualityShow and Sale Recap

    Despite average prices be-ing off a couple of percent ascompared to last year, this yearsSpotlight on Quality Show andSale was a success.

    High selling heifer at $3,450was LC Royal Katherine 8955consigned by Lucky Clover

    Shorthorns. High selling steerat $1,400.00 was consigned byBrooke Bennett.

    Thanks to all of the consign-ers, buyers and special thanksto Hugh Mooney, our judge, and

    Alpha Gipe and Family, our orga-nizers.

    Spotlight on Quality2010 Dates

    There will be no change to theSOQ sale date and location thisyear. The SOQ sale will again beheld the last Saturday in Oct, the30th-31st at the Amador CountyFairgrounds in Plymouth, CA.

    CSBA Annual MeetingRecap

    The CSBA Annual Meetingwas a night of great food, greatcompany and great happenings.Various reports were given andthe silent auction was held. Themembership reelected GregCardey, Gary Witte and Gary Roseand selected Tim Whit eld, all to

    serve 3 year terms on the Boardof Directors.

    The Board elected Greg Cardeyas President, Cruz Valdez as VicePresident and Tim Whit eld asSec/Treas at its Spotlight on Qual-ity Meeting.

    Greg had previously servedas Sec./Treas. for 9 years. He islooking forward to his promotion.

    Cruz has been Vice Presidentfor the last few years.

    Tim is Treasurer of the FresnoUnderground Gardens Conser-vancy in Fresno and comes to usfrom Sunny Day Shorthorns ofMerced, CA.

    Mike Bennett Elected toASA Board of Directors

    Mike Bennett of Ducor, CA waselected to the American Short-horn Association Board of Direc-tors at the Annual Meeting held atthe National Western Stock Showin Denver. Congratulations Mike.

    Hello and hope you had justenjoyed Happy Holidays with fam-ily and friends. You may noticethat this Presidents Messageis not from Gary Witte as it hadbeen for the past 9 years. Yes,Gary served our CSBA Board ofDirectors as President for 9 years,undoubtedly some kind of CSBArecord. The CSBA Board thankshim for that extended term ofservice.

    I am Greg Cardey, newlyelected President. For the past 9

    years I served as the Secretary-Treasurer for the CSBA until thisrecent promotion. Cruz Valdezis still serving as CSBA Vice-Pres-ident and we are pleased to havenew CSBA Board of Director TimWhit eld as our new Secretary-Treasurer. I have had a lifelong

    involvement with the Shorthornbreed and look forward to work-ing with our board in communi-cating the thoughts of our mem-bership and serving the Shorthornbreed on the West Coast. Pleasefeel free to get in touch with me

    with any thoughts or ideas on howour Association can improve onwhat it does.

    Winter got a late start this yearbut I am sure we are all happy tosee precipitation coming regu-larly lately and look forward to

    a relatively wet year. (Fingerscrossed!) With this time of yearcomes the American ShorthornAssociation annual meeting inDenver. This year 2 CSBA mem-bers ran for the ASA Board ofDirectors, Alpha Gipe and MikeBennett. Congratulations to Mike

    Bennett and thanks to both of youfor representing us at the national

    meeting. The ASA has also hireda new Western Field Representa-tive, Jake Alden, who will be work-ing out of the Omaha of ce. Welook forward to Jake getting famil-iar with Shorthorns and Shorthornoperations on the West Coast.

    Many of you probably know thisalready but the Junior Jackpotcircuit is back in full swing. (Doesit ever really end?) Please makea point of getting out to theshows to support the kids when a

    jackpot show comes to your area.Shorthorn youth are the future of

    our breed and support for them isnecessary and appreciated. Seeyou there!

    Newsletter Committee - As youcan see, the Shorthorn Quarterlynewsletter is in the process of aredesign. CSBA Sec/Treas TimWhit eld is looking for a few good

    people to serve on the Newsletter Committee to help modernize thenewsletter and help with content. Asfar as time committments go, therewill be a few telephone brainstorm-ing conferences and lots of emailssent back and forth. There might be

    a meeting or two if there is interest.CSBA Status - CSBA President

    c. Advertisements: Director Witte suggested that we advertisein other magazines besides Paci cShowcase. He also wanted to knowabout yers. President Cardey toldthe Board that this year adver-tisements were placed in Paci cShowcase, California Cattleman (incooperation with ASA) and with the

    National Association in their list of sales. Sec./Treas. Whit eld statedthat an email blast was sent out tothe CSBA email list as well as being

    published to the website. PresidentCardey suggested that as animalsare sold via private treaty to juniors,

    that breeders collect email addressesas contacts and send them to Whit-eld to add to the database.

    d. Flyers: Director Rosesuggested that we send yers toconsigners and members to placein local feed stores. In addition,Director Rose requested that a yer

    be made up and sent to membersand consigners to place in local feedstores that collect email addressesfor Whit eld to add to the emaildatabase. Sec./Treas. Whit eld vol -unteered to design these yers and

    place them on the Members section

    of the CSBA website for membersto download, print out and place atlocal feed stores.

    2) California Shorthorn BreedersAssociation corporate status: Presi-dent Cardey reported that CSBAhas been operating under the radar

    and that all money and account-ing information has been under hisname and social security number.President Cardey and Sec./Treas.Whit eld will be going through thesteps to legitimize the organizationstarting with bringing the organiza-tion back in compliance with theCalifornia Secretary of State and

    ling the necessary paperwork.Sec./Treas. Whit eld stated that heneeded authorization from the boardto seek a new bank account fromPremier Valley Bank in Merced inthe organizations name after theorganizations status is restored. Itwas suggested that a Cash Depositaccount was opened in addition tothe Checking account. Director

    Noble moved to authorize Sec./Treas. Whit eld to seek a checkingand cash deposit account for the

    non-pro t corporation at Premier Valley Bank in Merced. Seconded by Director Mooney. Motion car-ried via voice vote.

    3) Sec./Treas. Whit eld reportedon membership structure. Ques-tioning the $15.00 promotional feeand the non-voting membershipand how it can be confusing attimes. Director Mooney suggestedthat in the process of restoring thecorporate status and seeking 501(c)

    The meeting was called to order at 9:15 a.m. by President Gary Witte.Attendance:

    PRESENT: A. Gipe | G. Cardey | C. Noble | C. Valdez | D. Pluth | F.Bigelow | G. Rose | T. Whit eld | M. Bigelow | H. Mooney | G. Witte

    ABSENT: K. GudelElections:

    Gary Witte decided to not seek reelection as President. Director Gipemoved to nominate Sec.-Treas. Cardey. Seconded by Director Noble.

    Nomination carried by voice vote. Seeing no further nominations, Presi-dent Witte closed nominations and Cardey was elected President.

    President Cardey thanked Director Witte for his years of service asPresident.

    Vice President Valdez decided to seek re-election. President Cardeyasked for Nominations for Vice President. Seeing none, PresidentCardey closed nominations and Valdez was reelected as Vice President.

    President Cardey asked for nominations for recently vacated Secre-tary/Treasurer. Director Witte moved to nominate Director Whit eld.Seconded by Director Gipe. Nomination carried by voice vote. Seeingno further nominations, President Cardey closed nomination and Whit-

    eld was elected Secretary/Treasurer.Reports and Consent:As outgoing Sec./Treas., President Cardey presented his minutes for

    board approval up to the last meeting held at California State Fair inSeptember. Director F. Bigelow moved to approve the minutes as pre-sented. Director Valdez seconded. Motion carried by voice vote.

    As outgoing Sec./Treas., President Cardey presented the Treasurer Report. The cash balance before the Spotlight on Quality Show and Salewas $8,720.71. Director Rose moved to approve the Treasurers Reportas presented. Director Gipe seconded. Motion carried by voice vote.New Business:

    1)Junior County Fair Outstanding Shorthorn Exhibitor Awards: Presi-dent Cardey called on Director Gipe to relay his idea for this award agift certi cate/credit of $50.00 to the Outstanding Shorthorn Exhibitor ateach County Fair for use at the Spotlight on Quality Sale. Gary moved

    to run a Outstanding Shorthorn Exhibitor Award Gift Certi cate programgiving Outstanding Exhibitors a $50.00 credit for use at Spotlight onQuality that expires at the conclusion of the Spotlight on Quality Sale
