THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER:

ED DIXON

Well everyone, I guess this is the time for

me to “hit the trail”, so to speak. Thanks for

having me be your president for the past

couple of years. I hope I’ve left the club in a

strong position, both financially and in mem-

bership growth. Not being a person of many words, I just want you

to know what a privilege it is being part of such a hardworking,

friendly group of folks. I’m not going away, just taking a breather.

You’ll be seeing me at upcoming field trials.

I want to wish the incoming Board my best for continued success in

making the California Brittany Club the best of the bunch.

Thanks again for everything. So long!

FROM YOUR EDITOR The “good” news is that I’ve enjoyed being the Editor of the Club’s Newslet-ter for the past several years.

I AM A FIELD DOG

My name is Annie. I believe in destiny. My father’s father’s father was a field dog; and so was my mother’s

mother’s mother. I come from a long line of Hall of Fame field champions. This has and will always be my path. Even

though I am a puppy, I have a destiny. My name is Annie. I am a field dog.

My name is Annie. I like to point and I run really fast. I am like the wind as I cross over hills and valleys. I can

smell fur or feather long before it is seen. Even though I am a teenager, if there is a bird, I stop and I point. I was

born this way. It is called instinct. I stop, I point and I wait for my handler. My name is Annie. I am a field dog.

My name is Annie. Today I went to a hunt test to check my skills in the field. A lady walked by with her friend.

“Look, there is a puppy!” The other lady laughs and says, “Oh that is just Annie. She is just a field dog.” I smile, be-

cause that is what I am. But my Mom does not smile. Her eyes are wet and I don’t know why. But when I am awarded

with four orange ribbons in one weekend, my Mom smiled big and hugged me. My name is Annie. I am a field dog.

My name is Annie. I am at my first field trial. I am entered in a puppy stake even though each competitor is

required to be at least six months old. I wait and I wait for my turn. My Dad secures a special collar on my neck. It

lets him know where I am at all of the times. The men saddle up and the whistle blows. My Dad says, “Hunt’em up An-

nie!” I run over hills and valleys. I smell and then find a bird in the bush and I point. My Dad flushes the bird and I

stand strong. I am released to run again. The judges whisper and write on a paper. We return to camp and we wait

again. They call the names of other dogs. White, yellow and red ribbons followed by applause. I feel tension in the air

as I wait. Then I hear my name. My color is blue. My name is Annie. I am a field dog.

My name is Annie. My Dad says I am too good for him. But I know he is good and I don’t understand. He sends

me to a professional team so that I can learn to be a great field dog. The teachers keep me for months; I travel and

compete throughout the Western United States. My parents visit me and are handed different color ribbons during

each visit. They bring me presents and hug me. When they leave, they cry. My name is Annie. I am a field dog.

My name is Annie. I like to compete. Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose; but what matters most is how I

run; the decisions I make, the things I smell and the ground I cover. I don’t care about ribbons. I care about finding a

bird and the freedom of it all. I am doing what I was born to do. As I run, I collect points. I need ten. I hear my teach-

er call my Mom. He says, "Annie had nine points, right?" She says, “Yes”. My teacher says, “Congratulations, she now

has eleven.” They are all proud and I get a treat. My name is Annie. I am a field champion.

My name is Annie. I am no longer living part time with my teachers. I am home with my family and they are joy-

ful to have me home. They take me on trips and runs and we have lots of fun. Then they take me to meet the dog that

will be my husband. I smell him; he smells me. He is an Amateur National Champion. That means he is a dog of great-

ness. His name is Sonny. We become best friends for three days and then he leaves. My name is Annie. I am a field

dog.

My name is Annie. I am hungry all of the time. I eat as much as I want whenever I want. I take vitamins and

visit my Doctor ever couple weeks. My belly is getting big and I don’t know why. After two months, my belly swells and

I have trouble sleeping. Then it happens. I am wet and I clean myself. At the break of dawn I suddenly realize a dog

can have more than one destiny. I am a field dog, but this is so much more important than that. I feel an enormous

sense of responsibility and love as I look down and see what I have beyond the field. I am the creator of life. My name

is Annie. I am a Mother.
