DR. JOHN BARCELLONABIOGRAPHY

JOHN BARCELLONA is Professor of Flute and Director of Woodwind Studies at California State University Long

Beach. He teaches doctoral students at Claremont Graduate University and is flutist with the internationally acclaimed Westwood Wind Quintet (recordings on Columbia, Crystal and WIM labels). The Quintet has recently recorded the 24 complete wind quintets by Anton Reicha – a 12 CD set on Crystal. He recorded a CD of Chrisopher Caliendo’s trio music with the Caliendo Trio: Christopher Caliendo on guitar and Ian Flatt on cello.

An active freelance musician in southern California, he has played Principal Flute with the Pacific Symphony and with many international ballet companies. His solo album, Is this the way to Carnegie Hall? (with Calvin Smith on horn) was nominated to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for a Grammy award. John is a former member of the Moyse Duo with pianist, Louis Moyse. He has been a Muramatsu Performing Artist for over 25 years.

He has written a regular column in Flute Talk magazine entitled, “The Flute Doctor”. This is the first time the magazine has run a complete flute pedagogy series of articles. John has taught and performed in many music festivals, including the Rio International Cello Encounter in Brazil and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival for the past 28 years.

John Barcellona received his Bachelor of Music from the Hartt School of Music, Master of Arts from California State University Long Beach, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California.

Rider requirements for Caliendo World Music Trio w/dancers1.If hall has excellent natural acoustics, then there is no need for mics or amplification.2.If otherwise, it will be necessary to use a PA system with microphones for flute, guitar and cello instruments. A sound check and engineer will also need to be provided.3.(3) armless chairs and (2) music stands4.Whether the concert is performed in natural acoustics or with microphones, a "stage" mic for Christopher Caliendo will be required to enable him to talk to the audience between selections and to introduce special guest artists including:

(2) dancers NOTE: Tango Dancers require a marley floor unless the stage surface is a sprung wood or otherwise suitable for dancing.

(1) Kristin Caliendo - special flute guest artist.5. Sound Check/Rehearsal – Access to the venue is requested for up to 1 hour, at a time suitable for the artist and the venue (based on travel schedule) to assess acoustics.HOSPITALITY/LODGING1. (3) single rooms at a 3 star standard quality hotel near the venue. Ensemble is Los Angeles Based. Single performances East of the Mississippi will necessitate lodging for 2 nights. (5) single rooms, if artist providing tango dancers. 2. Hot meal for up to 5 persons, served 90 minutes prior to performance. A meal buyout of $25 per person is acceptable.
