Cheer up all ye who have this evening watched the bizzard-like weather dump snow where it had already disappeared. The first day of spring is the 20th of March - says so on the calendar.... a week away. However, more importantly, April is a

chocolate month!

April also heralds the season of 2018 quilt shows - ours included. Did you notice the num-ber of shows in our letter? Its like a great big "Show and Tell" all of which represent hours and hours of work.

April and May are also for decision making; who do we wish to entrust with the many responsibilities that make our guild enjoyable, creative and so worthwhile? If you feel that you have needed talents to share or indeed, to improve on a present situation now is the time for you to put your best foot forward and offer your services. There are Executive positions/Chairs just waiting for you to claim them. Remember, it is possible to challenge the present occupant of a chair or even another candidate if you feel strongly that you would do a better job! Wow - we might even have our very own battle à la Queen's Park. But I descend into silliness. If you wish to effect a change, the time might be ripe.

I know that a number of us are looking forward to Bethany Garner's workshop and to see her presentation during the April meeting. I've seen her colours - spring is coming. Happy Easter to all.

School for Young Moms. She will collect quilts at the April and

May meetings and hopes to receive 25 quilts by May 2nd for

distribution at a Mothers’ Day party at Peterborough Family

If you are looking for a place to donate sewing related items and fabric of all types, please consider the "Green Shop." It is part of PCSS, Peterborough Communication Support Systems, a non-profit agency that provides support services to deaf/non-verbal individuals living with intellectual disabilities. The Green Shop is a collective that teaches skills and produces practical goods which are then sold in the community. They are open 9 – 3, Monday – Friday . The Green Shop is located at 192 B Hunter Street, just a touch east of Aylmer Street, right beside the Running Room, at the end of a laneway. We are still collecting yarn for Hooks & Needles, Lakefield who knit a variety of baby items for preemies in third world countries. Lynda Hamersma

If you have scraps of batting...even tiny ones or any scraps suitable for stuffing, Helen Blaskievich is collecting them for someone who is making beds for the Humane Society & other pet rescue organizations.

The World Quilt Competition XXII will be judged August 16-18, 2018 at World Quilt New England in Manchester, New Hampshire. I am the Canadian Coordinator for the competition .

The deadline for contest entrants to postmark or email completed entries is May 14, 2018. You may mail your entry and images (on a CD), or scan and email your entry form to me at [email protected] along with the full view and close up images of your quilt.

Program/Workshop

Upcoming Workshops are now open to non-members. Contact: Pat for information Please note: workshops are prepaid. Tuesday April 3 – Flat Dyeing to Quilt – With Bethany Garner – 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This fun and easy dye process uses plastic sheets on tables and separating fabric as we play with simple techniques for beautiful hand-dyed fabrics. Learn to dye in containers, the alternative to the messy and often unpredictable bags and dye pots. The dye, in individual containers is lined up along the side of the work tables for each student's individual use... and then the magic begins... We blend colours to create beautiful original ombre fabric. Bethany says “all of my students LOVE this process & it teaches them that they have the freedom to dye at home in a small space, with skills learned at this workshop day together”. She provides a comprehensive handout, tips for buying dyes & mixing combinations for colour palettes, and finishing techniques using an easy-at-home process for setting, washing and rinsing by hand. Students dye 24 pieces (up to 6 yds) of gorgeous multi-coloured 100% cotton fabric. Students require white 100% cotton fabrics, pre-washed and “ready to dye”, along with a simple list of easily available supplies.

Cost: $50 Kit fee: $20 Prepared fabric from Bethany (if desired): $9/metre Limit: 20 participants

Thursday April 5 – Using Colour Can’t Scare Me! – With Bethany Garner – 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m If you’ve ever been stuck choosing fabric, or been dissatisfied with results of your colour matching, now Bethany will help us calm our colour anxieties. With a kit of small bits of fabrics in many colours to play with, we’ll create a "colour map" which will help with confidence to start new projects. We will combine fabrics from our stash – those “you’d love to have the courage to work with” - and our newfound knowledge to develop a small piece that will get us playing with colour. We receive a complete guidebook for using colour and can take notes throughout the day to begin a new relationship with our own fabrics. We’ll learn what to look for in the fabric store and when NOT to buy certain colours and why!

Cost: $45 Limit: 24 participants

April Project

Log Cabin Variations with Carole Hlibka

I have given you the number of strips required for 2 or 3 blocks so that you will have an idea of how many strips of fabric you will need based on the size of quilt you are planning to make.

Variety in pattern and design in both dark and light strips gives a scrappier look.

Good contrast is needed.

10” finished block: for 3 blocks you will need 2½ strips* of Dark fabric and 2 strips* of Light fabric

14” finished block : for 2 blocks you will need 3 strips* of Dark fabric and 2 strips* of Light fabric.

Centre square (yellow in picture): use a colour that works with your other colours and will show up well in your design. You get 16 centre squares out of 1 strip* (enough for 16 blocks).

*All strips are cut 2.5”x WOF.

Shorter strips may be used as well, as all will be cut into logs. Wait to cut logs , we will do that with the group

black/white is 10” finished block

blue/white is 14” finished block

Also bring your machines and usual sewing

equipment and your lunch!

Helping Hands makes quilts for Crossroads Women’s Shelter, Cameron House , and others in need. The care that goes into these quilts, as well as their warmth and beauty, no doubt provide comfort to those who need them.

month.

Quilts for Cancer Peterborough County

We are a volunteer organization and registered Canadian Charity whose mission is to deliver quilts to cancer

patients in our community. The quilts are intended to provide comfort and warmth to those undergoing

cancer treatments and are provided at no cost to either the recipient or the person requesting the quilt.

The 2018 KQG Quilt Show, May 4, 5, 6, 2018 is for all members...so let’s all get involved in some way! The sign up sheets are on the wall at each meeting. Please check them out to see where you would like to help. Or contact Faith Van Dam, Quilt Show Chair, <[email protected]> or another committee member to offer your help.

If you need to know more about what is involved with a certain committee be sure to ask!

Silent Auction: Time for our creative guild members to start thinking about what they could offer

as items for the silent auction table at our Quilt Show 2018 in May. It gives us all an opportunity to consider a donation of items and services that could raise money for our Guild activities and perhaps clear out a few items from our stash of homeless projects and unused supplies. The Committee has asked that donations be related to sewing or crafting. Here are some ideas: table runners/centrepieces/placemats, lap quilts, purses/bags, wall hangings, aprons, bags, pillowcases, gift baskets, quilt/embroidery kits, like new patterns etc. For example, look through your stash for any fabric/fat quarters or unused sewing tools/supplies for items that “at the time” we thought we couldn’t live without. Might they be a lovely addition to a gift basket? I know that I have numerous “stocking stuffers” that Santa thought if they came from the sewing store I must need them! Not always! Finally, I would like to suggest to all those talented instructors, and quilting service providers in our guild to please offer their services as a gift certificate for purchase at the auction. There will be a table set up at regular meetings from now until the Show to accept with gratitude your donations. (The Silent Auction items will be collected at the table shared by the treasurer.)

To add some fun, for each item or services that you donate, you will receive a draw ticket for a day-long quilting project class, including lunch for you and three of your friends. Class will be taught by Helen Blaskievich, location and luncheon provided by Valerie Stankiewicz. Chair Valerie Stankiewicz Co: Barb Meade

Demos: Anyone interested in doing a demo at the quilt show can sign up at the next meeting or

contact Judi Van Zant ([email protected]).

Look for the sign up sheet and get your name on it to share some of your ideas and techniques!

Next quilt show committee meeting : Monday, March 26, 2018 at

9:30 in the Gathering Room at the Mount Community Centre.

Admissions There will be two entrances. Volunteers needed for two hour shifts. Schedule posted.

Door prizes : Vendors will be asked to donate prizes. If anyone else would like to donate prizes they would be appreciated. (sewing/craft related).

Antique Quilts: see Shirley Challice, or Ruth Hunter if you have a quilt that could be

displayed. Registration forms on KQG website. Quilts 50 years or older or a little less than 50 with a story.

Quilt Challenge: Tina Lubimiv, chair. Quilt Challenge: Crayon Colour Challenge involves the

random selection of three crayons, the colours of which should be predominate in the participants' creation. Although it may be difficult to find the exact colour of fabric to match the crayons, it should be as close as possible. Hint: Rub the crayon on a piece of paper and the colour is easier to see. Also to be included in the creation, is a supplied piece of material which should also be prom-inent in the work. The work should not be larger than 80" in perimeter. It is requested that the completed projects be brought to the May 2nd General Meeting for signing in. (rather than to The Mount)

Members’ Boutique: The Committee is looking for sewing related donations to sell to raise

money for the Guild. Or members can sell their own work with 10% of the sales going to the Guild. Volunteers will be needed to work at the tables. Chair : Heather Penwell

Tea Room: The tea room is being outsourced.

Wall Quilts/Art Quilts/Fabric Creations :

White Gloves: A schedule has been posted. Please sign up to volunteer. There should

Make your quilt rod / hanging sleeve from a patchwork of all the fabric used in your quilt. Then, if you need to repair anything on the quilt top later, you will have a selection of the right fabrics to use.
