Calibration

Calibration is not the same…

When calibrating a measuring instrument, it is compared to a measurement standard and the devia-tions from the reference values are documented, but not corrected. Users are constantly faced by the question of how often their instruments should be calibrated. This depends on the following factors:

• Measuring ranges

• Acceptable measuring tolerances

• Ambient conditions

• Amount of use

• Results of previous calibrations

• Air quality / contamination

• In-house procedures

The time interval between calibrations therefore depends to a large degree on the particularapplication.

ROTRONIC has been a manufacturer of humidity and temperature measuring instruments since 1967 and as such is seen as a pioneer in the field of humidity measuring technology. …as adjustment

During adjustment the measuring instrument is also compared to a measurement standard and the output signal shown. Deviations can be corrected by potentiometer or ROTRONIC software. All humidity measuring instruments produced by ROTRONIC are adjusted at two points before delivery. In the case of stricter application requirements the instruments undergo multipoint adjustment.

Calibration performed on-site – we come to you

Thanks to the new FG-431 dynamic humidity generator developed by ROTRONIC and installed in our mobile calibration lab, it is now possible for the first time to perform traceable humidity and temperature calibrations in the usual high ROTRONIC quality at your premises.

All we need is a 230 V power supply. The international calibration directives regard-ing volume flow and flow rate are fulfilled with unparalleled stability. A four-point calibration is completed in approximately 10 minutes. Apart from a perfectly calibrated humidity measuring instrument, you also receive a traceable certificate. It is also pos-sible for us to calibrate the instruments of other manufacturers with a maximum probe diameter of 25 mm with the dynamic calibrator.

Another unique feature is the calibration range of 0.1 to 99 %rh with a measurement uncertainty of 0.5 to 1.5 %rh depending on the humidity. Traceability is to National Standards in Switzerland (METAS - Federal Office of Metrology and Accreditation).

We can also perform on-site temperature calibrations with our mobile lab in the range -25 °C to +125 °C with a measurement uncertainty of 0.03 to 0.05 K depending on the stability of the applied condition and the resolution of the display.

Calibration

There is an increasing need for ISO-compliant calibration certificates for humidity measuring instruments.

The company ROTRONIC AG, using its experience in the field of humidity measurement, has developed a high precision humidity generator. This humidity generator formed the basis for our accreditation as a calibration centre for relative humidity and temperature, enabling us to certify humidity measuring instruments in compliance with ISO 9000.

Traceability

The high precision humidity generator formed the basis for accredita-tion of our company as calibration centre for relative humidity by the Swiss Federal Office of Metrology and Accreditation (METAS) under the registration number SCS 065. Humidity measuring instruments can be calibrated and certified as traceable to National Standards.

Flow mixing

The 901 calibrator is located in an air-conditioned room controlled at a temperature of 23 °C. In this calibrator a dry and a moist air stream are mixed to obtain the required relative humidity between 0.5 and 98 %rh. To achieve the required accuracy, the instruments are calibrated in a closed pressure chamber. The desired pressure, humidity and flow rate can be set. The humidity is measured with an MBW high-precision dew point chilled mirror hygrometer. The dew point temperature and the ambient temperature in the measuring chamber are needed to calculate the reference relative humidity. Both temperature signals are sent in digitised form to a PC, which then calculates the relative humidity. Measurement uncertainty is 0.2 to 0.6 %rh depending on the humidity value measured. In house software has been developed to extract the measured values and to automatically compile a calibration certificate which is ISO 9000 compliant.

Extension in the temperature range

Humidity over an extended temperature range

Since our customers are increasingly expressing the need to have their hygrometers calibrated at temperatures higher and lower than 23 °C, ROTRONIC has decided to extend its temperature range. A Thunder Scientific 2500 two-pressure generator is utilised and can be set in the temperature range between -10 °C to 70 °C. The humidity is measured via a heated line using an MBW dew point chilled mirror hygrometer. ROTRONIC is now accredited in the temperature range from -10 °C to +70 °C in the humidity range from 10 to 95 %rh. The measurement uncertainty is 0.2 to 2.1 %rh.

Temperature calibration

SCS and factory calibration for temperature calibration of combined humidity/temperature probes or temperature only probes is available over the range -25 °C to 125 °C with a measurement uncertainty of 0.03 to 0.05 K depending on the stability of the applied condition and the resolution of the display.

ROTRONIC certificates for humidity and temperature

ROTRONIC certificates are inexpensive, yet exact. They are prepared with the proven ROTRONIC SCS humidity standards under defined and controlled laboratory conditions.

Temperature calibration in a FluorinertTM bath

FluorinertTM is a liquid with a high boiling point that does not react with any material and is electrically isolating. ROTRONIC humidity probes can therefore be safely calibrated in terms of temperature directly in a fluorine inert bath wit a temperature range between -25 °C to 125 °C and an accuracy of 0.03 to 0.5 K.

SCS-zertifizierte Standards

ROTRONIC has been selling humidity standards based on ampoules of un-saturated salt solutions for many years. In order to be able to provide traceability of these humidity standards to National Standards, we have developed a calibration instrument in collaboration with the company MBW. In it the humid air obtained from one of the un-saturated salt ampoules is led in a circuit past an MBW chilled mirror and the dew point of the air is measured. Nine ampoules of every production batch are checked and a calibration certificate issued. The measurement uncertainty is 0.1 to 1.2 %rh depending on the value of the humidity standard.

The humidity standards from ROTRONIC come in boxes of five sealed ampoules of the same humidity value together with five textile pads. Every ampoule is marked with its humidity value and a serial number. An SCS certificate is enclosed in every box. Through the ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation) Mutual Recognition Arrangement the different accreditation bodies in each country which has signed the agreement recognises the equivalence of the accreditation reciprocally.

The ROTRONIC calibration devices are small, airtight containers that fit on to the respective probes exactly. The lower part consists of a screw-on cover into which the contents of an un-saturated salt ampoule is placed on a textile pad. After a stabilisation period of around 60 minutes the humidity in the calibration device has equili-brated and the reading from the instrument can be taken.

ROTRONIC portable humidity generator HygroGen 1

HygroGen 1 is a self-contained humidity generator for calibrating humidity and temperature measuring instruments. All it needs is a mains power connection and a supply of clean de-ionised water. HygroGen 1 uses a divided flow method to generate the humidity required by the user. A desiccant is used for low humidity and a saturator for high humidity. The temperature in the chamber is controlled with a Peltier element.
