What sets a Caliber apart from the fleet of her rivals? Is it her swiftness? Her seaworthiness and durability? Herexceptional stability and comfort? As Caliber owners

know, it is the artful combination of thesequalities, which enables a Caliber to performbeyond the limits that constrain so many others.

How swiftly a boat sails, how well shehandles, and how she weathers the sea are thedirect result of her design. At Caliber, efforts atthe drawing board have produced the idealunderbody configuration for Long RangeCruising, but not at the cost of maneuverabilityor speed.

A modified fin keel with skeg-hung rudder makesa Caliber exceptionally responsive and quick. And shehas outstanding directional stability, which enables herto keep a true course, even through pounding seas.Together, these characteristics add up to cruisingperformance unmatched by a racing fin or full-keeldesign.

How a Caliber feels is as important as howshe sails.

When rough water makes most sailors miserable, aCaliber owner can cruise in comfort and with

confidence. The Caliber moves more steadilyin heavy seas. And because of her high ballast-to-displacement ratio, the Caliber is verystable.

What's more, because much of theCaliber's weight is due to her superiorconstruction and not just added ballast, Caliberowners can be extra certain that their boat cantake what the sea dishes out. Other buildersmay extol their use of exotic new buildingmaterials to save weight. Caliber sticks withhefty, hand-crafted lamination. A time-tested

Page 4 of 32D E S I G NL NG RANGECRUISERS

Elsewhere on a Caliber, thoughtful featuresadd flexibility and control, which makes for extrasafety. For instance, the optional ConvertibleCutter Rig™ with a retractable inner forestay, instantly lets a Caliber change with the weather, from a swift sloop into an easily controlledcutter. It’s a real lifesaver when winds turnheavy.

Seaworthiness and good looks. Can a single boat have it all? The Caliber

does. From the substantial anchor roller platformto her stately quarter and stern, the Caliber’slines are fresh and graceful, without a hint oftrendiness. She’ll be every bit as attractive yearsfrom now, long after today’s flashier designshave been forgotten.

Special features enhance your safety.

Caliber hulls are built for outstandingresistance to collisions, with extra layers of solidfiberglass at potential impact points. In case ofdamage to the bow or rudder, a WatertightCollision Bulkhead and a Rudder Dam aredesigned to minimize flooding. The keel is notonly of a one piece integral construction, but it’salso double-sealed for an added layer againstgrounding damage.

construction method that provides layer uponlayer of strength against tough offshoreconditions. It’s the reason why a Caliber is, andfeels, so solid.

Combination of Best Underbody Design Characteristics

High performance fin keel is fast, but at theexpense of directional stability. Hull shapecreates a quick, uncomfortable motion offshorewith limited load carrying capacity.

Full keel does add control, but at a greatsacrifice in performance, windward pointingability, and maneuverability. Has high loadcarry capability.

The Caliber Performance Cruising UnderbodyTM is a combination of the two extremes, creatinga proven hull design with these characteristics; great performance, high pointing ability, excellentdirectional stability, easy tacking, high maneuverability, and load carrying capacity.

Optimum NACA Foil 12% Thickness Ratio for cruising yachts.High Lift for windward sailing and low drag for offwind sailing.Tacking angles of 85º - 90º possible.

Narrow NACA Foil on cruising yachts tend to stall out, forcingyacht to fall off to regain laminar flow. Speed towards destinationdrops substantially with tacking angles of 100º - 110º.

Keel Sections-- It’s all about lift and drag. Afine balance.

It’s important that the section shape of a keel is scaledusing a NACA (forerunner of the National Aeronautics andSpace Administration) series airfoil section. Yet, it still doesnot mean it will creating lift. Choosing the proper thicknessratio of a keel is just as important.

Maintaining thickness of the keel as a percentage of its

length is important as the proper ratio will allow thekeel to develop lift with minimum drag. Testing hasshown that 12% to 13% is an optimum number formoderate displacement cruising hulls.

Ratios less than 12% results in a keel that willtend to stall when going to windward. Hence tackingangles are forced into the 100º - 110º range to pre-vent stalling. A fine balance was achieved in design-ing the Caliber keel section.

Converts in Minutes...

Sloop or a cutter--Depending upon the weather, you now have a choice.

While cruising, you canexpect the weather to be unexpected. With the optionalCaliber Convertible Cutter Rig™, you can be prepared.

This rig allows you to sail with the efficiency of a sloop rigwhen going to weather in light to medium winds. Tacking is abreeze as there is no intermediate headstay to interfere. Yet, whenthe air turns heavy and the seas choppy, within moments, you can

turn to the versatility of a cutter rig. Arig that allows you tobalance the sail plan against any wind and seas conditionsyou encounter.

What's more, when the weather turns really nasty, youhave the option of sailing with a fully self-tacking, allinboard rig that is very strong. Strong because all the sailloads add to the support column of the mast.

Furthermore, since it’s an all inboard rig and high offthe deck, eliminating the need for any foredeck work out ona pitching bow. Since it is so high, breaking waves are ableto wash freely under the sails.

A s I was on theconcluding legs ofmy around-the-world voyage, I knew I was aboutto embark on themost dangeroussection of it. After

spending some peaceful time in the beautiful calmwaters surrounding Bali, my next major crossing wasthe Southern Indian Ocean. The biggest waves on theplanet occur where the winds blow consistentlystrong and in the same direction. This is such a place. So it was with some hesitancy my mate and I left forthis part of the journey.

Since the winds were quite strong, I opted to gowith my heavy air rig. It’s a heavily reefed main withstaysail. I chose this rig because it had presented sucha balanced and sturdy option when I faced previouspassages of this nature. Yet, this was the first timewhere I really would understand exactly howbeneficial it is.

After being awake most of the night, due to theheavy freighter traffic in the sea lanes we weresailing, it cleared up and we decided to call it a night. This, in spite of the heavy seas and strong winds. Ihad confidence in my Caliber as I was approachingthe fifth year of my world voyage, and my belovedBlue Alligator had always served me well. So at0400, we went below to take a well deserved rest, quickly falling sound asleep. That's when ithappened...

I was abruptly awakened by the roar of whatsounded like an oncoming freight train. Before I had

time to react, my world was literally turned on its side. What used to be the cabin sole, was suddenly the verticalcabin side! I could hear the gigantic rush of watercompletely engulfing, knocking on beams end, andwashing over Blue Alligator. In those seconds, I realizedwe were struck by a freak ocean wave. After rushing past,Blue Alligator immediately resumed her normal uprightposition.

In hearing, feeling, and knowing the full fury of thatrogue wave, I quickly scrambled out of my berth. Withheart racing I rushed topsides expecting the worst. Ienvisioned finding the deck washed clear of my mast, rigging, and sails.

I was shocked to see Blue Alligator happily sailingalong with absolutely no sign of what had just transpired. It was then I understood, even more, the value of myheavy weather rig.

My rig presented a perfectlybalanced sail plan that kept BlueAlligator from rolling off course wherethe wave could have done moredamage. Plus, it’s all inboard and highoff the deck. The force of that giantwave simply washed entirely OVER

Blue Alligator's deck and UNDER thesails!

Furthermore, the strength of this rig was clear. Withall the load points supporting the mast, it easily withstoodthe violent action caused bythis breaking wave.

In recounting this story afew months later, I realized thesignificance of what I didnext-- I went below, batteneddown the companionway, andwent back to sleep. Whatbetter vote of confidence couldthere be.

“I was abruptly awakened by what soundedlike an oncoming freight train. The nextmoment my world was literally turnedcompletely on its side.”

Full Length Skeg for more powerfulcontrol and strength.

The Rudder/Skeg Combination is animportant element of the Caliber steering system. Afull length structural skeg, located directly in front ofthe rudder, has many advantages.

For one, the stall angle of the Rudder issubstantially raised. Especially during times when itis needed most- in heavy seas, or tight dockingsituations. A more powerful turning moment can be

generated because a skeg will increase the stall angle ofthe rudder substantially which results in higher turningmoments.

The skeg also gives additional protection to therudder. Adding a third, structural bearing at the lowerend, which also helps reduce vibration.

A skeg allows the water to sweep past across therudder in a more gentle fashion. This not only increasesthe stall angle, but also helps reduce that annoyingrudder flutter feedback that transfer to the helmsman.

Withstanding the Test of Time -- Heavy SolidFiberglass Hull Construction.

At Caliber, we believe serious offshore sailingpassages should not be the proving ground for the latesthigh-tech fabrics, sandwich core, or exotic resins. Westick to a construction method as old as the creation offiberglass with its proven track record. The firstfiberglass boats built many decades ago, are activelysailing today. Constant reminders that solidfiberglass hulls, built withheavy woven rovingfabrics, have stood the test oftime.

Other builders may extol the use ofthe latest materials to build a hull that islighter but just as strong. Saving not onlyweight, but labor and material cost too. But atCaliber, we stick with the heavy, strong, laborintensive, solid construction method that seriousoffshore sailing demands.

A heavy woven roving glass laminate createsa thick panel which increases strength. Just bangthe hull of a LRC SEries yacht, and compare itto others. Common sense will tell you what youwant to be at sea on.

Why Calibers don't suffer from stress.Don't look for a pre-fab fiberglass liner inside a

Caliber. Instead, look at how we've integrateddozens of interior members into the hull to take onthe stresses of wind and water.

The interior of a Caliber is hand-crafted forstrength, not mass produced from glass liners andglass components. All our bulkheads areindividually taped in place top to bottom, bow tostern, throughout the entirehull. In addition, from the floorstringers and the subsole, toberth tops and shelves, everything is solidly hand-laminated to the hull. Suchthorough lamination is virtuallyimpossible when installinglarge fiberglass liners orfiberglass components.

Our Multi-Bulkhead Bonding System™ is apainstaking construction method but it adds greatlyto a Caliber’s durability and seaworthiness. ACaliber is able to carry the load of stores foroffshore voyaging, and the loads of the sea.

pounding surf during the peak of the storm. I knewCaliber built a strong boat. Now I was forced to putit to the test.

So early Tuesday morning, I parked Mirador ona steep sandy beach covered with fist sized rocks. She came to rest with her port toe rail a foot abovethe beach with her mast towards shore. Breakingwaves came over the starboard side filling thecockpit with sand. Those waves battered Miradornonstop for the next 7 hours. Finally... high tidearrived just as the wind shifted to offshore.

I immediately set the genoa and after 30minutes of Mirador being lifted and violentlydeposited directly and squarely on her rudder andskeg, she was free. Upon anchoring Mirador Iinspected the bilges, engine room, and rudder shaft.

Miraculously, I found the bilge bone dry as ifthe previous 14 hours was only a nightmare. Thewheel and rudder turned freely and smoothly. Nota spot of damage was to be found anywhere inside.Ultimately the major damage, after what couldhave been catastrophic, was cosmetic and repairedshortly after. I will be aforever grateful for thestrength of Caliber'samazing hull and ruddersystem.

“As Mirador was being pounded, myconfidence was put to the ultimate test.”

Hurricane Marty, sweeping through the Sea of Cortezlast September, was the greatest disaster to hit the localcommunity and was a potential disaster for my Caliber 40Mirador. Ultimately, Mirador proved to me how myconfidence in her construction was justified.

In Marty's path, destruction ensued. Many yachtssuffered major damage. At one marina, there were 13sinkings, 4 dismastings, 14 yachts grounded and severelydamaged, 3 broke free and swept out to sea. At a nearbyanchorage, 10 boats sank, 6 went aground, and 3 moredisappeared out to sea. It was a brutal storm.

At the height of the storm my anchor line parted.Moments later I was under full power battling the terrificwinds. Ten foot breaking seas prevented me from leavingmy anchorage surrounded by rocks and reefs. After anhour, I was shivering with cold, feeling seasick for the firsttime in 20 years of sailing, barely able to maintain control

How our Chainplate System shares aheavy load.

When a boat is under sail, her stays andshrouds are under tremendous tension. On manyboats, the load on these mast supports is carriedby chainplates attached directly to the hull. Butthere's much more to the chainplate system on aCaliber.

We anchor each chainplate with stainless hexbolts to a massive thick bulkhead, which is thor-oughly bonded to the hull over its entire height. We go to all this trouble so that the load on thechainplates is dispersed throughout the hull, notconcentrated in small spots. And our Double-Lock Chainplate System™ strengthens the deckto the hull connection, preventing potential chain-plate leaks.

We then set our chainplates inboard on thedeck, to allow tighter sheeting of the genoa whenclose-hauled to windward for better performance, plus easier passage fore and aft on the deck.

Our Integral Keel, Tanks, and Sub-sole enhances structural integrity.

The internal keel, tanks, and sub-sole on aCaliber are actually integrated as part of thehull. The keel is not just bolted on, the tanksare not just dropped in place, and the sub-soledoesn’t just support furniture, . Each object isheavily bonded into place and tied together. We call this method our Integral Strength-GridSystem™. A system where keel and primarysea loads are spread evenly over large hull sur-face areas. Compared to the other boats, ourintegrated structure offers many significantadvantages:

The Caliber LRC SEries Delivers-- Yes, youcan take it with you.

Whether your voyages last a week or months at atime, storage space on a boat is at a premium. So atCaliber, we put a lot of thought into equipping our LRCSEries yachts with extraordinary storage capabilities.

Our integral tanks built under the sub-sole and intothe ends of the hull, frees up a huge amount of volumewhere it’s converted into usable accessible storage.

In addition, because all Caliber’s are designed with aserious-size dedicated engine rooms, all majormechanical and electrical equipment is installed here.

Again, freeing up space in the livable cabin areas forstorage.

Of course, there are numerous lockers, drawers, and shelves throughout the interior. But wherespace is squandered on other boats-- under counters, above counters, under settees, behind settees, andunder berths-- it is all designed to be useable storageon a Caliber.

Furthermore, with the moderate displacementCaliber Performance Cruising UnderbodyTM, theextra stores won’t bog down performance. The hullis designed for load carrying capability. Designed toperform when fully loaded for an extended offshorevoyage.

Caliber knows that serious sailors demand seriousstorage capacity. Every available cubic inch is

turned into useable storage as this example of theport settee area shows.

LONG RANGESYSTEMS-- EXTRAFEATURES FOREXTRA PEACE OFMIND.

Cruising the open sea is one of life’s greatadventures. But as experienced blue-water sailorsknow, the fun can easily be dampened by nastysurprises. Such as violent weather. Uncooperativewinds. Weak battery power. Questionable watersupplies and fuel rip-offs at out of the way places.Fortunately, for the owner of a Caliber LRC SEriesyacht, such difficulties aren’t so disheartening. That’sbecause we’ve designed our systems for long rangecapacity and dependability. Giving you more freedom, confidence, and control at sea.

Fuel and Water--More capacity means lessworry.

The 35LRC SEries yacht hauls an amazing 105gallons of water and 120 gallons of fuel. With

capacities like these, a Caliber owner won’tconstantly have to top up at foreign ports, where thefuel and water prices may be high, and qualitysuspect.

Since the fuel tanks hold 120 gallons, this extendsher motoring range many hundreds of miles beyondother boats in her class. When becalmed, or when astorm is threatening, this 35LRC SEries yacht canmotor vast distances to reach more favorableconditions for sailing.

As further assurance against trouble, the LRCSEries is equipped with dual tanks and dual filters

Need extra power and extrareliability? The answer--CaliberSmart Electrical System™

Today’s sailor-- who can have a plethoraof navigational electronics and convenienceappliances-- Needs a lot of power.

Addressing this issue is the Caliber Smart ElectricalSystemTM. A valuable feature on a yacht that dependsupon reliable electrical power as increased performancein a marine electrical system is not as simple as addingadditional batteries. For heavy duty marine purposes, thesolution starts with a power system that employs thelatest in marine electronics technology.

Deep cycle marine batteries require specializedmonitors and charging equipment to be able to supplytheir potential power reliably and safely.

A first step is the removal of the standard typeautomobile alternator that generally comes with marineengines. It’s replaced with a high-output, small framealternator capable of producing 110 amps of chargingpower. To take advantage of this increased alternatorpower, two very large, high acceptance deep-cycle 200amp AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) marine batteries are

now a standard in the Caliber Smart Electrical SystemTM

for the 40LRC SEries model. These batteries are carefullylocated for great accessibility. Even more convenient, adding an extra optional battery is possible.

To make the high output alternator work efficientlyand safely, there is a specialized “smart regulator” in thesystem. This regulator can be considered as the communi-cator between the batteries and the alternator. It controls

(A) High power output large frame alternator inaddition to the standard (B) high output smallframe alternator.

All digital electrical panel with extra space for additionalelectronics. A standard part of the Caliber SmartElectrical SystemTM.

the charging power to the batteries in a sophisticatedstep sequence regulated not only by the voltage, buttemperature too. These criteria are monitored for theoptimal charging sequence. Should there be a mal-function in the system, it would be indicated by anerror lamp and associated audio buzzer.

Battery charging while the engine is running isfully automatic and therefore does not require anymanual intervention by the owner. If one should wantto know the status of the charging regime at any time,a status lamp is incorporated in the smart regulator.

As an additional safety feature, the starting batteryis isolated from the house batteries so no switchinghas to be remembered when starting the engine tocharge all batteries. And, it’s not possible to acciden-tally drain the starting battery while using appliances.Even in the unlikely event that the starter batteryfails, there is an emergency parallel switch whichmakes it simple to transfer power from the house bat-teries to start the engine.

Furthermore, the electrical circuits are protectedwith a circuit protection device (CPD). Every circuithas to go through a main CPD. To help insure theprotection of additional future equipment, there areadditional positive and negative distribution postscreating convenient attachment points for optionalelectronics. For further safety, a main 450 amp manu-al switch is installed to shut down the entire DChouse battery system quickly.

All these features, which make the electrical sys-tem safe and reliable, are incorporated as standardequipment with the Caliber Smart Electrical SystemTM

package.

Dedicated Engine Room-- Heart of aSErious Cruising Yacht.

The engine room, so often neglected in othercruising yachts, is considered the heart of a LRCSEries yacht. It is given the attention it deserves. It’s designed with the utmost planning andattention to detail.

Where other yachts place major systemcomponents under sinks, buried in lockers, andunder berths, taking up valuable storage space in

the living cabin areas, the LRC SEries yacht majorsystem components are primarily located in thededicated engine room. This leaves extra room inthe rest of the yacht interior for useful storage.

Within the engine room, there is space for an airconditioner, water maker, inverter, heater, etc. Thereis good access to all this equipment-- Including thediesel engine. The marine batteries, fresh watermanifolds, Fuel Control Panel, steering systemcomponents, etc., all within easy reach. There iseven room for a generator.
