Industry Meeting Minutes 08/09/2018

The meeting started after the ADM-255 class presentations for the LMR.

History of Additive Manufacturing:

• Ms. Bullock started with a brief history of Additive Manufacturing (AM) at Calhoun. • First printer in 2017. • Attempted at a metal printer in 2014 • 2015-2016 established AM program along with a degree. First college in the state of

Alabama to achieve this. • 2016 –Approached by Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and opened line of

communication for working to train North Alabama in Metal AM. Omar Mireles proposed funding from MSFC to training and develop curriculum for Calhoun and UAH in Metal AM.

• 2017 – Moved the AM to new location adding over 3000 square feet to AM and the Design drafting program.

• 2017 Omar Mireles of MSFC worked on possibility of transferring metal printers from Grissom HS or Jemison HS to Calhoun and UAH.

• 2018 Selected by GE to be the first community college to receive a Concept Laser MLab 200R 3D metal printer.

Curriculum Review and recommendation: (program cards provided)

• See attached card and description

Recommendations for curriculum:

Wayne McCain from Athens State asked if we were using Microsoft Project. Ms. Bullock confirmed we were using it in our design classes.

It was recommended to have a project management class or degree. The degree would include a broad spectrum of classes to include project management, accounting, technical writing and designs

Jack Stokes, USSRC, stated that we need to require students to take a technical writing course. He stated that he used to manage co-op students and that was on area they were lacking in.

More discussion to add additional theory in the design classes to add designing for AM or an AM design class.

It was recommended to increase the number of seat of Materialise Magic from 10 to 20 and to add the Materialise structure module for generative design and lattice structures for the ADM 161 class.

James Pugh, Pugh Engineering recommended for Calhoun to develop an short certificate for MEP to have more civil and structural classes.

Larry Miller indicated that one was being taught at his facilities.

Discussion turned to needs of the Limestone Correctional Facility which included:

Working computers, possible internet

Question was asked if people with records were able to gain employment upon release.

Larry responded that several had.

Marketing Program:

The talk switched to architecture. Ms. Bullock made a statement about the declining enrollment of students in those courses. She ask the group for input on how to get more students. She shared the need to meet industry demand for these students. (Last year over 30 job were turn away due to lack of students for perspective employers)

She asked if pay was a factor and it was discuss to research pay and see if it had an impact on students pursuing this field.

Since the need is in high demand for design students board made suggestion of more exposure. USSRC recommended to make sure a plaque was created for the LRV to gain recognization for Calhoun Students

Equipment recommended for advancement the program:

After talk about the LMR and how much easier it would be on our team to have a scanned model of the frame, it was stated that we should have a hand held scanner by Jack Stokes and Joe Vallely, USSRC. Joe stated that the USSRC would get volunteers to “pound doors” to get funding for CCC to get a scanner.

Pete Markopoulos, ASRC, stated he knew a person from ARMODEC who works in the scanning department. Maybe we could get a used scanner from them.

Talk turned to the two metal printers in the two high schools in Huntsville and how they had not been used for over two years. It had been recommended MSFC that the two printers purchased by state funds placed in the high schools be relocated, one to Calhoun and one to UAH. This would allow both AM systems to be brought back to working order. In doing this we would achieve ensuring safety of all students and allow better access that would be available to all schools due to a better well trained staff.

It was then mention that due to Auburn trying to help bring the printers back on line and up to date that HCS decided to keep the printers and not transfer them.

Bullock told the board about the proposal for a GE concept laser that she and Watson had work. that Calhoun had been selected as the first community college worldwide to receive the award of receiving a 3D metal printer through GE educational program four other colleges were selected worldwide this year • Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Germany

• University of Limerick, Republic of Ireland • Calhoun Community College, Alabama, USA

• University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA • West Virginia University, USA

Pete Markopoulos, ASRC, stated that even though they had the same metal printer, Concept Laser MLabs 200r, at their location, he was not allowed to use it because he was not trained by a Concept Laser trainer. It was stated that they were told it would void the warranty if untrained personal used the printer. His suggestion was for us to verify that the CCC instructors could teach the students how to operate the system and not void the warranty. It was suggested to see if we could train to obtain a train the trainer certification.

It was recommended to add all equipment for the new metal printer.

• Wet/dry separator • Safety PPE • ES flooring • Peening • Down draft table

Meeting was adjourned
