SBA BOARD

Cait!in E. Ro"nettSincerely,

Have a great week, Santa Clara.

From The Editor: I’m sorry for the long quote, but I really like it. It seems to me at some point in the past, the great men (and women) of this world knew a little bit about every-thing. Without debate prep, memos, and the internet, all of the Greats were philosophers. People spent time and energy thinking about things like the importance of relationships be-tween friends and family members, the cultivation of virtues, and articulation of truth. We not only don’t have time for this anymore, but most of us are on information overload. Be-tween the 24 hour news cycle and twitter (I still don’t really have any idea what “twitter” is) we are so busy participating in the media and advertising frenzy, I wonder if we are taking time to think about the implications of what we’re learning. Or, I could be trying desperately to justify my Sunday night ramblings. There are a lot of juicy bits in my quote for the week and I could write for days about forgiveness and respect, but today I’ve been thinking a lot about pride. I don’t think there are enough words for “pride” in the English language. Pride can have a negative connotation, especially when it’s in terms of how we feel about ourselves. When someone is described as proud, instead of prideful, they sound strong and in control. I am proud on many different levels, for many differ-ent people. I feel proud when anyone from Santa Clara does something noteworthy, even though I have nothing to do with it. I’m proud of my niece for just existing. I even feel an un-derscore of pride for my good friends when someone else lets me down. It’s strange, really. I think pride is a really easy emotion to feel for other people. It’s easy in our environment, around so many brilliant people, to forget to feel proud of ourselves. But working hard in law school, especially in today’s economic climate, is wor-thy of making each one of our mothers proud.
