Highlights include architectural tours, talks, parties in significant buildings rarely open to the public

PALM SPRINGS, CA (October 23, 2017) – Modernism Week’s signature February festival will take place February 15-25, 2018, highlighting midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California. For the thirteenth year, the annual 11-day festival will feature a wide array of events including the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale, tours of iconic homes in more than 23 neighborhoods (including the Signature Home Tour on both weekends), architectural walking, biking and double-decker bus tours, tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, the Modernism Week Show House: Christopher Kennedy Compound, classic cars, garden tours, a vintage travel trailer exhibition, nightly parties and a special series of talks about Frank Lloyd Wright, Preservation, and Legendary Women of Design. All events are open to the public and tickets go on sale November 1, 2017 at 12 p.m. PST at modernismweek.com. Attendees will be able to preview the events on the website without making purchases starting October 25. A portion of ticket proceeds benefit Modernism Week (a non-profit organization) and other local preservation, neighborhood and community groups. As additional events are finalized they will be added for sale on the website on the first of each month. “Modernism Week continues to expand the scope and reach of our events and programming,” said William Kopelk, Modernism Week Board Chairman. “This year, we will continue that trend by offering new events and educational opportunities while still featuring the beloved favorites that our audience anticipates. We will offer a compelling combination of educational talks and film screenings, exciting tours, and activities throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond. Our returning Modernism Week attendees will be thrilled with the selection of appealing new programs.” Signature Events One of the highlights of the first weekend includes the annual Modernism Week Opening Night Party on Thursday, February 15, presented by Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery. This chic red carpet affair will be teeming with vintage style and authentic swagger as attendees channel their inner Marilyn, Sammy or Hefner, for a night of entertainment, high style and glamour. The popular event will take place at the 1962 Indian Canyons Golf Resort, designed by Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison. The Canyon Country Club, as it was originally known, has a legendary history as a favorite spot of Hollywood icons including Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Walt Disney and Dean Martin. For the Opening Party, the club will recall the famous “After Dark” television

series and be transformed into a swinging club reminiscent of fabulous cocktail parties from the 1960s. This spectacular evening will be over the top with expansive indoor and outdoor lounges, abundant and decadent hors d’oeuvres provided by Lulu California Bistro, and an open bar that offers specialty Rat Pack-era cocktails featuring Hendrick’s Gin. Attendees will dance the night away to the tunes of retro performer DJ Baz and a swinging show by The Dreamboats, an upbeat retro Rock & Roll group, back by popular demand, courtesy of Corian Design. The Modernism Week Show House: The Christopher Kennedy Compound returns this year, presented by Traditional Home and California Home + Design magazines. For the fifth year, Kennedy will bring together prominent tastemakers to create uniquely designed rooms in this decorator showcase, this year located in the historic and toney Deepwell neighborhood. The home, a classic midcentury modern residence, will receive a top-to-bottom transformation by Kennedy’s team of professionals. Daily tours and many other exciting evening events will be offered throughout the week at this Show House. New Events Fans of midcentury-era Hollywood films will enjoy Hollywood Revisited, a stunning musical revue that showcases a dazzling lineup of costumes worn by the stars in original Hollywood films. Set to the music that defined the times and presented by top notch Broadway and Hollywood performers, Hollywood Revisited lets the audience experience historic costume designs of Hollywood's Golden Age. Participants of the Modernism Week Signature Home Tour will be able to either drive themselves on the tour route or upgrade to a new VIP chauffeur experience in which up to three participants will be able to ride in a style in Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUVs and finish the tour with an exclusive private reception.

Preservation of historic buildings has always been one of the fundamental pillars for Modernism Week. Preservation will be celebrated this year with tours of the Walter S. White-designed “Wave” house in Palm Desert, which will feature a compelling presentation about the house and its significance, followed by a tour of the structure. Midcentury modern places of worship will be highlighted in two new tours this year. The first tour, “Sacred Places - Modern Church Tour,” will feature more than seven houses of worship and emphasize how the architecture of the structure was designed to augment the purpose of the building. Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs will also be featured in a separate tour entitled “Architecture in Service of the Sacred and Spiritual” that contrasts the historic E. Stewart Williams structure with the 1980’s west-facing addition designed by David Christian.

For the last few years, Modernism Week has offered attendees the opportunity to join home tours and architectural excursions outside of the immediate Palm Springs area. This successful expansion continues in 2018 with home tours planned in surrounding desert cities including Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells.

Donald Wexler’s classic 1964 Dinah Shore estate will be open to the public for a special Modernism Week event called A Night at the Dinah Shore Estate on Saturday, February 17. The party, a fundraiser for Save Iconic Architecture, will feature cocktails and the ability to explore this architectural gem. Save Iconic Architecture works to prevent the demise of unique and relevant properties in southern California.

The 2018 Modernism Week schedule features the exciting Ridge Mountain Residence: Exclusive Premier Tour and Reception on February 19. Event attendees will be the first to experience the first completed residential commission in Palm Springs by the renowned firm Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects. Nestled into a rocky mountainside and designed to have minimal impact on its remote environment, the Ridge Mountain Residence is envisioned as a sculptural piece that emerges from and carefully harmonizes with its site. The house dissolves barriers between indoors and out, framing dramatic vistas of the valleys and surrounding desert wilderness. At the reception, attendees will be able to interact with the firm’s Founding Partner and Design Principal, Steven Ehrlich, FAIA.

Educational Programming and Film Screenings Educational outreach is a core element of Modernism Week programming, and this year that trend continues with a special series of presentations about Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most notable American architects of the 20th century. Produced by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the series will be conducted by luminaries on the subject, including Alan Hess, who discuss Wright’s influence in Southern California and Marsh Davis, who will give a detailed presentation about one of the best maintained Wight-designed Usonian homes now overseen by Indiana Landmarks. Other educational speaking tracks include a keynote presentation by noted designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Speaking at Modernism Week for the first time, Bullard will share what it is like to design homes for his celebrity clientele including the Kardashians, Cher and Tommy Hilfiger. Attendees will learn more about how Bullard is inspired by Palm Springs and how he went about the renovation of Villa Grigio, his 1963 Movie Colony hideaway by architect James McNaughton. Immediately following the Keynote Presentation, Bullard will join a panel discussion with photographer and author Tim Street-Porter and additional designers whose work is highlighted in the book “Palm Springs: A Modernist Paradise.” Trina Turk, fashion designer whose own home is featured in the book, will also participate in the event. Modernism Week will also feature a special panel presentation called Legendary Women of Design (profiling three legendary female designers who were pioneers in a male-dominated field), three presentations about architect Paul Revere Williams, and several presentations about design (including a groundbreaking examination of design dialogues between California and Mexico, followed by a tour, a presentation and moderated conversation entitled “From Googie to Gehry,” and a fascinating exploration of the midcentury look and design of the spaces depicted in the film “The Incredibles 2”). Landscape and Outdoor Living topics will be highlighted this year with several significant

presentations by luminaries including Kelly Comras, who will discuss Ruth Shellhorn and her landscape design work at the original Disneyland and Bullocks Wilshire stores throughout California. Michelle Delk, Partner and Landscape Architect at Snøhetta, one of the hottest, most in-demand architectural firms in the world, will offer an insightful overview of her firm’s work on the Willamette Falls Riverwalk project, in Oregon City, Oregon which will convert a massive defunct 22-acre paper mill complex into a public-oriented park, riverwalk, visitors center and performance space. Mark Rios, of Rios Clemente Hale Studio, will discuss their firm’s work on the new Palm Springs Downtown Park. Once again, Modernism Week will present a variety of film screenings, including the World Premiere of “Frank Sinatra in Palm Springs - A Place He Called Home” with a post-screening reception at the Ingleside Inn, and a World Premiere of a new film about Albert Frey by beloved architectural film maker Jake Gorst and Design on Screen. In addition, Modernism Week has newly partnered with the American Documentary Film Festival to create a new Architecture Film Series that will feature approximately 25 films about architecture and design in 12-15 screenings. Returning Favorites Modernism Week aficionados will be pleased to see that the core favorite events will return this year, and many will feature new enhancements. The popular Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours will feature new additions to the tour with updated commentary, and provides participants with a 2.5 hour overview of significant civic and commercial buildings, as well as residential properties located within notable Palm Springs neighborhoods, including the midcentury “leisure lifestyle” communities in South Palm Springs. Led by knowledgeable guides, this open-air experience offers unique, exterior perspectives of Palm Springs. Illuminated Modern, and its sunset architectural bus tour, also return this year with an updated route and new additions to the schedule. This unique tour showcases important midcentury modern buildings in Palm Springs, which are illuminated with colorful lighting. Projected on many buildings are the architect’s name and year of completion. The historic Town & Country Center will be one of the many architecturally significant buildings to be profiled this year. One of Modernism Week’s most highly anticipated events, the 18th annual Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale at the Palm Springs Convention Center (February 16-19) will feature 85 premier national and international dealers offering furniture, decorative and fine arts representing design movements of the 20th century. Produced by Dolphin Promotions, whose shows are among the leading venues for antiques and collectibles in North America, the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale will open with an Early Buying Preview Party on February 16 to benefit Modernism Week. Included with admission to the Modernism Show & Sale is weekend admission to the Palm Springs Modern Design Expo, a new event showcasing cutting-edge modern design and technology to be

Modernism Week Appoints New Chairman and Hires New Chief Executive Officer

Charitable Organization Strengthens Leadership to Continue its Mission PALM SPRINGS, CA (June 8, 2017) – Modernism Week officials have announced that its Board of Directors has recently voted to appoint William Kopelk as the new Chairman of the Board and to engage J. Chris Mobley, former Chairman, as Chief Executive Officer, a newly created position. Both appointments take effect on June 15. Lisa Vossler Smith continues as the organization’s Executive Director. Celebrating midcentury modern design, architecture, art, and culture in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, the 11-day Modernism Week festival has experienced exceptional growth, and in the course of the past twelve years has become one of the leading festivals of its kind in the world. This past February, an estimated 97,000 attendees enjoyed nearly 300 events and generated an economic impact of approximately $35.5 million for area hotels, shops, restaurants, and other local businesses from Palm Springs to Indian Wells and beyond. In addition, $1.3 million of the proceeds generated by ticket sales from this year’s event went directly back to community neighborhoods and partner organizations, a new record for Modernism Week. William Kopelk was appointed the new Chairman of Modernism Week’s board of directors, taking over from Mobley. Kopelk has a long history with the organization. He served as Chairman and co-founder in 2005 and has been an active member of the volunteer board since then. “We are thrilled that William will become the new Modernism Week board chairman,” said J. Chris Mobley. “The entire board has been impressed by William’s hard work and commitment to the goals and mission of Modernism Week, especially his focus on preservation matters. He will provide excellent leadership as the organization continues to evolve and improve while staying true to its mission.” Kopelk, a native born Californian, has been a desert resident since 1997 when he founded InsideOutside, the firm responsible for many notable landscape projects such as the Ace and Saguaro Hotels, Donald Wexler’s Steel House and Verbena Residence, and the then newly restored Kaufmann House. A firm believer in preservation, Kopelk received his degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon. In addition to co-founding Modernism Week, he served as President of the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation for eight years, was on the city of Palm Springs’ Architectural and Design Review Commission, and most recently, worked on the outreach portion of the Modernism Committee for the Sacramento based State Historic Resources Commission. “Modernism Week continues to grow to meet the demand for programing and events, and this new staffing addition supports the amount of work the organization requires,” said incoming board Chairman Kopelk. “As Chairman, Chris had already been working on many aspects of the festival, so it made sense for us to create a Chief Executive Officer position so he could more fully devote his expertise and organizational talents to Modernism Week.”

After spending 18 years working in the areas of Management Information Systems, Business Development Strategies, Urban Planning, Property Development and Affordable Housing, Mobley moved to Palm Springs in 2010 and opened Just Modern Inc. He also joined the Modernism Week Board in 2012 and was elected Chairman in 2013.

Mobley, while serving as Chairman, has been instrumental in the creation of Modernism Week’s headquarters for tours and events called CAMP (Community and Meeting Place) for each of the last three years, and has overseen significant improvements to and the ongoing operation of Modernism Week’s web site and ticketing systems. Under his leadership, Modernism Week garnered an unprecedented amount of media attention with more than 2.75 billion impressions worldwide in 2017. In his new role, he will continue this work and strategize for the continued enhancement of the Modernism Week attendee experience, guiding the organization as it matures. The phenomenal success of Modernism Week and its role in helping to highlight Palm Springs and the greater Coachella Valley around the world has been accomplished by an extremely small paid staff and an extraordinarily committed Board of Directors. Now, by creating the CEO position, the leadership of Modernism Week is investing in its future stability and strengthening its management structure. Modernism Week celebrates and fosters appreciation of midcentury architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation, and sustainable modern living as represented in Palm Springs and the surrounding Coachella Valley. Highlighting this dedication to education, this year more than thirty lectures and films spotlighting famed architects, landscape designers, historians, design experts and authors were presented to attendees. Additional Modernism Week educational programs included several West Coast film premiers, and panels about architectural preservation and renovation. Later this year, Modernism Week will offer its annual Fall Preview from October 19-22, 2017 (tickets on sale August 1 at 12 p.m. PST) and will stage the 2018 Modernism Week festival from February 15-25, 2018 (tickets on sale November 1 at 12 p.m. PST). Modernism Week Helps Local Community Organizations Raise Funds

Old Las Palmas Neighborhood Tour Sets Great Example of Charitable Fundraising PALM SPRINGS, CA (May 31, 2017) – Modernism Week announced that its 11-day festival in February, 2017 helped many area organizations and neighborhood groups to raise significant funds that these organizations contributed back to local Coachella Valley charities or used for civic improvements. The funds were raised from ticket sales for official Modernism Week events, including neighborhood tours, parties, educational talks, and other events. A new official Modernism Week partner event offered this year was the Old Las Palmas Home and Garden Tour, which enabled participants to “Peek Behind The Hedges” of this exclusive and historic Palm Springs community. The tour featured the interiors of seven residences (including the former homes of Mary Martin, Mary Pickford, Liberace, and Howard Hughes) and the beautiful private gardens of another. It raised more than $30,000 and the Old Las Palmas Neighborhood Organization recently announced that all of the money raised from the tour will be given to area organizations that directly impact the lives of more than 4,000 Coachella Valley children. These organizations receiving donations from the tour proceeds include the Foundation for the Palm Springs Unified School District (funds will be used to send up to 75 students to camp for a week), Palm Springs Art Museum (funds will be used to transport school children to the museum for docent led museum tours and events), Palm Springs International Film Festival (funds will be used to transport school children to the Student Screening Day), Shoes That Fit (funds will buy 100 pairs of shoes for school children in need) and the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition (funds will support bus costs for bringing children to piano assemblies and underwrite teacher study guides). “With this tour the neighborhood showcased some of the amazing and historic homes in Old Las Palmas to raise funds for charities. It was a true neighborhood effort,” said Old Las Palmas Neighborhood Organization chair John Williams. “All the funds we raised – every single penny – will go to charities that focus on the needs of children in the Coachella Valley.” “Our school principals often receive requests from the families of students about possible scholarships for summer camp,” said Ellen Goodman, Executive Director of The Foundation for the Palm Springs Unified School District. “As a result of this scholarship from the Old Las Palmas Neighborhood Organization we're now able to send up to 75 children to summer camp who might not otherwise been able to afford to attend. We are

very grateful that this neighborhood organization chose to support our students in this very generous manner." Modernism Week works closely with local neighborhood organizations like Old Las Palmas to showcase iconic Palm Springs residences and other architecturally significant buildings during tours in many of the city’s 43 official neighborhoods. These tours raise significant funds for participating neighborhood organizations. Some neighborhoods donate funds to local charities and some fund various community improvement projects, such as restoration, landscaping improvements, new signage and more. During Modernism Week events in 2016-2017 more than $317,000 was generated from tours of neighborhood organizations. Local non-profit and civic organizations, that benefitted include: the Office of Emergency Management of the Palm Springs Fire Department (funds will be used to purchase emergency supplies for the disaster container), Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Palm Springs Modern Committee Education fund, Palm Springs Police Department (fund will be used to purchase five tactical vests), Safe Schools of the Desert, Well in the Desert, and several other organizations. “We are elated that Modernism Week can offer an opportunity for neighborhood organizations to raise funds that they use for civic improvements or reinvest back into the local community,” said J. Chris Mobley, Modernism Week Board Chairman. “As Modernism Week continues to grow, the valley’s tourism and international stature also grows. Tours and other events produced by partner organizations not only provide them with the ability to quickly raise funds, but also allows them to showcase their neighborhood to international tourists. In addition to working with neighborhoods, Modernism Week, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization also helps various local organizations raise funds to further support their efforts to preserve and promote modernist architecture throughout the community. Ticket proceeds for official Modernism Week events these organizations produced in 2016-2017 generated funds in excess of $470,000. The participating organizations included Friends of the Palm Springs Library, Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Center, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, Palm Springs Modern Committee, Palm Springs Historical Society, Seathletes, The Aluminaire Foundation, Volunteer Palm Springs, and Mizell Senior Center.

Modernism Week also awarded two new scholarships for aspiring architectural students. Modernism Week provides annual renewable 4-year scholarships to local Coachella Valley students who have chosen educational paths in the fields of architecture and design. Two scholarships, totaling $10,000, were awarded to deserving students in 2017, which includes matching funds from One Future Coachella Valley. Since the Modernism Week renewable 4-year scholarship program was initiated in 2011, a total of $39,000 has been awarded.

“Giving back to the community is one of the most important aspects of Modernism Week,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, Executive Director. “Our Board of Directors is committed to partnering with community organizations to provide the opportunities to generate revenue through event ticket sales, and we are especially pleased to award two scholarships to deserving students. These are just a few of the many ways that Modernism Week contributes to the local community.”

Modernism Week celebrates midcentury modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture in the greater Palm Springs area with two valley-wide events each year; one in October and one in February. The February 2017 event had 97,000 attendees, and generated an estimated $35.5 million in revenue for area hotels, shops, restaurants, and other local businesses from Palm Springs to Indian Wells and beyond. decorative and fine arts representing all design movements of the 20th century from more than 85 premier national and international dealers. “The 2017 Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale was by far the most well-attended of the Palm Springs shows in our company’s history,” said Rosemary Krieger, President of Dolphin Promotions. “Our exhibitors reported increased sales and their enthusiasm for the increased traffic was amazing.” Modernism Week celebrates and fosters appreciation of midcentury architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation and sustainable modern living as represented in Palm Springs and the surrounding Coachella Valley. Highlighting this dedication to education, this year more than thirty lectures and films spotlighting famed architects, landscape designers, historians, design experts and authors were presented to attendees. Additional Modernism Week educational programs included several West Coast film premiers, and panels about architectural preservation and renovation. Educational outreach has always been a core element of Modernism Week programming, and trend continued this year with a special series of talks and films on the topic of Mexico City Modern. A series of four presentations was conducted by leading luminaries on the subject, and a Modernism Week-produced trip to Mexico City will be held later this spring. Modernism Week’s central headquarters, CAMP (‘Community and Meeting Place’) was staged in a dynamic tented structure located in Downtown Palm Springs. Ferguson, Modernism Week’s exclusive Kitchen, Bath and Lighting sponsor, presented entertaining culinary demonstrations in their state-of-the-art kitchen, and featured Thermador appliances and innovative faucets from DXV. The expansive CAMP space also featured a café and bar by Cheeky’s-to-go, a merchandise area managed by Destination PSP, an information kiosk, and a large theater that featured more than 40 stimulating programs, panels and demonstration. This included the new, one-day Learning Lab seminar, targeted for architectural and design professionals, sponsored by Corian solid surfaces and Zodiaq quartz. It was also the ticket hub for the daily Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours, and new for 2017, group rides on the all-new Sunny Cycle electric bike experience with special tours developed specifically for Modernism Week exploring architectural neighborhoods in downtown. It was also the departure location for test rides of Alfa Romeo vehicles, one of the event’s premier sponsors. “This year attendees returned daily to CAMP to attend talks and cooking demonstrations, depart on tours, shop, and dine. The comments we received during the event reinforced that CAMP continues to be an important part of Modernism Week’s success,” said Mobley. Other exciting educational and enlightening programs included presentations celebrating the photography of Slim Aarons and his work in Palm Springs, a presentation and new documentary film on the history of neon signs, presentations and visual displays examining the architecture of the Desert Modernists, and tours and talks about modern gardens and outdoor living. Other Modernism Week 2017 festivities included the sold-out the annual Modernism Week Opening Night Party on Thursday, February 16, presented by Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery. The highlight of the night was a rousing performance by a singing group called the Dreamboats, which was graciously underwritten by Corian. The chic red carpet Opening Night Party incorporated a 60s-era spy movie-theme that paid homage to the James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever” which featured a famous scene filmed at the Elrod House in Palm Springs, designed by John Lautner. During Modernism Week, Lautner received a special star dedication on the Palm Springs

Walk of Stars honoring his designs and contributions to the history of midcentury modern architecture. Modernism Week once again offered attendees the opportunity to participate in home tours and architectural excursions outside of the immediate Palm Springs area including Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and Indian Wells, as well as the high desert. Tours outside the Valley included trips to Alta Loma for a tour of master woodworker Sam Maloof’s residence and studio, to Claremont for a Claremont Modernism Tour, and to Banning for a fun filled night at the Museum of Pinball. The Modernism Week Show House: The Christopher Kennedy Compound, sponsored by Traditional Home and California Home + Design magazines, showcased the newly renovated Villa Golightly, the home of social media sensation Kelly Lee (aka ‘Kelly Golightly’) and her husband, Fred Moser. Organizer Christopher Kennedy brought together twenty of the nation’s most prominent tastemakers to create uniquely designed rooms in this decorator showcase. It featured a Red Carpet Gala, starlight after party, daily tours and many other exciting evening events. Later this year, Modernism Week will offer its annual Fall Preview from October 20-22, 2017 (tickets on sale August 1 at 12 p.m. PST) and will stage the 2018 Modernism Week event from February 15-25, 2018 (tickets on sale November 1 at 12 p.m. PST).
