E Major – most economical (no shifts), no open strings

-----------4-6-7-7-6-4----------------4-5-7-------------7-5-4------4-6-------------------------6-4---------------------------------- 1 3 1 2 4 1 3 4 4 3 1 4 2 1 3 1

E Major – all on one string, both fingering options good

--------------------------------------O-2-4-5-7-9-11-12-12-11-9-7-5-4-2-0--------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 1 3-1 3-1 3 4 4 3 1-3 1-3 1 0 << better? 0 1 3 4-1 3-1 2 2 1--3 1-4 3 1 0 why?

BASIC POSITION BLOCKING “block” your fingers so that each maps with a

consecutive fret, only one fret apart. Or, If useful for a particular passage, extend the first finger

back 1 additional fret so there is one “empty” fret space (1 whole tone) EITHER between fingers 1+2 OR 3+4 (these are called “extensions”).FYI: the pitch interval between any 2 adjacent frets is 1 semi-tone. 1 whole tone = 2 semi-tones. Word.

2nd finger functions as an anchor in any block Because it is strong Because it doesn’t extend the way 1 and 4 can because it is more naturally independent than 3 Because it functions as a natural fulcrum

Fingering: Best Practices (they’re options, not rules)

SHIFTS Don't shift upward or downward to the same finger unless for

color (a slide) Which arrival finger to choose depends on what happens next in

the musical line immediately following the shift:- if the line falls after the shift, arrive on a

higher finger number- if the line is upward after the shift,

arrive on a lower finger Practice shifts so that they occur without being heard. They

should flow seamlessly in tempo with no audible slide. Once you can perform them fluidly, begin to practice them so you CAN hear the slide. Ultimately, you should be able to control the degree of audible slide that makes sense to your performance.

Fingering: Best Practices (they’re options, not rules)

Shift technique in slow motion:1. Slide your finger of departure to where it would

fallnaturally in the new block

2. Place your arrival finger after the shift3. If you wish to incorporate an degree of audible

slide should come from the originating finger, not the arrival finger

Page 8: CALENDAR | INFO | WORKSHOP CHARTS torontoUKES.com/ukenite eMail: ukenite@yahoo.com

TECHNIQUE IS 100% SUBORDINATE TO MAKING MUSIC

While economy of movement is really important, your performance is all that ultimately matters. The moment determines the path you take.

Avoid open strings! They have a unique tonal character that should be used for colour, not ease.

Ultimate finesse: each string’s character is unique. SOMETIMES moving upward on a string (vs switching strings for minimal movement) makes better MUSICAL sense for the sake of consistent color within a phrase

“play the music, not the instrument” “follow the musical course and the notes will take care of

themselves” But be informed. Practice best practices and choose your paths

purposefully. Get your options down.

First learn the rules, THEN learn how to break them intelligently.

Fingering: Best Practices (they’re options, not rules)
