December is overshadowed by the holidays- but the real joy is in the days of anticipation before. I love the look on a customer’s face when they come to the counter holding a treasure gently like some rare bird. They place it, with a canary-cat smile and declare this is perfect for that person. As tissue enfolds the gift and I slip it in a bag, even I can share the delightful satisfaction they feel. Giving is whipped cream- a lift to the heart; a smack of sunlight, especially if a shared history informs your choice of gift. The best gifts are those that show the depth of your understanding and love of another. They usually are not the expensive, flashy stash, but a smaller, lovingly wrapped bit, given shyly or with devilish fanfare- the reaction an anticipated gift-back. Giving gifts nurtures us- there are actual studies verifying better health, and increased happiness in those that give freely of their time, energy and (what is affordable to them.) Material stuff is just that, the golden gifts are those that reflect a glint of the giver’s time, if not in labor- then thought.Filling the Random Good’s section is always compelling- there are often stories behind the short answers folks are so generous to give me. These are gifts of shared joy, irony and sometimes tears. Our stories connect us. The hol-idays encourage full households and family anecdotes, mornings of touseled hair and pajamas, leisurely coffee with cookies (or pie!) for breakfast and brisk afternoon walks to work off the 3rd helping of mashed potatoes. So once again, it is time that is the very best gift. Time for the holidays and time for you and yours- best wishes for a very happy holiday season... Dana Simson

I t t a k e s a C o m m u n i t y ! Snow Hill, along the scenic Pocomoke River, is a giving community, with several
programs in place to quietly lend assistance when needed. A shining star among these is The Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Christmas Needy Program, now in its 29th
year. Coordinator Dena Holloway shares that the program was formed to help families in Worcester County who otherwise couldn’t have a Christmas by providing food, toys, clothing and other essentials as needed. Donations of new toys, non-perishable food and
money are welcomed. Make checks out to WCSO Christmas Program and send to 1 West Market Street Room 1001, Snow Hill, MD 21863.

traingardensWhen I was a kid, our basement was the best part of our house. Dad had built us a ping-pong table that opened to reveal a train wonderland. He had wrestled chickenwire and paper mache into roll-ing hills intersected by tunnels and twig lined streets where matchbox cars purred along on finger power. The launch of this captivating family focus culminated with the sale of Dad’s coveted big metal trainset from his childhood. The heavy engine was almost 10 inches long and chugged with a deeply stoic power. But Dad knew it’s sale would fund a return of several entire HO scale trains, miles of track, a small village of buildings, road signs and tiny plastic people. Holidays and birthdays guaranteed an additional coal car, circle of track or lilliputian gas station. Building a tiny king-dom where contentment rides in watching a merry little engine merely going forward is a real holiday!Visit one of the many train gardens scattered across Delmarva for a sweet little journey.

The holiday season, which begins for most Americans with Thanksgiving and continues through New Year’s Day, often brings unwelcome guests — stress and depression. And it’s no wonder. In an effort to pull off a perfect holiday, you might find yourself facing a dizzying array of demands — parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, to name a few. So much for peace and joy, right?
# Be realistic. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones. For example, if your adult children can’t come to your house, find new ways to celebrate together, such as sharing pictures, emails, dvd movies or skype. Do something new and special! Don’t Mope.
# Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don’t live up to all your expectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discus-sion. Be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they’re feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression too.
# Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget.
# Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Leave in some swing-time or quiet time. Don’t overdo.
# Don’t abandon healthy habits. Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don’t go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks. Continue to get plenty of sleep and physical activity.
# Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without dis-tractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Take a walk at night and stargaze. Listen to soothing music. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. Slow down.....live in the “present”.

Making a wreath is fun anytime, but in the season of red berries and curiously beautiful dried weeds it is a great excuse to dive into the nearest field and come out with an armful. I made a rosemary wreath merely because my plant needed a good cropping- but don’t limit yourselves! My dear friend Bobby Stadler and I use our wreath day as a great excuse to leap off our respective treadmills and steal a brisk afternoon to deposit delicate pine branches, holly, blueberried cypress, sage and rosemary on to the wooden patio table and set to work. She wins in the bringing the most fabulous cuttings to the “table department! 1) Locate some wild grapevine. Easy to find, ever obtrusive grapevine has a severe Napoleon Complex, so inwrenching it from the tree it is strangling you conduct a win/win. You save a tree! You get the base for your wreath. The best vines for wreaths are live, flexible strands about 1/8-1/4 in diameter. You should have a nice 15-20 foot length, after picking yourself up from the ground after pulling with all your might, when the vine snaps free. Yank 2 of these loose and bend them round to form a 20 inch wide circle. Intertwine the loose ends and lock them in place by weaving them back into the tangle. Once you have your circle secured, begin inserting cuttings of whatever plant you’ve pillaged-(mixing up a few varieties makes a lovely wreath) In these pictures I am using just rosemary, as I love it’s fragrance. As I wove the cuttings into the ring of vines, going round in the same direction so stem covers stem, I began to dream of how fabulous the wreath would look upon my door. But no! even better, I am going off to see my friend Katy in Pennsylvania- and what better gift than a rosemary wreath. This really got me working and I must say the rosemary bush got a nice trim. Simply continue inserting short branches until your wreath looks full and balanced. Feel free to wrestle the unruly parts of your wreath into submission. You are the boss, and a little prun-ing is not a crime. Once your wreath is fat and you are happy- by all means apply a bow, pinecones or even seashells. Add a bit of wire- or a hanger to secure it to the door.- I must warn you- making wreaths is addictive. You may wish to figure out how to make live pine swags to adorn your front porch.... no worries- I’ll tell you how. Go on the Garden Warrier blog- they are but a bit of wire and ingenuity. SUGAR COOKIES* 1 cup (2 sticks) butter * 1/2 cup sugar * 1 large egg * 1 tablespoon vanilla extract * 3 cups all-purpose flour
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In large bowl, with mixer on low speed, beat butter and sugar until blended. Increase speed to high; beat until light and creamy. On low speed, beat in egg and vanilla. Beat in flour, baking powder, and salt until blended. 2. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces; flatten each piece into a disk. Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 hour or until dough is firm enough to roll. (Or place dough in freezer 30 minutes.) 3. On lightly floured surface, with floured rolling pin, roll 1 piece of dough 1/8 inch thick. With floured 3-inch to 4-inch cookie cutters, cut dough into as many cookies as possible; wrap and refrigerate trimmings. Place cookies, 1 inch apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet. 4. Bake cookies 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool. 5. When cookies are cool, frost with cookie frosting/ royal frosting or decorate with sugars and candies.. Set cookies aside to allow frosting to dry completely, about 1 hour. Store in tightly covered container (with waxed paper between layers if decorated) at room temperature up to 2 weeks, or in freezer up to 3 months. Nice activity to do with friends or family.

As with any organization, our numbers flucuate with the times. Currently our roster lists 26 names which in addition to the active members, includes honorary members, duel chapter members and associ-ate members. There are two other Sweet Adeline cho-ruses on Delmarva. In Milford, Delaware there are The First State Harmonettes, (firststateharmonettes.com) in Berlin, The Delmarva Chorus. (delmarvachorus.com) For the men there are the tried and true Peninsulaires who have been ringing chords for almost 50 years. The Director or the music committee select the songs and arrange them in ‘Bar-bershop style.’ The 4-part harmony chord is the melody or lead surrounded by three other parts: Tenor, very high notes, Bass, very low notes and Baritone, whose notes can either be above or below the lead, but are important in making that unique barbershop sound. 52
Anyone familiar with The Music Man will remember the quartet, “The Buffalo Bills” as the school boardsinging “Lida Rose.” That’s barbershop Harmony!Every Spring, usually in April all the choruses and registered quartets in our region compete in Ocean City. The winners then go on to the International competition which this year was held in Seattle. We are very proud of a special quartet this year, MAXX FACTOR who came in #1 Internationally! Earlier this year they made it through a grueling 3 days on national TV appearing on “The All American Sing-Out.” And in 2008 sang on our “Fifth Annual Christmas Festival of Harmony” show. The best thing about being a Sweet Adeline are the rewards of individual achievement, performing and a sense of belonging. Harmony creates an atmosphere of camaraderie among its mem-bership, and provide an opportunity for individual growth.That’s why I have been a member for more than 30 years. In fact, we just recieved a certificate honoring us for our 25 Anniversary as a chartered Chapter of Sweet Adelines International. Our next performance December 4th “Seventh Annual Christmas Festival of Harmony” Delmar High School, Delmar DE. Adults & Seniors $10, Students $5. “Education has always been our focus. Tasha is a graduate of Indian River High School and I graduated from Milford High School. After we both earned Associate Degrees from Delaware Tech, we continued our studies at Wilmington University; earning Bachelor degrees. My focus was Behavioral Science and Tasha’s degree was in Business Administration. By this time we fully understood the benefits and value of academic excellence. Over the next several years we added Master’s degrees in Educational Counseling and I completed a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. Tasha maintains a private practice in the state of Delaware. Currently, we have have returned to Wilmington University as adjunct professors. While we wear many hats, a common theme of helping people remains our focus. As Clinical Administrators in the field of mental health, Tasha is a Clinical Coordinator for Delaware Guidance Services and I am the Clinical Director for Children and Families First. We became concerned about the lack of parental involvement in the school system and formed SPEAAK (Supporting Parents for the Education of African American Kids). SPEAAK, a parent-based group in Sussex County, encourages more parental involvement in area schools, resulting in higher grades, decrease in negative school/community behavior and a positive attitude toward education.”

What are you involved with at present?“Leadership, teaching, mentoring and writing all for the sake of supporting those in physical, emotional, or educational need. Tasha has fallen in love with working with African American females, introducing a Dance group named UNIQUE, to teach young girls social skills through the art of dance. I advocate for African American males, forwarding the real potential of these great young men, through love, support and encouragement. I founded and continue to direct a Leadership Program (MAN UP) involving a great ensemble of talented and passionate adults who provide top-level leadership for teenage boys. When we see these young men take the SAT for the first time and do well, improve their grades, and utilize their God-given talents on the sports field/court-it makes us so proud and teary-eyed. We are thankful to these students and their parents for allowing us to be part of their lives for so long.” MAN UP’s/UNIQUE’s first senior class, all graduated and currently attend college!”what lead you both to focus on family issues? “It became very clear to us some time ago when we noticed our house was the hang out spot for many youth and we felt like an extension to their parents. Simply stated, we just love being there and advocating for children/families and teaching others the vitality of supporting children/fami-lies at every level-youth, adults, professionals, administrators, policy makers.”What are your proudest accomplishments?1- Finding each other in matrimony 2- Being role models/leadership positions for so many, especially our own children: Julius Sr. (19), Juwan. (17), Jazmine (15), Jayla (10) Future Goals?“Tasha wants to start a counseling center for professional and families, called MILESTONES. She hopes to utilize her expertise to continue to help families and provide a vehicle for aspiring counselors to learn and develop their skills. In my new role as clinical director for Children and Families First, I’d like to grow clinical programming for the agency. I am very motivated to complete my book-MAN UP. We look forward to watching our children grow up into positive and productive citizens.
